:That sounds promising. Will it cause any problems if she decides to keep it after all?:

:If it were for another fifty years, perhaps. It would be an unprecedented situation and so I am not sure how anyone would react. I can think on the matter:

:Please do.:

A ponderous nod. :Is there anything else you wished to discuss?:

:Not unless you happen to have an idea of what the kingdom's neighbors will think when they notice.:

:...That is worth considering. And - worth deciding whether you would be willing to consider hiding some of your magical abilities. We are concealing the full extent of Herald Vanyel's power for that reason; it would alarm neighbouring countries, and it might make him a target for anyone considering that they might want to start a war – though the obvious time to do so would be when Elspeth dies:

She nods. :I'm already going to be somewhat of a target, that way, but I'm not very worried about it. It might be a good strategic plan to keep some things in reserve, if there's a chance of a war, but I don't think this is a particularly good candidate for it - it's not going to be obvious right away, for one thing, my healing doesn't make cosmetic changes beyond healing scars and possibly reverting magic-whitened hair to whatever color it would naturally be.:

:I was thinking of your combat magic that you used to help Herald Vanyel in the fight. The Healing, I agree, ought not be much of an issue:

Another nod. :I'm not going to keep all of it secret, but most, definitely. I expect it's more likely I'll be targeted for the engineering - someone will realize that the foreign engineer making machines to lift rocks might be able to make ones to throw them.:

:That is fair. Though, anyone sensible will realize you are much less a single point of failure, there – by the time this becomes obvious to our neighbours, you will surely have already taught a number of others:

Thoughtful pause.

:It could make sense to preempt all of that, and send out some diplomatic invitations to our neighbours, inviting them to send their artificers over to Haven to study your engineering. Particularly if we end up creating a Collegium for it. This would not remove the risk, I do not think, but it would indicate our friendliness:

:I'll mention it to the queen. And talk to... Savil, I suppose, about getting someone with teaching experience working with me.:

A nod of acknowledgement.

:Thank you for your time.:

DZ goes back to the library; at dinnertime, Deskyl checks on Van again.

He's sitting in the dining hall with a curly-haired girl a few years younger than him; he looks pretty exhausted, his thoughts and emotions confirm it, but he's forcing a smile and managing to make the right listening noises at the girl's chatter.

The girl stops. "Oh! You're Deskyl, right? I'm Shavri. I met your droid, she's really neat. She recited me a whole book about medicine in your world."

"Mmhmm." :Was there anything interesting in it?: She takes a seat next to Van.

"There was! I mean, a lot of it was just how people in your world think about bodies and illness or injuries at all – people don't have Healing-Sight, so you have to have other ways to figure out what's wrong, and to treat really urgent things in ways that don't need a Gift. It could be really neat if we could find people who aren't Healers but wish they were, and teach them, so they can be sort of not-Gifted Healers."

:Sounds like an interesting project. I might know a few more things than she does - I haven't studied medicine exactly but my Force senses show me a lot.: And to Van, privately: :Pain block? It'll help with the tiredness.:

:Huh, you can do that? Um, sure, I might as well try:

:I'll want to give you the safety talk later if I'm going to be doing much of it, but yeah.: And then - this effect is more subtle than the calming, which she's also offering; the pain just fades away a bit, without any noticeable magical presence to cooperate with or oppose. And she returns her attention to Shavri.

Vanyel accepts the calming too – he shouldn't get in the habit of needing it, probably, but it's so much easier. He's still tired, it's been a long afternoon, but he can focus on the conversation and even find it genuinely interesting.

"What kinds of things can you see?" Shavri asks Deskyl. "With Healing-Sight we can see lots of what goes on inside bodies, but we need training to tell when it's normal versus it means there's a problem, it's not obvious right away. I mean, sometimes it is, if tissue is dead then there stops being life-energies moving through it and it's pretty evidently bad – or broken bones are hard to miss – but a lot of illnesses are subtler."

:There's not very much I can't see. I don't always know the terminology for what I'm looking at, but I can tell what's happening and whether and how it's harmful for any kind of physical issue. The Force - isn't a person, exactly, as far as I can tell, but it does have opinions about peoples' physical wellbeing, and I get to hear about it, basically.:

"Ooh, so it gives you the interpretation too, basically? That sounds so useful."

:Well, not so useful without being able to do anything about it, which is a little more fraught. But it sounds like it'll come in handy around here sometimes.:
