"So is this, what, a big spooky conspiracy secret, why have I not heard about vampires before."

"They seem to maintain the masquerade themselves, yeah - go after people trying to go to the media or something. And I don't think the human groups in the know are mostly interested in spreading the knowledge."

"Good to know.  I will not do interviews."

"That'd be appreciated until we've unraveled more, yeah."

He nods.  "Looks like lunch is wrapping up.  Gotta get to my next class and pretend fuckin' vampires don't exist."

"Sorry."

"No worries.  See you around."

"See you."

Despite her nerves, the rest of the day goes well, and she lets Tag know she needs to talk to the creepy librarian before any power demonstrations - then ducks inside the library and goes looking for Giles.

"Hello again, Miss Uzun."  He peers briefly to see if anyone's with her, then says, "I'm afraid I don't have the autopsies you wanted just yet."

"I figured. I found a demon to talk to - they're at least not all evil. I did confirm a lot of the magic stuff, though, and my superpowers, and that vampires exist, though the demon didn't know much about them. I do still want those autopsies, to be thorough, but... I believe you about supernatural stuff existing, now."

"...Well.  I would not have advised you to go looking for demons to interview just yet, but I'm glad it worked out the way it did.  What sort of demon did you encounter?"

"Sand controller. Didn't know what humans would call them."

"Very nearly indistinguishable from a human, capable of transforming into a volume of sand roughly equal to their true body's volume and controlling nonmagical sand besides?"

"Yeah."

"I believe the English term for such beings is sand demon," he says a touch wryly.  "If they have a less... on-the-nose name for themselves I don't know it.  They are known to sometimes cause trouble, but in my assessment they're no more so likely than any other thinking being."

"She said her people are often aggressive, but it didn't sound like raging chaotic evil, yeah. She had some kind of distant mixed blood, like it made her sand kind of blood-drippy? But she didn't know which demon type that was from."

"That doesn't sound familiar to me either."

"Might be rare? Or just way too vague, I get the feeling there's a lot of blood demons."

"Vague, yes.  Well within the range of what one expects of demons but not more informative than that.  I'd have to devote a minor research project toward searching for previous accounts of half-sand demons and their other parents.  If it is, or becomes, terribly important to your... acquaintance?... we may be able to find the time for it, but for now we should focus on your Slayer education."

"I don't think it's too important for now? My friend's gonna look into more but I guess she'll let me know if she wants help."

"Very well.  Now - if you're prepared to believe me about the existence of vampires and your role in fighting them, it's best to begin your training as soon as possible.  Do you have any other demands on your time this afternoon?"

"I need to go home and let my foster parents know where I'll be if I'm going anywhere. And I had some friend plans. Tomorrow's wide open though."

"I'll trust you to invent an appropriate excuse to stay after tomorrow."

"I mean, catching up on school work?"
