and both peoples prospered
Conan Exiles James really appeals to some silvers.

They were not there to do anything fancy. Just install some cameras around the rebirth chamber, it's sheer luck his Gabe is there. It wasn't even necessary since someone was already assigned to help him.

Only his Gabe was paying attention to what the other two Henries and the other two people were doing. Which let him raise a shield in time.

Then there was a thunderous crack, as the duplicating crystal cracks beneath and there's a spark of something more than electricity. The world glows blue and purple.

Permalink Mark Unread

His shield is not very good, but raises really fast, so it lets the impact against the ground be a bit cushioned. And maybe it means that the chunk of crystal doesn't crush anyone's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still, ouch. Thomas pushes the crystal chunk away from his head, and looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's dusk, wherever this is. It's also wet; they're outside, and the ground is grass, and the surroundings are trees, and it's raining. The damp earth underneath them is the kind of texture that tells of a place that sees rain often and for long times, and the presence of clouds in all directions promises it won't abate for a while still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Joy. Thomas stands up, then he uses the rain to wash his hands because he used them to stand up from a damp ground. He offers the washed hands to help the other two stand. "Do you guys have any idea of what happened? And where we are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They both accept a hand. Once he is standing, Henry pulls his shirt up to protect his face from the rain. "Not a clue," he says after taking in the surroundings. "I don't think they were doing anything with teleportation." He looks inquiringly at his Gabe, before crouching down and examining the crystal chunk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"From what I heard, it was yet another attempt to stop the cloning? A Henry had just stepped away from the crystal? Didn't look like he was running from an explosion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then... we should focus on finding shelter from the rain. And keep the crystal safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And ourselves safe. Crystal grow some weapons first. Give everyone a Gabe shield."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Gabe, grow your power crystals while I figure out how to strap the cloning crystal to your back. Thomas, make the weapons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

They go about doing that. Thomas goes to search for existing branches that look sturdy enough. The basis for a crude spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's the woods and it's raining. More than enough branches to go around.

There's a flash of lightning in the distance, a moment of light to illuminate their surroundings and more clearly reveal the details of the environment. The jungle also extends a ways into the distance, but it's not so thick as to obscure what seem to be ruins of black stone to the north. There are grassy boulders and short cliffs peppering the landscape, some even shaped as to offer some shelter from the rain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, guys. Isn't your world supposed to not have any other people in it?" He points in the direction of the ruins. "That looked like old crumbled buildings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That can't be. Or... let's get out of the rain first." He has finished improvising strapping the chunk.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's like a backpack filled with rocks, but without the backpack. Gabe raises one of his shield crystals above himself (and above the others). It starts diverting the rain. It still hits them, but not as much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Towards shelter? Towards shelter. One of the cliffs or boulders should do for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shelter it is! They can easily find some combination of rock and earth that suitably shelters them from the worst of the rainfall. It's not very windy, which is a blessing, but the air is hot and sticky and damp and their shoes are absolutely getting soaked and filled with wet dirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh. This is terrible. He sets the crystal down on the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be careful to only put down what you can pick up in a hurry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think we might be attacked?" Henry asks taking off his shoes and trying to get the mud out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we are not even in the same world. So I will be careful. Do you think either of you could make raincoats?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I can do that. But are we going to stay exactly here? You might want a tent or an umbrella first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A tent sounds better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think this is the best place to stay overnight. I want to look around for a better spot first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't do that in the dark," he points in the general direction of the dusky sky.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guys you are both pretty. And also my best friends in this whole world. Don't fight. It will make future threesomes awkward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair point."

Permalink Mark Unread

He supposes he at least knows how to deal with someone that is horny. "Make some capes we can then turn into tents," he says to Gabe. "I will make us some lanterns and maybe a fire. Or start with the fire and then the lanterns."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I will make us more pointy sticks." He offers the pointy stick to Henry.

They go about doing those tasks. Henry can't start the fire without wood, so he goes about making the lanterns first anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe making the lanterns and/or fire was not such a good idea, as a couple of minutes after they start emitting light they hear what sounds unmistakeably like growling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas makes sure he has the shield crystal safely secured for use and raises his pointy stick to intercept anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry shines the light towards the soure of the sound. He makes crystal spikes grow out of his forearms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dusk plus heavy rain means it's pretty damn dark, almost night dark. So the feline creatures they are shining their lights on might not actually be black panthers.

They sure do look like black panthers, though. Four of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make yourselves look bigger..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are too many of them. Aim for their faces."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...And louder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fight the danger first. Then each other." He has stopped creating the plastic fabric, and is now using what he has as a flag thing to look bigger. Also, he growls at the panthers.

Permalink Mark Unread

They seem to be trying to scout the three for threats first, and Gabe's flag trick does seem to spook them a bit, but these panthers seem rather more aggressive than one might expect and one of them decides to lunge for him rather than cowering.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gah! Panther can get a facefull of the thing happens to be holding: the rainproof sheet. Which, Gabe has the presence of mind to put between himself and the creature's mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No!" Henry tries to get the creature away from Gabe with a kick.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Thomas will have to watch out for further attacks, because these two clearly don't know what they are doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another panther, encouraged by the first panther's not being immediately killed, decides to go after Thomas who seems smaller and more importantly alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are you ever truly alone when you have a pointy stick in your hand? Likely, but Thomas has a pointy stick and a magic shield that he can raise right before the creature connects. Then his pointy stick can make a deep connection with the overgrown black cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is also reminded that he has magic. And tries to push the panther off himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Second panther is appropriately surprised by shield and sticky and gets very stabbed! It does not immediately die but it does become immediately useless.

First panther growls but is successfully pushed off. Second panther's death sets the other two panthers off, who decide to Avenge Their Comrade. Or maybe they're just dumb animals who don't know how to run from danger. Or maybe they're just very very hungry. Who knows. What they do know is that they are now being attacked by two extra panthers, and the first panther tries to go for Henry while the third and fourth ones both try to go for Gabe while trying to keep away from Thomas, who has proven to be the bigger threat so far.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry is more agile than Gabe, but in an ill-advised maneuver decides to put the spikes in his forearms to good use by swinging them at the panther's arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

With his foot, Thomas kicks mud against the other panthers, aware that they will aim for vulnerable targets. "Get up."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a good idea. Gabe throws some mud and dirt in the beasts' direction while retreating to get to a standing position.

Permalink Mark Unread

These beasts are now aware that sharp things are a possibility and so are prepared for Henry's sharpness. The panther jumps out of the way and lands paw-first on Henry's thighs before attempting to bite some un-spiked part of Henry, plausibly his shoulder.

The panthers seem only barely inconvenienced by the dirtā€”which makes sense, they live in a jungle where it rains a lot, it would be pretty maladaptive if they had trouble with soft material being flung in their directionā€”but the inconvenience is sufficient to permit Gabe the time to stand up. And then be lunged at by a panther.

(The one Thomas stabbed whines one last time before dying.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets the panther lunge at him, so he can raise the shield and make the thing slide off and above him. Maybe it can hit the rock they have been leaning against.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ouch. How does the panther feel about more spikes growing out of Henry's body? It hurts. But so do animal bites.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas will just make sure the third panther doesn't lunge at any of them while the other two are distracted.

Permalink Mark Unread

The panther that bit Henry's shoulder whines and pulls away as soon as it feels the tips of the spikes, which prevents it from being Stabbed To Death In The Brain but it does get some bleeding.

Third panther is trying to find an opening to get at Thomas. It does not seem suitably impressed by and/or afraid of the spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Silly panther. Maybe silly enough to fall for a faint attack. Thomas pretends to go one way, goes to another. Attacks the open flank.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe grabs the spear that Henry has failed to use and swings it in a long arc against the Panther that just bit Henry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Both of these panthers are either smarter than your average panther or used to humans. They fall for neither trick, and attempt a counterattack, while the third one tries to join the fray against Thomas specifically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly to let out his frustration, Thomas growls loudly as he deflects the attack without being separated from the other two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry throws the spikes on one arm, while Gabe defends by letting a panther bite into the makeshift spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Growl growl makeshift spear is destroyed, and now that panther goes for Gabe. The three of them are surrounded, and even though one of the panthers is still bleeding from the mouth they are still trying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those are some really stupid or really hungry apex predators. Or both. He pulls Gabe out of the way and raises a shield.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas will do his best to get these things out of the gene pool. He aims to stab the lunging one, but instead it hits Henry's shield.

Permalink Mark Unread

And that is when a man, wearing nothing but a pair of bone earrings and a bracelet with a glowing gem, holding what seem to be a torch and a steel axe, lands by the panther from who knows where, severing its head cleanly from its shoulders. The other two panthers leap away and growl at this newcomer, but he turns right towards them and growls back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow. "Don't get distracted," Henry says to Gabe before even realizing he should follow that advice himself. He picks up the pieces of the broken spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You ask so much from me," Gabe mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is entirely happy with this turn of events.

Permalink Mark Unread

The naked man does not wait for the panthers to make the first move, and he jumps towards them with the axe swinging. They dodge, but they're not fast enough to dodge his followup arcing swing and swirl, which catches one of the panthers' foreleg and the other's haunch. They get the hint that maybe this is the time to flee, but he cleaves through them as if they're made of butter, and in only a few more seconds it's over, their carcasses surrounding him and the only sign of any exhaustion on his part being some panting. He hauls the axe up so it's resting on his right shoulder and turns around to look at them. "Are all of you alive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

After a pause where the three of them stare at the man's dick, Thomas looks up and speaks. "We are, mostly thanks to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's only the three of us. And we are not fatally injured," says the one with several onyx spikes poking out of his skin, a few of them even bleeding. After raising his eyes he is making a point of keeping them raised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe does not break eye-to-dick contact. "Thanks for saving us, how can I repay you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"By staying alive." He does not ask what in the Great Serpent's name they are wearing. Instead, he jerks his head towards the north and says, "Come with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do," Thomas says. he is back IN survival mode, but that won't stop him from appreciating the view. "Show the way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe picks up the crystal chunk after Henry prompts him to.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he starts leading them north, towards the ruins they saw.

It's rather dark by now, and hard to see, but there's lightning and thunder which seems to startle some small thing nearby, based on the little squeal they can hear. The man notices and turns to look for the source, and finds... a panther kitten, small and afraid and curled up on itself. His expression immediately softens. "Hey, little guy, it's okay. Was that your family?" The panther does a tiny squealing growl in response. "Shhh, I'm sorry, I wish I hadn't needed to kill them, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww, adorable murder-kitten. "Sorry that me and my friends are so appetizing to your relatives," Thomas says to the tiny creature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry, by constrast, is giving the thing a rather sour look. He has retrieved a lantern and shines it in the creature's direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man moves his axe from his right hand to under his left arm and scoops up the kitten with his now-free hand. It tries to resist, but it does seem to be rather starving, and can't fight him off. "Shhh, little guy," he repeats. "I'll get some food into you." He straightens up and jerks his head to the north again then keeps going.

From this direction, they can see more firelight, seemingly coming from atop one of the ruins.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a pause:

"Thank you for rescuing us. Where are we and where are you taking us?"

He waves for Gabe to not say anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ruins of the ancient Lemurian settlement," he replies. "I believe this specific location is Dagon's Eye. I am setting up a base there, although it is still unfortunately under construction." The kitten mewls softly in his hand.

An appropriately-timed bolt of lightning in the distance illuminates the skeleton of the structure he seems to be building: there is a squareish balcony made of wood held up on top of a tall stone structure by said structure itself plus some wooden pillars firmly attached to the ground. The beginnings of a wooden bridge leading from that square towards the rest of the ruins seem to be under construction, but that is all. There is a large and thick tent over the structure made of animal hide, seemingly treated to be impervious to water, and the structure itself is dry enough to attest to its quality.

There is a rope ladder leading up to it, its bottom high enough that one might need to jump to reach it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nifty place, did you build it yourself?" Thomas asks. Up? It sounds like they will need to jump and go up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did, yes. Would one of you be so kind as to hold these for me?" he asks, offering them the axe and the torch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry takes the axe, since he already has a light source.

Also, his spikes have mostly vanished.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas takes the torch and waits until he can climb the rope.

Permalink Mark Unread

So the man starts climbing, one-handed, with the kitten in hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a very agile man.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't forget to shield your fall or you will break your neck," Henry tells Gabe.

Permalink Mark Unread

When the man arrives up top, he gently deposits the kitten on a bundle of furs then goes back to look down. "Do any of you need help up?" he calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

They look at each other. "No, do you think your rope can take more than one at same time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry covers Gabe's mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can take all of you," he replies with confidence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe just smirks and they quickly climb up. Well, limited by their injuries but no one falls.

Permalink Mark Unread

The area is large enough for them all to be comfortable, but only just. There are furs on the dry treated wood that one could not-terribly-uncomfortably sleep on, as well as a taller, bigger pile of furs and hides over in a corner that looks like it might be clothes of some sort. A large part of the area is occupied by a campfire, with an iron pot hanging over still-burning embers, smelling of recently-cooked meat. A wooden box lies in another corner, filled with what seem to be tools and bunches of wood and iron.

The man is feeding the kitten tiny scraps of roasted meat when they arrive, and it's making tiny contented sounds.

Permalink Mark Unread

So adorable and so bad ass. "May I come close? I am freezing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. The furs and the tent will keep you warm, as soon as you dry up, it's wet but actually really hot here if you're dry." When he sees Henry arrive, he takes the torch back to place it in a little metal nook he has prepared for this, away from the campfire, so there are two sources of light and warmth. When he does that, though, he notices Henry's injuries and frowns. "We will need to treat that or it'll get infected," he says, moving over to the pile of probably-clothes-question-mark? to try to look for something there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can use our magic to patch ourselves up. But that's very kind of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses and looks over his shoulder. "Are you sure? I have some aloe wraps here, it would be no trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our kind of magic is different from yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

He lowers his hands and shrugs. "As you wish, then." He holds out a hand in Gabe's direction for his axe and sits on the floor, cross-legged. "Well, make yourselves at home, such as it is. My name is Taharqi. It is a pleasure to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. This is Gabe, and Thomas. I am Henry. Thank you for saving us... if there is anything we can do to repay you."

His hand covers Gabe's mouth. While the other picks up the axe to hand it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

He accepts the offered axe and fetches a small cloth-like thing to clean it up. "While I am sure we can fuck later as your friend seems to so terribly want," he says, raising an eyebrow and tilting his head in Gabe's direction, "it would not be appropriate to ask for sex as payment for saving someone's life. Or anything, really. You are not in debt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my defense, it's not every day I'm saved by a naked warrior. But I will selflessly fuck you regardless of payment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me check your injuries," Henry says, taking Gabe's shirt off . "But still, you saved our lives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, we are like, from a different world so we might want to keep your help if possible," he says, removing his shirt to check for injuries on himself too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi looks a little bit bemused by Gabe's mentioning of him being naked as if that in itself meant... anything.

"'Different world'," he repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is what I said. Oh, wait. You weren't going to hide that from him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? No! I am just not used to explaining 'we are from another world' to people. It's not like I had the opportunity to specialize in that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might want to take a step back to explain what 'different world' means, exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is more than one world, and you can't travel between them the way you could travel by moving the normal way. And they can be quite different from each other, including having different kinds of people, magic or just ways they work. Does that help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this like the realm of the dead or the realms of the gods?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not familiar with either. But our world is not a place that you could walk, or fly, or swim to. No matter how fast or if you could move indefinitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... see. I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We were in a magical accident, which is what got us here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems unfortunate. Does your world not have... weapons, or animals? You seemed very unprepared, out there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, it does. But we weren't expecting a fight with wild animals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No offense, but you two also suck at fighting."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah you do, he doesn't say.

"Well, are you hungry?" he says instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We would love to eat. Thank you so much. We... our magic is capable of duplicating things if given enough time."

He has been inspecting Gabe's injuries this whole time, and Taharqi can now see a black crystal outgrowth from Henry's finger that covers Gabe's injuries.

Permalink Mark Unread

Weird sorcery. Cool-looking, though.

He gets to his knees to scoot over to the iron pot, and he grabs some clay bowls to distribute spiced meat with berries to everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas accepts the spiced meat with berries. "So, how about you? Do you often sexily rescue strangers from wild animals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sexily? I don't often rescue anyone because most people around here would just as soon kill and eat me but the three of you seemed more lost than most."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sexily. Because you are sexy. And physical prowess and unabashed nudity is hot. Also, yeah, we are definitely more lost than most people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This place has cannibals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nudity is hot...? That sounds like you would be turned on very often. And yes, the Darfari tribes like eating people to please their god."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, we are from cultures with different standards around nudity. Likely sex if your offer was at all common. Andā€¦ yikes, about the cannibals. Is their god real?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yog is real, yes, are most of your gods imaginary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes? Some worlds have real gods, but that has never stopped worlds from coming up with their own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why would you invent gods if they don't exist?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry gives him a helpless shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you guys really want to talk religion during dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Dinner'. You have meal times. That's interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh... that is surprising."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh... how are you understanding us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... thought it was some magic of yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas looks at Henry.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... have no clue. It's not like we have translation magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did not realise you were speaking a different language until just now, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh... If you can understand this, raise your left hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Left hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. So, I guess the power of translation was coming from you all along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh." He lowers his left hand, but looks at the bracelet with the green gem on it. "Then it's probably the bracelet. It's the only magical thing I have on my person right now, and they were made for communication."

Not that there was much else on him to serve as an alternative. The earrings, maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neat. Anyway, yeah, we are from wacky worlds where people make up gods, specific times for meals and clothing and sex nonsense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm from this world," he says, grinning. There's a mewling sound, and he goes to check on the kitten.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is the kitten doing? Do you know if it is already weaned off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He ate the meat just fine. He's asleep, now, I think that was him making noises in his dreams."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know if it's a safe pet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all, he might kill me when he grows up. But I killed his parents so I think it would be fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't argue with that logic. I could teach you my magic to protect yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or a muzzle, or both."

He has been eating his meat and checking himself for injuries, creating pale green patches on his skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now might be the part where I mention that when I die my body reforms back home so I am not that worried about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is good news. How does it work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really know. It certainly is the bracelet, as it teleports to me when I wake up, and I'm not sure how it decides where my home is, but yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, how do you get one? I am feeling all lonely being the only here that never comes back in one way or another."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Become a political enemy of your country's government and then get exiled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that sounds like a not-fun but interesting story."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They hand out immortality bracelets like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's unintended. These bracelets were originally designed by a race long extinct, of giant-kings, twice as tall as me, maybe more." Taharqi is tall, at least for an iron age human. "There was a war, and they took humans as slaves, and gave them these bracelets to ensure obedience." He looks out, now, at the distance, even though it's dark enough that there's not much to see but the dancing shadows of the ruins and trees closest around them. "And to ensure they would never flee. This whole area, which we call the Exiled Lands now, is surrounded by a magical barrier. These bracelets will kill anyone wearing them who attempts to cross. And as far as I know, most people who die just end up dead.

"I didn't. I was careful, more careful than most exiles here. I had planned for this eventuality, I had heard of the Exiled Lands and although there are no accurate maps there were things I knew. So when I did get exiled I knew where to go, and what to do. I survived, for longer than many people do here, at least if they don't join one of the many factions around here. And even when they do, I don't think they live very good lives.

"And then one day I died, despite my careā€”perhaps I was not as careful as I am pretending, right now, I grew bored, I raided a village of hyena cultists, and they sacrificed me to their god. And I woke up in my house."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that sounds like a gruesome to go, but I'm happy that you survived ...not surviving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trust me, I would have been extremely put off to die there," he says, smiling. "I still have far too many things to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry smiles back. "Anything we could help with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe, but let's think about that on the morrow. You have just arrived at a strange new place and been attacked by violent fauna, I am sure you must be very tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a suddenly eventful day, I give you that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This base does not have better accommodations or more private quarters, unfortunately, so we will have to sleep here. If there are no objections, though, I myself find the furs rather comfortable." He crawls over to another corner and grabs a sealed waterskin and a clay jug. "Water and red berry wine," he explains, offering them the containers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas accepts, taking a sip out of the wine to taste it, then passing it over to the other two.

"Thank you. I have definitely slept worse places with two or more guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry accepts the containers and... makes two tiny conical cups out of black onyx for himself and Gabe to drink from.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sorcery of yours looks extremely useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. It is, it lets me grow these crystals out of myself, absorb things, and duplicate absorbed things. And with enough practice a person can make their own kind of empowered crystal with a personal power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what is the cost?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, it hurts and it spends energy like a physical activity. Takes some time to learn how to do it right for the more complicated things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That... is less than I would have expected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magic can be very different between worlds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the local magic like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are... many kinds, I suppose. Most types of sorcery involve calling on gods or demons for it, offering them sacrifices. Of knowledge, or blood, or life. For something as useful and versatile as that, I would have expected... I don't know, sacrificing someone and imbibing their blood to absorb their life energy, or something."

He shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Charming."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry makes a face. "Well, any blood resulting from our magic is accidental. We have that much going for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plus, the duplication of nifty gadgets. Ooh, we should film him. With a focus on his cum-gutters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you should what with a focus on my what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cum-gutters are those lines on your waist that go towards you dick area," he says pointing at the relevant area on Taharqi's anatomy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"why"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is... just an expression, unless you are asking about the filming part?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am asking about the expression, but yes the filming part intrigues me also."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe just shrugs. "I just like the expression. Subtlety is not my style."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I assumed it was not a literal expression, more like how they channel your gaze into a direction that makes you cum?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So films. We have machines that can do things like record light and sound when you point them towards the thing you want to record, and some other machines can show you the record. Some machines can do both."

He pulls out his phone from his pocket, happy to see that the outer casing is a bit cracked, but the phone itself is whole and working. He opens the video gallery, showing a short clip of a brook.

Permalink Mark Unread

"ā€”that's incredible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you! I didn't invent the thing, but I did adjust and create this model. There are other functions and uses that require other people and machines, but it's handy. And I could make you a few."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few. Wow."

It is finally dawning on him what "copy" means, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas peers over Taharqi's shoulder at the phone. "I am disappointed you don't have any personal videos in there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He does, but in a hidden folder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Personal? Folder?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Videos of us fucking and the like. Folders are the things where the things that are the films are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... one of these?" he asks, pointing at the phone.

And, well, now he's getting affected by all this talk of fucking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, inside the phone, Henry can explain it better. I'm more interested in other areas." He lowers his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I can try explaining. I don't know if you will be too distracted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I vote for being too distracted," Thomas stage whispers into Taharqi's ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi grins. "I think I would be rather inspired by these... personal videos of yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pats Taharqi on the back. "Now we are talking!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry snorts, but he fiddles with his phone and unlocks the private folder. He selects a video of himself and Gabe in a pool. Gabe is already naked and pulls down Henry's swimming trunks; Henry "retaliates" by grabbing Gabe's head and """forcing""" Gabe to suck Henry's now exposed dick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, that is some... high resolution. Taharqi grins, licking his lips, and looks at Henry's crotch with a... pensive look in his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry grins and stands up to remove his shirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe, being ever so helpful, undoes Henry's pants and pulls them down. They do this process with practiced ease. Henry is wearing white briefs with a remarkable volume inside them. He gives Taharqi a look that seems to communicate the sense of an invitation to come forth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Thomas is definitely not going to be out of this fun, he starts stripping off too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're wearing pants under your pants," Taharqi observes, reaching for them to unceremoniously pull them down, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A common plight that affects many of us," Thomas says showing his own red underwear before pulling them down without ceremony.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are meant to protect the pants from- you know what? I can explain things later."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is just quietly ditching the rest of his clothes. But being quite happy about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

And since Henry is right there and he got all inspired he's gonna go ahead and grab Henry's dick to start playing with it.

He wants to take a lick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, he can have a lick, hopefully the taste of precum will please him. Henry reaches down to raise Taharqi's chin up. Then grabs his head behind the ear, to pull him in.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a bossy man. Taharqi appreciates it, and is all too easily pulled in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he can get an eyeful of Henry's lengthy and veiny cock. And also a mouthful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Thomas and Gabe will get more acquainted with each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's rather good with his tongue.

Also he has at least one hand that is not currently holding Henry's body parts so he wants to use it to find some other cock. Thomas's or Gabe's, one of theirs', surely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily there is some cock to be found: Thomas's. The additional hand is sure welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe happens to be on his knees, and his hands and mouth are busy too, but with a different part of Thomas's anatomy.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is pretty great. The hand that is busy with Henry's body is currently grabbing Henry's ass, making sure he is secure in his position full of cock in his mouth, but he can multitask and his other hand is not idle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Multitasking is a pretty useful skill to have. Thomas decides his mouth is too unbusy, so he will kiss Henry.  While getting a hand job and a rim job. That ought to help his multitasking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry appears mildly surprised, but not in a bad way, then he is kissing back while guiding Taharqi's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi is eager to please. It's a shame his hands are so busy and he doesn't really have any oil on hand because he would love to lube Henry up and finger him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is doing alright with fingering Thomas with just saliva.

Oddly scented, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well if Taharqi had spit to use he would but right now he is thoroughly enjoying this veiny dick in his mouth and does not want his tongue to go anywhere else.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is an entirely valid preference!

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is definitely not complaining about everyone's preferences right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry does have one complaint: Taharqi's dick is really not getting the attention it deserves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not like Taharqi himself can do anything about that. Or really minds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, would he mind if Henry wanted to return the favor and went down on him? Because while that might disrupt their amicable positioning... Henry just wants to go down on that cock, alright?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, sure, Henry can go down on that cock if he wants, he isn't complaining.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neither is Henry, hard to, given how much of a challenge it would be so much to take into his mouth. But Henry will valiantly (and delightfully) tmake the effort.

He is pretty well-trained, Taharqi can tell.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, fuck -" he moans when that happens. Yes, Taharqi can tell. "Great Serpent you're good at this," he says, running his hand through Henry's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have practice," Henry says between breaths. He gives a playful lick from the base of Taharqi's cock to the tip.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So much practice, thanks to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now Taharqi has to look.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is an easier challenge, but still quite a challenge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that that is going to stop Thomas.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi kinda wants to practise, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's an entirely relatable feeling. If only he had a dick of similar length and girth to Gabe's around.

Oh, wait, there sure is a resemblance here.

Permalink Mark Unread

A group of attractive men with pretty dicks just happened to stumble upon him and want to fuck him.

Lucky day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry can't entirely enjoy all moments of the day, but he is sure enjoying this moment too much to disagree. He also thinks that spitting on his fingers and rubbing them against Taharqi's hole is a good use of his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh okay yes he thinks that is a pretty great use of Henry's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isn't it just. It sure complements nicely what he is doing with his mouth!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay I'm going to need you to fuck me right now, this teasing is driving me crazy," he growls, clenching his asshole around Henry's fingers. "And I want someone else's dick in my mouth while you do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Finger wiggle. "If you insist. Gabe, can you give me some lube?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't be me if I didn't always carry some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a dick for your mouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze. "Then what are you waiting for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently nothing more than that. Open wide, barbarian.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry fetches the small package of lube that Gabe throws at him. Open wide, barbarian.

Permalink Mark Unread

The barbarian is wide open, front and back. He gets on all fours and perks his ass up while looking up at Thomas's face with a downright hungry expression on his face, then he opens his mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe helps Thomas get in a better position to insert his dick into Taharqi's mouth while getting fucked. He sure is having a good time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tasty.

Taharqi wiggles his butt. He's missing a dick somewhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not for long; after lubing him up, Henry diligently works on fulfilling Taharqi's needs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hhmmmmnnnnnnnnn," he moans, mouth too full of cock for anything more articulate than that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry kisses Taharqi's neck. And he reaches to stroke his cock with a hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he is - oh, fuck Gabe. I think he is enjoying it, Henry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi can't nod because of the mouthful of dick but he makes some very appreciative noises about being so filled up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poor sexy barbarian, can't even speak. Especially with how Thomas and Gabe are working together to face-fuck his wet mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's also working, making sure to match his own movements with their pumping, figuring out how to keep up with Gabe's thrusts as he sucks and licks Thomas's cock. He is also making the best noises, and his eyes are both shut in pleasure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Between breaths Thomas manages to say, "At this rate I'm going to come soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well Taharqi can pull away for long enough to give Thomas a look and then just point at his open mouth.

Then he resumes sucking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, give him what he wants. I will help," Gabe tells Thomas, twisting one of his nipples while saying this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well... since they are being so helpful.

Thomas builds up a back and forth movement to fuck himself on Gabe's dick, while also fucking Taharqi's mouth. Not holding back.

Then... release.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yes. Taharqi doesn't moan because he has to swallow and those activities are incompatible, but he's going to make sure to not miss a single drop of Thomas's cum.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas on the other hand does moan, and shudder, feeling the wave of hormones surges through his body. Then he takes a deep breath once it's over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi only lets Thomas's dick flop out of his mouth when he is sure there are no more loads coming, and he just grins up at the other man and licks his lips. "Thank you," he says, although the "you" is lengthened into a moan as Henry continues to thrust into him.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Henry is very proud.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," he moans. "Gabe, take your turn to feed our savior. I will go under and blow him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh okay sure drinking more cum sounds like a grand idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully he doesn't choke. But he sure looked quite experienced with Thomas.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is currently under Taharqi, returning the favor.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's definitely experienced enough. He decides to take the whole cock in, down into his throat, in one go, just to show off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, you are skilled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Less talking, more face-fucking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi's mouth is once more too full of cock for him to comment that Gabe can multitask, but also he wants to drive the other man into nonverbality so it suits him just fine. He reaches up with his right hand to grab Gabe's left buttcheek and then inch a finger towards his hole because... well, he wants to finger Gabe, duh.

As for his dick, being sucked by Thomas, it's leaking a fair amount of precum and hard as steel, and one might get the impression Taharqi is doing his utmost to hold off on coming.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe loves this plan of getting sucked and fingered at the same time. He moans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is alternating between trying to deepthroat Taharqi (which is a difficult enough task that he doesn't really manage) and licking his balls to give the poor sexy barbarian's dick some rest.

Permalink Mark Unread

The poor sexy barbarian has zero complaints here, and his thick sexy barbarian's middle finger is soon joined by one or two more in Gabe's asshole. He seems to be enjoying himself, being rather active both with his mouth and his hips. Just because he's being spitroasted doesn't mean he can't contribute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being spitroasted is a very important contribution to an orgy! Not that Gabe can comment very clearly. He moans again when the middle finger comes in. "More."

Permalink Mark Unread

Index finger goes in, and then ring finger does, too. He's effectively fingerfucking Gabe while sucking him off, and he decides that just to punctuate this he is going to actually deepthroat Gabeā€”just for a bit, Gabe is deliciously bigā€”while getting his three fingers all the way in to their base.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he want a squirming Gabe? Because Gabe is squirming! And grabbing Taharqi's head with force. The only coherent thing he manages is "fingers".

Permalink Mark Unread

Fingers sounds like an interesting idea... And there are a couple of holes and a couple hands free for those purposes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh, Henry also loves some overstimulation. Maybe not as much as certain people here (read Gabe), but he is not complaining.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay now Taharqi's dick starts twitching more in Thomas's hand; there's only so much he can take. His moaning intensifies and gets louder once he decides he doesn't want to hold back on coming anymore, and he starts pumping his dick into Thomas's mouth and sucking Gabe's cock desperately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is not going to let any of Taharqi's cum go to waist. His efforts shall be heroic in this endeavor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, is it coming time? Gabe guesses it's coming time. Or at least he doesn't see any reason why this orgy couldn't have another mouth filled with cum. Drink it up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi feels like it would be very silly and narratively incorrect to go "Ooh, more cum!" This is nonetheless what is going through his head when he feels Gabe's load start filling his mouth and he does his best to swallow it all, slurping the drops that dribble out the side of his lips and licking them all up. And the sheer hotness of drinking two hot guys' cum in rapid sequence like that drives him over the edge and he comes, too, filling Thomas up with what seems to be, and is indeed, several days' backlog.

He hasn't cum in a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas ha a vague notion that this is a lot of cum, but it's mostly eclipsed by the notion of how hot all of this is. Slurp.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry has an acute sense to know when Gabe is finishing coming, but is not out of his endorphin high. "I want the three of you to eat my cum."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is kneeling before the end of the sentence, although he takes a moment to French Taharqi's mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh that's hot as fuck. "Someone is bossy, huh?" he says, but he's on his knees, too, tongue out and eyes up like a good boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas also gets on his knees, taking a moment to peck Taharqi on the lips, before turning to Henry.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am bossy only to the people I like." He says this while patting Gabe's head. "Open wide you three." He strokes maybe about three times before starting to pump semen on their faces. He was being overstimulated just now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hot hot hot hottttt this might be the hottest thing that has ever happened to Taharqi.

Well. Spontaneously, at least. There were some more planned orgies back home...

Anyway.

He licks his lips and laps it up.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Henry moans and shudders, letting it all out. Only having enough presence of mind to bring Thomas's head closer so he can lap it up too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas didn't need the help, but he is sure appreciative. He licks and kisses Henry's dick and the others' mouths.

Permalink Mark Unread

So does Gabe. They can't have a single drop go to waste.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yum.

"Well that was fun," says Taharqi, laughing after pulling away from Thomas's kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sure was," Thomas says a bit breathlessly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry sits down next to Gabe. "Thank you, I am sure Gabe is really proud for having an orgy in less than a day after arriving in a new world." He kisses Gabe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got to keep your life interesting," Gabe says after the kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi's face is sticky. He licks his lips once more then walks outside their small covered area to get under the rain, again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, as much as Gabe likes it, even he wants to clean himself off. Henry and Thomas follow suit. "Want some soap?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"ā€”you have soap?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can make soap." He raises his hand showing a patch of dark crystal from which is growing a bar of cream-white soap.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should inventory all the things we can make. And all things we have on us to replicate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I will not refuse free limitless soap."

He can use it to help clean up in the rain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe offers him the bar. It smells like lavender. Then he and Henry start washing off each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can probably do the inventory thing tomorrow," Thomas suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sleeping is probably a good idea for tonight."

There are some furs he can use to dry himself and them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas accepts. He also helps to dry Taharqi off, just because.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry and Gabe also do that, but with more casualness and less obvious lust than Thomas.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Down, boy, we can fuck more in the morning," he says, laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas laughs along and makes an innocent face. "I know, I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In his defense, you sure are ridiculously tempting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I have ever been so nakedly lusted after."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, really? Does this mean everyone is as hot as you, so you don't stand out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't know," he replies, grinning. "Maybe you will tell me when you meet more people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, are there non-cannibal people around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Friendly people, cannibalism is a low bar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people aren't cannibals! I did not mean to give a different impression. Friendly is harder but still not impossible, I have a friend guarding my home back on the Highlands. I suppose I could bring him here for you to meet tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Besides Gabe's curiosity, I wanted to get a lay of the land. I am sorry for assuming that cannibals are overly common."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They mostly stick to the desert, anyway. You will not find many of them around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know. When you said you could bring your friend tomorrow, by what means would that be? Is your home a day's walk from here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, no, it's several days by horse. What I would do is die, reform my body back there, then bring him over using the magical teleportation map I built there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, gruesomely convenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is! Finding out that it worked for the first time was not that nice, but now that I do..." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I can make the death relatively painless, but still. I guess it's your call."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or we can decide tomorrow. After a nice night of rest cuddling each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!"

And after drying off, they can settle in for the night?

Permalink Mark Unread

They definitely can.

It's wet throughout the night, but it gets colder and colder. Their furs are enough to keep the warmth in, and then as morning comes the rain stops and a crisp morning sun's light hits them through the canopy.

Permalink Mark Unread

They've had worse sleeping conditions. At least they have each other. Henry wakes up early, but only gets up if Taharqi or Thomas are already awake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi is definitely already awake, although he's trying to be as quiet as possible as he fusses with some stuff in a box.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry presses a hand down on Gabe's chest so he doesn't move. Then he sits up and wordlessly greets Taharqi. The box thing might be private, so he doesn't call attention to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi returns the greeting and eventually pulls some dried and salted strips of meat from the box to hang over the embers of the campfire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry grins. And quietly scoots over towards the campfire. After a moment of scrutinizing the thing, he starts making something with his magical crystals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi just shoots him an inquisitive look but continues to smoke the meat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry is creating something to go around the campfire, his signature black crystal but apparently with something white underneath.

After that is done he starts creating a blue metallic kettle.

Permalink Mark Unread

By that point Thomas starts waking up. He blinks confusedly at his surroundings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi notices and offers him a wave and a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," Henry says, while also poking Gabe awake. "Do you want some coffee, Thomas? Taharqi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe wakes up. Without any preamble he stands up, showing his massive morning wood while stretching.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I know what that is," says Taharqi, unashamedly staring at Gabe's wood.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's get-awake-juice. And sure, Henry. Isn't making that food that fast bad calorically wise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am planning to reuse the kettle and most of the volume will be water. Which I won't make."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of making water, excuse me, but nature is calling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go answer its call," laughs Taharqi. "I think I will pass on the get-awake water. I'll be fine once I die."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe leaves the tent to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not too much effort if you want to. You sure earned it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, how long should it take to make the round trip?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should be back within an hour."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I guess we can wait until you are back to ponder more deeply about our situation or give explanations about capabilities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too bad we forgot to film last night's orgy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you jump to that train of thought?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can film fuck videos as one of our capabilities."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi laughs. "Maybe we should have another one later. Do you want me to do anything, show you guys anything, before I go meet my maker?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I don't know, but maybe Henry can be the expert pessimist again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, I so enjoy being that. How long should we wait for you? What should we do if you don't return? If we start building or creating lights around the place will it get attention?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I don't come back in two hours something seriously wrong has happenedā€”really, even an hour is an exaggeration, but let us be safeā€”but." He sticks his head out of the tent, looks around, then points towards the east. "See that tall slab of black rock over there, with the purple smoke around it? I should come from there, with Sendhei."

Permalink Mark Unread

Peers.

"Alright. If something happens we will try to leave some signal either here or there for you to find, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe returns, alleviated and washed of hands. "So, lets have breakfast?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was preparing some food for you here," says Taharqi, gesturing at the meat. "Make yourselves at home." And he gets up and starts walking out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are great," Gabe says going for the food without a second thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" he calls. Then he's at the edge of the tower this base is built atop of and he tips forwardā€”

ā€”lets himself fall, headfirstā€”

ā€”there's a loud crack from the ground a second later and there is absolutely no way he survived that, but if he did the roar of the panthers that can be heard, probably startled by the sound, limits the prospects of survival even further.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry does look over to confirm that, yes, that is a dead barbarian. "I should've offered a neater way of offing himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yikes, I will eat my breakfast before taking a look at that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair."

They have breakfast and then make an inventory of all they brought with them. Definitely not "travel to a new world" sort of variety, but even everyday stuff a Gabe uses will be quite versatile. Thomas's area was construction. Henry's was electronics with a focus on wifi mesh networks. They might not kick off the information age by themselves, but they sure have a lot.

They check the replication crystal. No visible forms inside, but it's growing. Henry doesn't know how to feel about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes only a bit over fifteen minutes before there is a barely-visible flash of light from the obelisk Taharqi pointed out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good? Good. By that point they have already consumed their breakfast. Thomas is making a toothbrush for himself while accounting for all materials they brought in or have stored as crystal-data.

Permalink Mark Unread

And in a couple of minutes Taharqi has walked back to the ruins and is climbing the rope ladder. "Hello! This is Sendhei, and these are Henry, Gabe, and Thomas. I hope I have not butchered your names."

The man that followed him up the ladder is shorter and slightly lighter-skinned than he, but similarly naked and shaven everywhere except for a short mohawk of light brown hair along the middle of his scalp. He's also thinner and has a wirier build, defined as a dancer's body instead of built for combat and survival like Taharqi's. "Nice to meet all of you," he says, hopping the last step of the ladder up and into the tent and smiling at them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likewise," Henry says."You pronounced it fine, Taharqi.'

He is the only one wearing anything (underwear).

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe makes no effort to pretend he is not staring. "Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did Taharqi explain anything at all about us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope," shrugs Sendhei. "Just that some magic sent you here from very far away and you wanted to meet more friendly faces."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that is the quick version. We have magic that lets us absorb and then complicate things." He waves at the grid of materials they laid down on the tent's floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And have come in contact with several things we managed to duplicate that are useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe takes this opportunity to show the video they showed Taharqi last night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sendhei was about to say something but he stops when he sees the video and then immediately gets a boner. "What," he says, weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can use this to record sex and then show the recording later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It records sights and sounds. Not just sex. And before we get into another orgy, I want to explain some things first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another?" asks Sendhei, turning to look at Taharqi, who merely grins and shrugs.

"Can you blame me?"

    "Yes." He pouts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have never explained this before. So I don't know the common questions... our crystals can duplicate people too. Gabe and I - but not Thomas - are one of many copies to come out of a crystal that wasn't working properly and we don't know how to make it stop. A chunk of that crystal came with us and it might still be making more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are like dozens of them stuck on a island with a bunch or non-copied people like me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...the orgies you must get up to there would definitely rank up in the hottest things in my life, hands down," says Taharqi, and Sendhei is just slack-jawed at the thought.

There are now two boners present in this conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got it right. Gabes have a sex club and everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We Gabes are very proud."

New video, it starts with a close-up of a butt being used as a bongo. Then the shot widens to reveal a line of Gabes using a line of mostly naked Gabes as bongos. The video pans to a tied Gabe surrounded by a mix of Henries and other men.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sendhei laughs at that one. "That's... such a weird thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The tied up one is my Gabe. We were celebrating the day we emerged from the crystal." He pets Gabe's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

    "Awwww. That's cute."

"I could use multiple Sendheis..." says Taharqi thoughtfully.

    "You could?"

"It would be hot!"

"You don't fuck me that often," says Sendhei, pouting again.

"Well I get busy. More of me would be useful, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...we could try but it would take a while. We mostly self-taught on how to use our magic and this crystal is unusual for duplicating automatically without stopping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not everyone takes nicely to being a clone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it would be very hot. Fucking yourself is an underrated experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's not really a rated experience, so much. And it was mostly idle thinking, I did not have specific plans about acquiring clones."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe mock pouts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway, so our future plans will depend on what happens in a few months - maybe sooner - if clones emerge from the thing. So we will want to settle down somewhere that can accommodate our growth rate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The highlands are rather spacious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be the case you'd have us - multiple us - as neighbors. But we might be getting ahead of themselves. Another piece of... news is that Gabes sometimes find a place between worlds shaped like a tavern. With people from many worlds. It's how we got people like Thomas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Peculiar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the extreme. Still, if you open a door and doesn't lead where it usually does, you don't have to panic and may go inside. Unless, there is a symbol like this," he makes a heart-shaped symbol, "decorating the place. Temporary love at first sight effect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try to keep it in mind."

"Hey can we have an orgy?" Tiny meowing sound! "ā€”Taharqi have you found yet another animal to take care of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas raises the pen where they isolated the tiny creature. Gabe gave it a sparkly, but tasteful collar - putting it on was the hard part. "He did, killed his family while heroically saving us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How sure are you it won't seek revenge once it is grown?"

"Fairly!"

"Well, okay, if you say so. It is adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Admittedly, I don't know the species here, but it looks like the kind of animal that might eat you no matter how properly you raise them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, but as Sendhei put it. The murder kitty is adorable. And when it becomes a large murder kitty it will be cool if Taharqi can bring it to battle. It fits the aesthetic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry gives him a no-nonsense look. "Well, there is probably a way to reduce its risk." Pause. "Sorry if I was being too critical. Mes have a sort of keep-things-safe role on the island and having more of me around made it stronger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He already has a pair of greater snow wolves, a crocodile, and a shaleback," Sendhei comments. "Plus the two horses."

"But I mean, again, if it kills me, I can just come back. Oh! Speaking of which! I found something out. When I died I had the distinct impression that I could choose to come back to life here rather than back home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, cool? Morbid, but cool. What is a shaleback?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's... a reptile? About as tall as me when it's crouching down, four legs, big shell? Also be right back, I will go die and check if I can reform here."

And without waiting he gets up to start walking out of the tent for a swift death.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry stops him.

"I made you some poison for you to kill yourself, assuming you know poisons to be safe."

He hands over a metallic flask with a skull engraved.

Permalink Mark Unread

"ā€”that sounds like a bad idea. My body would remain here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could just push it to the ground, your other body is still down there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The panthers haven't eaten it yet?" He accepts the flask with the poison and looks at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry hands it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You barely gave the poor things time."

Permalink Mark Unread

So he drinks it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a few seconds, but then it's like his chest feels progressively heavier. A minute later, it's like there is a boulder on his lungs. It doesn't exactly hurt, he is feeling numb too, and his legs give out. Henry helps him keep standing. Sight dims, going completely black after a minute, then he slips into coldness.

Overall, it might depend on if one prefers to quick and sharp, over slow and fading.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quick and sharp. Definitely quick and sharp.

And he's dead.

"That was really creepy," Sendhei opines.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, for once Henry being scarier didn't make him hotter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, but we didn't have anything that acted as a poison. Or at least nothing that was painless."

Henry pushes the body over the rail.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few more seconds there's a floating green ball of light, the size of a marble, and then it grows and becomes an oval gem. The bracelet reforms first, attached to the floating gem. Then the arm grows from it, in a kind of creepy way where the bones start reforming before the sinew and nerves and muscles and skin, and his body is whole, lying on the wooden floor, after only another ten seconds.

And then he opens his eyes. "One, the faster method is better. Two, I think... there is some... recharge mechanism. To this."

    "Recharge?"

"Yeah, er. I don't know exactly how it works but it definitely felt like I was consuming something, some resource, just now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, if you die too many times too close it will be permanent death? Or we will have to wait more time before that anatomy lesson we just got?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry if my poison wasn't pleasant," Henry says oddly uncomfortably.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh it was alright, don't worry about it, it just took too long and I am a very impatient person." To Thomas: "I think the former, yeah. And I think... the location has to be somewhere I spent a long time in... but that doesn't explain why other people can't do it."

    "I can."

"Yeah, I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, do people die as much as you do? Because I think even respawn immortals need to get used to just jumping off a tree. Sounds worthy for a Henry to check."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It sure is. I don't suppose there is a way to get the bracelet without an owner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no ideaā€”well, no, that is a lie, I do know where bracelets come from, but there are not any spares lying around as far as I know. They disappear when someone dies, usually, but in our case they reform on our new bodies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, it is a long-term plan and priority depends on the numbers of mes we have around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dude, I know that you and Gabe have this whole Dom and Sub thing going on. But you really have to remember other people can be responsible. Sure, I am absolutely thinking about riding Sendhei's dick. But I can still contribute besides being hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not just hot. I am willing to serve people's sexual needs. And keeping things fun in general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if I want to ride?" asks Sendhei.

Taharqi grins. "To answer your earlier question, the observation I have made is that I have seen other exiles die and they did not seem to respawn," he tells Thomas.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas grins back. "That was also on my mind," he tells Sendhei, then to Taharqi: "Well, that sucks. Do the bracelets look different? Could be a model or something. But duplicating magical things and figuring out how they work is something the crystals can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

He raises his hands.

"It is an advanced technique. But even if you want to pick it up, it would be worth having a Henry to do complementary research."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are all as far as I can tell identical," he replies to Thomas. "I... should probably have asked the ghost of the Archivist about this. It's one of the giant-kings who helped create them, thousands of years ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, too bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if he is not available we can still figure out things on our own. And... well, that," he points, "is a person-replication crystal. Even if it stopped producing endless copies of us, it's still a good base material for something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh he's available, it's just a pain to get to him. ...well, less of a pain with the map-room back home, but right now I think I want to chill on the 'dying' thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't worry. We are kind of thinking way waaay ahead here. We should be more focused on shelter, non-crystal food sources, general security and stability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See with whom we can share our technological and magical marvels with? Or at least tell people to keep their latrines away from water sources."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can probably build good enough shelter for all of you over the course of todayā€”"

    "Wait, but orgyā€”" starts Sendhei.

"That can wait." (Pout.) "I still have meat to last us a couple of days, and it should not be difficult to get more, even if panther meat is not the nicest. Maybe Sendhei could fetch us some dried elk king meat." (Grumble grumble grumble.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pats Sendhei on the shoulder.  "We will get there buddy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry covers Gabe's mouth.

"Is that time estimation counting our help? There ought to be ways to speed up the process. Or at least create a few amenities, like self-generating water crystals, lights, fans... of the self-moving kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...fans? Like, big paper... things... that you wave at people for wind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same function different form. You just leave it somewhere convenient and the blades - not actual blades, that is just the term - spin and move the air. No need for people to wave them manually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For that we will need a solar panel, but we should do that anyway. And we could create ice generating crystals for water and turn the fans into air conditioning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our not magic does not-magic things that move," Gabe says to the apparently confused barbarian. "We have sex toys that vibrate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"ā€”okay that might take more than a day but it also sounds, ah... unnecessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh? No... between the three of us, it sounds very doable in a day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is why I asked if you included our help. Which you didn't answer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was including your help in my estimates, yes," he says, sounding amused, "but all I had in mind was a ceiling."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas eyes his surroundings with a calculating look. "Do you want to, like, take a day's rest while I do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I absolutely do not, if you can speed that up I want your help to build the rest of the base." He gestures towards the barely-built bridge. "I want to finish that bridge and extend some more platforms over the rest of the ruins, and eventually build some actual stairs. I was also thinking of finding a good place for a water well but your magic seems like it will obviate that."

"He is a workaholic," Sendhei stage-whispers to Gabe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am used to the type." He waves at Henry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry apparently takes that as a compliment and pats Gabe's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not complaining about the opportunity to build your base." Grin. "Can you explain what you have planned in depth? It might take a while to get enough water for all uses, but drinking water should be easy enough."

He starts forming drawing utensils out of crystals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well he can draw what he has in mind, then: the platform they're on is just a temporary balcony of sorts that he's starting from, and he wanted to then have two different platforms with small houses on each, at different elevation levels. The idea is that to get from the ground to the first level you would need to go up the stairs, and so there's a bottleneck to protect; and from there to the next floor with another bottleneck higher up. And good visibility from both places so he can shoot arrows from them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. Thomas starts drafting how they can go about building that with the additions they bring to the table. While the base itself is not hidden, does he want it to be visibly not normal? Being externally made of unfamiliar materials? They can make structures that look normal from the outside but are from this really advanced building material that Thomas loves because it's so convenient.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, if they don't mind, Henry will get on creating a solar panel - with a side explanation that their phones need those to keep working. But he is willing to help once their planning stage is done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe works on creating the water-producing crystals. Easy enough. He can even do that while helping with construction, or talking to Sendhei.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi didn't have any specific plans and really only wants this base because he is planning on storming the base of the Witch Queen. "Oh, right, that, I should explain about what I'm doing here in the first place shouldn't I..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We got distracted, yes. Please, explain?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"These bracelets," he says, lifting his left wrist, "were created by the giant-kings and the humans, a long time ago, to allow for cooperation and communication. I thought all they were originally meant to do was let us understand the language of the giant-kings, but given that I can understand you and you can understand me the effect must be broader than that."

"ā€”oh, they were speaking a different language, now that I think about it..." says Sendhei.

"Yes. But the giant-kings included other elements to their sorcery, in secret. They have a kill switch, and an in-built distance limitation which kills anyone who goes beyond the cursewall. They are also what lets me use the map-room to teleport to obelisks like that one," he says, pointing in the direction he and Sendhei came from, "and, presumably, they are what lets me come back to life afterwards.

"The relevant part is the cursewall. Although I would prefer to stay immortal, I would give this up to return home. And I found a magical staff inhabited by a demon. He used to be an advisor, way back when, and he knew about the bracelets. He said I should look for the Archivist, one of the three rulers of the giant-kings, in the Unnamed City, to the west. I did, and I found his ghost. He said it is possible to destroy the bracelets, but only if we reassemble the artefacts that were used in their creation. One of these artefacts is the Mask of the Witch Queen, which should be in the ancient ruins of her cityā€”but it seems to be filled with ancient magicks and apes that walk like humans. So I have decided to build this base to prepare, before going in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is destruction the only option here? No way to tweak the effect? Also did I mention my antimagic crystals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No way to tweak the effect that he knew of, and no you did not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My bad. Too many things to keep track of. Each person can make a kind of crystal with a specific power. Mine - and any Henry's - is antimagic. I doubt it can get past the cursewall or destroy the bracelet, but it can be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could it disable the bracelet for long enough that I would be able to remove it without dying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? But I would like to test it with other forms of local magic in case it fails catastrophically or something. It might just have no effect. It sounds like a powerful artifact that might need a huge pile of anti-magic crystals to counter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They have additive effects, like that? I guess it makes sense. So much for hoping for a quick and easy solution." Sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be an easy solution. But if it can do so much and last so long it probably isn't. And it might explode in our faces."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're such a ray of sunshine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not explode. But I would want to test with a weaker and less essential sort of magic item before doing anything with the bracelets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have those. ...I suppose technically the food is those," he adds, contemplatively.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink. "What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When preparing food," he explains, "it's just occurred to me to mention it since your magic is so different, it is standard to add some enchantments to it, to reinforce it and make it help with healing and regeneration and energy..."

"Wait," says Sendhei, paying full attention for the first time in a bit. "It is?"

"...is it not?"

"I don't know any magic to do that!"

"...huh. Okay, maybe it is not as standard as I had thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you teach me that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We would like to learn it too. Magic food sounds like a safe test. I still expect to require a lot of crystal to make it work on the bracelet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it should be reasonably easy to teach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neat. Does this change your plans for what we do with the base today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am still not entirely sure how much your magic would speed us up but not meaningfully, I don't think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't recommend changing any plans so far. Even if it turns out that all that separates you from freedom is me poking you with a tiny bit of antimagic crystal, it might be worth it to learn our magic before leaving. Or get loaded with useful things we can give you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, definitely. I was not thinking I would return home anytime soon, anyway. It will be years, still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry to hear that dude. But on the bright side. Multiple ways to break free. New magic. New technology too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. And speaking of that, shall we begin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall."

Crystal magic turns out to be extremely handy for construction. The crystals themselves can be used as tools. Instead of using an axe to cut lumber, it's possible to just turn part of the wood into crystal, and detach that for a clean cut. Instead of nails, one can turn a nail-shaped bit of wood into steel. Crystal can even be used for scaffolding.

Permalink Mark Unread

...okay yes that is super useful. What do they want to focus on first, a roof over their heads or continuing on with the bridge? Do they have any ideas for changes or input into the layout?

(And how do they feel when Sendhei gets bored and starts dancing out of nowhere, with accompanying drum music coming from thin air?)

Permalink Mark Unread

A roof over their heads sounds like the most important priority. Thomas has some input mostly related to how they are not constrained to rectangular forms, but he thinks that they can leave his dome ideas for the second tower. There are some amenities-related additions like a closed off water closet, and a public shower space.

Thomas can start the materials for the bridge, some really strong fiber that can be left growing until there is enough for the bridge's extent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry wants space to put solar panels, lights and network nodes, but those are easy enough to accommodate.

Permalink Mark Unread

How does Taharqi feel about adding a sex-sling area? They don't have time to finish one today, but it sounds like a worthwhile addition.

Everyone feels positive about Sendhei dancing! Gabe takes a moment to film him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yeah it doesn't all need to be rectangular, it was just easier to do that or maybe hexagonal. He's not optimising for only aesthetic value, although that is a consideration from a selfish perspective. The idea of indoors showering is... interesting... while the idea of a sex-sling is mostly, like, what the hell is a sex-sling even.

As for Sendhei, he'll keep dancing for a while, which has the magic effect of making them tire less easily and keep their energy up. Eventually, though, the tiny panther kitten mews and Sendhei takes on the responsibility of taking care of it, at least for the moment. He's been caring for Taharqi's other wild rescues back at the main house, he's got practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas was not entirely going for aesthetics, arches and domes are actually quite structurally sound.

Also, hexagons are bestagons.

(No, he doesn't explain what he means by that.)

Indoors showering is mostly a matter of safety, but also they should be able to get hot water soon enough, which is nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sex sling is kinda like hammock, designed to provide support during sex.

Tiny panther is cute, too, no reason to break the long tradition of cute cat videos.

Permalink Mark Unread

Except to focus on work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Except for that; luckily, he can multitask.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi is happy to follow the lead of Mr. structurally sound! They build.

Permalink Mark Unread

Build they do, quite literally laying the foundations for the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

It occurs to Henry to test if the translation magic works on machines. Does Sendhei want to test that?

Permalink Mark Unread

...sure? Test it how?

Permalink Mark Unread

By speaking to the phone like this. Just repeating what Henry says, and see if the device reacts like something understandable was said. He can also try to understand the words coming out from the device too.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can repeat the sounds Henry says, sure? But the translation mechanism does not work for understanding anything that is recorded unless Henry, Gabe, or Thomas repeat it out loud afterwards. It also does not seem to work on any of the text on the phones.

Permalink Mark Unread

So it apparently only works on humans, or at least it doesn't work on non-living machines. If either of the two are interested, this kind of phone comes with a language learning mechanism and can take vocal commands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, they're game.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry sets it up. One local and one foreigner may work together for the purpose of this. The phone will ask for a word or phrase, a foreigner may translate, and then the local can provide the translation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi is kinda busy with construction but Sendhei is a lazy bastard a dancer and not cut out for much manual labour so he'll help.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Henry was going to suggest Gabe to help him with the task. But on consideration, Gabe can help with the manual labor. Henry will recite the phone's words for Sendhei to repeat back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe mock pouts, but will go help to lift heavy things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it because Sendhei and Gabe would definitely start fucking? It is because they would definitely start fucking, isn't it.

He pouts, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

They would definitely start fucking, yes. Sorry, but they have stuff to do. Henry reassures the lazy bastard dancer that there will be a nice orgy at the end of the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, Sendhei is happy with this. He'll also probably jump off the ruins afterwards because he should go back home to check on the wolves but yes definitely orgy beforehand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry pats him on the back. They will try to not leave him too tired for that task, but still satisfied. And presumably he can swing by for more orgies.

Permalink Mark Unread

He probably can! He did attune his bracelet to this obelisk just now when Taharqi brought him with so he will not need an escort next time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Henry is sure he and Gabe will have a lot of things in common. Also, please this phrase: "show me folder named videos".

Permalink Mark Unread

He says it in his language.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. The phone reacts accordingly. They keep working on this, while making more bits of his not-magic-technology through magic. Taking breaks when Henry needs to install something in a specific area of the structure. Hopefully, this means that Sendhei will be able to access videos and pictures by himself. Maybe even filming one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sendhei is... honestly tempted.

The panther kitty meows some more and is fed, and panther not-kitties downstairs react to this as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Should they do something about those?

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi can behead them if they get to be too much of a nuisance but he's fine just letting them be if the others aren't too bothered. They'll have to be dealt with eventually when they go down to set up any necessary beams and pillars, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas' crystal power is controlling earth, he can use it offensively with enough set up? He wonders if it's worthwhile fencing off the area with electric fences or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

...with what again? That sounds like a very good idea, especially given the purges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Purges? Electricity is the same thing as lightning, and tiny precise amounts of it is how many of their technology works. Larger, less precise amounts of it can be put through metal lines for added security. It can hurt real bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, man, purges. Uh, every now and then there are coordinated attacks around his camp for reasons he can only speculate about. He has so far managed to hold them off a few times but they've been getting worse over time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yikes. Thomas will make a mental note to design more thorough defenses. Maybe excavate a moat around their base?

Permalink Mark Unread

The soil is too uneven; these ruins are set atop some hills and cliffs, and there isn't enough structural stability for a moat. This does mean that any purges coming here will face similar troubles, though, and the electric fence should be a good deterrent.

"Not for the giant snakes," says Sendhei.

"Probably not for the giant snakes," agrees Taharqi.

Permalink Mark Unread

How giant are the giant snakes?

Permalink Mark Unread

Their heads are about the size of Taharqi's torso.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yikes. Maybe he should be mass-producing shield crystals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas can't think of an easy defense against something like that, but he might come up with some kind of weapon? Still, he will accept some of Gabe's shield crystals just for additional protection.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are part of the reason Taharqi decided to make his base a tree-house rather than something on the ground, yes! And then he can shoot arrows at them until they are gone or die.

Permalink Mark Unread

Clever. Thomas kinda wants to design some defenses against them, but they should focus on having a base to defend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Construction goes for a while longer but they can pause around midday for food and Taharqi can teach them how to do the food magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Please, do show the food magic. Maybe with a side explanation on the dance magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sendhei figures that dancing magic should probably wait until they have not just eaten. It is very physically intensive.

But now: food magic! There are steps, in the order you put ingredients in and quantities and stuff... but it's all a shorthand. In order to do the food magic you need to get into a certain mental state while preparing the food, and imbue your actions with the feeling associated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it hard to learn? Could Thomas try picking it up?

Permalink Mark Unread

It... shouldn't be hard per se, but it takes some practice to get at the appropriate mental states.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Thomas is willing to try, not willing to waste food on it. But at least an attempt can be made.

Permalink Mark Unread

This could be some kind of native-exclusive magic, but it's worth checking.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't waste any food, if he fails all that does is make the food not have any magic, it doesn't make it go bad or anything.

Native-exclusive how?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some kinds of magic can only be used by people born in a specific world. Or descedants thereof.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds very disappointing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

The important thing is: can Thomas make it work?

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably not over a single meal, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh, he can try later. Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom!

Back to construction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to construction! Thomas thinks it's going rather well. When they are not too distracted, he asks about Taharqi's world and homeland.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, in particular?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas shrugs. "I don't know, how different or similar the place you grew up was from here?" he offers. "How big was the settlement? What is the most advanced bit of not magic you heard about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi smiles. "Well, this is the Exiled Lands. I am pretty sure nowhere else is like here." He shakes his head. "I am from the Kingdom of Kush, and I was raised by nobility, so I led a fairly comfortable life until I left. I'm not really sure how to answer that last question, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things that have been discovered or invented recently that you have heard about?" He shrugs. "Have you ever heard of a sextant? Or a compass? Materials like concrete? I believe your axe is made out of steel, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, no, no, yes," he says, raising an eyebrow. "I don't think I have heard of any recent... inventions, as such."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... that pretty much exhausts how much I know about the history of technology." Thomas shrugs. "On the bright side, we should figure out how to give you a thousand years' head start on a lot of things. Mass production without all the smog. Neat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smog?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The simple version is that some kinds of machines require you to burn things for them to work. They are useful enough to become quickly popular and there would be so much of them that towns would get perpetually covered by smoke clouds, like a fog."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That sounds... very unpleasant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Extremely!" Thomas says brightly. "But we can just skip the nasty parts. Maybe come out famous enough to have statues in our honor."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi laughs. "I think I'm fine but you do you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Thanks. Anyway, hold this support beam up?"

And they go back to construction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to construction they go.

After they have sufficiently digested their food, Sendhei can start teaching the dance magic. It's pretty similar in concept to the music magic but involves more body movements to trigger the appropriate mental states.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting, what sort of things does it do? It's presumably something Sendhei could teach? Henry is willing to give it a try.

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps with making people feel more energetic and recover from trauma, physical or mental.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe can see how watching dancing naked men would have that effect. Maybe Henry should remove his underwear to improve his chances of learning it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyway, he tries to mimic Sendhei's movements to achieve the effect.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will not succeed in replicating anything, not today at any rate. Sendhei tries to correct his posture, and has useful tips on how to achieve that, so he can improve at least in the physical aspect of it, but even regular dancing takes more than just a day to learn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry is fine with that learning rate and tries his best to incorporate the corrections.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Henry should get rid of the underwear (he is the only one wearing anything) to facilitate movement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're getting a bit repetitive, there," he tells Gabe with no heat. "That piece of clothing does look kind of... strangely constraining, though. I don't think I have ever seen it."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Gabe just shrugs.)

"It's meant to give the outer layer of clothing some protection from... products from that area. And also some support, I guess. It's not particularly constraining."

Pause.

"Just to be sure, you don't think one needs to be naked to perform the dance magic?" He asks Sendhei.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not at all, what you're wearing doesn't matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Sorry, Gabe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's kinda silly to hold to the concept of modesty, but I got the sense that Henrys just be silly like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The concept of... what, now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Modesty is like being ashamed of being naked? Or thinking that being naked is shameful? It's a silly rule, but societies sometimes just be like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shameful. Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's mostly an excuse to oppress people by making them feel bad about random things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... am not going to defend modesty as a concept. But it's not only about oppression? Or rather..." he pauses to think. "People often seek structure to feel like they have some sense of control. So they come up with silly rules before they know any better or know ways to deal with problems. So they go 'cover your genitals' because they don't know how to stop unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sexual diseases. That... sounds worrying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys don't have those? Or... are you sure you don't have those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, no, I'm not sure." He looks down at his unblemished penis. "I don't think I have any, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas kneels down and gives the beautiful unblemished penis an exaggeratedly inquisitive look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry for worrying you. It's possible that you don't because of your healing magic. Or it simply didn't spread to where you live. And there are ways to prevent infection. And pregnancies for that matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, the three of us are safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have moon tea for unwanted pregnancies, that should be just fine."

    "Safe?" asks Sendhei.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't have any diseases like that. Or any diseases, the tavern between worlds - which is called Milliways - we got things from there that mean we won't get sick from nearly anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good to know about the moon tea thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am pretty sure my world used to have something like that. The plant went extinct because people used it too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not ever having any diseases sounds extremely handy though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a shot of a substance called 'vaccine'. We didn't bring any with us... we might be able to figure something out with crystal magic. Crystal magic can on itself cure people from diseases too. But both applications are rather complex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too bad we didn't bring Henry Doctor and Gabe Nurse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of those words refer to anything we have," says Taharqi with some awe. "Not... exactly, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which words?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doctor and nurse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, okay. Anyway, I am not making any promises, but diseases in general sound like a far more tractable problem now that we are here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway-anyway, we lost sight of the original point. Which I am pretty sure is that Henry should be naked like everyone else. Or something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry demonstrates he can move really fast and throw pieces of fabric with pretty good accuracy. At least at targets the size of Thomas' face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sendhei giggles and Taharqi rolls his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for the prize. I shall treasure it always."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, now that I went native, may we get back to work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They may! Building building building.

Permalink Mark Unread

Building!

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of them are technically crafting, but that is part of the building (both the verb and the noun).

Permalink Mark Unread

The day is uneventful, and slowly fades to night.

Permalink Mark Unread

A much clearer night than usual with the LEDs around the structure.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's very strange to have this much light at night."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "We can dim them if you'd rather. Might be useful to not attract unwanted attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't make much difference, at least not up here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair point. And it's not like it is making the view any worse. Especially in a night like this when you can see the stars-" Thomas starts saying while looking up.

He pauses and squints.

"I think I am recognizing those constellations." He looks for the moon, is the moon visible?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure is, rabbit and all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...and the moon. Hey, Henry. We are on an Earth again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, are you sure? I guess it's a common type of world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. The moon looks pretty much the same, and I am pretty sure that is the Orion constellation." He points.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh?" asks Sendhei.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Huh?' to what part?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's 'an Earth'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's the name of a world, or rather a planet that shows up in different worlds. They have similar properties, like similar shape, having humans, having the same sky. My world has an Earth. Thomas was in one before joining us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are bizarrely similar, but with surprising differences, like having different kinds of magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. So you are from a world like ours? And you would know where we are relative to... wherever you were?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas makes a so-so gesture. "Yes. And In very vague terms? I think we are not too far south, probably not far north. Constellations change over time so I can't be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry pulls out a 3D map of Earth on his phone. "Do you recognize any of this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...no. It's... a sphere?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spheroid. But yes. People are pulled down by the force of gravity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The force of pulling things down," he repeats, sounding amused.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And a harsh mistress. Anyway, I guess we should figure out the time period. And where we are relative to everything. Not sure how, but this information ought to be helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait back up though are you implying that we are on a sphere?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A really, really big one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose it must be!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I bet we can send a phone really up high to see the curvature of the Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's manageable. Might even figure out which continent we are on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Big landmass, like an island... And there are multiple of those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Four to six of those, depending on how you count!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Al...right. Sounds exciting to explore."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "I am sure it is going to be!" He looks between Taharqi and Sendhei. "Have you guys heard of elephants? Giraffes? Lions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, no, yes," says Taharqi, and Sendhei nods. "I have killed elephants and lions myself, there are some here on the Exiled Lands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we are somewhere in Africa or maybe the Middle-East?" He shows that on the Earth map. "The continent is known to have darker-skinned people like you two. And the animals I mentioned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How... big is the sphere, exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pokes at the map to get that. "About forty million of this unit of distance." He puts his hands about one meter apart.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I can fit something that big in my head," says Sendhei lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one can!" Thomas says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it was possible to walk at a steady pace around the world without finding obstacles and doing it every day all day it would take a bit less than one year to do that before you returned to where you started. Does that help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes slack-jawed at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, you see, it's a big world out there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it. Maybe after I overthrow my government and kill a few gods I will go on a relaxing world-exploration trip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Count me in. Sounds like a fun time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not as enthusiastic about the whole overthrowing and killing, but I would like to explore as well. Definitely at least one of me should be a Henry Librarian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe if they didn't want to be overthrown or killed they should have thought twice before sucking so much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was commenting on my enthusiasm, not on the necessity of your plan. Anyway, I want to figure out where we are. Balloon up a camera and see what it shows us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How are you going to do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you ever tried to hold something full of air underwater, and it tried to float up? Similar principle but with something lighter than air. I will disassemble a camera and put the bare minimum to take images sand transmit them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. I guess we will make a small hot air balloon then? Hot air is lighter than cold air," he explains to the locals. "Get a crystal that makes something hot to heat the air inside the balloon. Send it up, wait to receive the pictures."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Receive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we never explained that phones can send and receive information?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We got too caught up on the main application of storing and displaying porn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You never did, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, ironically that is their actual original purpose. Then a bunch of extra functions got easy to tack onto them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry raises a hand to catch everyone's attention before there are more porn jokes. "They are one of the many kinds of devices that make contact with networks to receive and distribute information. With the right sort of infrastructure they allow you to talk to people anywhere on the same planet, practically instantaneously. Said kind of network is often called the internet. This particular model of phone," he waves at his own which Thomas took, "is made so as be useful without the extensive infrastructure, so it has a much shorter range, but still works. They use each other to transmit things, and if you distribute them over a given area, that area will have its own mini-network. I was thinking of doing that so your other home and this one would still have contact."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that would be extremely useful."

"Are you sure that's not magic?" asks Sendhei.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is extremely useful, yes. And it's not magic, but it is very complicated technology."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, go on, then, show it to us. I will feed us in the meantime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, sure, but it's night. Early night, so we might get lucky and see some shots with the sun in the horizon."

The three divide the tasks. Henry creates the core electronics. Gabe creates the balloon. And Thomas creates a tower/antenna to receive the signals.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Taharqi has food!

Permalink Mark Unread

And they have a balloon. "We should do this tomorrow morning as well for a better view." He prepares the balloon and releases it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi watches it while he eats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry sets a screen to display the pictures they regularly receive. He starts eating, paying attention to see when things get interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sure is a horizon! As the balloon goes farther and farther up, it does seem like Thomas's prediction that they are in Africa is correct, except... this Africa looks maybe a bit different?

Permalink Mark Unread

How so?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's getting darker and harder to see, but Europe should not be this... close... and neither should Asia?

Permalink Mark Unread

True. "I don't understand. It's like someone made an off-brand version of Earth. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"A what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In this case, it's like someone tried to make an Earth but didn't get it right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did they miss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pulls up the world map and shows the difference. "Continents shift and change, but I don't think they do that much and still have..." he waves at the panther's pen, "recognizable animals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That is pretty different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is... it could still technically count as an Earth, they are not that invariable, is my understanding. I think we should wait until tomorrow once we have clearer view. Enough that we can extrapolate distances and figure out how many miles the shores are off between maps. Maybe it only looks too different to be Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense."

"Okay but orgy?" asks Sendhei. "I have been waiting all fucking day for this and I am going to go crazy if I don't get to even suck someone's cock."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You poor thing," Henry says wryly. But he then gets up and closes the distance between himself and Sendhei.

More specifically between his crotch and Sendhei's face. "Open wide."

Permalink Mark Unread

He obeys because he is a very good boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is such a good boy! He will get to play with four cocks at once!

Permalink Mark Unread

Such are the rewards of being patient. Also, Gabe will record this if everyone is okay with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are absolutely all okay with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, the orgy is not entirely a gang bang, but they are focusing on Sendhei quite a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if Sendhei wants it to be a gang bang?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, what is the measure of a gang bang? Does it count if they take turns going at it in Sendhei's hole? What if Henry is fucking Sendhei while Gabe is fucking Henry? What about if they take turns teasing Sendhei dick?

Permalink Mark Unread

He might be a bit too overwhelmed and in subspace to answer that right now please leave a message.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's great that he is enjoying himself that much.

Eventually, they each climax and collapse on top of each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can probably sleep.

...well except for Sendhei who should probably die instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yikes. What a weird way to travel.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not incredibly pleasant, no. He actually wants to try the poison.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, Henry can make him some.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he mind dying over there? In that bit of construction. It's creepy to think that there is a corpse so close...

Permalink Mark Unread

...sure. He can do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas gives him a goodbye kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe gives him a goodbye grope.

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles and goes to die.

Taharqi, meanwhile, goes to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sleep sounds like an excellent idea. Henry wants to get up early to repeat the balloon experiment.

Permalink Mark Unread

And next morning comes soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

In which case, Henry will get up early to start the new balloon. He also checks on the previous one, it should still be sending signals, but maybe not.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is... recognisably Earth, if the Pangaea period of the Earth had happened around 10,000 BC and also had been completely different. The seeds of all the continents are there, but the seeds of the Americas are east rather than west of the seed of Africa, around the world from it.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is very weird, but that's just their life. They save all the relevant information to piece a map later.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then more building?

Permalink Mark Unread

More building!

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe and Henry take turns between building and complementary projects. Gabe in particular is focusing on food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi can teach more of the local magic, too, when appropriate.

Permalink Mark Unread

They would be more than willing to learn! Henry is willing to teach his crystal magic - he warns that it hurts - and how to use their technology. He is currently working on one-and-a-half projects to create better balloon-drones and a network using the same so they have coverage around this base. To later expand to the highlands base.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who cares about pain give Taharqi magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

He appreciates the enthusiasm. He creates a large crystalline spike in his usual jet black. "Hold your arm still while I pierce it... moving or twisting is fixable but not advisable. I will then guide you through the mental exercises required to get you started."

Permalink Mark Unread

Arm: still.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spike: in.

He is not actually being stabbed in the proper sense. The spike is growing inside him and partially absorbing his flesh, and with the pain also comes a new different sensation. "You should be able to feel the spike now. Not the pain it's causing, but the sense of the spike itself. We will focus on that, and get you in the mindset to manipulate the crystal with your mind. We will start by having you pay attention to what it feels like when I manipulate the spike."

And presumably they go about doing that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe his dick twitches a little bit with the pain? Just a little bit.

Who knows.

He will now learn magic!

Permalink Mark Unread

A little from something big is rather noticeable. Henry raises an eyebrow. "Keep focus."

The next stage is to just have Taharqi observe what it feels like when Henry extends and contracts a branch out of the spike. Then managing to do that with his eyes closed. If all goes well, they should get to the part where Taharqi may be able to stop Henry from changing the spike before needing a break.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi is actually getting kind of anxious about not building, he needs his base to be finished.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry agrees with that sort of priority!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good good so after a bit more magic tinkering: base building!

Permalink Mark Unread

Base building, it's coming along nicely, if Thomas can say so himself. At this rate it might take another couple of days.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is so much faster than he had expected he is very happy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww, that is great. Gabe kinda wants to do something to celebrate the occasion. For once, it's not sex, maybe he will cook something.

Permalink Mark Unread

With... what ingredients?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe raises his hand and starts making a vaguely cup-shaped crystal with what might be milk inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crystal magic spends the body's energy reserves, such that making food is not practical unless you do it slowly. Which is why they have been eating his food instead of making their own. Henry will get around to food-making crystals soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh. Well he can at least provide the meat and some berries and nuts and leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe deeply appreciates Taharqi's meat (and other food items).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this a pun? This feels like it's a pun."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eyebrow wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can safely assumed that is the case when Gabe is involved. The translation magic doesn't cover puns? It's weird, it covered 'gravity'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, I got the meaning, what I didn't get was the word. Was that your word for 'meat'?"

He's using his language, so when he says "meat" he is not using the same word Gabe did.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was, yes. Huh... so you get the meaning intended by the speaker? What if one of us makes up a random collection of sounds, but have clear meaning behind it? Or if we repeat a word that we don't know the meaning of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I know as much about this translation magic as you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. We might just test it then." He says two things, one which he thinks is likely a curse word which he doesn't know the meaning of and the second is just two sounds that he is intending to mean 'word'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of those translated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Weird, but I am not complaining about being able to talk to you at all." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Henry might have an idea on how to further test it or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs also.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to building. With magic. And a combination of new and old technology. It shoult turn out to be a very eclectic project.

Permalink Mark Unread

With pauses for food, during which Taharqi continues to instruct them in food magic (and they actually make progress! food magic: possible for the extradimensional people), continues to learn crystal magic, and they sometimes have more sex.

Permalink Mark Unread

The extradimensional people are entirely fine with these developments.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe figures it's hard to experiment with food and not offering that food, so the celebratory cake for when the base is done being built won't be as novel, but still: cake.

Permalink Mark Unread

...........what the FUCK is this he is having an out of body experience

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe is always glad to bring a man to ecstasy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is a food you just... have? In real life????"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. You think people would get better at building stuff and distributing porn and forget about food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not even chocolate cake. Are you going to explode if we flavor something with chocolate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How should I know, I have never had any whatever-that-is!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A food that is a near universal favored among humans." He makes a chocolate tablet, then - thinking better - makes enough to fill his palm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gabe, hold him up just in case."

(Gabe does that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hold on, let him film this. He pulls out his phone with his free hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay he can try some cho...

.......co.......

......late............................

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe prevents him from falling over. "Enjoying yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you do anything other than eat and fuck all day?" he says, a bit breathlessly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Eventually everything gets boring when not done in moderation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I kink on being dominated and Henry is a huge nerd with other interests?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...'kink'. I like this word."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's one of the best words."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It definitely is. I would think you would agree with me. I see how you react during Henry's magic lessons." He pats Taharqi's dick like a beloved puppy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem to enjoy it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this like nudity, where you just shrug and don't find it remarkable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"ā€”maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. I am genuinely not sure if this is our societies being repressed, but whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not whatever, if Taharqi is into pain, it's our moral obligation to provide him with ways to express this preference," he says in a solemn tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi laughs, rolling his eyes. "I do not think it's that common, mind, but I also would not say it is... a specific 'kink,' I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs once more. "The same thing as anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A preference?" He mimics the shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would imply I enjoy pain more than I enjoy other things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair? I am not entirely sure what is going on there that makes your dick react."

This conversation is having a reaction on Thomas.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pain is hot. Receiving it, giving it. Interacting with other people in... the right contexts... is hot. All kinds of interactions can be hot in the right circumstances. And Henry stabbing me with a magic crystal? Definitely hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I could work magic crystals into sex. Practice your pain tolerance and focus discipline."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dick twitch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe pats Taharqi's dick again. "Soon you will get a special treat," he tells the genitals.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a soft meow-like growl and the tiny panther leaps from somewhere, landing on Taharqi's shaved head. Taharqi laughs and grabs the panther from his head (there was a bit of scratching but no blood) and grins at it. It squirms and meows in his hands.

"You seem to be a strong one," he tells the panther. "What should I call you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fluffy, the destroyer." Gabe scritches the kitty.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Destroyer, the fluffy."

Permalink Mark Unread

The panther meows and squirms some more, so Taharqi drops it and it falls on its feet. It glares at Gabe and gives him a huffy meow before turning around and scampering off.

"Midnight," Taharqi says. "I will call him Midnight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like it!" Small solemn clap.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's growing quickly. I half expected him to die, he seemed so sickly and hungry, but he's really filling up, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, that is sad, but I guess that is nature."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe it's the healing food thing? It can't be hurting his chances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not implausible," Taharqi says, nodding. "I am sure Jhebbal Sag would love it if he had died, though," he grumbles, then sighs. "ā€”god of nature, for context," he adds, "and a right asshole as far as I can tell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As someone who technically died at least twice because of nature, I am not surprised."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Technically?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We mentioned the clones thing? Well, before we managed to build a nice and comfortable island paradise at least two sets of us didn't make it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. My... condolences. I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe shrugs. "Thanks. I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pats Gabe on the back. "Are there any good gods in your world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I suppose Mitra is alright? A little bit too into the whole 'righteous crusades' thing but given who the other gods are, I am not even sure I disagree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If everyone else is 'nature god, but thinks kittens should die' levels of bad... yeah."

Anyway, now they have built a nice and sturdy base. What is next?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, next he would go storm the base of the Witch Queen, but if they want to do something he is way ahead of schedule here. Or if they want to come, too, but... they did not uh... look very versed in combat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, excuse Gabe if he was too busy taking care of his beautiful face to learn how to get mauled by panthers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry would like to learn how to defend himself and wants to help with Taharqi's plans. But he doesn't want to be a burden?

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas definitely wants to learn to fight and fight. What sort of opponents are they talking about? He ought to be more capable once he is not caught flatfooted and unarmed in the middle of another world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the main things they'll be facing before getting into the palace proper is gorillas and other large apes. Inside it... who knows. Maybe nothing, maybe something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry doesn't think there is any benefit to going and slowing down their incredible capable immortal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas? How ya feelin' bud?

Permalink Mark Unread

More annoyed than usual at his own mortality. But Thomas thinks he is not dead-weight during combat, and just because Taharqi is immortal it doesn't mean that he can't benefit from someone helping him along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well said. Taharqi can appreciate this.

They will wait until a less-rainy day and then Taharqi will prepare for battle. "Can you ride a horse?" he asks Thomas. "I can bring Skip, too, but if not I'll just bring Lucky and we can both ride her."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good to be appreciated.

"I don't. We don't really use horses. So, both riding Lucky sounds like the best alternative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I really don't think this is a good idea..." Sigh. "Any kind of preparations before you go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will bring some stuff from the main base, potions and bandages and arrows. Other than that, I don't think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, potions! No armor? Are you going to fight all-natural as usual?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could speed up your learning how to use Gabe's shield crystals, but I am not sure how well you could fight using them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am most worried about whatever will be in the palace. I am not sure whether dodging will be better than shielding, but that has tended to be my strategy." To Thomas: "So that probably answers your question. My default attire is," and he fetches it from one of the piles of furs there, "a vest and a leather belt to attach my bow and axe, leather wraps for my hands and feet." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have been enjoying being all comfortable. But I think I will don my clothes for the occasion. Got to look my best for a queen, witch or not. If we have at least a day or two I think I will spending them making myself a nifty weapon and getting used to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can wait a couple of days, sure. I also have a theory about my immortality that I will need to test and it might take a couple of days, too, so I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What theory? I think I will make me a hammer or mace with a stone head. I can use the power of my crystals to manipulate it during combat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want a forged mace instead, or is the stone part important?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The stone part is important, yes. We could try a hybrid design, but I want to be able to manipulate the head and my crystals don't work reliably with metal; they work the best with dirt and sand, but that would be harder to incorporate into a weapon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like it's better to just let you do what you'll do. Anyway, as for the theory, I think the respawn magic is related to how long I have spent somewhere, recently, and there isā€”somethingā€”consumed. It felt sort of depleted last time I respawned here, but if my theory is true it will have recharged, since I have been here for a few days now. And probably the highlands base will feel more depleted since it has been longer since I have been there? And so I will want to spend a couple of days there, recharging.

"Or I could be making things up." He shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds worth checking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does. If it turns out that my antimagic can affect the bracelets that test would be informative. Which reminds me we never got around to doing the test with magic food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now is as good a time as any."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry grows a long crystal spike and pokes a bit of magic'ed food with.

Apparently his anti-magic can suppress the magical effects of food, but not in an explosive way. And the food returns to being magical once it leaves the area of effect.

"This is a good sign for being possible to suppress your bracelet, but a bad sign for me being able to do it, without large quantities of my crystal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you think you would need a lot of crystal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It ought to be strong magic. It can reconstitute your body without any delay we could notice, teleport to your new body, and it has been around for a long time. Which points to being that sort of thing that really resists what my anti-magic does. My crystals have been foiled by an improvised kebab."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I will want some crystals to fight the Witch-Queen then. Oh, what sorts of potions are you going to bring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Healing ones, mostly. I cannot say I am very well-versed in alchemy, I know only the basics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it complicated to learn? I would be willing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think less 'complicated' and more 'dangerous'. It is the kind of thing where you want someone who knows it to teach it to you, because experimenting with it can be rather... explosive."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry has a calculating look for a moment. "Okay, it is probably not safe to suppress a potion and then throw it at a distance to see if it explodes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, but it sounds like a hilarious weapon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well exploding potions in orbs are already a thing that exists."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "How disappointing," he says not sounding disappointed at all. "I wonder if Henry can crystal-replicate them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my idea, yes. It might not be safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are exploding potions, of course it isn't safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant the healing potions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking both."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Anyway. I think I should go die, yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you have so much to live for!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck, send Sendhei our regards."

"Will do. Back in a couple of days. Take care of Midnight."

And with no more ceremony than that he walks off the edge of the platform to his death.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good thing they installed the pit to dispose of the corpses.

They are planning to make the next few days uneventful, the base is complete, but they decorate it some. Thomas spends most of his time experimenting with weapon design. He settles for a mace as long as a baseball bat which he thinks is the best combination between reach and speed. It's studded with a combination of Thomas's and Gabe's crystals, so it can hit and parry attacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry makes Thomas bracers for his arms and legs with all three kinds of crystals, so he can use those for defense. He also suggests that he record a message in case he dies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Always a rain of sunshine, but sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe will just be here, making sure Midnight stays alive and happy. Does Midnight want to play with cat-toys?

Permalink Mark Unread

Midnight is very intrigued by the idea of toys!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Gabe will create several shiny, noisy, and colorful things for Midnight to chase about. Prepare to get enriched kitty!

Permalink Mark Unread

Rawr!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good kitty! Maybe it will enjoy having a cat tree to climb on, full of cozy nooks to hide in?

Permalink Mark Unread

It had already had the full run of the base but the base doesn't have much int he way of nooks. He explores the new arrival with suspicion from a distance but doesn't immediately go in.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is alright, it's not like he can return the thing to a store or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Besides, has he ever met cats? Midnight might well love it. Later. Probably. Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a majestic and mysterious creature. He will go back to decorating the interiors with murals. Or maybe help Henry with his internet project.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so the appropriate number of days later Taharqi emerges from the pink mists around the black obelisk, leading a brown horse. The horse looks a little bit agitated, but seems to trust Taharqi enough to follow his lead.

He leads it to the ruins, specifically the place where they built the vertical elevator, and he rings the little bell there to inform the other three that he's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

They answer the call shortly enough. "Hey, how have you been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alive," he says, shrugging. "This is Lucky. Lucky, these are Thomas, Gabe, Henry, and..." He looks around and spots the panther spying on them from atop the cat's tree. "Midnight. It's been two days, how have you grown this much." He has not grown an unreasonable amount by panther standards. "Midnight, this is Lucky, she is not food."

("Meow.")

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gabe has been spoiling the poor thing." Thomas approaches Lucky.

Permalink Mark Unread

"With gifts and toys."

Permalink Mark Unread

She whinies and huffs, and Taharqi takes Thomas's hand to lead it to Lucky's nostril, palm towards her. He pulls his own hand away so she can sniff Thomas alone, and then he gently leads Thomas's arm so he can pat Lucky's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pats Lucky's neck gently. "What a pretty girl you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can pat her harder," Taharqi instructs, smiling. "They have very strong muscles and thick hide, they can barely feel that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, harder, then. "Just didn't want to spook her." Pat pat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She whinies again and taps the floor with one of her hooves. "She likes you." He steps away from her to go find Midnight. "Midnight, where are you," he singsongs, even though he knows exactly where the panther kitten is. In fact, it's almost like he's purposefully leaving his flank open to the kitten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas keeps an eye on that. Taharqi is just like that 80s barbarian... The Beastmaster.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not know what the 80s are, or who the Beastmaster could be, but he bets he didn't have a cool panther pet.

A cool panther pet that does its tiny growl and pounces, to which Taharqi immediately spins around so he can catch the cat mid-leap. It struggles in his handsā€”and that is actually starting to get meaningful, the panther is growingā€”but he holds firm. "You will need to get way bigger and stronger to catch me," he says, tsking and grinning. "Let me introduce you to Lucky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it safe to let it pounce at you like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think I have much of a choice in the matter," he says, shrugging. "That is how cats play." He starts walking over to the horse, turning the kitten around in his hands so he's facing outwards, and Lucky whinies a bit and stomps on the ground with her forehooves a few times. "Easy, girl. He's safe, at least for now. Here you go." He slowly approaches the horse's face, and the panther squirms some more in his hands but he doesn't let go, and although Lucky initially turns her face out, when Taharqi stops walking just within reach of her she turns to look at him. He gets Midnight close enough that Lucky can smell him (and vice-versa), and when the panther starts vibrating a growl he says, "No. She is part of the family, just like the four of us."

But he doesn't force the interaction to continue any longer; now that they have smelled each other once, he turns around and places Midnight on the ground, and the panther immediately scampers off to hide somewhere high.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas pats Lucky and makes soothing noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I brought a cloth in one of her bags she often sleeps on," he tells the other three as he turns around. "Put it near where Midnight sleeps, or his food, so he can get used to her scent without being too overwhelmed by her presence while we're away. I'm going to bring some of Midnight's bedding's furs with us, too, for the same reason, although horses are less scent-oriented like that than cats are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I can do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you get around to performing the test you wanted or are you planning to do it after dealing with the Witch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't so much a test as an observation when I died, and I think my theory was right. The highlands option felt like it was weaker and here felt stronger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. I wonder if it's a designed property or just a side effect of however your magic works."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Anyway, are we ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am as ready as you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case Taharqi can fetch what passes for "armor" for him: the furs and leather belt plus the handwraps and footwraps. From one of the bags hanging from Lucky he gets something that smells like her for Midnight, and trades it for one of Midnight's own bed furs.

And then he goes to the elevator with Lucky and Thomas and they can go down to the jungle floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is wearing the shirt and pants he was wearing when they were dropped on this world - having a change of clothes was not a priority. Plus his new equipment. The bracers on his legs are under his pants to allow for skin contact, but the ones on his arms are visible. And looking fetching if he can say so himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can definitely say so himself.

Once they are again on the jungle floor, Taharqi does not immediately hop onto Lucky. "The path from here to the city is tricky. Follow me and be careful with your footing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, that is easy enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

So he can lead the way. He steers from what little beaten path there is, since threats are more likely there, and tries to also avoid anywhere where it looks like animals might be nearby. They successfully reach a rather enormous tree that has had a spiralling path carved onto it, probably centuries ago, that leads all the way to a lower plateau of the jungle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Impressive! Thomas will refrain from taking pictures now, but impressive! He follows along; on a whim he tries something... yeah, he can use his own earth manipulation crystals to make his footing more steady.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi doesn't seem to be having any trouble, but then again that would defeat the sexy barbarian aesthetic wouldn't it?

Once they're down he looks around for threats and, finding none, nimbly hops into Lucky's back. He then offers Thomas a hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Thomas takes. Up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hang onto me, tightly," he instructs. "Not great footing even for a fine horse such as Lucky."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight. Thomas gets a firm grip. "Like this? I joke." He then adjust to a proper hold.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi rolls his eyes, grinning. "Alright. Hyah!"

And onwards Lucky goes, not quite at a full-on sprint but a decent trot anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

To adventure! Possibly with killing involved, but they can't all be sex with a jungle barbarian sort of adventures.

Permalink Mark Unread

The barbarian would object that he's a desert barbarian way more than a jungle one but he understands where the misconception might have come from.

They ride for a while, and although it's more eventful than they could hope, even in difficult and unfamiliar terrain Lucky seems able to easily outrun whatever growls in their direction every now and then. The hours stretch long, and Taharqi gets them snacks of magicked dried meat to eat rather than stop for an actual meal, and soon darkness starts falling.

Earlier than he'd hoped; rain clouds have started gathering again, so he calls for a stop and finds somewhere secluded by a short cliff to set up their camp for the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas helps by putting a tarp over their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Taharqi collects leaves and branches and rocks, and some of the furs he brought with on Lucky, and their makeshift camp has a makeshift roof and a makeshift fire. He catches small game for a small meal, and soon the rain starts again. They are protected enough from it to be able to sleep, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Thomas can improve the small meal with some small spices. And does Taharqi want to be the small spoon?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool, he strips off to sleep and spoons Taharqi.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rain exhausts itself overnight, and the morning that greets them is warm and humid. Soon they are once again on their way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, this has been a bit anti-climactic, which is objectively good. He will try to distract himself with architectural plans. Maybe they could add a hot tub to the base.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't take that long to get to the ruins themselves after that; Taharqi's camp location isn't that far from them, relatively speaking.

They find themselves by a set of moss-covered stairs leading down into them. They can spot the weirdly-upright apes milling aimlessly about, as well as the flickering lights of some fires here and there. Taharqi dismounts, there; they should probably be more careful now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, Thomas will dismount quietly and be alert. Are there people near the lights? That is somewhat unexpected.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope, just more apes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, maybe these apes discovered fire. He will just keep watch and follow Taharqi's guidance. With his hammer ready to strike.

Permalink Mark Unread

After verifying that there is no good entrance to the ruins that isn't guarded by the strangely-smart apes, Taharqi decides to find a reasonably secluded spot, hidden by rocks and trees, and tell Lucky to stay there. Then, he quietly gestures for Thomas to follow, and goes for a spot that isn't by default a way in, but that can be climbed down to get to the lower level without being in direct line of sight of any of the apes (that he's seen, anyway).

Permalink Mark Unread

Before Taharqi starts climbing, Thomas touches the wall and grows a crystal hand hold.

Permalink Mark Unread

...can he do this remotely? All the way down? That would be way easier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, he just needs to make the crystal "root" down the wall and grow more hand holds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Useful. So down they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully to somewhere without large primates that will pick a fight?

Permalink Mark Unread

They seem to be endemic to the region so surely they'll get around to fighting eventually, but this specific location is indeed free of primates.

Can he make the crystals go away?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can, actually, since they are all one piece. The rock returns to how it was before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, then they're less likely to be spotted.

He raises a finger to his lips again to remind Thomas to be quiet and starts leading the way further down into the ruins, keeping to the shadows and hidden alleyways of the broken buildings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, sneaky infiltration mission, Thomas can do sneaky. Sneaky-sneak.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ruins are the kind of old that you really only see in fiction: overgrowth and moss covering most of everything, decay that suggests hundreds if not thousands of years of disuse, and the overall structure and carvings on the stone seem something straight out of some Indiana Jones movie. Except instead of the racist tropes of native peoples you gotta insert racist tropes involving the occasional band of apes that walk a little bit too-upright and are a bit too proficient with stone tools and fire for comfort. It's downright uncanny.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is finding himself a bit too busy keeping a low profile, but the part of his brain that detects tropes and story elements is sure noticing the similarities and pattern-matching things. It's a rather creepy situation, yes. He will try to not make it worse. His eyes are open and attentive, ready to dash to cover and avoid being noticed at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is almost an inevitability that one of themā€”it is unclear whoā€”accidentally steps on something that cracks and makes a noise. Taharqi immediately freezes and shrinks into shadow and stillness as much as he can as the nearest group of apes all look up and around, trying to find the source of the noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas follows, or rather, finds another nearby shadow to stay statue-still, his eyes darting between the ground and the group of apes.

Permalink Mark Unread

The apes eventually decide it was nothing and settle back down, but Taharqi still waits a minute before relaxing and motioning for Thomas to keep following.

Onwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards, Thomas follows. Paying more attention to the ground as they move along.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can avoid the attention of the apes, if they're careful enough. They keep walking.

They keep walking.

And... keep walking.

The palace is visible in the distance, but this city is large and grew over a thousand years, and they are not fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being unable to talk during most of the walk is what gets to him the most. He can make water inside his mouth and even uses his power to not tire his legs as much, so those are not concerns.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he do those things for Taharqi as well? Otherwise they'll need to stop to rest soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can create water for Taharqi and even try carry him around with his earth moving a bit. They will still need to stop to rest, just later rather than sooner.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's probably good, then. If Thomas himself does not say he would want to stop, Taharqi will call for it after a while longer and look for somewhere somewhat less inhabited where they can set up a campfire without attracting attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

That they can do. Thomas creates a cover to keep the light from spreading further than necessary and keep the warmth in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not as exciting as you'd expected, I bet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! But beats staying home fretting over when my dashing barbarian will return."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your dashing barbarian," says Taharqi, raising an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? Should I have described you as brave? Courageous? Lustful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi laughs and shakes his head. "We should take shifts sleeping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, you go first. I can keep a look-out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. But before anything, food."

Which is consumed in short order and then: sleep. Taharqi falls unconscious almost immediately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas gives him a good night kiss, and then stands vigilant.

Permalink Mark Unread

The night is as uneventful as the day was, and soon enough Taharqi replaces him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sleep time for Thomas comes easily enough as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the next morning Taharqi feeds them again, puts the fire out, and off they go.

The next couple of days proceed similarly. They do actually manage to avoid confrontations with the suspiciously smart apes altogether, although they come close a couple of times and do have to actively run away once. Still better than having to risk an unnecessary fight and get injured before they even get to their desired prize.

Their desired prize is gotten to, though, soon enough. The palace is as decayed (or not decayed, depending on your point of view on how quickly stuff should decay) as the rest of the ruins of the enormous city, but distinguishable enough by the statues adorning the path into it and the opulence of the decoration.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well!" says Taharqi, "We're here." The environs are suspiciously lacking in apes, although it may perhaps not be that suspicious given how the place feels ominous in a way not strictly explained by just the decoration. "Feeling ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like I always say in situations like this, 'there is no better time to storm the ominous ruined palace like the present'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your life must be pretty interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't say the past few years have been boring," Thomas says mysteriously, "But we can discuss my tragic backstory after we are back at the base."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

So down the stone steps and along the stone bridge flanked by ancient waterworks, towards the stone gates.

"...someone's been here recently," he says, frowning and pointing at spots where the moss does indeed look to have been recently tread-on, all the way to the gate... which is slightly open. "Hm."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas is watching his surroundings and also trying to capture it into memory for his future fortress plan. He observes the spots of moss. "An ape or something else?" he says, taking closer look at the spots. At the slightly open gate. "Well, it sure would be anti-climactic if someone got here before we did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who knows. Let's go, I guess." He pushes the gate openā€”it yields much more easily than one would expect, creaking open fairly quicklyā€”and in he goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas follows, hammer in hand, closing the door behind them.

Permalink Mark Unread

On the other side of the door is a platform raised above more waterworks and a long stairwellup to...

...well. There's lit braziers, and fire up there, it seems. Whoever last entered this place may still be here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Is there a new moon or eclipse or something today and there will be a ritual?" Thomas whispers. "Or are they just expecting visitors?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs and shakes his head, then leads the way up, grabbing his axe and climbing up the stairs slowly and quietly.

No one ambushes them and nothing interesting happens until they get to the top.

A spacious, well-lit chamber, surprisingly not looted clear of its decorations, is what awaits them at the end. The floor is fine marble, the pillars are adorned in gold, and the tall statues are a smooth white stone, but the centerpiece of the room is the raised throne across it from them, upon which sits a woman.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has someone come after all these years?" The woman's voice seems to vibrate through them, a warped sound as if there were two people speaking at the same time. "Approach, approach!" she says, leaning forward on her throne. "Your queen demands it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas gives Taharqi a disbelieving look. And he raises his hammer in case something needs breaking sooner than later. He whispers... "Vampire? Oddly-opaque ghost? Or random that sat on the throne?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speak up, your queen would hear you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi shrugs and takes some more careful steps towards the woman. "Who... are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She slams a hand against the arm of her throne. "You would be expected to know the face of your queen!" she booms in her oddly echoing voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas follows. He props his hammer over his shoulder to come off as relaxed, but this is starting to feel like a cutscene that leads to a boss fight.

"Forgive us, your highness. But we are very new to these lands, and your visage was unknown to us."

All things considered, he is managing quite a nice balance between sarcasm and politeness.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is about to say something but then her gaze is drawn to Taharqi's bracelet. "That bracelet... you are one of the bonded." Her face grows irate. "How?! How did you enter these hallowed grounds? Your masters know this is forbidden! That bracelet marks you as my enemy!"

(She is, herself, if they pay attention to that, sporting a bracelet of her own.)

And as she says that, one of the fifteen-foot-tall statues starts glowing green.

Yep, boss fight indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? There is a law against accessorizing like the queen?"

Boss fight time. He will be proactive and take a swing against the statue's leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hisses in another language, but her own bracelet makes it clear she's saying, "Dagon take you and rot you alive."

The second statue starts glowing green, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

What follows is indeed very reminiscent of a boss fight. The two statues are tough and resilient and hit hard, but they can be damaged, and can be destroyed. While they attack, the various pillars start glowing, too, and shoot laser-like magical beams at them after a second's delay.

Taharqi's mobility strategy seems to be the winning one, here; standing still and taking a hit is possible but Thomas's crystalline, magical defences definitely take a beating from everything. This is some heavy duty magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he is unwilling to experiment with how much damage he can take until dodging is not an option. And it's definitely not something to play with.

Well, maybe he will try goading the statues into the path of the magic lasers or into each other. But his primary focus is incapacitating them: hitting them on their legs, arms, forcing them to run into each other and using his crystal magic to affect the ground beneath their feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

And like every good boss fight, after enough damage the statues are no longer functional. Although unlike boss fights, the statues don't function on a hit point basis, and keep trying to hit them until they are actually physically taken down to pieces.

"You kill my servants!" the queen shrieks. "You will now see what true power is!" Her crown starts glowing gold, and from it extends a mask that covers the upper half of her face. She leaps from her throne and lands in the middle of the chamber, hard enough to leave an actual crater there, and when she swivels in place to face them, she is holding two swords made of light. "You will pay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pocket Ground Sand Powdered Granite! Throw at the Queen's face, as a distraction. He runs towards the Queen, ready to duck for cover because his elemental manipulation range is not that great.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ducking for cover will definitely be necessary; she has two swords.

Permalink Mark Unread

Obviously magical swords on top of that. Well, he is going to use Henry's anti-magic crystals. Only sensible when fighting a Witch-Queen in bikini-armor.

Speaking of which, Thomas aims to hit the Queen's exposed flesh with his hammer by faking a hit that she can easily block... except he magically detaches the hammer's head to hit through momentum.

Now his hammer is a short staff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anti-magic... works. The swords wink out of existence, and she hisses before dodging away from his blows. "Giant-king trickery!" she screeches.

Permalink Mark Unread

But Taharqi uses this moment to land a direct axe blow to her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She screeches again with the hit, but rather than being cut and bleeding, her skin cracks like she herself is made of stone, and golden light leaks from the wound.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now that he is not holding a heavy weapon, he will get closer and personal with her.

"Who are you calling giant? You haven't even seen me without pants, lady." He punctuates this with a leg swipe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite her injury, she jumps away, drops of liquid golden light splattering the floor before vanishing. Once she is far enough from Thomas, she summons her magical blades once more, and goes for Taharqi.

Permalink Mark Unread

He parries, well enough, and pushes her towards Thomas, out of balance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Team work! Thomas likes the idea of keeping her out of balance. And making her swords vanish again. Let's go with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And an uppercut with his axe shatters her left leg to pieces, followed by a blow to the headā€”

Permalink Mark Unread

ā€”and an inhuman scream, loud and shrill enough to make the earth trembleā€”

Permalink Mark Unread

ā€”and an explosion of light, knocking both of them off their feet, at the far walls of the chambers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ouch! "Fuck!" He mutters once he can form words again. He looks around, trying to assess the post-explosion situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

The structure of the chamber itself is mostly intact, save for the cracks on the floor where they fought the colossi and the queen herself, but...

Permalink Mark Unread

...where the queen stood now lies a woman, unconscious. She looks like the queen did, wearing the same face, but her garb is differentā€”she does not wear the crown, and instead is in practical exploration gear.

Next to her body lies a golden mask, a small thin crack running from one eye to one cheek.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Post battle cutscene," Thomas says to himself still a bit dizzy.

Then he stands up and makes his ways towards Taharqi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who also makes his way towards him, so they meet in the middle where the girl's body is. Taharqi lowers to one knee and grabs the mask. "Witch-Queen's," he declares before turning his gaze to the woman. "Going to go out on a limb and say the mask possessed her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good old demonic possession. Better be careful with that," he eyes the mask. "also, we should try waking her up. Or do you think she might dislike how we defeated her alter ego?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think demonic is quite right, for all her sins I'm pretty sure the Witch-Queen was a human." He lowers a hand to the woman's face to see if she's still breathing...

Permalink Mark Unread

...and she immediately grabs his wrist and opens her eyes.

Then she frowns. "What... where... am I...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ancient palace of the witch queen that was possessing you until we came here and beat her up. Hi, I am Thomas. You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...hello. I am Razma of Shem," she says, releasing her grip on Taharqi's wrist and pushing herself upright.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taharqi. Of Kush but that's not a title or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. What brings you to these parts? The lovely architecture? The ancient artifact of evil?" He offers a hand for her to stand up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs and accepts his hand up, only wobbling in place a bit. "The latter. I had... visions... leading me here. I don't know why."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi stands up, too. "And they led you to the mask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To... here. Then the maskā€”it called to me. It's... fuzzy. I don't remember all of it, I wasn't myself. And then I really wasn't myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yikes. Any idea of how long were you under the mask's influence?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...no. Days, at least. I... don't feel hungry, or tired. It sustained me. But it has been a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Do you want to come back with us? Or help to get where you want to be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...who... are you? And why would you help me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas gives an exaggerated shrug.

"I told you my name. And in the absence of internet or television, one needs to find ways to pass the time. Might as well help people."

Permalink Mark Unread

...what.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some exiles are less murderous than others," smiles Taharqi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, and they congregate in Sepermeru. But I've never seen you there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The city of relic hunters is not really to my tastes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And yet here you are, hunting relics."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taharqi spreads his hands and shrugs. "It's not what it looks like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas snorts and takes the chance to pick up his hammer head to start melding back into place with his green-white crystal.

"Just because we hunt a relic or two, it doesn't make you a relic hunter. Or just for that matter, some people have multiple hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Razma's eyes lower to the mask Taharqi got, then back up to his face.

That... is the least valuable relic in this place. And that's what he's going with.

Hm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas grins at her eye roll. And tracks her eyes when she looks at the mask. "Aww, but I was going to take some pictures to register our exploit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...take some what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas very deliberately and slowly fetches his phone in the least threatening way. Then clicks a non-flash picture of her face. He turns the phone around and shows it to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a very interesting device."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't know the half of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know half of it, but it's great." He pats his phone. "I am sure we can make you one if you remain well-behaved and promise not to fall in the clutches of evil artifacts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take your pictures and let's go, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, you are so good to me."

He starts taking pictures; of course, he wants the others to pose as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

...no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, even if some people are not willing to indulge a complete stranger after being possessed by the artifact of unspeakable evil, Thomas and Taharqi can have fun. They take some shots with the battleground behind them, some close-ups of the statues. He gets Taharqi to pose "heroically" at least once, weapon brandished, one foot on the ground, the other stepping on a statue's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

This day is going... weirdly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I think we have enough to show to the guys. Do you have anything pending to do here?" Thomas asks them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Out we go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Out they go on their merry way.

Well, merry filled-with-sneaky-around-apes way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know they are not very hard to kill," says Razma when they are sufficiently sneaked to be able to talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes but they look far too much like people for me to want to do that as a first resort."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...and you care about that. Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He is such a sweetheart. Not slaughtering his way through his problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I take it you're new to the Exiled Lands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I am. Do you have touristic recommendations?"
