zoriana goes to purgatory
Permalink

Zoriana is not full of regrets, but mostly because likes where she's going.

Piria had come to temple the other day agitated and looking for Bevaluu, who was out, because she was pretty sure someone was trying to curse the Yondabakari River and working from Ember Lake, and her worthless wizard had turned tail, and could she please get a teleport, oh and also some water breathing, and really it would be useful to have a cleric along Zoriana, it's all right if you're not the best swimmer, just listen to me and I can make you better at it.

Zoriana had sighed and said she'd be willing to go if Alinza or whoever else Piria had talked into this would be willing to haul an exhausted old cleric around if necessary. Piria had rolled her eyes and said she was sure Zoriana was being modest. When they'd met Alinza at the bar she'd just nodded, and the next morning off they went.

It had all been going rather smoothly until they'd run into some ancient runic array that, naturally, activated at them.

Zoriana is somewhere else. Somewhere... very, very else. There is a small stone room with a frosted window that lets in enough light to read by. There's a mat that a very young person with very low standards might consider adequate for sleeping on. There's a pitcher of water. There's a long linen tunic folded in the corner. There's a toilet, a barely-adorned hole in the floor. There's what seems to be a human on the mat who doesn't respond to Zoriana's arrival.

The person on the mat is incredibly injured. Most non-adventurers would not still be breathing. No one has treated any of their wounds, just dragged them here and left them on this mat with not one square centimeter of flesh left unharmed (and some parts entirely missing), and whoever it was didn't clean up the bloody smears or bloody footprints they left, either.

And her party is missing. Important issue, that.

On a normal day, she'd convert a spell to a Cure and heal the person. However, right now she might need any spell she could get her hands on, and thus today she is one of those adventurers who thinks it's worth 15 crowns for a bit of healing.

She'll poke the person with her Wand of Cure Light Wounds and use a charge.

The person blinks a couple of times and then just closes her - it looks like a her, anyway - eyes and stays still. She's much less injured now - still missing pieces, though, and of course still very bloody, and not really anything reasonably described as okay, but definitely much less injured.

An adventurer would have shown less physical reaction to the lowest-circle Cure, but would be more likely to be on her feet by now.

The woman looks Avistani. She'll try Taldane and Varisian and Hallit and Skald and see if she gets a response, and while she's doing that she's going to clean and have a look at the remaining wounds. (Using conjured water, she doesn't trust the pitcher.)

That gets some kind of reaction but it's hard to say if the reaction it gets is positive. It's... strongly valenced in some direction, probably.

It's not very surprising that someone who's been tortured doesn't really want to be touched much, especially while naked. It's still good to make sure a body isn't full of poison, or freed from caltrops but likely to get hurt again as soon as one shifts, or bitten by something contagious.

She doesn't actually see much sign of that, though. She'll wipe the blood and water from the mat, get some bandages on any part of the woman that might still need them, and then put a tunic on her. Not the one in the room, she doesn't trust it and she does have a spare.

(The only magic around aside from Zoriana's is the light, the woman isn't cursed. A Dispel won't help.)

Marie goes very, very limp and does not in any way offer any further reactions once Zoriana starts actually moving her limbs. She doesn't resist at all.

That's concerning but in general people benefit from wearing clothing.

Once the woman is dressed she'll get her back lying down on the mat. (She doesn't, actually, have a bedroll. They're bulky and not much use underwater and Zoriana can sleep in her armor.)

Probably at this point the thing to do is to do her best to jam the door and hope that she can get a Sending done.

And for ten minutes, whoever did this doesn’t return.

It's a tense ten minutes, but she manages to get the spell cast, directing it to the second-circle she left manning the temple. Lake concern unresolved. Runes under lake moved me alone to unknown dungeon. I hope to Teleport out with victims. Piria, Alinza likely lost or retreating.

He's in the middle of counseling someone, but he can take a moment to reply.

Alinza is wounded and appears to retreat. I will alert others regarding Ember Lake. Focus on where you are. Good luck and godspeed.

Marie is still not up for doing things.

Reasonable, given the circumstances.

Zoriana is going to have a look at the door and also the window and the toilet to see if there's any good way to get through any of them, ideally without alerting too many guards. Even just getting a look outside would be useful, and stealing the enemy's continual flame sources or such wouldn't hurt either.

They’re both too small to fit through without turning into something smaller than a human. The window isn’t meant to be opened.

How much isn't it meant to be open? She does have solvents.

For that matter, what's the door like?

The window doesn’t have any affordance to open other than by being broken or disassembled or uninstalled; it’s held in place by new stonework and doesn’t have a slot to slide into. The door is locked; the hinges are on the other side. It’s wooden, and old, and isn’t actually designed to allow access to the lock from this side (it doesn’t even have a handle on this side) but that’s about all; it wasn’t really designed to hold powerful adventurers.

If she were younger she could give the door a few good shoves and then haul the woman along with her if she stayed too out of it to walk. In this world has a saw, so she can probably still get the door, but she doesn't have a cart, and leaving the woman behind a door with a suspicious hole in it might get her in even more trouble than she was in to begin with.

As it stands she'll cover her light and get set up to stab anyone who comes through the door and pray. Hopefully nobody will show up until dawn, or at least until the woman can speak.

She almost naps, sort of, and then startles at nothing visible, sitting up very abruptly. She curls up tight and watches Zoriana intently. She's not going to be the one to break the silence, though.

She'll try talking again. "I'm Zoriana, and I'm not going to hurt you. Can you tell me of this place?". She'll go through all her languages if she can't get a response otherwise.

She can eventually get a kind of choked and half-whispered response in some different language they don't speak in Avistan.

Comprehend Languages, and she'll repeat what she just said and see if that gets the same answer again.

"...French? I hope you speak French."

She'll point to her mouth and frown, then point to her ears and smile, though the smile is a bit forced.

This takes an unreasonably long time to click for Marie.

"...You remember enough to understand and not enough to speak?"

Awkward smile and a handwave.
