Thomas raises the pen where they isolated the tiny creature. Gabe gave it a sparkly, but tasteful collar - putting it on was the hard part. "He did, killed his family while heroically saving us."

    "How sure are you it won't seek revenge once it is grown?"

    "Well, okay, if you say so. It is adorable."

"Admittedly, I don't know the species here, but it looks like the kind of animal that might eat you no matter how properly you raise them."

"Yeah, but as Sendhei put it. The murder kitty is adorable. And when it becomes a large murder kitty it will be cool if Taharqi can bring it to battle. It fits the aesthetic."

Henry gives him a no-nonsense look. "Well, there is probably a way to reduce its risk." Pause. "Sorry if I was being too critical. Mes have a sort of keep-things-safe role on the island and having more of me around made it stronger."

    "He already has a pair of greater snow wolves, a crocodile, and a shaleback," Sendhei comments. "Plus the two horses."

"But I mean, again, if it kills me, I can just come back. Oh! Speaking of which! I found something out. When I died I had the distinct impression that I could choose to come back to life here rather than back home."

"Huh, cool? Morbid, but cool. What is a shaleback?"

"It's... a reptile? About as tall as me when it's crouching down, four legs, big shell? Also be right back, I will go die and check if I can reform here."

And without waiting he gets up to start walking out of the tent for a swift death.

Henry stops him.

"I made you some poison for you to kill yourself, assuming you know poisons to be safe."

He hands over a metallic flask with a skull engraved.

"—that sounds like a bad idea. My body would remain here."

"We could just push it to the ground, your other body is still down there."

"The panthers haven't eaten it yet?" He accepts the flask with the poison and looks at it.

Henry hands it.

"You barely gave the poor things time."

So he drinks it.

It takes a few seconds, but then it's like his chest feels progressively heavier. A minute later, it's like there is a boulder on his lungs. It doesn't exactly hurt, he is feeling numb too, and his legs give out. Henry helps him keep standing. Sight dims, going completely black after a minute, then he slips into coldness.

Overall, it might depend on if one prefers to quick and sharp, over slow and fading.

And he's dead.

    "That was really creepy," Sendhei opines.

"Yeah, for once Henry being scarier didn't make him hotter."

"Sorry, but we didn't have anything that acted as a poison. Or at least nothing that was painless."

Henry pushes the body over the rail.

After a few more seconds there's a floating green ball of light, the size of a marble, and then it grows and becomes an oval gem. The bracelet reforms first, attached to the floating gem. Then the arm grows from it, in a kind of creepy way where the bones start reforming before the sinew and nerves and muscles and skin, and his body is whole, lying on the wooden floor, after only another ten seconds.

And then he opens his eyes. "One, the faster method is better. Two, I think... there is some... recharge mechanism. To this."

    "Recharge?"

"Yeah, er. I don't know exactly how it works but it definitely felt like I was consuming something, some resource, just now."

"Like, if you die too many times too close it will be permanent death? Or we will have to wait more time before that anatomy lesson we just got?"

"Sorry if my poison wasn't pleasant," Henry says oddly uncomfortably.
