It's a pleasant day for travel, and Deka's enjoying it - just enough clouds in the sky to cut the early summer heat, a nice breeze, birds singing in the trees, the clop of her draft goat's hooves on the trail, the twittering of her griffon friends as they flit from tree to tree overhead, keeping pace with her cart. She's excited, too: She's on her way to wizard college, but she's decided to check with any wizards she hears of along the way, as well, to see if she can find an apprenticeship, and the people in the last village she passed suggested she try here, at the arboreal mansion she's surely just a few minutes from being able to glimpse through the trees.
One nods, but also looks, perhaps a little concerned at the idea of someone going to that level of trouble for him. "I- that's- Okay?"
"I'd hate to find out there's something we should have been doing for you and didn't know about. And I'm a cleric of travel, remember, I couldn't be one if I didn't like bouncing around from place to place. It's really no trouble."
"Being a cleric is - it's kind of something we are before we start being it officially; there has to be something that's very important to you, in the right way, where you wouldn't be yourself without it. And then becoming a cleric means you have a god's help to do more of it, and to help other people with it, too. So, any cleric of Fharlanghn, we're never happy staying in one place for long, we always want to be going off and finding new things to see and learn about, and - most of us understand that it isn't as important to other people, but that's still hard to keep in mind, when it's something that feels that vital, and if you do need help with it, you won't have to try hard at all to convince us that it matters - I can't imagine being stuck somewhere like you were and not doing absolutely anything I could to get away, that seems impossible to me."
One listens quietly, nodding when he thinks he needs to. "I- it's hard to- understand being able to just- It's all...too big? I- I was just- There wasn't anywhere else. But-"
"Mmhmm. That's a common problem for people to have, when they've been stuck somewhere for too long. It'll get better, but it's a good idea to take it slowly - that's part of why I want to find someone for you to stay with, that they'll be able to help you try new things and take care of whatever you're not ready for. It'll still be hard, but you'll be all right, just take it one day at a time."
One tucks himself back into a tight ball, nodding slowly. "What if- people like...?" He jerks his head in roughly the right direction for Rogeiros' house.
"Nobody I introduce you to will be like that, and most people won't if they've heard you talk. And - if they are, it's okay to defend yourself. Different places have different rules about that, but basically everywhere you're allowed to stop someone from hurting you or keeping you from leaving, even if you have to hurt them to do it."
"No, but it's not good to keep people prisoner, either. And usually the fact that you're allowed to hurt them means they won't try in the first place, so the rule helps that way, too."
"Mmhmm. And once we figure out where you're going to be, I'll show you who you should talk to if someone's causing problems for you. That's another thing that's different in different places, but almost everywhere that people live will have people whose job it is to solve problems like that - it doesn't work very well for everyone to have to be ready to defend themselves from everyone else, it's much better to have a few people whose job that is, and let the people who are busy farming or weaving or whatever focus on that instead."
"Anyway, I don't think that's very likely to come up, it's just important that you know what to do if it does. The real question you need to be thinking about is what you want to be doing with your time - I know you probably won't have any specific ideas yet, and I can definitely bring you around to some different places to let you see what your choices are, but it'd help to have some idea of what you want, if anything comes to mind at all, even if it's something vague like not wanting to be around too many people or wanting to be able to spend time outside or something."
"...Outside is. Probably good? Liked it...so far? And- I don't- Maybe-" He stops, shaking his head.
"Oh, that's not a problem at all. Do you have an idea of what you want to learn? Magic, or a trade, or an area of scholarship, or something else? It's fine if you don't know yet, I can introduce you to some people who can help you figure it out if you don't."
"Most people specialize at least a little, there's too much out there for one person to learn all of it. I think the college Deka's going to has aptitude testing, though, you can try that, and if you don't want to be a wizard I can introduce you to some scholars and see if anything gets your attention."
