"Probably! Sometimes we do have a usual treatment for something, but it's hard to tell if that's the problem – or there's only one Healer who's seen it before and they're on their day off, if it's something rare. Also it can be hard to study illnesses we don't completely understand yet, because it's not safe to just try things at random on people, and mice don't work quite the same way."

:I should definitely be able to help with inventing healing techniques. When I have time, anyway, but just looking at stuff should be pretty quick.:

"That'd be really useful! Maybe next time we have a really difficult-to-diagnose case we can call you and see if you're free to come tell us what the problem is?"

:Check with my droid before you risk waking me up, but sure.:

"She can't hear Mindspeech, right? Is there a quick way to contact her or find out where she is?"

:For now she'll either be at the library or in our rooms, and you won't wake me up knocking if she's there to answer the door.:

"Sure, that works - thank you!"

Vanyel is finished his food, and even with the pain block, he's flagging a bit. But if he heads out, he won't have the calming effect anymore, and it's really nice not to have to put so much effort into dragging his emotions away from the pit-of-everything-is-terrible.

Deskyl pats his knee and keeps working on her own meal. :What kinds of things do you usually deal with?:

Shavri's happy to talk about that at length. The most common are injuries, usually broken bones or bad cuts, sometimes infected – serious enough to be worth trekking out to see a Healer, not so severe that the patient dies before they can reach the House of Healing. When they do get more critical injuries it's usually because someone happened to be nearby when it happened. They see a lot of infections in general, pneumonia and bladder infections as well as wounds. Women with complications after childbirth, and rarely a woman having a complicated labour is able to make it out. The rarer things are the most interesting: some recentish examples include a venomous snakebite, a man stung by at least a hundred wasps at once, and a mysterious ailment that they weren't able to figure out the cause of (but that Deskyl might recognize as probable anaphylactic shock.)

She does, and explains the idea of allergies, which are among the things she can recognize on sight. :And I can help with poisons more easily than most things - I can't heal them without doing my whole thing for that, but I can block them from doing anything while the person's body clears them out itself, if they stay close enough to me.:

"Huh. We can do that sometimes, but way more easily for some kinds of effects than others – if the main effect a poison has is that someone stops breathing, we can deal with that until it clears out of their body, but if it damages their liver then we can't do very much about that at all."

:I get the impression that in general my Force effects work in a more... intent-based way, than your magic does. It's not even that that effect has an idea of what poisons are, I can block any harmful chemical effect. Drug side effects, too, with only a little more effort than just blocking the whole thing.: Nom nom her plate's just about empty. :I'm going to come by and tell you what I know about bacteria - the tiny living things that make wounds fester and things - when I'm recovered enough to take questions, maybe we should plan to go over what I can do that might be relevant to you, too.:

:That sounds good! We know a tiny bit about those but not a lot. Mostly that they are alive even though they're too small to see directly:

:That's a good start! I don't know enough to get you to antibiotics and safe surgery right away but I should be able to get you headed in that direction.: Nom. :And speaking of heading, I should get going.:

Vanyel gets up when she does. "See you later, Shavri."

She gives his hand a squeeze on the way out of the room. :Early night tonight?:

"Probably. I was planning to read something but I'm really tired."

:Yeah, I can tell. Did you sleep through the night okay yesterday?:

"Better than usual. I think yesterday might've just been really exhausting."

:Yeah. Well, it's looking like I'll be ready to heal your aunt and the others in another day or so, maybe you can take a few days off and catch up on things then.:

Vanyel frowns – he isn't totally happy about the idea, he takes way too many days and half-days off already – but he doesn't say anything.

Handsqueeze. :I know, it's not the solution you want. But these are the tools we have.:

:I know: Someday, though, he would really desperately like to be less of a mess.

She moves to hug him around the shoulders. :I wish I could offer you more. But I do think just having more leeway in your day to day will help in the long run, even if it's slow.:
