"The giant tree spirit takes care of us."

Gren's mom looks confused.

"Oh! That's the Deku Tree! I've heard of him. It's probably okay mom."

"Hmm. Alright. Nice to meet you two, I'm Rilah. Grendal's mother as you may have guessed."

"Pleased to meet you." She shakes her hand.

"I see you three have some fish. Would you like me to cook up a nice fancy meal for you all?"

"Definitely."

"I'll help too." She whispers at Zeke, "Because I'll have to do harder chores otherwise, haha."

He giggles. 

Much to their surprise, cooked food now tastes better than raw stuff. Who would've guessed?

Rilah sings softly while she cooks and eats. By all measures she just seems happy to see Gren with new friends.

(Gren's dad is nowhere to be seen, and not mentioned.)

The twins don't find this unusual. Although they can probably guess Rillah didn't eat Gren's father.

After dinner and some nominal chores that the twins are invited to skip, "Do you guys want to play a few more games before night time?"

"Sure!"

So they play. That grumpy teenager joins for a couple rounds of Build Race after bringing over a bundle of firewood wrapped in twine in exchange for a big box of smoked fish.

And then Rilah sends Gren to bed and sings a lullaby. She offers the same for the twins, and a spot in two makeshift hammocks.

They gladly accept.

Lullaby it is then.

Gren wakes up at dawn.

The twins are waiting quite impatiently for her to wake up.

"Hi guys. Did you sleep okay? I've got chores and stuff, I can come find you this afternoon."

"We could help."

"If you want to I'd appreciate it!"

"Gren, don't make your new friends do all your work, yes?"

"They volunteered, mom! And there's nobody else to play with so early in the morning."

Honestly, most of this stuff feels like a game to the twins.

They fetch water and wash things and tidy up and work on a new fish-house. Then it's time for breakfast cooked by Rilah.

"You know," Rilah says, "You two arrived near a special day for little Grendal! She's turning eleven today. The same age as the hero of legend. It's traditional to dress up in special clothes and have a big party to celebrate today, sort of a coming of age."

"Ooh, could we come?"

"Sure! Yes definitely!"

"Well, if Gren wants you there, certainly. It's not until later though."

"Sounds like fun."

"For now though we can go play some more. Do you want to go see the Fairy Forest?"

"Is that anything like Deku's island?"
