Slayer Naruto is going to befriend ALL the demons!
Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's new to Sunnydale. Like, starts school tomorrow new. New foster family, old friends are gonna be a pain to keep in contact with especially with how bad Nausicaa is at writing...

But new place means new friends, and a new city to explore! Her foster mom'd said something about here being dangerous, but Nausicaa's been a street kid before, and is decently confident in her ability to handle herself. Plus, she won't stay out past sundown.

...Or that's her intention, anyways.

It's getting properly dark when she acknowledges she just might be slightly lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fairly lost, yes.  Perhaps even very lost.  Surely not extremely lost?

Does this extremely spooky alley look familiar?  Maybe it was less spooky during the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spooky alleys, great.

She'll squint at it. Did she go down that earlier...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she did.

- Perhaps someone is getting attacked down it.  Perhaps that's a reason to find a different way home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Or it's a reason to charge into a spooky dark alley, shouting, "Hey! You!" and fumbling for her flashlight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Two for one!" the attacker laughs, with a vicious joviality that puts the lie to the furious snarl contorting his face.  He drags the woman along by her throat as he stalks toward Nausicaa.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hello asshole prepare to be punched in the face.

"People aren't your amusements!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks shocked that Nausicaa actually managed to hit him.  At least, that's probably what that expression is supposed to be.  He's still snarling.  (Did his face actually get stuck like that?)

He tosses the woman aside and - growls, and swipes at Nausicaa's face, like a wild predator wearing the shape of a human.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll dodge, punch him in the stomach. "Mugging people or whatever you're doing is not! How! To! Do! Things!" as she continues punching him. She doesn't have formal training but she is very used to fighting people bigger than her.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries to counter, but he moves like he's expecting her to be weaker.  (Come to think of it, she is managing to hit him awfully hard.  She's strong, but does she remember being this strong?)

But after a moment - it's like he's caught on to something, somehow, he's faster and more vicious and that much more strategic.

He gets out of melee and backs away.  (Does she remember being this scary?)

Permalink Mark Unread

She's definitely terrified muggers before. She's figuring he just wasn't expecting anyone to fight back.

"Come after people again, and I will find you," she snarls, even though she totally can't, and advances menacingly on him. "Why do you think some bullshit like this is a good idea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks as blank as a person can look with their teeth bared like that (maybe something's actually wrong with his face).

" - You're letting me go?"

He doesn't even seem cowed, or apologetic, just genuinely baffled.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want I can do a citizen's arrest," she says, a bit lightly. "Don't much like cops, though. Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently whatever's confusing him so much isn't interesting enough to entice him to stick around: he bolts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh.

She goes to find and check on the woman he'd had. Is she still around?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's curled up on the ground, trembling violently.  (Perhaps "girl" is more appropriate; up close, she barely looks older than Nausicaa.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," Nausicaa says, gently. "I drove him off. Are you hurt anywhere?"

Crap where was the nearest phone, what if she has to call 911 she hates involving authorities...

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's gone?  I - I don't think - "

Breathe.

"I think I'm okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have somewhere to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I just need to get home - I shouldn't have tried to walk home - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll walk you there. Safety in numbers, and all that." And maybe they'll have a phone she can call her foster parents from...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you?  Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Assholes like that... Sticking together's good. They're too cowardly to go after groups." Mostly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, stands.

"...You don't know where I live," she says after a moment, laughing feebly.  "It's..." she gestures the way, but hesitates to start walking until Nausicaa does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll walk beside you, how about?" She'll take Kaylee's hand if the indicators are good, and give her a little comforting squeeze. "Come on, let's get you home."

And walk?

Permalink Mark Unread

She startles, but smiles.  "...I'm Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Nausicaa Uzun. Just moved here today, actually... But it's really nice to meet you, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nausicaa, that's pretty.  Nice to meet you too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" She hums, searching for a topic to distract Kaylee with. "Oh, hey, do you go to Sunnydale High? I'm starting there tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do," she says distantly.  (She's not shaking any more, but she's still very - subdued.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Companionable shoulder-bump. "We can head home together after school for a bit, if you'd like? I always get the jitters when shit goes down myself..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd... be really nice.  Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem. Maybe you can show me around a bit, help me keep from getting lost..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing.  Least I could do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you don't have to?" Nausicaa says, shrugging. "Still, wouldn't mind getting to know someone..." She laughs a bit awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'd be happy to.  You seem really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

She'll let the conversation lapse a bit while she casts about for a new topic. She's - not sure, Kaylee seems to be doing good with avoiding it, but maybe she wants to talk about it, but Nausicaa's a total stranger...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's quiet, for a few moments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He tried to bite me."

Permalink Mark Unread

...What the hell, maybe she should've punched him in the balls and - okay involving cops in that's bad, maybe kicked him a bunch of times. Unclear from context if this's a 'sex pervert' thing or like that 'monsters in the night' thing she's heard rumors of in homeless communities though...

Still, kicking probably wouldn't have been uncalled for.

She makes a face. "I'm punching him a lot harder if I see him again, that's for sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't lived in Sunnydale long but - you hear about, in this town - I don't even know what - "

" - I think he might have killed me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't let anyone hurt you."

She'll have to research crimes in this town. Doesn't hurt to know what's going on.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks a bit shocked.  " - We just met, you don't have to..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have to. I will, though. People should be protected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, you're - really really great, Nausicaa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. More people should - you know. Help people. Though." She laughs a bit awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well.  You do, and that's pretty great.  Maybe if you keep it up you'll set a better example."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd hope so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll keep up some light, distracting chatter as they walk back to Kaylee's house.

When they get there, she'll see Kaylee to the door, then hover awkwardly, unsure about what's polite here.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a few moments of explanations and embraces where Nausicaa seems forgotten.  But while Kaylee's hugging her dad, her mother addresses Nausicaa warmly:

"Well, thank you very much for rescuing our daughter.  I assume you'll need a ride home?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Or a chance to call my foster parents... Should probably let them know I'm safe, either way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be happy to convey you," Kaylee's mom says, "but if you'd rather call them, that's fine, you can use our phone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that's between you guys? But yeah, thanks!" And she'll come in and head for the phone?

Permalink Mark Unread

Phone is easy to find.

Permalink Mark Unread

She calls home - talks to her foster dad for a bit - he's concerned and a bit exasperated, he'll come over and pick her up, but it might be fifteen minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

When Nausicaa gets off the phone, Kaylee and her family are having a discussion about filing a police report.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll leave them to it, hovering near-ish the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee seems reluctant, or perhaps just worn out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll talk about it tomorrow," her mother says eventually.  Then, to Nausicaa: "Why don't you sit down, until your foster parents get here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Thanks. He'll be here in about ten, fifteenish minutes? I guess depending on stoplights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This sounds like a night for some hot cocoa," Kaylee's mom says gently.

"I'll get some started," her dad says.  "Nausicaa, do you want any?  There's plenty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's no trouble, yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No trouble at all."  Cocoa: is prepared.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll check on how Kaylee's holding up, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quiet.  Subdued.  But not looking liable to go completely to pieces any time soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

She musters a smile at Nausicaa when she notices her checking in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, uh, school tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, see you then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoulder bump okay?

"Thanks for letting me use your phone. And the hot chocolate," she directs, kind of to the room in general.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoulder bump good, looks like.

"It was no trouble," her dad says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still." She smiles. "It was a big help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad we could help," her mom says warmly.  "Our doors are always open to a friend of the family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks."

She'll keep up light chatter until her foster dad gets there. He thanks the family profusely, and when they're in the car sighs, says Nausicaa shouldn't have stayed out so late or gotten in a fight but rescuing that girl was a good thing... Still, don't do it again.

Nausicaa, of course, mostly ignores him.

She's bright eyed when she gets to school the next day, practically bouncing with excitement. She's already kind of made a new friend! Before her first day! The rest of this should go great!

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves when she spots her.  (She looks like a good night's sleep has done her some good.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa will deftly work her way over through the student crowd!

"Hey Kaylee!" she says, brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Nausicaa.  Good to see you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! I gotta swing by the principle's office to get my schedule, but wanted to say hi!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!" she says.  "Still need someone to show you around after you pick up your schedule?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't hurt. Most schools are pretty bad at the whole orientation thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can show you to the principal's office too if you want, it's just this way - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" And she'll follow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Principal Flutie gives Nausicaa her schedule, assures her that Sunnydale High is an enriching and positive environment for students of all backgrounds no matter how checkered their past, not that being a foster child necessarily means she has a checkered past, just that it's important for children to have a space where they feel safe and welcomed, so please feel safe and welcomed here at Sunnydale High.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, great, one of those. Still, better than unfriendly.

Fortunately for Nausicaa and her checkered past, she already feels very welcome. She's sure she'll make a lot of friends!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, off to class!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He, uh, means well," Kaylee says as they depart.  "Kind of, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I figured. And I've gotten unfriendlier welcome wagons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of the kids are less, uh, tactless than he is, at least.  What's your first subject?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Schedules can be compared! Nausicaa's only advanced class is Spanish, and her electives are art and drama.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's on the AP track, so they don't have a lot of classes together, but she goes over the map of Sunnydale High with Nausicaa and shows her to her first class.

They meet again in the lunch line.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! How's the day been going?" Nausicaa asks, bouncing a bit. She's hungry!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty good!  What about you?  Meet anyone cool?"

The food is - well, high school cafeteria food, but it's not the worst thing ever!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't had much chance to talk in class yet. I'm holding out my hopes for the afternoon, though!"

It's not a health code violation so, hey, she'll take what she can get.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can introduce you to Tag, he's the Sunnydale High resident lovable grump."  This way!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds great!" She'll follow along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag turns out to be a few years ahead of them, with fluffy hair and an amount of beard that's probably a bit of a talking point if you're still in high school.  "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! I'm Nausicaa Uzun! I'm new here! It's nice to meet you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too," he says.  "Have you gotten the 'this is a weird-ass town, don't go out after dark' talk yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

" - oh, shit, what did I say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Punched some asshole yesterday who was harassing Kaylee. 's how we met."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah shit.  Sorry, Kay.  Are you all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Yeah.  Just - I knew it was stupid to walk home alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just mad at myself I didn't hit the guy harder... Anyways, stuff like that common 'round here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than you'd think for a town this small.  Gangs, creeps.  Barbecue forks, for some fuckin' reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty used to gangs and creeps. Barbecue forks? Uh, knew a guy who got dead that way back in New York, guess it might be a gang sign thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs.  "Could be.  I try to stay away from shit like that honestly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of gangs aren't very good at leaving people out of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well.  Fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is recruitment a problem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I'd've heard about it honestly.  - There was a weird story a couple years ago.  Good kid did a total 180, spent a few months as a douchebag, then dropped off the map at the same time another kid died.  These guys were seniors when I was a freshman, I didn't know them, but everyone was talking about it.  The obvious rumors.  Sunnydale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound weird. Though - I don't know. Gangs that're in high schools tend to recruit pretty openly..."

"What're the obvious rumors?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just that the previously good kid killed the other kid.  I think some people were talking about gang recruitment there.  This is, uh, really fuckin' morbid by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry. So... Other topics? Sunnydale have any neat attractions I should see?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We got a zoo, a museum, we're pretty near the beach.  Some forest trails, my mom likes to go hiking sometimes.  What do you like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hiking sounds fun! And I love zoos, and the beach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, the Sunnydale zoo's great, you should definitely see it some time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you can take me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!  That sounds fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is that a blush?  It's blush-adjacent.  "Looking forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeeee blushing cute girls are the best.

"Any arcades or anything 'round here?" she'll ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thiiink so?  I've never been to an arcade before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like them! Classic date location for a reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll check one out sometime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully they'll have some good games... I like the classics just fine, but new stuff's good, too. Assuming there's even any..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could look into it, after we go to the zoo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

Lunch wraps up soon after.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nausicaa's off to classes!

After school, she's somewhat torn between leaving with Kaylee - she did promise to help keep an eye on her - and going by the library to pick up a copy of the textbook. Friends, or studying...

Permalink Mark Unread

She catches her hesitating.  "Did you forget something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to get my copy of the textbook. Which means library. Buuuuut I kind of don't want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I mean, if you're still worried about me, I'll be okay.  It's still daylight.  Or I could come with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Up to you? Don't want to delay you from anything, but I'd like the company."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble, I stay after a lot anyway.  I'm in a lot of clubs.  Do you know where the library is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, thanks."

"And nope! I figured it's not that big a school though, and it's probably on the map..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Prrrobably.  I could just show you though.  It's this way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" And she'll follow Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next Slayer is supposed to come to Sunnydale.  Come to Sunnydale, around the time she's called - it won't be someone who's lived here her whole life.  This is around the time when the prophecies, at least the ones the Council has access to, start becoming truly strange, but that much seems clear.

And lo, there's a new student.

Still, coincidences like this have ever happened before.  It wouldn't do to reveal all the secrets just yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a knock, and the door creaks open.  "Mister Giles?  We need to pick up a textbook."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, yes, come in, Kaylee."

Blink.

"And you must be Nausicaa."  That was easy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Nausicaa Uzun. Guess you don't get too many new students here? Principle told me I could get my textbooks from you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, right this way."  He leads her into the stacks, such as they are in a high school library.

"So, how are you finding Sunnydale, Miss Uzun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People are friendly unless they're di- uh, jerks? Apparently gangs here are kind of weird?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One does hear strange rumors," he agrees.  "I find it best to stay indoors after sunset whenever possible.  I hope you've been safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Punched a mugger last night? So, safe enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We may have somewhat different definitions - ah, a mugger, you say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Got lost taking a walk, ran into some guy attacking Kaylee, punched him until he ran off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good lord.  Is she all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. I think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would just hate to think that something happened to her.  Bright girl, you know, studious, popular... I hope you were able to identify this person to the police?"  By his prominent canines and deformed brow ridge, perhaps, if the fates would like to make this very easy for him...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, Kaylee's family were talking about maybe making a report, but no one's talked to me yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Do you often - I'm sorry, am I being terribly intrusive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles briefly.  "Do you often find yourself, ah, winning fights with adults?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm kind of scrappy, so, yeah pretty much? Knew how to throw a punch even as a kid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a new talent, then?" he says, a little somber.  "I'm sorry to hear it's one you've needed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, life." She shrugs. "Know anything about what's up with the gangs here? I keep hearing about barbecue forks, and that asshole'd tried to bite Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - tried to bite her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. No idea what was up with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds, ah, quite unsettling.  And you say you frightened this person off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Punched him a couple times, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Was his... face... at all unusual?"

(This is what subtlety looks like, right?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I mean he looked like the sort of person old ladies point to and say 'if you keep frowning your face will get stuck like that'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

 - he suppresses a snort.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, ah, apologize.  - Would you like to come by after school again tomorrow?  I can help you get caught up, perhaps recommend some self-defense programs you could take advantage of."

(Lord, that really is exactly what vampires look like, isn't it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure? New school's always confusing, and I've never actually managed a formal self defense thing, might be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very good.  Well, this, I believe, is the last of your textbooks.  I'll see you tomorrow, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

And off to find Kaylee?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's easily findable, skimming a dusty anatomy textbook waiting for Nausicaa.  "Hey!  Get everything you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! And he offered to meet with me after school tomorrow, help me get caught up, and point me at some out of school stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's a nice guy.  Bye Mr. Giles!" she calls as they depart.

Permalink Mark Unread

(He permits himself a very English chuckle after the library empties.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nausicaa will head home, and this time keep herself to a fairly short walk unlikely to get her lost, right in the area around her house.

Permalink Mark Unread

She dreams, that night:

She is sitting at a table, across from a dining partner.  She cannot see their face.  It is not, exactly, in shadow - rather, in the manner of dreams, her field of vision does not seem to extend to that location in the way that it should.  She can see the table, though, candle-lit, and the checkerboard tablecloth, and the empty plate, and the glass of red wine in front of her.

"Take a drink," her dining partner says.  But she does not want to drink.  The wine is delicious, she is assured, rich and heady, but she does not want to drink.  She is thirsty, and what did she come to dinner for if she was not going to partake - but she does not want to drink.

Her companion will become stern - not angry, but merely rather impatient with her recalcitrance.  They have offered her this gift out of the goodness of their heart, to quench her thirst.  She is being so very stubborn.  But she does not want to drink -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't even like wine," she's muttering as she wakes.

Ugh. Social pressure dreams. No fun.

She puts it out of her mind, and heads to school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is chipper as ever.  At the end of the day:

"You were going to see Giles after school today, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that was the plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got Creative Writing Club today, but I can join you afterward if you want, if you're still here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be great, thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem!  See ya!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

And she's off to the library.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nausicaa," Giles says when she arrives.  "Come in, sit down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Uh, what should I call you by the way? Mr G, G-man..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Giles will do fine, Miss Uzun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing G-man," she says, voice teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He rubs his forehead, a bit theatrically.  "I think this is the beginning of a very tiresome friendship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Acknowledging we're friends already puts you a few steps ahead of some people I've befriended, honestly."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Only briefly, though.  "Miss Uzun, I'm afraid I have some rather - unjust news for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh? What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a matter of some discretion.  Can you be discreet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He emerges from behind the library counter, holding a very large, very visibly old book - the sort of book to which "book" does not do justice.  It is a tome, a grimoire, printed, she can see, with the word VAMPYR in ornate bas-relief script.  He flips through it expertly; he's clearly read and referenced it many times before.

"The man who attacked your friend Kaylee," he says quietly, placing the book on the table, facing toward Nausicaa, "looked like this, didn't he?"

The page shows a sketch of a distorted human face.  It is not the same face as the man who attacked Kaylee, but it is, quite obviously, the same distortion.  The wrinkled, rough, contorted brow, the lips bared and pulled back, the teeth sharp and the canines overgrown; a caricature of a predatory snarl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You really want me to believe vampires exist?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry to say I want you to believe a good deal more than that.  You said you've been strong enough to win fights with adults all your life, but I think you're shortly going to find yourself stronger.  Faster, more athletic, more durable, more graceful.  You may develop a supernatural intuition for who is and is not a vampire - they don't always look," he taps the page, "like this.  You - have probably already had a great deal more nightmares than usual, and will continue to do so.  If I'm right about you, Miss Uzun, you're something called the Vampire Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're screwing with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've already heard that the gangs in Sunnydale are enamored of barbecue forks?"  He taps two fingers against his jugular vein, about an inch apart.  "Fangs.  I can secure access to several coroners' reports that will show people with parallel puncture wounds in their necks and drained of blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. You know what, that'd probably be best." She shakes her head. "Look, I'll hear you out okay? It's not like I haven't heard weird shit before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It may take several days to obtain the autopsy reports.  I'll proceed with the essentials today as though I have already produced it, and we can talk again once I have photographs, if that is agreeable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine." She crosses her arms a bit defensively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"First of all," he says, "the reason it's a matter of discretion, and part of the reason it is unjust, is that people who attempt to go public with this information have a way of winding up dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." She pauses, clearly a bit thrown off. "Any - specific reasons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, very often, apparently vampire assassination.  They don't coordinate very much, but they and other supernatural beings are oddly skilled at coordinating about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do vampires - do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stalk the night, kill people for their blood, occasionally sire new vampires.  ...I don't know that they have hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they intelligent? The one I - apparently - fought was talking..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might say they assume the intelligence of the human whose body they inhabit.  And their memories, and some aspects of their personality.  Not any of the, ah, redeeming aspects.  None of them have any qualms about killing and maiming and - tormenting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But they can be talked to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you mean, are they capable of speech - yes.  If you mean, can they be reasoned with..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has anyone tried?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I imagine many of their victims have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. 'Course, lots of people won't reason with someone weaker than them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I can't advise that you - proselytize to vampires.  I don't believe they will be at all receptive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't let them hurt people. But I think I should try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Effort spent attempting to reason with vampires is effort not spent exterminating them," Giles says, rather severely.  "Vampires are not capable of reason or empathy.  But they are extraordinarily capable of appearing reasonable, or empathetic, or put-upon by an uncaring world.  It is one of their primary strategies, and attempts to reason with them play into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I have no one's word for that but yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a great deal of literature on the behavior of vampires that you are welcome to peruse," Giles says.  "But at this stage in your education you should be learning how to defend yourself against them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't object to self defense. But there's some stuff I'll wanna learn for myself. I'm not just gonna be a good little girl and do everything you tell me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see that.  But you are welcome to verify the things I have told you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes.  You should know the strengths and weaknesses of vampires, and your own abilities as a Slayer.  I've mentioned some things - you will be stronger, faster, more athletic and acrobatic.  Some of your dreams will probably be prophetic, although these can be difficult to identify and interpret.  Some Slayers develop a sense of who is and is not a vampire, but it can be difficult to distinguish this from ordinary fallible human intuition, and you should not attack someone based on it until you are already very sure of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any other benefits? How much stronger?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In addition to being harder to injure, you will heal more quickly and cleanly than an ordinary human.  Broken bones will cooperate with being set and knit completely within days; bruises will fade in hours; shallow cuts may heal in minutes or even seconds.  Measuring a Slayer's strength is tricky; Slayers have been known to break down wooden doors with relative ease and throw people across rooms, but not, for example, lift cars above their heads."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I'm unlikely to have any Superman world of tissue paper problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you will want to be extremely cautious if you find yourself in a schoolyard scuffle, but I would advise against that sort of thing in any case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try. Most people are pretty friendly once they talk to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish you all the luck in the world," he says sincerely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. So. Information?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes.  Vampires.  There are other sorts of supernatural creature but you are far more likely to wind up in a fight with a vampire over the next few days than anything else.  The weakest vampire is, I think, stronger than the strongest human, and if not it's a close thing - but so are you.  Vampires heal more slowly than you but are less inhibited by injuries they do sustain, with a few exceptions.  They don't age, and outside of a few particular methods it is impossible to kill them outright.  However: they burn to death much more quickly than humans.  They tend to catch fire in the sunlight, although in all likelihood you will almost never be able to take advantage of this fact.  Holy water and crosses both burn their flesh painfully but do not set them outright aflame.  They do not have reflections in mirrors and so cannot be seen through some old-fashioned cameras, but will appear in photographs.  They cannot enter inhabited houses without an invitation from one of the house's inhabitants.  Beheading a vampire will cause it to die if you can manage it, but the surest method is to drive a wooden stake or spike through its heart.  You will know that a vampire is well and truly dead when it shrieks hollowly and explodes into gray-black ash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Typical tactics? Am I likely to run into a bunch of vampire snipers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't say there has never been a vampire who knew how to use a sniper rifle, but it's not a common skill.  They usually prefer relying on their own strength and speed rather than using modern weaponry, particularly if you encounter them on the hunt - they can weather a bullet from a handgun and so have no reason to be able to shoot first.  An unarmed vampire is primarily dangerous in melee range; the prudent Slayer will become skilled with a crossbow, although I don't suggest trying to carry one on campus.  Which reminds me..."

He returns to the library desk and rummages in one of the drawers, retrieving a long, thick wooden needle attached to a perpendicular handle.  "This is a weapon designed by the Watcher's council, the organization I work for that trains and supervises Slayers.  It's based on the Robbins-Dudley punch knife, and is ideal for killing vampires.  I have a number of them, should this one become damaged.  It would not be - wholly imprudent to keep it on your person at all times, but bear in mind that it is illegal to have such a weapon on a high school campus, and I will not be able to protect you if you're caught with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll take it, but - "I'm not killing anyone. At least not unless I've confirmed they're a threat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any vampire you're likely to encounter in the next several days will likely confirm itself a threat very swiftly," he says a bit sharply.

He sighs.

"I apologize, Miss Uzun.  I do understand your perspective.  But vampires are frequently much better liars than - than the humans they usurp," he says, "and I worry they will use your skepticism against you.  If you want to do independent research, to confirm what I've told you - I will help you to whatever extent I can.  But it is likely to be very difficult."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I get that. But humans are plenty good liars as it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most humans have less reason to lie - but I do take your point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People lie to themselves, too - but yeah." She shakes her head. "Anything other than vampires out there? And who're these guys you're working with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"After vampires, you are most likely to encounter werewolves or ghosts.  Werewolves are more or less what they sound like.  They transform into lupine monsters during the night of the full moon each month, in which form they have no control over their actions and regard ordinary humans as prey.  Werewolves in human form are no more evil than ordinary humans.  It is possible but inadvisable for werewolves to learn to call on the strengths of their wolf form outside of the full moon - doing so will warp their personality to be more amoral and predatory.  Some - subcultures - of werewolves exist that encourage this behavior.  But you cannot infer someone's membership in such a society merely by observing they have the condition."

"Ghosts are - approximately - disembodied human souls.  They vary more in their abilities and nature than either vampires or werewolves, but typically they are tied to the location of their death, and sometimes its circumstance.  They often have... what might charitably be termed as supernatural anger management issues which drive them to hurt or kill the people they come into contact with.  Some ghosts can be freed by resolving some, as the saying goes, unfinished business, but this is not always possible.  The other option is exorcism, a complex magical ritual that is typically unpleasant for all parties."

"Beyond this, there are demons, who come in too many species to list, but are not found on Earth anywhere near as frequently."

He pauses for questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are demons supposed to all be evil, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some species are more reliably malicious than humans; some subset of those are comparable to vampires.  My understanding is that the ones who aren't typically spend even less time in this dimension than the already-rare malicious demons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does anyone know why some're malicious like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they do, they have not informed the Watcher's Council."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much do you guys actually do - I don't know, diplomacy? Demonic sociology?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Traditionally, the Vampire Slayer specializes in - well, vampires.  The primary purpose of the Watcher's Council is to find and train Slayers and potential Slayers, and accumulate information about entities which are hostile to or otherwise pose a threat to humanity, particularly those best solved by the application of a teenage girl with supernatural strength.  Which is to say, very little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty sure 'talking to people' is usually ranked up there on strategies for getting them to not do stuff." She shakes her head. " - Look, if you guys have been - doing whatever - and the world's still trying to end... It sounds like you guys aren't big on the diplomacy thing. Throwing super punches at things can only do so much, you know? Maybe my thing will be getting, I don't know, supernatural embassies established. Get some of the threats helping resolve themselves more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I won't say that the Watcher's Council has done everything right," he says.  "We have made a great many mistakes.  And I won't say that reaching out to nonhostile demon species, or even some hostile ones, is necessarily a bad idea.  But I'm not sure either of us are the best people to do so.  Often the intervention of the Slayer and the Watcher's Council is the reason that the world is merely trying to end instead of already ended.  Being the Slayer... it isn't a position I would put someone in if I had any choice.  But it is extraordinarily important work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does a superpowered teenager in a single part of the world - change anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd be surprised.  The presence of a Slayer anywhere in the world, taking actions visible to the supernatural community, has a quelling effect on the activity of vampires worldwide.  And Sunnydale isn't just any town.  We live on something called a Hellmouth - a confluence of mystical energies which attracts a great deal more supernatural activity than anywhere else in the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will admit that it is - something of a point of contention among the Watcher's Council - whether it is worth the expense to convey the Slayer to multiple such parts of the world," he says a bit wryly.  "But even if we did, it would likely be for more of the same kind of work - finding and defeating vampires and other evildoers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the Hellmouth means - apocalypses are more likely here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are many problems it will be important for you to solve that aren't apocalypses, but yes, all of them will be more common on a Hellmouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So embassies and apocalypse solving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I continue to insist that our comparative advantage may not be in extending olive branches, but we may be getting ahead of ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. But my comparative advantage might be in wanting to extend olive branches, and being strong enough they'll listen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will keep an eye out for opportunities," he says.  "But - I will be keeping an eye out for many things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of eyes to keep open."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed," Giles says.  "Well, I think we've covered most of the basics.  I should say that I elided over a number of, let us say, miscellanea, in my list of the most likely supernatural threats, but we'll be able to go into more detail in future meetings, after I've produced some corroboration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Any other tools I can use, other than just pointy sticks and my charming personality? Is magic a thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be able to provide you with a crossbow as well, but there are limits to what I can countenance bringing onto school grounds.  Magic is real and usable by humans, but - this is very rarely advisable.  Any but the most cautious and conservative use tends to have physical and psychological repercussions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like what? - And I know not to carry knives around at school, you guys don't have scanners but I'm not dumb."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I apologize."

"The use and study of magic is a complex field, but in short - even the most benign varieties have a tendency to cause addiction and chronic illness if used frequently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So not something to mess with, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any other dire warnings for the day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not today, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to actually help me get caught up with school work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - ah, yes, that is probably wise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. So, school!"

Permalink Mark Unread

School!  Giles puts VAMPYR away and sets to work catching Nausicaa up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not a very attentive or clever student but she does try.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is ultimately all one can ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's outside the library just as Nausicaa's finishing up.  "Hey!  How'd it go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good! I got caught up a good bit." Right here's probably not the best place to tell Kaylee about vampires. Maybe at one of their houses?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!  You ready to head home?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Okay if I stay at your place a bit? Not expected back at my place until dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!  My folks really meant the doors-always-open thing.  And I'd love to have you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Onwards to Kaylee's?

Permalink Mark Unread

Onward!

Kaylee's parents are delighted to see Nausicaa again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's happy to see them, though she seems vaguely worried about something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay?" Kaylee asks quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," Nausicaa says. "Got some stuff to work out - might wanna talk about some of it? I'm fine spending a bit goofing off right now though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can talk, if you want.  - or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do want to talk? I'm just - not in a rush and don't want to be a mood dampener? Though I don't know, maybe getting it out of the way's good..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's your thing, it's your call."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. Wouldn't mind going ahead and talking..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Head to my room?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works, yeah. Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads Nausicaa up to her room.  It’s robin’s-egg blue, with a cello in one corner and a bean bag draped in blankets nestled up beside the bookshelf.

”Make yourself at home,” she smiles, sitting down on her bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bean bag! Nausicaa will flop. "You play the violin?" Nausicaa asks, who has never bothered looking up the differences between instruments.

(Who's stalling? Not her! Okay maybe her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“Cello,” she says. “Violins are the little ones, cellos are the big ones, the really big one is a bass. And then violas are like violins but different.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"All Greek to me," she says, laughing a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "I spent a looooong time getting violins and violas mixed up.  So, what's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. So. You know that dude who attacked you like two days ago? Giles claims he was a vampire, and that there's proof - the barbecue fork death thing is more vampires. He's going to get me coroner's reports or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - a vampire?  Mr. Giles the librarian?  Told you that vampires are - secretly real?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. He seemed pretty convinced. And it wasn't just - oh hey vampires - there was this whole thing around it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A whole thing like...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Demons, and a Watcher's Council, and explanations for why no one's told, and a book, and a - thing for why he was talking to me, he claimed I was some kind of mystically empowered person? Who needs to fight vampires."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thats - incredibly weird - "

She rubs her forehead.  "I don't even know what to - are you mystically empowered?  Like, have you noticed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think I'm hitting a bit harder? I haven't actually tested... Dreams have been funky..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What else did he say you'd be able to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, sense vampires, more athletic, kind of all around mild physical superhero package - like not superman, maybe more spiderman strength? It didn't sound like I have a lot of cool powers but also he insisted I'd be important to stopping apocalypses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any - I'm sorry, I shouldn't be quizzing you - are you okay?  Do you want me to - come with you, when he shows you the corroboration he said he had, or - just stay away from him, or - ?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's cool! And thanks for the offer. Up to you? He miiiiiight get annoyed I told you, he was all 'this is a spooky serious masquerade'..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rubs her forehead again.  "I feel like... I don't even know if I believe it.  I think, if you're gonna go - charging into this - I want to see his stuff too.  And I think I'd like it if someone else were there, like, another teacher - or Tag, maybe.  Just because - it's so out there, and maybe it's true, but if it's not then I don't know what he's... up to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you, me - I don't know any of the teachers, but Tag seems pretty steady?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's go with Tag.  Another teacher might..."

She sighs.  "I don't even know what another teacher would do.  - I'm sorry, I feel like I'm panicking more than you, and you're the person this - happened to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. I also learned about this earlier than you? And it's not the first time I've heard about - weird stuff happening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It isn't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing on like the scale of Sunnydale but I've heard people claim to have been attacked by someone trying to bite them, or someone whose arm turned a weird color, or someone got dead via suspicious circumstances - and a lot of that I chalked up to 'person who saw the thing was on drugs' but it lines up, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I think I see what you mean.  That makes me feel a bit better.  I still think I want Tag there though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I agree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did he say when he'd have the autopsy reports he said he'd get?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, I think next time we meet, which I'm not sure we specified?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "We'll wait for him to get in touch.  - What were the explanations for why no one's told?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People who try to go public seem to get assassinated by vampires a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay I think I'm panicking again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh do you want a hug - also I'll protect you Kaylee, I swear that - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, I'm also kind of worried about the amount of responsibility you're taking on, and saying things like that makes me worry about you more, but - a hug would be nice - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"I don't think it's too much for me," she says, "But - thanks for worrying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hughughug.  " - I mean, it does feel nice to have someone - swear to protect me like that, but - it also feels kind of unfair to you.  Like I shouldn't be letting you put yourself in that much danger on my behalf.  I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I get that. We can pester Giles about stuff you can do? I know vampires can't enter homes uninvited - he didn't super clarify what counts as a 'house,' and they catch on fire easy and holy water - or actually what counts as holy water, I bet there's a pagan sect willing to bless random weather events and maybe make one of us a priest - and crosses hurt them, though he didn't say why just crosses. He also thought they couldn't be negotiated with but I'm really not sure of that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I think I want to tell my parents.  But only after I've figured out if it's real or not - I don't know what they'd do, I don't know if they'd bother - checking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Waiting for - evidence - is good, yeah. I'm... Not sure where to start on my own, honestly, other than like hanging around dark alleys looking for vampires?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taking it as read that he's not lying - Mr. Giles can probably help you with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I need to check he's telling the truth, you know? And he's - wanting me to just kill vampires, no effort to talk made."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, of course - I guess I've been dividing it into Mr. Giles is correct and truthful about everything he said and it's all a big - I don't know, cult or scam or something.  And there's probably more possibilities in the middle.  But.  Yeah, if you're going to pursue it... I don't know where you'd start either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly hanging around dark alleys might not be bad. If vampires are real - decent chance I'm the Slayer. If they aren't - I'm pretty good at handling myself. Would give me someone on the 'other side' so to speak to talk to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."  She nods.  "Okay, yes, the hypothesis space is expanding, in my head."  She giggles, weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tighter hug. "We'll figure this out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh they've been hugging a while.  But it's nice.  "Yeah."

"Do you need anything?  I think I am enough not-having-a-panic-attack now that if you need to talk any of this out with somebody I can try being a sounding board."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shifts the hug into a sort of sideways lean.

"Dunno. I think - biggest thing bothering me is he insisted vampires and a lot of demons are always hostile? And I'd like - to try and change that, even if it's true now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always hostile?  Like - orcs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounded like it. Like... Stereotypical media sociopath kind of - good liars, charming, inherently evil, will play at good and then turn on you but most don't bother playing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that sounds... if he were talking about any subset of ordinary humans, I wouldn't even consider it, honestly.  But, if we're already granting that vampires are real, I don't..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we don't know if - they have free will, or they're really clever, like, monster robots. But... The one I punched seemed to have - emotional reactions to being punched that were human-typical?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I think - I was too freaked out to remember stuff like that.  ...I think it's worth distinguishing between, are they ordinary people Mr. Giles is prejudiced against, or are they monster-robots, or are they... non-robot people, who are still inevitably evil for some reason.  If I were going to - solve the problem of vampires, whatever the exact details of it are - I think I'd do slightly different things in each case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely." Lean. "Glad to have you. Probably would've gone raring off fists raised for a fight-talk by now if left to my own devices."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm still a bit worried about you, but.  You are kind of a - a bad-ass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks. I think I'm more scrappy than a badass, honestly..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it looks pretty similar from over here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the difference is whether you get knocked down first. You haven't seen me kissing the pavement yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee rubs her shoulder.  "You seem like you've had - a really rough time of it," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean I guess? Plenty of people've had worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe.  Just - I really can't overstate how serious my parents are about the doors-always-open thing, if you ever need - anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Kaylee. It means a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I can't pledge to protect you from vampires, I can at least do this for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet you'd be the healer in an rpg type thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do want to be a doctor!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know I entirely believe him about magic, either - did I mention that? He said it was addictive and stuff. Maybe you could look into that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you mentioned that.  I'd have to figure out where to get stuff not filtered by him, but if I can figure that out - I'm good at research.  Honestly, though, my thing with vampires being evil... it sounds so much like something people would be wrong about, you know what I mean?  Given that we believe him about magic existing, I'm more prepared to believe him that it's dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Magic's dangerous feels more - like obviously?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Exactly.  But if he's got stuff to study I can definitely study it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. That'll be a huge help - I'm not really book smart at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To complementary skillsets!" she says, raising an imaginary toast.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To a well-rounded team!" She raises the toast back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clink!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a rather impressive imitation of a clinking sound! It's still clearly made by human vocal cords, but just barely.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "You're good at that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" she says in an exact imitation of Kaylee's voice (as she would've heard on a recording).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh wow, that's really cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Took a while to get good at it, but I'm good at - the class of skills involved in acting?" she says in her own voice. "I can do characters, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you should enter the talent show."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds fun!"

She'll let the conversation meander to lighter topics after that - talents and games and what to do for fun - until it's time to go home.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she goes on another walk, slipping out after dark to lurk around alleyways, listening intently for trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

The streets of Sunnydale are quiet, incandescent yellow-orange under the streetlamps, and the alleys are dark.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps looking - ends up wandering into a park - and hears a scream.

Sounds like a time for her to test her Slayer speed!

...Is there an activation phrase for her superpowers or does she just start running -

'Just start running' seems to work.

Wow she's fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll very quickly then come on a sight of a man being tormented by waves of dirt and sand rising from the park's ground. It smells like blood, but there's no injuries on the man -

Yet.

There is a woman, however, maybe late teens or early twenties, standing at the apex of the sand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to test SUPER FLYING KICK!

"Pick on someone your own size, asshole!" Nausicaa shouts as she launches herself at the sand woman (who looks very demonic and is almost certainly the one controlling the sand, Nausicaa really hopes she didn't get that wrong...).

Permalink Mark Unread

Super flying kick connects, sending sand woman crashing back. Her sand collapses, and her prey makes a run for it.

She scowls at Nausicaa, baring her teeth. "If you're so eager to take his place - "

And she surges forwards, striking. She's strong and fast -

Permalink Mark Unread

But not Slayer fast - Slayer strong is another matter but Nausicaa's not letting her hit.

"Why attack him?" she demands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It proves my existence, that they fear me."

Permalink Mark Unread

...If this is a metaphysical 'feeds on fear' thing Nausicaa is about to go off on entirely the wrong track, but she thinks it's a psychological thing - she recognizes that desperate look in the sand woman's eyes.

"Fear proves nothing. People fear all sorts of imagined monsters. But I know I exist. Because I protect people. Because I saved a girl earlier, and I saved that man, and I'll save everyone!" Punch punch kick dodge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your philosophy is worth nothing. You are worth nothing!"

The woman lands a solid blow - sending Nausicaa flying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even with accelerated healing that'll bruise!

"I'm worth every hand I've stretched out into the darkness. Even if I die now... I'll be worth all the little ways I've made the world a better place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know nothing! Nothing of pain, of misery, of hatred - I'll show you my hatred!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think I don't know - "

The rest of the fight involves quite a bit of punching, and shouting, and earnest speeches about pain and suffering and doing better anyways, and then a bit of crying...

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's new friend has to carry her home at the end of it (okay they're both limping), but, Nausicaa does successfully sneak (okay flop) back in (demon friends: useful!).

She has Gaara help with bandages - luckily her face stops looking like she lost a fight with sandpaper by the time she has to leave for school - and then...

Okay so Gaara wants to follow her to school. Coolio. Nausicaa can make introductions easily then!

During lunch break:

"Kaylee, my search panned out yesterday - in a totally non-suspicious way, wanna get lunch outside with me today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, okay.  They let you eat outside if it's still warm enough, we should be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good!"

Once they're outside and out of earshot of passersby: "So! Two related bits of news. Magic and demons: definite. Demons who can be convinced to be friendly: also definite! As in I made a friend. And confirmed I have super strength and speed and heal fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, wow, that's - most of it, isn't it?  You made a demon friend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Her name's Gaara. She's a sand demon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you two meet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I caught her harassing someone. We had a fight-talk. She's turned over a new leaf."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to manifestly lack confidence at you at every turn but - you're sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty sure? I'm good at reading people."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Okay, good.  So... what exactly is a sand demon?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll introduce you - " She leads the way to an out of the way area, and calls out, "Gaara!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sand coalesces into a woman, who regards Kaylee a bit warily as she stands with her arms crossed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She startles a bit, but smiles.  "Hi!  Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you Nausicaa's friend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep, I'm Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't had a friend before. Nausicaa really likes you though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never?  That sounds - awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs, clearly a bit uncomfortable. "Nausicaa's my friend now, and - I'll do better."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a that’s-the-spirit sort of smile, and changes the subject: “So, you can turn into sand?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. And control sand, more usefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess if you just turned into a pile of sand that couldn't do anything that'd be less cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be useful defensively."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's true.  And for stealth if you were around a lot of the same kind of sand.  - Can you do sand of different, like, colors and fineness-es, or do you have a kind of sand that's just the kind you turn into?  Or is this a really, like, intrusive line of discussion, I've never met a sand demon before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine. I turn into a specific type of sand, but I can control most."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Is it the same kind as other sand demons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. It's different." She seems withdrawn at the question.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not supposed to have been different like I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Um.

"We, uh, don't have to talk about this if we don't want to, but.  I think whoever told you that was wrong.  About some stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If people hate you or reject you or reject you because of - the way you look when you transform, or anything like that - that's their problem, not yours, and you're allowed to just find better people to be around.  That's not always possible or easy, but if you get the opportunity, you can just take it and not look back."

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems a bit taken aback and wistful all at once, but - "I see why you're Nausicaa's friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you be my friend too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. What do friends do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, hang out and talk about stuff," she says.  "Go to parties or clubs or cool places together.  Sometimes spend time at each others' houses.  And if one friend is in trouble the others help out however they can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anywhere you'd like to go that you couldn't get into when you didn't know any humans?  The zoo's pretty fun, me and Nausicaa were going to take a trip there some time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't been to a zoo before."

Permalink Mark Unread

“They’re fun, you get to see a lot of cute and interesting animals.  We've got room for one more on our zoo trip, right, Nausicaa?”

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nausicaa had intended this to be a date but she can't exactly come out and say that if Kaylee hasn't noticed, she'd thought Kaylee was queer like her but maybe not - or maybe just so deep in the closet she hasn't noticed -

"Sure!" Nausicaa says out loud.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is oblivious!

"Great!  Sounds like fun.  Want to set a date?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She checks with Gaara that the demon's free, then - "Sure. How about this weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!"

"So... do you want to go talk to Mr. Giles again sometime sooner, now that you've confirmed most of the stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. After school today maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that sounds good.  - Gaara, did Nausicaa tell you about any of the - Mr. Giles stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little? He doesn't like vampires, and doesn't trust demons, and wants her to focus on fighting."

Permalink Mark Unread

Something occurs to her.  "Have you met any vampires?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, slowly. "Nausicaa asked me about some, but they don't talk to me much."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Mr. Giles said vampires are always evil.  If they were just - humans - I wouldn't have believed him, but this is my first experience with supernatural stuff, I don't know what's - reasonable, and what's not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My kind of demon is often aggressive, but not always evil. I - don't know about many others, just how they are in combat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you could say that about humans, honestly, depending on how you count often.  We're... gonna try to figure out what he's wrong about and what he's right about and - how we can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good goal. It's something I'd like to help with - though I think I want to help my own people, too. There's been a lot of chaos lately..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I'll understand if you don't want Mr. Giles to know about you until we've sussed him out some more, but we'll keep you posted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

To Nausicaa: "We should probably go talk to Tag before lunch is over, if we're gonna bring him along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good point." She says bye to Gaara, confirms the demon doesn't want them outright outing her to Giles yet, and then turns to Kaylee. "Lead the way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads them back inside to Tag's table.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Kay, Nausicaa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Tag! So uh - " Crap she doesn't know him as well how does she open this... "You know the suspicious barbecue fork gangs that seemed really wiggy to me?"

(She checked before heading over no one's going to overhear enough of this to piece together what they're actually talking about. Loud cafeterias have their advantages.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So how out there an explanation are you willing to entertain, because I am astoundingly talented at sticking my nose where it doesn't belong and some stuff's come to light."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...kid, tell me you didn't infiltrate a barbecue fork gang."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Not even I'm that fast. And that'd be kind of hard - especially since uh it looks like it's a lot of individuals maybe, and it's noooooot a weird barbecue fork fetish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Individuals - where's this going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - So the dude who attacked Kaylee tried to bite her and had fangs, and I got into a fist fight with someone who can control sand last night, and I've gotten a lot of confirmation that something supernatural is happening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fangs, like..."

He pantomimes vampire fangs, with two fingers in front of his mouth.

"Like the tines of the barbecue fork are actually, human canines.  Because they're vampires.  Is that what you're getting at."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Um, full disclosure, I didn't see fangs, but I didn't - not see fangs, if you know what I mean?  But he did definitely, want, to, bite me."  It's still a bit weird and uncomfortable to talk about.  "And I did see the controlling sand.  - Well, she turned into sand - I mean, a bunch of sand turned into her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Sand girl confirmed she knows vampires exist, though I haven't found any who'll sit still to answer my questions. Also the weird librarian said vampires exist, but I've been trying to confirm everything on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a reason I don't know about that looking for... vampires... who bite people, and drink their blood..."

(He rubs his forehead and mutters something that sounds like Jesus Christ.)

"...isn't a really dumb idea?

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I might have superpowers? Which uh I can demonstrate not here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I wanna see the superpowers.  ...I think I also wanna see the girl who turns into sand, unless she's also gonna try to drink my blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She won't. She's polite. Not sure we have time left in lunch... After school work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's polite, okay.  Yeah, let's meet up after school.  Try not to - get killed by fuckin' vampires before then, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do my best, scout's honor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So is this, what, a big spooky conspiracy secret, why have I not heard about vampires before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They seem to maintain the masquerade themselves, yeah - go after people trying to go to the media or something. And I don't think the human groups in the know are mostly interested in spreading the knowledge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know.  I will not do interviews."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be appreciated until we've unraveled more, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Looks like lunch is wrapping up.  Gotta get to my next class and pretend fuckin' vampires don't exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No worries.  See you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you."

Despite her nerves, the rest of the day goes well, and she lets Tag know she needs to talk to the creepy librarian before any power demonstrations - then ducks inside the library and goes looking for Giles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello again, Miss Uzun."  He peers briefly to see if anyone's with her, then says, "I'm afraid I don't have the autopsies you wanted just yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I figured. I found a demon to talk to - they're at least not all evil. I did confirm a lot of the magic stuff, though, and my superpowers, and that vampires exist, though the demon didn't know much about them. I do still want those autopsies, to be thorough, but... I believe you about supernatural stuff existing, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Well.  I would not have advised you to go looking for demons to interview just yet, but I'm glad it worked out the way it did.  What sort of demon did you encounter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sand controller. Didn't know what humans would call them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very nearly indistinguishable from a human, capable of transforming into a volume of sand roughly equal to their true body's volume and controlling nonmagical sand besides?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe the English term for such beings is sand demon," he says a touch wryly.  "If they have a less... on-the-nose name for themselves I don't know it.  They are known to sometimes cause trouble, but in my assessment they're no more so likely than any other thinking being."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She said her people are often aggressive, but it didn't sound like raging chaotic evil, yeah. She had some kind of distant mixed blood, like it made her sand kind of blood-drippy? But she didn't know which demon type that was from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't sound familiar to me either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be rare? Or just way too vague, I get the feeling there's a lot of blood demons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vague, yes.  Well within the range of what one expects of demons but not more informative than that.  I'd have to devote a minor research project toward searching for previous accounts of half-sand demons and their other parents.  If it is, or becomes, terribly important to your... acquaintance?... we may be able to find the time for it, but for now we should focus on your Slayer education."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think it's too important for now? My friend's gonna look into more but I guess she'll let me know if she wants help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well.  Now - if you're prepared to believe me about the existence of vampires and your role in fighting them, it's best to begin your training as soon as possible.  Do you have any other demands on your time this afternoon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to go home and let my foster parents know where I'll be if I'm going anywhere. And I had some friend plans. Tomorrow's wide open though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll trust you to invent an appropriate excuse to stay after tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, catching up on school work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See, very simple."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. See you later, G-man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good day, Miss Uzun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and practically skips out, then goes to find Tag and Kaylee. She has superpower testing to do!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag and Kaylee convene.  "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're in a good mood!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! G-man reacted well. Also I'm really excited about superpower testing, I've wanted to be a superhero since I was like five. Admittedly I expected a different powerset..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a bit at "G-man."  "Did you have any ideas?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For testing? So far I seem to have the Captain America build - strength but not like throwing tanks, super agility and speed but I'm not gonna be vanishing before anyone's eyes... Maybe some combat instincts? Hard to tell, I already knew how to fight. Maybe see how quickly I can run laps - or parkour! I'm terrible at parkour, I bet I'm great at it now!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm... are there any gymnastics you couldn't do before that you think you could do now?

Permalink Mark Unread

"And do you have enough super-durability to not crack your skull open if you turn out to be wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know I heal quick!" she says cheerfully. "And bones don't seem to break as easy? But we can use mats at first. And yeah, gymnastics is a good idea, probably less risky than rooftop hopping as a starter..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- do we have mats?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The gym does! And the gym teacher likes me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not totally sure sneaking into the gym after school is a great idea..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worse case scenario someone's like 'hey fuck off' and we fuck off and then the person forgets about it five minutes later, probably.  We're not troublemakers."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - yeah, fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't proposing sneaking! Especially since there's some kind of sport thing going on? I was gonna be my charming self and ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - oh, yeah, that works too," Kaylee says a bit sheepishly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Come on. What do you think we should tell her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nausicaa knows some gymnastics and wants to show off?  If she likes you you can be cute and, you know, unconvincingly pretend to just want to get some practice in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll probably appreciate that I'm trying not to bust my head open, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, good thing I'm here, then," he says wryly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll nominate you for Most Likely to be the Only Sane One when it comes time for senior titles."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag's face pretty much always looks like that, but he's amused.  She'll learn to figure it out gradually.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll call it a success.

Off to charm the teacher!

Permalink Mark Unread

Teacher is easily charmed; mats are easily acquired.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes them out to a bit out of the way - where no one will have an obvious and continual line of sight on them - and... Hm, they don't have bars and stuff... Does Kaylee. Know what gymnasts do. Because Nausicaa's idea is "stick them at an inward corner and try to ninja run up the wall by bouncing off the two walls".

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe start with, like.  A flip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spoilsport. But, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Tag step back to give Nausicaa some flipping space.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets up the mats and jumps straight up and - okay she doesn't really know how to flip but she'll give it her best shot!

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't?  Perhaps actually she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is so! Much! Fun!

She flips! She does complicated jumps and cartwheels and has a blast not being clumsy!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee applauds!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wanna do the ninja run now!" she exclaims, bouncing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll allow it.  But, you know, aim for the mat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will, don't worry."

And she sets up the mat, angles herself to the wall the way she's seen her friends do, gets a running start and a leap and tic-tacs properly off the first step -

And then goes flying.

In the wrong direction.

...She will not be landing on the mats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee yelps.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah shit - "

Tag dashes after her and crouches next to her where she's lying prone on the floor.  "Kid, you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was awesome! I went so far!" She bounces up. "Let's try again!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, at least you're not dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee dashes to Nausicaa's side.  "Are you sure you're okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fit as a fiddle! You can give me a checkup if you're concerned?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It just looked really bad - well, if you're sure you're not hurt I think we can add durability to the list - " she laughs weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure, Kaylee. Thanks for checking, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you're not concealing internal bleeding and do want to try that again we should probably do it someplace less conspicuous in case you knock something over."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awwww, I was having fun. But yeah, I guess you're right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty convinced about the superpowers though.  Still think I wanna see the girl who turns into sand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's probably wandered off, but I told her when I was finishing school so she might be back soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's round me off to convinced on all counts, at least for a bit.  So.  What's our next move?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. I still wanna talk to a vampire?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you sure you're ready to, like - go looking for trouble?  Because if Mr. Giles is right about vampires, or at least about some subset of vampires, that seems like it's - risking inviting lots of fights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I mean I think I can handle myself in fights?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might not be a bad idea anyway," Tag says.  "I kinda wanna hear Giles's story."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, what's that 'it' referring to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant talking to Giles first, getting some practice in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spoilsport. But I am meeting with him tomorrow. Guess I can continue power testing today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs.  "Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good! I like power testing. It's fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Power testing proceeds; her "Captain America" estimate is broadly borne out.  Gaara never does show up that afternoon; the gang reconvenes the next day to talk to Giles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, do we have, like, a game plan?" she asks the other two. "For talking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it more complicated than just, we all show up and say, hey, we know about vampires, we want to hear what you have to say too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Long as he's not gonna turn us over to the masquerade police."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Pretty sure he won't? He seemed reasonable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me.  Let's head to the library."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right!"

Onwards to the library! Nausicaa knows not to shout in libraries, so she doesn't call out to him when she enters, just looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

He emerges from the stacks, after a few moments, and blinks.

"Ah, hello - children.  Are you here for a study group?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The thing we were talking about yesterday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Your friends are helping you get caught up?  I hope you remembered to budget time for our - private tutoring session this afternoon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told them! About the thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I hope you don't mean what I think you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there, uh, a reason we're talking around it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno! Is there anyone else in the library?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is not, Miss Uzun.  I was being evasive for their sake."  He gestures at her friends, and rubs his forehead.  "To be absolutely clear - what exactly did you tell them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vampires, I have superpowers, demons, demon friend? Neither of them's going to the press or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I asked if you were capable of discretion, I meant to impress upon you that you should not do precisely this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine! And I need someone on the outside who knows like what I'm doing, I'm not gonna tell the parents I'm running out at night to fight vampires - but Kaylee and Tag can cover for me, can keep track of stuff like check ins and where I said I'd be, and raise the alarm if I don't check in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is not a position a child should be put in!  And I recognize the irony of that statement, but it is not a position I would put you in if I had any other choice!  The Slayer is a target, which is why her identity is a closely guarded secret, and anyone who works alongside the Slayer is also a target.  I've spent my life preparing for that responsibility, and in your case - I would release you from it if I could.  But that life is not something your friends ever signed up for, and it is not a life they should be asked to live."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah we sorta did sign up for it actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did a lot of vague 'so do you want to know this infohazard' stuff first! And if I'm hanging with them they'll be targets, knowing my secret identity helps them stay safe!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you impress upon them that their lives would be in danger if they were careless with this information?  Did you explain to them that they would have to be more reticent with this secret than you yourself were, lest the people they tell let someone else know in turn, and so on until the information reaches a disguised vampire or an agent thereof?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes! I've dealt with big secrets before, I know how to read people as trustworthy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs.  "I suppose the damage is done in any case."  To Tag and Kaylee: "I hope I don't need to tell either of you that you are not the Vampire Slayer and should not go hunting for vampires yourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not an idiot, no.  Although for the record Nausicaa didn't mention anything with a definite article, she just said she had superpowers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Slayer is a mystical title, passed on to a new, ah, teenage girl, every time the previous Slayer dies.  It is the source of your friend's supernatural abilities.  Slayers tend to find themselves entangled in significant events in the supernatural world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He honestly has yet to convince me it's any more impressive than a Captain America package. Which is still pretty fun, but I'm not exactly twisting reality into pretty shapes here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Often the Slayer will figure into prophecies, which can be as significant as any of her other abilities.  I must recommend in the strongest possible terms against any reality twisting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not gonna, I'm just saying comic books lied to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They will do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...So, vampires?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," Giles says. "I had planned to use this afternoon to continue Miss Uzun's Slayer training, but if you are to be informed, you should be fully informed."

He recapitulates his earlier crash course on vampires: invariably evil, drink blood, singed by holy water and crosses -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, now, hold on," says Tag. "Holy water is a real... you can just go to a Catholic church and... you know, pick up some holy water. It's not a secret magic thing that exists behind the masquerade. Are you saying Catholic priests have magic powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I would not characterize it that way, no," Giles says. "But objects and substances can be imbued with - mystical significance - by methods far more pedestrian than their ritual use in one of the most widely practiced religions in the English-speaking world. Holy water is not magical itself, but magical things may react to it differently than they react to chemically identical water that has not been blessed, or water collected from dewdrops, or samples from particular significant bodies of water.  For example."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Okay so question, is the important thing the religious symbolism, or did those things become popular religious symbolism because vampires are inherently freaked out by the letter 't'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The history of vampirism is somewhat unclear," says Giles.  "Vampires in particular don't seem to be repelled by other widely used religious symbols, certainly, so it can't be merely that they are susceptible to religious symbolism itself.  But demons and dark creatures corresponding to other cultures' mythologies tend to respond negatively to their own culture's rituals and symbols more often than to others', which is suggestive of religious symbolism being an important factor in imbuing an object or substance or symbol with mystical power.  Most experts agree that the, ah, anatomically modern vampire as it were, postdates Christianity by a number of centuries; I doubt that the cross was terribly harmful to anything vampire-like before it was a religious symbol."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Have you ever done a study, on, like, non-Christian vampires, if this is possibly belief related?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We haven't.  It may be an interesting avenue of research.  But the common wisdom is that - "  He frowns pensively, composing his thoughts.  "You might say that crosses are harmful to vampires, not because the vampires are Catholic, but because vampirism itself is Catholic, as it were, and so the beliefs of the individuals afflicted with it would make no difference.  If that makes... any sense at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm not. Like. Good enough at puzzles to figure out the weird stuff that implies about magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, one can make a life's work out of deciphering this sort of thing.  ...I do have a diagram I could draw you, if you think that would help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. Maybe leave that to my friends. They're all smart-like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We may be getting a bit off-track," Giles admits.  "I was explaining vampires' strengths and weaknesses."

He goes through the rest of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of feels very - like I bet I could've guessed most of that just knowing about vampires, but it sounds like vampire myths are older than vampires? Which is weird?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are schools of thought which suggest that the forms that dark creatures take are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by preexisting myths."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite so."

"Now," he says, "Miss Uzun, we should schedule a regular meeting time for you to spar and study vampires.  Ideally the Slayer should practice every day, but then in an ideal world she would not be recruited at random from the ranks of fifteen-year-olds," he says dryly.  "What would you say to meeting with me once a week, and choosing from among my recommendations a mundane self-defense class to attend regularly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's probably better for me to be able to use my full strength when practicing, isn't it? Like, if there's a slip at the self defense class, that's a whole class who might've noticed something's up - and I won't have a good sense of my strength if I don't use it. Honestly, I'm already good at self defense - practicing against my demon friend to apply that to new superpowers would be good, and otherwise I need to get used to moving around. Like the parkour I was practicing, and that I can do every day easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

“My plan had been to arrange for a private tutor, but that is a fair objection in any case. How about you and your - demon friend, I don’t believe you mentioned their name - meet with me after school twice a week, then?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Twice a week works just fine. I'll have to ask her about whether she wants to come along, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, fair warning, you'll have to spar with me otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You any good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know the, ah, theory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I can train you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I'm sure I have... knowledge to impart.  I just may have you try it out on the training dummies.  I am unfortunately an unaugmented human."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're doing really well as the super secret agent guy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pleased to hear you think so.  And I'm glad you're already looking for ways to get the most out of your training.  It's a habit that will serve you well as Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like making the most of things! It's fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A useful hobby for a Slayer to have."

Permalink Mark Unread

He does recommend a self-defense class, but for Tag and Kaylee rather than Nausicaa; and then retrieves a few volumes about vampires (smaller, more recently written, more accessible than VAMPYR) to lend out to Nausicaa for study.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great!

...She's guessing there's no vampire audiobooks. Well, she'll just have to struggle through these between textbooks, maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can look through them too, if you like, I'm good at research.  I'll have to keep them hidden from my parents, though, unless..."

She takes a breath.

"Mr. Giles, I'd like to - make my pitch for telling my parents about this.  I understand why it's a bad idea to tell other kids, even if I trust them.  But my parents are different, they're going to be able to tell that something's going on with me, I'm not sure I could keep it totally secret no matter how hard I try.  And I'm sure that... if I couldn't convince them not to tell anyone else, if I got them in a room with you, you could."

He pinches the bridge of his nose.  "I suppose it's a better choice than telling another student.  But, Miss Whitlock, you understand that to keep a secret, you must refrain from telling even the vast majority of trustworthy people, because the more people you tell, the more chances there are for something to go wrong, or for you to be incorrect about who is trustworthy; and that only needs to happen once.  Conspiracies have to be small, and - it seems to be becoming my responsibility to restrict the size of this one."

"This may be terribly unfair of me, but... I think that right now I can countenance telling one set of parents.  It may well be wiser than remaining, myself, the only adult in the group.  You three will have to decide for yourselves which set you tell."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances between the other two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag sighs.  "Honestly I'm gonna move out as soon as I can anyway.  My folks don't need to know right now, if it's really a bad idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh I have literally known my parents for like three days, foster people are hard to read because they're almost all nice at first basically? But I think they're not the ultra committed ride-or-die for a kid they just met type? Like, would not tell them unless it's a 'hey this is why you need to pack up and go' thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Okay.  I'll... make up some excuse to get my parents to stop by the library after school."

"...Thanks, guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what friends are for."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.  Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Friendly shoulder nudge!

"So. Practice session? Or should we head?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't ask you to stay much longer today, but we should at least schedule our next visit.  Do you have a particular two days that work best for you?  It would be better for them to be spread out, rather than two days in a row, for instance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't super figured out clubs yet but I probably won't be doing too many - Fridays and uh Tuesdays?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll ask assorted scheduling questions - what should she bring, when should she expect to be done... Then head out with her friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That went pretty well, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! There's a reasonable person under all those rules."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "He's a lot better at meaning well than Principal Flutie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I can make a reasonable person out of Flutie, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'll be the fuckin' day," Tag says amicably.  (That's his amicable face, can't you tell.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, don't underestimate my charm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! You two."

And after some light conversation, she'll head home. (Running, instead of taking the bus. She has enough time, and could use the exercise.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee takes the bus home, composing her lie. Maybe some kind of... special parent-teacher conference. Mr. Giles heard that she wants to be a doctor and wants to get her and her parents all in a room together to discuss career trajectory? Is that a thing? That might be a thing. She's pretty sure Mr. Giles liked her anyway, before all this; she studies in the library a lot, it's not that much of a stretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's home soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

And at dinner:

"So, you know Mr. Giles the librarian, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," her father says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well," says Kaylee, twisting her hands together under the table, "I told him about wanting to become a doctor, and he thinks it's a really good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a good idea," her mom says, a little smugly.

Her dad chuckles.  "Well, I'm glad to hear he's so supportive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actually he wanted us all to get together for a sort of - informal parent-teacher conference career counseling thing," she says. "He - I guess he used to be a guidance counselor, so he may have some advice for me, and for all of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a good idea!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought so," she says. "Are you both free this Tuesday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing," her dad says.

"I can make it work," says her mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Okay, good. He wants us all to meet in the library right after school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great."

She can't keep up the grin. Probably won't be able to keep up the dinner. It turns out she really hates lying to her parents.

She pushes her plate away. "Excuse me," she says, and stands up. "I think I'm finished with dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Are you okay?" her dad says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, produces another smile. "I'm just full. I'm going to go study in my room, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," her mother says.  She's frowning a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

She departs, hurriedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day, Gaara comes to peer at Tag when he leaves the school. She's not really in sight of other students, but it's maybe a close thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She catches his eye, and he nods in greeting.

Permalink Mark Unread

She confirms there's no one near, then comes up. "You're Nausicaa's friend, Tag, aren't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you know her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kaylee introduced us.  ...Do you go to," he pokes his thumb over his shoulder toward the campus, "Sunnydale High?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't go to school."

Permalink Mark Unread

He frowns, but in a pensive rather than a particularly accusatory manner.  "Graduate already?  What're you doing lurking around campus?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been to a school. Nausicaa thought I might want to talk to you, and also I heard some rumors about a Hellmouth here."

Permalink Mark Unread

He glances around, as casually as he can.

"You're the girl who can turn into sand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Hellmouth sounds bad.  What's a Hellmouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An entrance to the hell dimensions. There's a lot of - energy of a kind - around them. They tend to attract problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "So a place that tends to need a Slayer.  Gotcha.  I'll send it up the chain of command.  - Uh, just for my own peace of mind, could I see a quick demonstration of the sand thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." Her skin goes sandy, and starts peeling off and running down in rivulets - then flows back in, and she's back to normal.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  Did you want to meet the librarian?  He's the leader of Nausicaa's miniature conspiracy thing, and I'm pretty sure he knows about you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Watchers' Council don't have a good reputation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh hell."  He runs his fingers through his hair.  "Bad how?  Should we be trying to get Nausicaa out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know much about how they'll treat her. But they're unkind to us, and I've heard of demons killed by Slayers who almost certainly weren't doing anything harmful."

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs.  "It's possible Giles is," he throws up his arms in an exaggerated shrug, "one of the good ones, I guess.  But I'll keep an eye on him, and on her.  Do you know anywhere we could go to get more of the other side of the story?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. My sister might know, but... I'm not popular."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah let's not poke that.  "All right.  Thanks for the warning.  I gotta get home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing catches fire and explodes between then and the Tuesday that Nausicaa and company are scheduled to meet with Giles again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's more than a bit nervous sitting in the library waiting for Kaylee's family to get there for the parent-librarian-slash-secret-agent-dude conference

Permalink Mark Unread

"They should be here any minute," says Kaylee, not for the first time that afternoon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag is impassive.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a knock on the library door.

"That will be them," Giles says.  "Let me."

He gets the door and ushers Kaylee's parents inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Nausicaa!" her mom says when she sees her.  "Kaylee didn't tell us you'd been invited as well.  Good to see you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to see you two, Mister and Misses Whitlock!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom holds up one hand.  "Helena, please," she says, smiling.  "And my husband's name is Rob.  We never introduced ourselves properly, did we?  I'm sorry about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, really! Oh - this's our friend Tag, he's a grouch but I'm pretty sure there's a melty core under all that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena laughs merrily.  "It's nice to meet you, Tag."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag nods politely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So!" says Rob.  "Career counseling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, yes, well," Mr. Giles says.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes a breath, composing himself.  "I'm afraid, Mr. and Mrs. Whitlock, that I've brought you here under false pretenses.  Your daughter was afraid you wouldn't believe what I had to tell you unless I could show you firsthand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow he's bad at this gently breaking it thing.

Nausicaa's super not sure how to not make it worse, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rob is looking between Giles and Kaylee.

"What do you mean?" Helena asks warily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The man who attacked your daughter several days ago was - very likely - a vampire."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena moves to her daughter's side and takes her hand.  The knuckles on her opposite hand go white.  But there's a bland smile pasted over her face as she replies.  "I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mom - it's true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kaylee - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"You remember I told you he tried to bite me?  You remember I told you about his face?  And - I haven't seen other vampires but I've met a girl Nausicaa introduced me to who can turn into sand.  And Nausicaa can - Nausciaa, can you show them - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Giles isn't explaining this well. You know the suspicious barbecue fork deaths? Gangs? Don't do that. Not even as weird initiations or as like a gang sign. The puncture wounds are a match for human incisors, though."

"And yeah I can show - I have superpowers that round off to improved agility and strength, it's..."

She bends over - and picks up Giles' desk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena doesn't move or say anything for a moment.

She sits down.

Rob's in pretty much the same boat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you right away, but - it has to be a secret.  People who know and who tell lots of people - become targets."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena regains her composure a bit faster.  She pulls Kaylee into a hug and smooths her hair.

When they break apart, she has her hands on her daughter's shoulders.  "I understand why you were worried about telling us," she says.  "And - well, I can't picture anything like this happening twice, I can barely picture it having happened once.  But you don't ever have to worry about protecting us, you understand?  If you ever get involved in something like this, you can and should tell us about it, and if it really needs to be secret we'll keep it secret, all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods, looking a bit shamefaced.

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena pulls her into another hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa puts the desk back down. "Kaylee's really great!" she says. "Very sensible."

Permalink Mark Unread

That startles a laugh out of Helena.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I should not go into the dumb things she's kept me from doing because I like pretending to be a good influence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll admit," Helena says, "that my daughter has a habit of seeking out people who might be a bad influence on her and instead being a good influence on them.  Not that I'm accusing you of anything, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course! - So, uh, questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena turns to Giles.  "I'd like to see those coroner's reports now, if you don't mind."

Rob addresses Nausicaa: "So how do you and Tag fit into all this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As far as I've seen I've got superpowers. Giles says I also have some kind of mystic destiny thing going on. Kaylee's my friend, Tag's also my friend and is as far as I know a normal human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am a normal human," Tag confirms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's sort of - more that Tag and I fit into Nausicaa's story, than that they fit into mine," Kaylee says.  "She's the one with the superpowers, she sort of - brought me into the loop.  And - I felt weird about Mr. Giles being the only adult in the, the conspiracy, so I told him I was going to tell you guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rob nods and frowns.  "What sort of mystical destiny did Mr. Giles tell you you have, exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some kind of - the power set passes on to another person when the last one with it dies, and I'll find myself involved in mystical plots and all? The title is 'Vampire Slayer' which I think is dumb, since apparently no one's even tried, like, an embassy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The school librarian is sending you out to... slay vampires."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he's part of some ancient vampire hunting conspiracy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That can't hunt vampires on its own without help from a teenage girl?  I don't mean to insult you, Nausicaa," he adds, "it just seems like Mr. Giles is being - criminally irresponsible, by putting you in the position he is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If there's some kind of mystical destiny weirdness going on it's possible I'm pretty much a weathervane? But, yeah, I don't think they're using resources well. I'd probably be a better diplomat. The superpowers - they'd help with people who just respect strength. But... He's mostly been talking about training me, not sending me out into the wilderness alone. And I dunno if they've got other superheroes in training."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I don't have any right to forbid you from getting involved in this," Rob says reluctantly.  "But just bear in mind that if you ever want or need to get out, we will get you out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. It means a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what adults are for, keeping kids safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a kid, but - people should keep each other safe. In general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, fair enough.  I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's cool. And thanks, for being cool with - " she waves a hand vaguely " - all this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rob smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena and Giles return.

"All right," says Helena.  "Color me at least provisionally convinced that vampires and supernatural creatures are real, and too dangerous for the police or military to handle.  Nausicaa - I overheard the end of your conversation with my husband, and he's right that we don't have the right to tell you what to do.  And honestly, from what Giles tells me, conventional authorities aren't qualified and unconventional authorities essentially don't exist, so if you can get in and out of fights with vampires safely it might be the best course.  But if it comes down to it, I and my husband are both prepared to side with you over Mr. Giles, and he understands that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. I'll be trying to avoid most fights, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena smiles.  "That sounds like a good idea."

"Kaylee - I probably don't need to tell you this, but I'm going to anyway.  You don't have superpowers, you don't have a mystical destiny.  I can't and wouldn't stop you from helping your friend save the world, but you are to stay off of the front lines, understand?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods seriously.  "That was my plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to hear it.  Now - given that there don't seem to be any better hands in which to leave the supernatural world, if you want to pivot from focusing on your studies to become a doctor toward focusing on figuring how best to help Nausicaa and Mr. Giles - protect the world from vampires - I'll understand and I'll help cover for you.  I do think that you and me and your father and Mr. Giles should have a longer discussion on that subject at some point in the very near future, but for now I won't press the point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly, talking to you guys about that was a big part of why I wanted to bring you into the loop."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena smiles.  "You're a smart girl.  Now."  She turns to Giles.  "I understand you had some vampire-hunting lessons for Nausicaa that Kaylee and Tag were going to sit in on.  I hope we're invited?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine with you guys coming, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right.  Now, Miss Uzun, did you bring the dagger I gave you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This thing? Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Helena has a look on her face like she's making a very deliberate decision not to say anything.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good.  Now, if we move some of these tables, we can make up an adequate space to go through some basic forms, if you'll all help me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She helps, eagerly. She's very good at moving furniture, at least.

(Superpowers are so cool.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Tables are moved.

"Now, the advantage of this weapon is that the motion to strike with it is almost identical with throwing an ordinary punch," he says.  "So you can put all of your Slayer strength behind it, and that combined with the way that vampiric flesh flees from worked wood will make piercing the heart much easier than it would be with an ordinary stake."  He adds in an aside to the parents: "A stake through the heart will kill a vampire instantly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Do we know why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a science person but that sounds like maybe a good idea to figure out." She feels weird giving them tips on killing people she's gonna try diplomacy-ing, but, well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There may be little more reason behind it than there is reason for them to be harmed by holy water," he says.  "And the Watcher's Council is - unfortunately - slow to take on that sort of new project.  But I will certainly mention your recommendation.  Now - at the risk of telling you something you already know, this is how best to throw a punch - "

Permalink Mark Unread

She indeed knows how to throw a punch! It isn't form-perfect, but she seems to have already adjusted for her increased strength and agility.

Permalink Mark Unread

He compliments, makes minor corrections, and as Nausicaa practices her form, starts catching Helena and Rob up on Vampires 101.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exerting herself like this: super fun!

She'll go until he tells her to stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now, in fighting vampires, your number one priority is to stake them as soon as possible," he says, "so there's relatively little use for techniques that don't use the fist.  But against other sorts of creatures, they can be useful."  He takes her through a few more basic forms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't say number one priority," she reminds him. "Still don't believe you I can't convince any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They really aren't like humans, or even most actively malicious demons," Giles says.  "Too little of their behavior can be explained as merely the actions of something that requires human blood to survive.  But in any case I suspect that any vampire you are likely to encounter anytime soon will, ah, rapidly justify the use of lethal force against it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns. There's a lot of arguments she could make about that - how self defense is narrowly defined for a reason, especially lethal self defense - but she feels too frustrated to articulate it.

She goes back to punching, shoulders tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Training proceeds.

Permalink Mark Unread

As the evening wraps up, Giles retrieve two volumes.

"This," he says, gesturing with one, "is a recent history of vampiric and demonic activity in Sunnydale.  And this is a compilation of various individuals' reports of their interactions with vampires.  I think both will be instructive.  I'll let you decide who should take them home and how you schedule discreet study sessions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about I let people who're good at that handle the reports."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we are to have a conspiracy it is probably best we take advantage of it," Giles agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can bring the books home with me," Kaylee says, "that way no one has to hide them from their parents."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Kaylee!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Friendly shoulder bump. "Glad I decided to tell you. This'd be a lot harder without friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bump.  "I can't even imagine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd probably be killed by the books."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.  "Then who would save the world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe the books would feel horrible about what they did to me and take over my job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But would they be anywhere near as good at it as you," she says seriously.  "Would they have already made friends with a friendly demon within days of learning about their magical destiny?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully their need for redemption will carry them through. That's practically plot armor, right there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles again.  "Well, I'm glad we don't have to rely on just that."

" - we, uh, should probably get going, if you don't want to miss the late bus, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was gonna get a ride home with my parents, so - see you tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee departs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag catches up with Nausicaa on the late bus.  "Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Something up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your friend Gaara found me after school a couple days ago, mentioned something about a Hellmouth.  Did that ever come up when you were talking with Giles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Con-something of magic? There's one in Sunnydale. Not a lot of going into it though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "That's about what Gaara said too.  Attracts lots of - demons and supernatural shit.  So their stories match that far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything where they don't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing I can remember.  - I gotta start taking notes."

" - You know, I've been thinking.  If we get in touch with some, you know, non-homicidal demons, and they also think vampires are always evil, that'd be a point in favor of Giles's story.  Do you know what the deal is with the other sand demons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. And talking to Gaara - sounded like they're a really military strong guy culture, and they don't like her because she's part some kind of blood demon, I think through her mom. She doesn't know which but there's some kind of prejudice going on there."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Maybe not the best alternate source then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can make a point of looking, but - the thing about demons hanging around here being mostly aggressive ones might bear out... Though I guess if it's easy to go back and forth here you might also get, like, frat bro demons hitting the nightlife. Or tourists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tourist demons.  Well, if you figure out a way to identify demonic nightlife, let me know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be a fun challenge. Get a good fake ID, scope out some clubs..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd want to figure out ways to identify human-passing demons first.  Maybe look through Giles's private library for information on the friendly ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, smart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I could probably get us some fake IDs, though, if phase one goes well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooooh. Didn't know you had a wild side."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs one shoulder.  "I know some people.  I'm gonna preemptively vote against using them to go out drinking for shits and giggles, for the record."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be responsible. Thanks, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, and turns the conversation to lighter stuff as the bus arrives.

Home's easy, homework's hard but doable if she forces herself, and the night's uneventful.

Permalink Mark Unread

*

The Line and Sinker caters primarily to creatures that prey on humans, which means its biggest customer base is vampires.  A knot of them are clustered in one corner.

"It's been a while, hasn't it?" says a scrawny, timid-looking one.  "Since anybody's heard any stories?  A new one's probably been called by now."

Scrawny's large, broad, scarred companion grunts in agreement.

"Oh, a new one's been called, all right," says yet a third.  He's not as big, but he's muscular, and he's the type who likes to leave his game face on whenever he's not trying to blend in.

Scrawny eeps.  "How do you know?"

"She's in town," Gameface says smugly.  "I went toe to toe with her just the other day.  Not all they're cracked up to be, Slayers."

"You killed a Slayer?" Scrawny gasps.

"Nah," Gameface says.  "Had to let her get away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that so?" a new voice purrs.

She's usually not very notable, usually sits in a booth to the back with no more than two other vampires. She doesn't seem to have anyone with her now.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smirks and slicks back his hair.  "I had her on the ropes for a while," he says.  "She was slippery.  But I scared her off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fascinating. What did she look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Little blonde thing, even smaller than this goblin here."  He slaps Scrawny Vampire on the back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds scrappy. She get in any hits?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One or two," he says casually.  "I wasn't worried, though.  I don't think she even knew what I was!"

Permalink Mark Unread

A new Slayer, certainly, perhaps without a Watcher...

"Where was this?" Could help narrow down the search.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just in town."  He names an intersection.  "Little alleyway off the main road."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. Your victory must have been quite impressive..." She'll let him talk for a bit, see if he lets anything else slip.

Permalink Mark Unread

He brags, and embellishes, and makes offhand reference to the girl he was trying to eat before the Slayer stopped him.  Reading between the lines, he probably didn't come off as impressive as he's claiming.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enough information, then.

She disentangles herself from the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

He barely notices.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she lingers a bit, trying to see if there's anything else of interest - not particularly -

And then she departs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee gathers Tag and Nausicaa after school the following Thursday.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I looked over the books Mr. Giles gave us," she says.  "Not super-thoroughly, it's only been a couple days, but I gave them a good skim.  The general-vampire-information one tends to agree with Mr. Giles's story, it has stuff like - showing trends in crime rates compared with when a bunch of new vampires are supposed to have been created in a given city; a few accounts of like, organized crime groups that seemed more focused on causing trouble and being awful than usual that turned out to be run by vampires."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. - Wait how are vampires made anyways?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They actually cover that in one of the other books we passed around last week - hold on, I took notes - "

She retrieves a spiral-bound notebook from her backpack and flips through it.

"Here we go, a vampire turns a human into a vampire by drinking some of their blood and then - " she makes a face " - force-feeding the human some vampire blood, usually their own.  - The human can drink it voluntarily, it still works, but that book thinks it usually isn't consensual."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- Uh can we break that somehow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, interrupt the process of transforming into a vampire?  I think people usually die, and then... are dead, for a bit... before they transform into a vampire, maybe if we could get to them then...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. It just - seems it should be possible?" She shrugs; she's not good at puzzles like this. Off the wall solutions, sure, and maybe that's what's needed...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we should try to popularize cremation."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a bit. "Might not hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

She frowns pensively.  "What if we... pre-staked the corpses?  How big does a piece of wood have to be to count as a stake?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Huh. No clue. Maybe Giles knows?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure it's in here somewhere," she says, flipping through her notes.  "But this is assuming they even go through the morgue at all..."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Yeah a smart vampire'd probably keep the body with them until whoever finished turning..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depending how long it takes."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - that I remember reading about, it varies based on how much blood, you know, went each way, but supposedly it can be as quick as a couple hours.  I don't know if that's the median or - best-case-for-the-vampire - or what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah that's fast, possibly too much... Guess Giles will know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and jots down a note in the back of her notebook.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ugh. I don't have any other bright ideas right now..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There might be something we can do with holy water, but - me neither."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ugh. This is - I hate complicated sticky situations like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's possible that three teenagers aren't enough to save the entire world," he says, sympathetically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ugh. So much for a mystical destiny... Which is still why I think me being all diplomatic's gonna do the most good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll check out Giles's books on human passing demons tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems good, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

It transpires that "human-passing demons" are only half the story.  Some demon species, like sand demons, look human, or almost-human, or Star-Trek-alien, in their true forms, but there are also several species of shapeshifters.  Most of the second category couldn't be mistaken for humans in their natural form, but can assume human shapes with effort ranging from "slight constant expenditure of energy and/or focus" all the way to "ritualistically consume human organs from people you recently killed once every seven years."

Also, "species" is not always a particularly apt term when it comes to demons.  There's plenty of precedent for different types of demon being mutually interfertile, for one thing.  Sometimes you'll get a single clan or family of demons whose members all have common characteristics that don't correspond to any recorded species.  And then you have the types whose population is maintained mostly by abiogenesis; or who are created intentionally or unintentionally by some other type of demon; or who are unique, or single-digit in population, and haven't been recorded reproducing at all.

This and more, Kaylee and Tag and Nausicaa will learn in their researches over the next couple weeks, in between studying vampires.  (It's easier to wound a vampire with any wooden weapon than it is a human, not just a stake - and much harder to harm them with metal or other traditional weapon substrates.  It's hard to tell exactly how pierced a vampire heart needs to be by a stake, since successful stakings don't leave corpses, but the consensus is "probably needs to pierce at least one ventricle to a diameter of more than half an inch".  Holy water is an effective ranged deterrent but you're not going to kill a vampire with it unless you trick them into taking a hearty swig of it.  Crosses aren't any more physically harmful than holy water but they're strongly psychologically aversive.  In general the people who can invite a vampire into a house are its legal residents, but there are plenty of weird edge cases, here are an example dozen, can you guess what would happen in each case, answers printed upside-down for your convenience.  And so on.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Giles is still reluctant to bring a crossbow onto the actual grounds of the school, but he's happy to arrange to discreetly meet with Nausicaa and company outside of school grounds, if they can convene to practice regularly without arousing suspicion.  He teaches her to clean and care for her punching dagger - "The actual shaft is reinforced with metal, but if the tip of the metal shaft is exposed it's not going to be anywhere near as effective as a wooden stake no matter how sharp it is" - and continues coaching her in martial arts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag and Kaylee both enroll in self-defense classes - mundane ones, but recommended by Giles for being focused on real-world use.  Tag forms a habit of ducking unobtrusively in and out of the local Catholic church to collect water from the font.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee buys and tries out a bunch of water guns; she paints the ones with the longest range in drabber, less eye-catching colors and hands them out to the group, repurposing the leftovers as birthday presents for assorted little cousins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa now always runs too and from school, and to basically everywhere that takes less than an hour. Over the roofs, where she can. It helps her learn the town, and build her fitness. She takes note of how to escape from different places, how to drop down, essentially patrols.

She practices her fighting, especially with Gaara. She forces herself to read the identifying characteristics of more common Sunnydale demons. She learns CPR and first aid. Her foster mom's excited she's taking a proactive interest in skill like that and gets her enrolled in a wilderness first aid class, that apparently is part of a series that can get her first responder certification. She practices her aim with the water guns.

And then, one night when she can't sleep, she spots a humanoid figure lurking outside her house, off in the shadows.

Permalink Mark Unread

He isn't doing much, just lurking and watching.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hell.

Unlikely to be a friendly -

She opens her window (it makes no major noise) and scrambles down the side of the house. She's practiced this. She's pretty fast at it, and knows she doesn't have to get far before she can jump down and start running at spooky dude.

(She grabbed a stake-knife on her way out. She super doesn't intend to use it, but it might be good for intimidation.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He snaps his head around, growls, rushes her - yep, vampire -

Permalink Mark Unread

She twists, and tries to grab and throw him onto his back. She doesn't want to make noise - dusting him might be best even if she doesn't want to kill anyone - why is he hanging around her house that is suspicious -

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries and fails to wrench free of her grip, aims a swipe at her face -

Permalink Mark Unread

Grab his hand, try to flip him so she can pin him on his front - "What do you want," she hisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

His face transforms into the vampire snarl with a sickening wet crunch, and he growls at her as he tries to wrest himself free.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Answer me, asshole."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't play with your food, Slayer," he growls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you know I was here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll talk if you let me up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah fucking right. You'll talk or I'll dust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He growls and thrashes ineffectively for her neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Start: how did you know where I live."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do I know you won't dust me once I'm done talking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scout's honor. And the ability to hunt you down later if you do lie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you'll let me go when I tell you how I knew this was the Slayer's house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you finish answering my questions," she corrects.

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes a face, clearly under the impression that he almost got away with something very clever.  "I didn't know this was the Slayer's house.  My boss told me to check it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who's your boss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another vampire.  You wouldn't have heard of her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't count as answering my question."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she gets wind I told you how to find her she'd dust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can always skip town. Which would you rather: the person with the stake in front of you, or the one you can run from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates for a long moment.

"She goes by Vanessa," he says finally.  "Don't know her last name.  Tall, dark hair, hangs around in the necropolis in Sunnydale Memorial Park."  This being one of Sunnydale's unusual number of cemeteries.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. What were your instructions, exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hang around and try to figure out if you're the Slayer, bail if there's trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Who else works for her, and what're her plans once she has confirmation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He names a few names, says he doesn't know where they hang out, then: "I don't know, round up a bunch of vampires and send them after you, probably?  You're the Slayer, what do you think she wants with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she plans to threaten my family, that's different than sending a couple of vampires after me personally. Still, you've been helpful." She jumps off him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He scrambles to his feet and bolts.

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches him go.

She might have to warn her foster family about inviting weird strangers inside at night... Luckily it's just her for foster kids, she doesn't have any little siblings to worry about.

Permalink Mark Unread

(At the end of the night, Vanessa receives three out of four expected reports, and notes down the address to which the missing vampire was sent.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The next day she rounds up Kaylee and Tag over lunch and takes them to the library. To Giles and her friends: "We might have a problem. A vampire showed up outside of my house last night."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - shit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What exactly happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She recounts what happened, and the information she got.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is a master vampire in Sunnydale that knows where the Slayer lives," Giles summarizes darkly.  "We will have to move against this Vanessa quickly.  - Strictly speaking, I don't quite the authority to send you home to recover from your sudden 101 degree fever on my own recognizance, but I can certainly do so today without being immediately fired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they likely to do anything in the day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are not, but they may be expecting us to wait for nightfall, or at least for the end of the school day, to make a countermove - and it is not inconceivable that they have demonic allies capable of daywalking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I already let Gaara know, she can move freely, and is tracking my foster parents - I'm less worried about the house itself, I'll beat them home, and they work near each other..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“My thought was that I should convey you to the cemetery, if you feel you’re prepared to go on the attack.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm as sure as I can be he was telling the truth about who she was - I'm less sure about her location. He hesitated a bit right before it. There could be a trap there easily, or just a red herring."

Permalink Mark Unread

“That complicates things. If you’re comfortable leaving the house alone I won’t gainsay you, but do be careful coming home - not everything can be kept out by refusing it invitation.” He sighs. “I have a contact in the police department who I can tell to keep an eye out for this Vanessa figure, and I think we should investigate the cemetery in any case. But for now, we may have to play defensively.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even with just vampires, I'm betting the 'no invitation' thing doesn't stop them from setting fires."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I can try to help you arrange for an extended absence, if you want.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure skipping school - would help? And if we're not reading my foster parents in... They probably wouldn't buy whatever excuses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think the house, and your foster parents, will be safe without you, you're free to continue attending school.  As for telling them - I still prefer not to let the information propagate," he says.  "But if we don't resolve this quickly we may have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - An empty house is at less risk than the school, kind of, and I get home before them, and home alone I'd have fewer resources - I think the vampires are more concerned about not breaking the masquerade than I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee frowns.  "What exactly are they likely to actually do?  You said the - lurking guy - said something about rounding up a bunch of vampires to go after you, but he didn't sound like he had a head for tactics.  - If the situation were turned around, if we were the vampires and we'd figured out where the Slayer lived, what would our smartest move be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Hm. Ambush of some kind, or some way of forcing the situation to their advantage. Choosing the battlefield. So - lie in wait in my house, requires a demon ally or hitman or something that's stealthier than I'm perceptive, or.. Does the no-entry thing stop them from setting houses on fire?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ideally I'd stop here to look for a reliable account of vampiric arson, but - I can't see why it would stop them from setting a fire from outside.  It's not a tactic they use with any frequency, but then they wouldn't often have reason to.  ...Come to think of it I'm also fairly certain they can throw things through windows, as long as no part of their body crosses the threshold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Don't have to do much to get people fleeing their house."

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs.  "If their main advantage over us is that they know where you live - we may have to relocate you and your parents until they make a move.  And I am somewhat loath to do that without informing them of why.  Certainly if you're not comfortable with trying to get them out of the house under false pretenses..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not, and I think it's more likely to backfire than just telling them."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "I can let you handle the explanations if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having an adult they can go to might help but I should probably sit them down this evening to explain, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish you luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Of course.  I'm going to get in touch with my police contact, and you should probably get ready for your next classes, if you are to keep up appearances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Might be best..."

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the day passes uneventfully.

Kaylee finds Nausicaa on the bus home.  "If you want I can come over with my parents when you talk to your foster parents?  So there's more people in the know there than just you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might help a lot, yeah, I don't know how seriously they'll take me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell my parents to head over whenever you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They usually get back around five-thirty..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can have my folks bring over dinner," she suggests, laughing weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might get it to go over easier, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts an arm around Nausicaa's shoulder.  "Worried about how they'll take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of, yeah. I mean - what if they decide to stop fostering me, and I get shipped off to another city?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really awful that they can just - decide to do that to you.  I get why, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah. I'll be eighteen soon enough, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully my parents can talk them into keeping you around, if they need to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully, yeah. Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Of course.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a good friend, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush.  "Thanks.  You're pretty great too, Nausicaa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We make quite a pair, then."

And onwards to home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee fills her parents in as soon as she gets home.

"...so we're bringing Nausicaa's parents into the fold," she finishes, "and she thinks it would go better if there were some more adults there who could corroborate her story.  Everyone should be safe but we have to do it fast, like tonight - "

Rob nods, and starts work on a nice portable casserole which will hopefully help ease the foster parents' initiation, and that evening they all three show up at Nausicaa's house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's pacing. Her parents have been home only thirty minutes. Luckily there were no ambushes. She opens the door in a rush (after checking who it is), and welcomes them inside, bouncing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We brought a casserole," says Rob.

Kaylee sidles up to Nausicaa and murmurs, "Did you want to jump right in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Maybe not? I can... Ease them into it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods, and relays this to her parents, and the six of them settle down to dinner.  It goes peacefully, at least at first, everyone making the sort of conversation one makes when families meet through their kids.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And Nausicaa, near the end, eases them into the 'superpowers and demons and vampires oh my' conversation.

...It. Goes.

She won't be getting grounded, or de-fostered, but her foster parents are still debating if they really need to get a hotel room, or if they should call the police, or...

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena will reluctantly try to convince Nausicaa's parents that calling the police would end worse for the police than anyone else, but that even if they do they should stay in a motel for a few days regardless.

Permalink Mark Unread

...They're not fully convinced, but, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's that, then.

The group heads toward the library next lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa would like to flop. Just spend the day rolling around, flopping from place to place. Unfortunately this is socially unacceptable, so she parkours to school again and then walks like a normal person who has their life together when in the building.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Holding up okay?" Kaylee asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't given into the temptation to roll everywhere yet, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's something.  You need a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hugs are always appreciated."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"You're a really good hugger," she says, clinging to Kaylee and rocking a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thanks," Kaylee says.  "You're very huggable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try! I'll be sad if all this exercise makes me less huggably squishy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.  "Fingers crossed."

She and Nausicaa convene with Tag outside the library, then head inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a bit subdued going in - but not as bad as earlier - and she waves to Giles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good afternoon.  Are your parents safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They were when I left. We're staying in a motel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to hear it.  You've been making excellent progress in your combat abilities and you were clearly not unskilled to start with; do you feel comfortable going on a scouting mission?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think that'd be a relief right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "I think it would be prudent to investigate the Sunnydale Memorial Park, just in case.  I can cover for your absence if you would like to leave and make your way there immediately, or convey you there this afternoon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- That's tough. Uh, Kaylee, opinion?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm.  You might attract more attention if you're lurking around the cemetery in the middle of the day..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And - we don't really want that, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One can be subtle enough at noon, but yes, it would be best to avoid," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not the best at subtle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This afternoon, then.  On a related note, I took the liberty of purchasing you a ski mask," which he produces from behind the library desk.  "It may be prudent to obfuscate clues to your identity when you're operating in the capacity of the Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That is kind of ridiculously suspicious if anyone sees me in a way something like a masquerade mask won't be, but yeah, good idea. I might go out in Spiderman cosplay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would imagine concealing your face in public is inherently suspicious regardless of the exact method, but, ah, as you prefer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One I look like a bank robber, the other like a nerd."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that's fair.  Do you in fact have a, ah, Spider-Man costume?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Don't get too many chances to wear it. This should be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not for very long, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More meant the costume, I know vampires are serious business."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad.  Your friend is keeping an eye on your parents, yes?  Is there anything else you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Does your super secret agent conspiracy have like - I don't know, witness protection? Funds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately there is little affordance for giving discretionary funding directly to the Slayer, but I'd be happy to be a point of contact with the Council for you if you find you need anything.  We have no witness protection programs either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Maybe something to work on? It sounds like a useful thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I rather agree," he mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See, I'm good at this admin stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall attempt to have you promoted," he says, adjusting his glasses.  "In the meantime, are there any further preparations you would like to undertake before your mission this afternoon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Can't really think of anything. Think I should go out in costume?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you should have something to conceal your identity, at any rate," he says.  "Does it restrict your movement?  Can you see well in it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spiderman doesn't have a cape, does he?  Capes always seemed like a recipe for disaster to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - do forgive me if you've thought of all of this already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No cape! He's the wall crawler. Doesn't restrict my movement - made it out of a gymnast's outfit, and I modified the way the mask's set up so I can see already. Isn't, like, as good as plain eyes, so might want to swap to lenses before going out at night in it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag gives a thumbs up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In that case, it sounds like as good a choice as anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Thanks for the disguise idea, G-man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what I'm here for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're a good team. All of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I admit, the conspiracy is rather growing on me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to have a support network."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should come up with a team name."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - if you want, I suppose..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, don't make that face. Promise I'll let someone else pic the name, how about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't necessarily think you'd choose an unusually inept one, it's just... not something I would've thought of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles a little, affectionately.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Team names are important for morale!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you're not wrong!  I don't have any good ideas though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm Spiderman - but he's not really canonically part of any team long-term..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're going all-in on the Spiderman thing, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Spiderman's great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.  "We could be Team Slayer.  Catchy, straightforward, gets the point across..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bit on the nose. Team Spider sounds creepier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...is that a point in its favor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You lack an appropriate appreciation for creepiness and spiders, I suspect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's possible we have different ideas of appropriateness."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag shrugs one shoulder.  "Sounds as good as anything else to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hah! Yes!" She grins. "So... Anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think so!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should probably get to class soon then..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lunch is wrapping up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

And off they scatter for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

The day passes with nothing catching on fire, and then it's time for Nausicaa to get into costume and scout out Sunnydale Memorial Park.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay so she's still not here for the 'killing people' thing but she is jazzed about getting to fight crime dressed up as Spiderman.

Here she is, scouting, telling anyone who asks that she lost a bet!

Permalink Mark Unread

Once she's inside the actual graveyard she doesn't get a lot of questions.  There's basically no one around.

The catacomb is, per catacombs, dark and gloomy.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll look around, then. Here vampires vampires vampires...

Permalink Mark Unread

There vampire!

They see each other simultaneously; the vampire licks his lips and charges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow these guys are kind of dumb.

Nausicaa bounces off a wall, wishes she could actually shoot web, and goes for a flying tackle.

Permalink Mark Unread

These guys are kind of dumb; flying tackle straightforwardly succeeds, and now she has a vampire pinned.

" - Slayer?" he chokes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm your friendly neighborhood Spiderman," she says sarcastically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a good vampire," he lies, transparently.  "I only drink from animals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm kind of curious, do I look like I was born yesterday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, you've got a mask on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, wise guy. I don't believe you. I know you know I don't believe you. But I'll play nice. I'm looking for someone. A Vanessa, rumored to hang out around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at her blankly.  "I'm the only vampire who lives down here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the cemetery period? No one else comes by?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "This place is my territory, I've never heard of a Vanessa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where would I find out about more vampires, then? Any hangouts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "If you let me go I can lead you to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Close enough to honest.

She hops back, chirps, "Glad you see it my way!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He climbs to his feet.  "There's a couple of clubs that cater to demons in this town.  Vampires usually hang out at a place called the Line and Sinker."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's it at?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's disguised as a warehouse - " he gives the address.  "It's kind of a private club, though - but I can get in, ask around, report back?" he suggests hopefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And slip out the back. Or alert your buddies about me. No, the address is enough." Gaara's a grouch but a lot less suspicious than a human or slayer, for instance. "Thank you for your time!" And, leaning forward, voice still cheery: "Kill any humans, and I'll know!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What am I supposed to eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean I said kill. And humans. Animals, consensual and non-deadly encounters with people who're into that, steal discarded blood from blood banks..."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at her skeptically.  "There's humans who want to get eaten by vampires?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kink! It's totally a thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What am I supposed to do, walk up to humans and bars and blow the masquerade just in case they're - into that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm assuming other vampires have figured this out at some point. Ask around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll try the blood bank thing," he says grumpily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  The password to the Line and Sinker - promise not to tell anyone where you got all this information?"  He's not in a great bargaining position but he's gotta ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course! If I didn't keep my promises that'd make bargaining really hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

That was easy.  "It's Lecter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for your contribution to society," she says cheerily. " - I'm in your house basically aren't I. Uh, anything else that seems likely to be super relevant? Then I'll get out of your hair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a really weird Slayer," he says.  "Uh, I don't know, you might look sketchy if you don't order anything but most of the things on the menu have human blood or meat in them, someone might ask you who referred you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a weird person in general! And I'll blame Vanessa. If it gets her in trouble, great. Can vampires have horrible inconvenient allergies or, like, religious food processing rules? Or I'll just claim to be, I don't know, an evil vegetarian demon." Taking Gaara with her and having the demon do the 'sand seeping blood' thing should be convincing at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean are you gonna stay here implicitly threatening to stake me through the whole brainstorming process or..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't stake you, unless you like swear to drown the world in the blood of the innocents I guess but you don't strike me as that kind of dumb. If you're not getting any bright ideas, I'll head out, mausoleums aren't my brainstorming style."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have any ideas."  And he's not up for standing around poking holes in hers, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hopefully won't see you again, then!" And parkouring off, because parkour is Great.

Permalink Mark Unread

The gang gets together outside at lunchtime the next day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa is restless and therefore kind of bouncy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey.  Any news?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. A lot." She relays what happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you and Gaara gonna try to infiltrate this Line and Sinker place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was my thought, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I don't have to tell you to be careful.  But."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be super careful. Cross my heart."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and gives Nausicaa a little sideways-hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got a plan?  A cover story and a, a non-sketchy way to start asking questions and shit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The outline of one, but it could use refinement. I'm new in town. Got recommended by Vanessa a while back, but we drifted apart and now I'm trying to reconnect. Might position myself as Gaara's arm-candy, in case anyone notices I'm human. Probably will pretend to be vapid and silly. Gaara's gonna lean on her blood-demon heritage - maybe we can do two birds with one stone, she says she's looking for her mystery grandparent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe, but do blood demons have anything to do with vampires?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of us actually knows that! Giles might? Gaara could say she's exhausted other avenues?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, if you're going to pretend to be - arm candy - then maybe Gaara should be the one to say Vanessa recommended the place to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  - Do you know if Sand Demons have any taste for - human flesh?"  She shivers a little.  "I guess she could say she gets it from the blood demon side, since no one knows what kind of demon it is exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We may want to double check that, like, every known demon associated with spontaneous human blood isn't famously not inclined to eat humans, but I might be being paranoid.  - You know, if Gaara just constantly creates human blood in sand form vampires may want to kidnap her to feed from.  This place especially, if they're trying to keep up a steady supply to sell to lots of vampires at once.  Is it human blood or animal blood or just, you know, blood-not-otherwise-specified, somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- She has a weird sense for bloods and the default spontaneously appearing stuff is demon blood, which at least smells gross. If she's killed someone with her sand she can push their blood out, but, like, she doesn't have to do that. We weren't thinking she'd be dripping blood places, anyways, just maybe make clear that's the kind of part-demon she is..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd be demonstrating the capability, and it might be a capability that they want access to, though.  But yeah they might not like demon blood.  We'd have to hit the books or ask Giles probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me check my notes..."

She pulls out a notebook and starts leafing through it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's probably a bunch I'm not thinking of, too, but - I don't want to leave this too long. Not while my family's in danger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we are kind of on a deadline.  I'll let you know if I come up with any great ideas or catastrophic failure modes this afternoon, but I'm not gonna ask you to delay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.

"...It doesn't seem like vampires usually go in for demon blood any more than animal blood, for what that's worth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the ones I've talked to seem to really hate animal blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No luck persuading anyone to - keep kosher?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got last guy to promise to try discarded blood from blood banks. And suggested finding people who're into that, but he seemed skeptical."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Are they - anything like Mr. Giles said they would be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They honestly seem to kind of suck at lying so far, and the two I've talked to were - kind of didn't feel committed? Like, evil version of someone who does volunteer work because it'll look good on their resume. Gaara was more dedicated to being an asshole."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tag doesn't laugh but he makes the "tss" sound through slightly parted teeth that sometimes indicates dry amusement in very low-key people.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "I - don't know what to do with that analogy, really."  She giggles weakly.  "Fingers crossed, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe if we make being evil really inconvenient? But, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I vote we run this all by Giles in case he has some domain expertise, but I'm not sure I'm gonna think of anything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, same."

Permalink Mark Unread

And accordingly, they convene in the library after school.

Permalink Mark Unread

She explains to Giles what she did to the others, including their discussions about infiltrating the club.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I will want to discuss the vampire you left alive in the near future, but that can wait.  I think your plan is a good one, assuming you trust in your own and your friend's acting ability."

He sighs a little (clearly not at her).  "...I would like to suggest you go in with backup but obviously options are thin on the ground.  I am at least happy to offer my services as a, ah, getaway driver."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm probably a way better actor than Gaara, honestly, but as long as she doesn't have to emote away from 'intense and kind of scary' I think she'll do fine. Would getaway driver increases chances of us being seen suspicious? Just, a car lurking outside might get noticed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps a few blocks away?  I have," he retrieves an object from his pocket, "a pair of prepaid cell phones.  You may use this one to get ahold of me in an emergency if you need to, and to bid me meet you outside the, ah, vampire pub, if you need to make a quick getaway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works. Thanks, G-man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are quite welcome, Miss Uzun," he says a bit dryly.  "I would suggest you not call me at all during the operation until you need me to pick you up, so I can come running as soon as I hear the phone ring.  The other phone's number is speed dial one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smart, yeah. And we'll leave on foot if everything goes well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."  He gives a thumbs up.  "Have you filled Gaara in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This morning, but haven't had a chance since."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  “Guess our job’s done, then.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Good luck.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, guys. I'll try not to start an all-out bar fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa smiles, and after a bit more brainstorming goes to fill in Gaara.

Then, that night, her first bar crawl. She's doing her best 'ditzy blonde', hanging on Gaara's arm and overall acting a bit altered-consciousness. Probably she'll read as 'gold digger, not actually a ditz' to anyone who sees through her - she's done double-layered lies before, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

The place does, indeed, look like a warehouse.  If she walks around the perimeter she'll find an unlocked side door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara takes the lead, opening the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a night janitor leaning on a mop just inside.  He startles a little, or appears to, when he sees them.  "This is private property," he says.  "Off limits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're looking for Lecter."

Permalink Mark Unread

He sizes Gaara up for a moment, then beckons them both inside.

He leads them to an ordinary gray door set into the adjacent wall, which he unlocks to reveal a spiral staircase.  "Just downstairs," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spiral staircase leads to another door, this one dark wood, which leads into a moodily-lit bar clustered with vampires and other humanoids.  The bar must be soundproofed - as soon as they open the door they hear murmurs of conversation and ominous heavy metal music.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their attempts at an aesthetic are tiresome. She presumes one goes to the bar for most any initial business?

Permalink Mark Unread

She presumes correctly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll make a show of contemplating the list of specials on the wall, then getting a drink (they'd agreed it was for the best, despite Nausicaa's distaste for the whole matter. Gaara doesn't really... Care, about already dead people) and lounging with Nausicaa on her arm, surveying the room and speaking to her friend in low tones. Mostly Nausicaa is doing a very good impression of someone silly and infatuated. Gaara finds it disconcerting, but hiding emotional reactions in favor of intensity isn't hard for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually a vampire settles down next to them.  "This your first time?" he asks Gaara.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're a bit new to the area," she says with a giggle and a flutter of her eyelashes and a lean against Gaara.

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks Gaara up and down.  "You're a sand demon, right?  I didn't think you guys usually went in for the blood sucking thing."  He sips his vividly crimson drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tema's mixed. Quite exotic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Vampire snorts.  "How'd you hear about this place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at making friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts a hand on Nausicaa's arm, and smiles. It's probably intensely creepy. "From a woman named Vanessa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That name sounds familiar actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is pretty common."

Permalink Mark Unread

Vampire rolls his eyes.  "I mean - tall pale woman, long straight dark hair," he gestures about halfway down his back, "throaty laugh, very into her own mysteriousness?  If it's the same lady I've seen her hanging around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very. She's been stringing us along a little. Said she'd help us find Tema's grandfather, and, well. Obsessed with her own mysteriousness is definitely how I'd describe her. She likes to refuse to meet with people in person. Makes talking hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.  "Maybe you can corner her here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be ideal, yeah. Feels like a place she might like to brood."

Permalink Mark Unread

Vampire snickers a little, but he seems to be getting bored of her; he turns his attention back to his drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, leans against Gaara, and starts casting her gaze around for someone who looks like they could use (and would get usefully flustered at) a pretty girl flirting with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, here's somebody who blushes and smiles when she catches his eye.  He's not a vampire, either - his grin reveals needle-thin teeth, black and translucent like the fangs of a deep-sea viperfish.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tells Gaara she's going to stretch her legs, and moseys on over nearby him, flashing him a mischievous grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

He ducks his head and blushes Even More and grins, and gives a little wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey there," she says, smiling at him and coming up.

Permalink Mark Unread

He suppresses a giggle.  "Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mind if I sit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!  - I mean, no, I don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no he's cute.

She sits next to him, leans into him a bit - not in his personal space, but he could easily close the gap. "What's someone as cute as you doing alone here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well if he was blushing before, he's positively incandescent now.  "Well, I don't really like - hunting - or, oh, am I supposed to flirt back, I don't really know how to flirt - I'm sorry I probably sound really dumb and goofy right now - "

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at him. "Flirting's appreciated! But I'm fine with honest conversation."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins.  "Well.  I don't really like hunting.  I'm a cannibal - I mean, I eat humans, the kind of demon I am eats humans, and that's what people call demons who eat humans even though I think cannibalism technically means eating things that are the same species as you?  But, ugh, I'm getting off track - I eat humans but any time I try to hunt them I always wind up feeling really bad for whoever I kill, and then someone told me about this place - I guess it's not really any better for the humans," he giggles sheepishly, "but I feel better about it.  I guess you could make the argument that if I eat here I never risk having to kill more people in order to cover up the first guy I killed?  But that seems like kind of a reach."  He shrugs one shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably isn't better for them," she says with a fake-casual shrug. Also aaaahhhhhhh this is really stretching her ability to lie, obligate cannibals who feel guilty about that but in the way non-vegetarians sometimes go 'but cows are kind of cute' hadn't occurred to her... She hums. "Do you know if, like, the human needs to have had a brain ever? Maybe you could work on - I don't know, cloning people? Vat meat?" Kind of a creepy thought, but.

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs.  "I think that's a bit out of my league, honestly.  I don't see why it wouldn't work, though!  If someone figures it out I'll probably switch."

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't punch him until he becomes more concerned, how does she handle this!!!

"I'll poke my biologist friends," she says with a thin little laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.  "Sounds like a project!  - We've been talking about me this whole time, what about you?  What brings you here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does! And I'm helping a friend look for someone, but, well, can't do that all night, can I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that woman you came with who you're helping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Long story, but we're looking for a Vanessa - long dark hair, pale, kind of tall, super smug. Personally, I'm not in a rush, but." She laughs a bit. "I don't think bars are my friend's scene."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah, I've seen her around."  He narrows his eyes pensively.  "If I'm thinking of the same person - she used to come around every Friday, but she hasn't shown up lately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, thanks!" She'll let the conversation draw on a while longer, nudging it around to Vanessa and the people she's with, but not making it too much like herself, or like she's interrogating him. This is a flirty conversation, he's just helping her of his own accord!

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll identify a few people who tend to hang around her, including one who he's seen around once or twice even after Vanessa herself stopped showing up.  "Walter Galbraith," he says.  "You can't miss him, he's the guy who's always immaculately dressed and wears an eyepatch."  He leans in conspiratorially: "I don't think he's actually missing an eye, he just does it to look cool.  If you keep coming back you'll probably catch him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I can't imagine why I wouldn't - the company's excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush.  "Um, can I ask - what species are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You sure may." And she names a species - mostly solitary, so there's no real communities of them, perfectly human passing, eat ambient emotions and grow sick if they eat food...

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "I don't think I've heard of them - I guess if you're solitary I wouldn't've.  I'm - well, you probably can't pronounce it - " he makes a sound from deep in his chest like the basso-vibrato growl of a cassowary.  "It basically means acid-fang-people.  We have a whole extra set of vocal cords," he slaps his chest, "so we can make a bunch of sounds no one else can."  He giggles a little: "we make no evolutionary sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'd have a lot of trouble resisting the temptation to taunt humans with that." She shakes her head, meets Gaara's eyes. "Though I think my friend's getting restless now. I'll see you around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.  "See you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wave, and off to Gaara. They make their way out soon after, taking the scenic route until they're sure no one's following them (Gaara has her sand spread finely to use for sensing) before cutting over to Giles' car.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets them in, and drives away.

"No trouble, I take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"None at all! Vanessa hasn't been there in a while, and didn't get her hideout, but one of her hangers-on still comes around regularly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, congratulations on completing your first mission unscathed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! I'll probably need to go back again to find the dude, but I've got an excuse now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Made a friend, and people bought our reason for looking for Vanessa. And got it established I'm a solitary emotion-eater. So, reasonable for me to hang around crowded areas without eating."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "That does sound like a cover story that will serve you well.  - Is your, ah, contact, also a solitary emotion-eater, by any chance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Ah no. Though I'm adding 'human vat meat' to lists, apparently there're obligate cannibals who feel bad about it - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"...of course there are, how could I not have guessed.  In your estimation, will you be in any danger from this person if they discover that you are a human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, he doesn't hunt. Felt pretty sincere about that. Worst thing he might do is rat me out, but I think if I was there I could talk him out of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "It will probably be useful to have a contact in the demonic underworld.  - you can probably anticipate that I also think it's a better idea to have one who isn't a vampire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably, yeah. Vamps don't seem all too interested in flirty girls anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

If there's nothing else to discuss, he'll convey her to her family's motel room.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be conveyed.

She's a bit clingy with Kaylee the next school day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Side hugs and shoulder rubs.  "Did it go okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wibbly hand. "Got what we came in for. Just. Kind of upsetting, even the assholes aren't black and white..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wanna talk about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just... There was this guy. Kind of nice. Pleasant to talk to. Obligate cannibal and felt kind of vaguely guilty about it in a way that makes me feel bad for not being vegetarian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh jeez... for what it's worth, I think there is probably a moral difference between eating animals and eating humans.  But."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Just. The attitude."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze.  "You said vaguely guilty...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know animals aren't like humans, but... He's probably thinking humans aren't like demons, you know? So, like, just, seeing something similar."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "That makes sense.  He sounds like - a really tough person to have to talk to.  Did you wind up having to tell him you were a human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. He asked what I was, but I said an emotion-eating demon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't even know if that's better or worse."

"Let me know if there's anything you need, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Thanks, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are friends for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apparently helping me feel better!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

The day passes without incident; soon it's time to parkour home.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is, at least, one of the highlights of her new powers.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's just beginning to descend a lengthy serpentine ramp by jumping from railing to railing when a stranger vaults over the wall and tackles her.

Permalink Mark Unread

What the hell.

She twists, tries to regain her feet and throw whoever off her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She manages to send him staggering backward toward the wall he just vaulted over, but he regains his balance and rushes her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks to the side, trying to grab his arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

He reacts fast, slipping around her instead of continuing to charge her, and rotating the momentum from his dodge into a spinning kick.

Permalink Mark Unread

That means he's on one foot when she ducks under his kick and tackles him.

Permalink Mark Unread

As she hits, he goes so limp that it's like all the bones in his body have vanished.  Exactly like that, in fact - and then he slithers out of her grip like an eerie human-shaped cephalopod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ew.

As much as she wants to beat him up, she doesn't know what type of demon he is, and should probably get help...

She starts trying to put distance between them.

Permalink Mark Unread

He snaps up off the ground like a slap bracelet and takes off after her.  He, apparently, is also quite good at parkour.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not perfectly capable of keeping ahead of him, which brings up the question: is he immune to being stabbed with a wooden stake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not so immune that he doesn't try to bend his torso out of the way like some kind of weird slug!  The stake ends up sticking him where his lung would be.  Also, the snug athletic wear he's wearing seems to actually be part of his skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe technically naked demon for extra creep factor.

She'll yank on the stake but if it doesn't come out she won't get herself trapped pulling on it. And she has other weapons, besides - Giles might disapprove of her bringing weapons to school but Nausicaa is fully aware of how to keep teachers from finding a pocket knife. Like the one she's slashing at him with right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets cut up pretty bad.  He's not bleeding but it might be that whatever he is just doesn't bleed.  He tries to get his arms wrapped around hers, or around her neck - it's a bit like wrestling with a couple anacondas.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep stabs might be the way to go.

She's not really getting tired at least, and he seems less willing to punch her than she's willing to cut him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will discover a compact set of internal organs running along his spine that, when hit, will cause him to emit a pained sort of squelching sound, and try to disengage and lope away.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll follow at a safe-ish distance. She wants to know where he's going, not bring him down - he's too dangerous for 'interrogating him' to be safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

He manages to lurk pretty effectively despite it being the middle of the afternoon, sticking to back alleys, and once he thinks he's out of sight, all the detail on his skin and clothes dissolves into smooth shiny grey.  He curls up on the ground, pinching a couple of his deep chest wounds shut, and stays motionless for a few minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lurks so she can just barely see him. Takes note of his possibly true form.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently, as well as making its skin look like clothing, this sort of demon can give itself natural pockets!  He takes a cell phone out of one, from right where it would be on his leg if he were wearing skinny jeans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Creepy.

She inches closer, to try and overhear whatever call. Ideally she'd be able to see his phone keyboard, but she knows that's not likely...

Permalink Mark Unread

His mouth and jaw and neck all turn human-shaped while the rest of him stays shiny and grey, and he begins muttering into the phone.  She can make out "Slayer" and "stabbed" and a disdainful "fuck y-" that signals the descent of his side of the conversation into what sounds like an irritable I-didn't-sign-up-for-this tirade: "look", "my fight, Van-", "not a fucking vampire", "lunatic."

He hangs up, stands, and transforms into a frizzy-haired and much darker-skinned woman before stalking away irritably down the alley.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he was likely hired by Vanessa. And he knows she's the Slayer.

She follows him, a bit more cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

He, or perhaps now she, emerges from the other end of the alley and gets into a car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, crap, she won't be able to follow her as easily - though given Sunnydale traffic she's gonna try her best.

She memorizes as much as she can about the make, model, and plates.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is brown, and of a tiresomely practical style.  The shapeshifter begins driving away; she'll be able to keep up for a little while, but once they get into residential areas the traffic lightens enough for the car to get away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she knows an approximate residential area... Which honestly doesn't narrow down the search much. Crap.

She starts heading for school. Giles should be staying after...

Permalink Mark Unread

He is in fact in the Sunnydale High library when she checks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So! G-man, potential problem!" she calls out once she's sure no one else is there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh dear, another one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much! Some weird shapeshifter attacked me. I stabbed him until he ran off, then he got on the phone with I'm guessing Vanessa. Knew I was the Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least it wasn't some third player... what manner of shapeshifter, exactly?  Is there anything you could use to identify or track him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She lists everything she knows.

Permalink Mark Unread

As she goes over the shapeshifter's discernible anatomy, he retrieves a few demonological references and asks clarifying questions about things like flesh consistency and interstitial fluids.

"Ah, here we are," he says.  "Commonly called ragdoll demons, their name for themselves has phonemes we'd be hard-pressed to produce - "

He notes down the make and model and license plate number.  "I can give this information to my police contact and see if she can track him down."

"Do you have any hypothesis as to how he found you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not. Really? He didn't talk to me, just rushed me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He taps his cheek pensively.  "You haven't been doing anything obviously superhuman with any regularity, have you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No? ...Okay I'm keeping the parkour in human ranges but people might not realize that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose if a new teenage girl appears on the Hellmouth and publicly exhibits even human-realistic impressive athletic ability, it's an obvious sort of guess.  I think we have to assume that Vanessa has positively identified Nausicaa Uzun as the Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah. Crap. We'll have to - try to stop her faster I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And make you less findable in the meantime.  If they can't locate your motel room, it might be a good time to arrange that extended absence from school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would give me more time to look, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes.  Can your parents be persuaded to corroborate the story that you've got a bad bout of flu?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? I mean, they get the vampires are a threat..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you guess, if they don't, the extent and nature of the action they are likely to take against you if you simply stop attending school?  The faculty may not bother contacting the police, for example, but will they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "No. They won't. They'll probably just be concerned and worried and a bit frustrated."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "It's a fallback plan, then.  I will be happy to offer you safe harbor during the day if necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think it'll get that bad. Still - guess I should head to the motel and talk to them? Uh, should I head back here or call you or what once I have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It may be best for you to stay away from campus for the time being.  It is one of the first places they will guess that a Slayer with a public identity will be.  You can call me, if you like, or we can reconvene elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call with fall-back meeting place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, and gives her his home address.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives him the address and front desk number for the motel, and says - "We probably shouldn't meet at your house if it's pretty likely I've drawn notice. Might be being followed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Point.  If need be, I can come to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might work better, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck, then.  I can fill your friends in tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

She heads back to the motel. Talks to her foster parents. They're not comfortable with her taking an extended leave without a doctor's note - but they'll back up her story.

Nausicaa calls Giles that evening, right after dinner, to let him know.

Permalink Mark Unread

They make plans to make plans, in person rather than over the phone.

The school buys Nausicaa's story without incident.  Kaylee and Tag find Giles at lunchtime, and he fills them in.

"You should not be seen to change your routines," he says, "in response to Nausicaa's absence.  It would be obvious to anyone watching who knows she is the Slayer that you are good friends and therefore potential targets, and our enemies most likely do know that she is the Slayer."

Then, after school, it's time for Giles and Nausicaa and pointedly no one else to meet up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's there. She walks and takes the bus like a normal person, being more careful to not be followed closer to her motel.

Permalink Mark Unread

He meets her at the door.  "For obvious reasons I am not in the habit of verbally inviting people into my apartment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha." And she steps in past him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make yourself at home," he says.  "Are you hungry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could use a snack? Had a longer trip than I'm used to..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Help yourself to anything in the refrigerator."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does, then: "So, figured anything out about mystery dude yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No similar cars have been reported stolen, so your shapeshifter is probably the legal owner.  The identity associated with the plate is actually a woman, but from the story you told me it sounds like they can change that as easily as anything else.  But - my police contact is reluctant to help us hunt down anyone who isn't associated with a crime the department knows about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's really reasonable. Which - okay so no help tracking them down, but - I don't think they'll come after me on their own? And I think then best bet is taking down this Vanessa."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "We have names and descriptions for several of her associates, and we know that at least one of them still frequents the Line and Sinker.  You've shown yourself to be adept at following people stealthily.  What would you say to a few more demon pub excursions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent.  Now, if they know your name, it's possible they also know your face - it may be wiser to observe from somewhere out of sight, rather than attempt a second infiltration.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yeah. Bet even most demons don't look up too often..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One can hope.  Although the colors on your disguise are rather - attention-grabbing.  It might be prudent to look into something darker for discreet work like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooooh I can make a dark Spiderman costume."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Ah, yes, one of those.  How quickly do you think you can do so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Without school? A few days, so I should probably hang out in a hoodie and bandana at first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like an effective stopgap.  ...It occurs to me that we don't know when if ever the Line and Sinker closes.  But we won't need to keep watch during daylight hours, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I can just sleep in the day now that I'm not in school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed.  When are you prepared to start your stakeout?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could do tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll stand by for you again, if that's agreeable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is. Thanks, G-man."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course.  Do you still prefer me to come running as soon as my phone rings, or will you want to be able to keep lines of communication open?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lines of communication, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well.  I think that's everything.  We'll move out tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha."

Permalink Mark Unread

That night, and indeed the next several nights, find her perched on top of an adjacent warehouse, watching the disguised cannibals come and go.  She recognizes the boy she met there on her last visit - he's a frequent visitor, showing up almost every day - but it's a couple days before Vanessa's henchman shows himself: Walter Galbraith, dressed in a black pinstripe suit over a vest and silk dress shirt that are both bright red, with an eyepatch over his right eye that rumor has it he does not actually need.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's finished her black spider suit by now so is lurking in style. Also wow evil aesthetic much.

She follows him when he leaves. Stealthily. Like a very large spider.

Permalink Mark Unread

He moves at a leisurely pace toward his black and stylish car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right.

She texts Giles information about the car, as well as a grainy picture.

Permalink Mark Unread

heading north?  will pick you up and follow

Permalink Mark Unread

She confirms the car's direction, then updates Giles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giles' car brakes next to her warehouse, and the passenger side door opens.

Permalink Mark Unread

She slides in.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes off in pursuit.

"Once we get out of the industrial district we can follow closer," he says.  "I imagine we'll have some time, then, before he realizes he's being followed.  Your crossbow is in the backseat, if it comes to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's hoping, too." Still, she acquires the crossbow. Not that she's intending to use it for anything other than intimidation or shooting out tires.

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows, at a distance - even outside of the sprawl of warehouses traffic is light enough that he doesn't want to get too close.

Galbraith leads them through a residential district, toward a small graveyard on the opposite side of town from the Memorial Park.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll follow him into it on foot if Giles doesn't object, though she keeps out of his sight as best she can. She wants to know where in it he's going...

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets her go.  "Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

Black Spidey Suit serves her well; she manages to escape notice by even vampire vision.  Galbraith strides importantly into what looks like the stone entrance to a burial vault.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's probably not going to manage to follow him closely enough to see what he does in there while staying in the realm of 'safe following distance'... But she can go over every inch of it later, and at least try to get a glimpse, either through the door if he leaves it open or through one of the high windows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately he closes the door behind him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She scrambles for a window.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll see him open a stone trapdoor designed to look like a weathered old tile, descend a ladder, and let the trapdoor close behind him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a point of memorizing where the trapdoor was, then heads back to Giles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any news?" he asks as the car door thunks shut behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relays what she saw.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm," he hmms.  "That could be Vanessa's hideout or Galbraith's - but in either case we can return here with more supplies and conduct a proper investigation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. And backup, like Gaara."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."  He notes down the address and starts driving away.

Permalink Mark Unread

And if he needs nothing else from her, she should go find Gaara.

Maybe after sleeping...

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not. "I'll take you home and you can get some rest," he says affectionately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Thanks, G-man."

Permalink Mark Unread

Supplies are gathered, plans are made, and the next day - while the sun's out, so Galbraith won't have anywhere to bolt to - it's time for a break-in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Gaara are ready to go. Gaara's taking point on scouting, being sneakier than Nausicaa, while Nausicaa hangs back a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara will find the cemetery, and Galbraith's crypt in particular, deserted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then time to use her sand to investigate the trap door.

Permalink Mark Unread

It blends in remarkably well with the stone floor, but if you know it's there, and roughly where it is, and happen to be made of sand, it's not hard to find it.  It latches from the inside, but it's not airtight: she can get through with time and patience.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has those, fortunately, and it's presently the morning. She goes slowly enough to be quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a ladder, leading down perhaps ten or fifteen feet to a small complex of secret chambers.  It's not pitch-black but it's dimly lit enough for further scouting to hinge on the quality of Gaara's night vision.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara is a sand demon not a night demon.

She'll step to the side and let Nausicaa take point, though she keeps her sand spread out, finely suspended in the air, to substitute for vision. It risks people noticing there's a lot of grit in the air, but it'll give them warning of things even past their line of sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa is probably not a night demon but has very good night vision nonetheless.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are a couple doors off of the little entrance hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Presumably her sand can slip through the cracks - her sensing isn't fine-tuned like this, but she'll get an idea if there's anything moving beyond them, and of vague room or corridor size out to about twenty feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Each door leads to another little room, not much bigger than the entrance hall.  A couple of them have closets, in turn.  It's a small place.  If Galbraith is here (and that secret door didn't look like it was latchable from the outside) he's not disturbing the air very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll start very quietly with the rooms nearest the secret door - Nausicaa to the right, Gaara to the left.

Permalink Mark Unread

Both doors creak open, ominously - and very loudly actually -

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey, she'd wanted to batter the door down and shout a challenge. Gaara's the one who insisted on stealth.

Looks like it's bombastic Nausicaa time!

Door can get thrown open dramatically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just as Nausicaa throws open her door to reveal an empty room, the third door, the one neither of them checked, gets thrown open by Galbraith -

 - his face contorts into a vampire snarl, he glances between them for a split second and goes for Nausicaa -

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa ducks out of the way and kicks him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He staggers, but keeps his footing - draws a sharp, wave-bladed knife and goes in for a stab -

Permalink Mark Unread

She dodges, and jabs him in the ribs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hunches and growls and strikes with another lunging arcing stab.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Gaara's sand comes down on him from above like a ton of squishy bricks.

Permalink Mark Unread

He curses and thrashes and collapses to the ground.  He loses his grip on the knife and it spins away across the stone floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

She summons more, aiming to trap him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa picks up the knife, says, "We're not going to kill you. We have questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With respect to the people who have me buried in magic sand," he says, "I've never heard of a trustworthy Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we match, since I got told vampires always lie. Why don't we both buck the trend, be more than they say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does appealing to vampires' strong moral centers usually go well for you?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Voice amused: "You'd be surprised!" Which means it's worked exactly kind of sort of once ish, for a sufficiently vague definition of 'worked.' "Figured trying doesn't hurt, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Look, you wanna make a deal or whatever, let me up and give me my knife back and we’ll talk.  I’m pretty sure your sand demon lackey could kick my ass with or without it anyway.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Eh, sure. Run and you get buried again." A nod to Gaara, and he's free.

Permalink Mark Unread

He climbs to his feet, takes his knife, sheathes it on his belt.

He looks her up and down, hands in his pockets.  "You had questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right! So we have a problem with this Vanessa, right - or, well, she has a problem with me, she's very rude - and so I'd like to chat with her. Maybe get her to stop it with the terrorizing my family and sending assassins after me? Plus, like, see if I can't get her to move her group to ethical sources of blood - anyways. Vanessa! We'd like to know where she's hiding, preferably without having to question every single vampire in the city, which sounds like a fun time for no one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think Vanessa's ever going to be content sharing her territory with a Slayer," Galbraith says, a bit dryly.  "And we don't go in for the blood brothel scene."

He hesitates.

"But," he says, slowly and sort of appraisingly, "if you want her dead, I'd be happy to point you at her and get out of the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

That stops Nausicaa. What does she want?

"...I want her stopped. Hopefully with everyone not dead or dusted. But if it's her or all the people she'd kill..."

Honestly Nausicaa doesn't know if she has it in her to kill even a monster, but she does have it in her to bluff.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what happens to us once she's out of the picture?  I don't like her, but she is helping protect us from you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try not to be the sort of person one needs protection from. I won't go after anyone not killing people or non-consensually feeding - blood brothels, butcher shops, however you feel like it. And I prefer giving warnings and second chances, all told. Long term? I'm going to overhaul the system. It sucks for everyone. Humans, vampires, demons - everyone's got the short end of the stick, except for a few kings of the hill who're up there only as long as they can balance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're ambitious," he says.  "But I don't think you really understand vampires.  We don't do this because we don't have better options.  This is what we are.  We're higher on the food chain than you.  We're the bad guys.  Human-vampire alliances don't look like human-human alliances or even vampire-vampire alliances.  They look like, our short-term interests are aligned for now, and afterwards we'll give each other a head start.  Telling vampires that they're not allowed to eat unless it comes from humans who are into that isn't a pitch, it's what you force on us if you've already won."  He spreads his hands and smiles sardonically.  "Which, admittedly, in this case, you have.  Clearly you can make me do whatever you want.  But if you're really trying to negotiate in good faith - nobody's really gonna see that as a compromise position."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is clearly why I need vampire consultants. Books can only take me so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

He narrows his one exposed eye at her.

”You want the world to be better for everyone,” he says.  “But the point of vampires is to make the world worse for everyone but vampires.  Sooner or later you’re going to decide you can’t countenance our continued existence.”

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That'd take a hell of a long time since I'm stubborn, and by then I expect to have at least more options in my grasp. That don't involve genocide, even of assholes. Assuming, of course, it's even true that all vampires are irredeemably bad, which I don't believe. I also don't believe it's impossible to set up incentives such that even bad people will be pro-social - you can get humans to be pretty damn evil with the right circumstances, and humans are basically good, and honestly vampires seem pretty human-ish in, like, emotional processing. Just. Flipped around."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pinches the bridge of his nose.  “Again, saying that sort of thing right to my face is not making me more enthusiastic.  Inasmuch as you’re looking for my enthusiasm.”

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Look, I'd rather people not get hurt. Any people. But I'm not going to stand for killing humans. But... I'd be willing to look the other way on - robbing blood banks, or something. At least until the system gets fixed properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs.  "I guess, in that case, I'd be willing to look the other way on your tempting-vampires-to-the-light-side project until someone figures out how to open the Hellmouth," he says.  "So long as we understand how we sound to each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"May the best plotter win!" says a very amused Nausicaa. They're gonna be friends, she just knows it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He rolls his eyes, but his mouth twitches like the beginning of a smirk.  An affectionate smirk, even, maybe.

But then he turns serious again.  "I want you standing between me and your sand demon while we talk business," he says.  "Neither of us gains anything by betraying the other at this stage, but that way if one of us does the other can make them regret it before your friend inevitably wins the fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensible!" She's not gonna mention that she actually totally did well against Gaara, long enough to wear the other down into friendship. She moves to position herself, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Second - what are your names?  You never introduced yourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Izzy!" Which sounds enough like Uzun that she'll respond to it. She's not dumb enough to give a vampire her real name. "This is Suna." Hopefully he won't spot 'literally Japanese for sand.'

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not seem to.  "I'm guessing that, having tracked me down and stalked me to my home, you already know my name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much, yeah. At least the Galbraith part."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he says.  "So.  I'll tell you where Vanessa's hideout is, I'll fill you in on who else she's got working for her and who's likely to be there, I'll help you plan the break-in and assassination, but I want to stay out of the fighting.  I point you and your friend at her and run the other way, you contact me when the dust settles and we figure out how we move forward.  Deal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deal!" This is probably the most peppily sealed backroom deal ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods decisively.  "Have you heard of the Sterling-Blanc Mausoleum?  Vanessa's headquartered there."

The Sterling-Blanc Mausoleum is one of the larger and more ostentatious crypts in Sunnydale; anyone who's lived there a while will probably recognize the name.  (No one knows who the Sterling-Blancs actually were, though, only that one way or another they're not around any more.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Big fancy deal, looks like it was built by someone who wanted everyone to know they have more money than taste? Yeah, I know it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's even bigger and fancier underground," Galbraith says.  "She pretty much stopped leaving altogether once she started gunning for you.  Vanessa has four regulars, three of whom live on site and one of whom is me.  She had five until the op where we found your house - she figured you staked him.  - did you, by the way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah. Gave him a talking to - figure he probably skipped town."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs.  "He's out of the picture, either way.  Vanessa's got a handful of semi-regular contractors she pays for wetwork and enforcement now and then, but they're not likely to be at Sterling-Blanc when you make your move unless she figures out you're coming.  All vampires.  She had a ragdoll demon in her back pocket, who I think you've met.  You scared him off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll do our best on op-sec, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.  "Now, given that Vanessa herself never leaves, your best bet is attacking at night, I think.  There'll only be one or two of us on-site other than Vanessa, if you show up after sunset; everyone else will be on recruitment drives.  She keeps her best fighters near at hand, and she's no slouch herself.  I think you two can take them, but - stake fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for the tip!" Sadly Nausicaa hasn't managed to recruit any other demons...

Permalink Mark Unread

"What I'm here for.  Do you have paper?  I can sketch out a rough outline of the floor plan, I mostly know it.  Can't guarantee there aren't any secret passages between rooms, and it won't really be to scale either, but I can give you an idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, here - " She pulls a notepad out of her pack.

Permalink Mark Unread

He draws out the upper level of the mausoleum, notes down two secret entrances on opposite sides of the building, then sketches a rough floorplan of the lair proper.  It's laid out in a sort of horseshoe shape, with one secret entrance at each of the two heels and a cluster of rooms around the toe.  There's a fancy entrance hall off each secret entrance, a library, a sitting room connected to a few soundproofed cells where Vanessa and company keep live humans to drink from, a throne room for Vanessa, and a bedroom per vampire of which Vanessa has the largest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh. Captives. They'll have to be careful to rescue those, though she's hoping they'll move fast enough Vanessa won't realize she has hostages... (She doesn't say this out loud.)

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got a phone?  I'm gonna skip town, you can call me when she's dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I can reach you if you give me a number."

Permalink Mark Unread

He does.  "I'm leaving today, which means she'll know something's up soon by tomorrow.  Make your move soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will. Tomorrow night?" It's still the early hours of the night... Which means they could technically move on Vanessa immediately.

Permalink Mark Unread

"At the latest, I'd say.  We usually report in before sunrise, you've got some time if you want to go for it today.  But I gotta pack.  Don't kill me while my back's turned."  He heads for his room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Won't."

She glances at Gaara, who nods. Nausicaa's feeling 'go for it,' though she suspects G-man might be hard to bring around...

"Any other advice?" she calls out.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates, then sticks his head out of the room.

"Not advice.  Don't do this if it would be stupid.  But if you get a chance to deliver a one-liner right before you dust her, I'd like her to know that I was the one who sold her out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Seriously: "It's hard to plan a fight, but - yeah, I get you. I'll keep it in mind." She can smell 'history' there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," he says shortly, and returns to packing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. And we'll get out of your lair, now." She nods to Gaara, and heads out - ahead of her more threatening friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giles will pick up his phone promptly, when called.  "Nausicaa?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, we got pretty good info - but the surprise factor's gonna expire soon. Me and Gaara were thinking we should move tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be wise to take a few moments and check you're not more tired or hungry or stressed than you realize, but I wouldn't recommend moving too slowly either.  How are you feeling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of - not really hopped up on adrenaline, but I could get a rush easily? Wide awake, alert. Fight was pretty easy, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I recommend you move tonight.  Do you need transportation or additional weapons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Transportation and more weapons wouldn't hurt." She gives the location, and what they know of probable inhabitants - "But of course there could be more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll bring your crossbow."

He meets her a few blocks south of Galbraith's crypt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

They're both there. Nausicaa seems tense.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets them in.

They briefly go over the plan of attack, but for the most part it's a quiet drive.

"Good luck," he says, softly, when they arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, G-man," Nausicaa says, just as softly.

And then they're approaching the mausoleum on foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's grand and imposing, and silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's safer to approach together, so they're starting with the entrance nearer the cells - better not to have the vampires be able to get hostages as easily - using the same trick of Gaara's with sensing-sand.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's no one in the mausoleum proper, but if Gaara can manipulate her sand past the secret entrance, she'll perceive someone pacing back and forth on the other side.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does so.

Her sensory range isn't far like this...

But they know an opponent's there. They might have surprise, even, if the person's expecting another vampire.

She opens the entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can perceive the person on the inside whirling around, presumably to face the entrance.  "Who's there?" he calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sand blasts into his face, forcing its way into eyes and mouth as Gaara reveals herself.

(Detail work like this isn't easy, but Gaara's been practicing).

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts trying to shout something, but the sand chokes off his voice.  He draws a knife and slashes wildly through the air toward where the sand is coming from, and starts backing away blindly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She aims to trip and then bind him - enough at least Nausicaa can get cords and a gag on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He slows, walking deliberately enough that he's not liable to slip even on a thin layer of shifting sand, pointing his knife towards Gaara.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nausicaa moves behind him to trip him with a sweeping kick.

Permalink Mark Unread

He falls to the floor, and in one motion rolls over onto his front and starts raking his free hand through the air, looking for Nausicaa's leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jumps out of his way and then as Gaara's sand comes down goes to help pin him.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's little else he can do, at that point, but struggle vainly against her pin and against the weight of the sand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll try to get him gagged and tied up with the cords she brought.

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as the sand flows out of his mouth to make room for the gag, he shouts, "intruder!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Shit.

She gets him gagged fast.

Anyone coming?

Permalink Mark Unread

As she's standing up, the door opposite them bursts open - an unfamiliar vampire dashes in, a throwing knife in each hand, and as his eyes rake over the scene in front of him he pitches one of them expertly toward Gaara.  He starts charging Nausicaa while the knife's still flying.

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns into sand and falls to the floor, the knife sailing over her, and rematerializes in a crouch.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nausicaa leaps for the new dude.

Permalink Mark Unread

New dude brings his knife-holding hand up in something like an uppercut, aiming to stab Nausicaa in the stomach as she collides with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She twists, punches him in the solar plexus.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gasps, but seems unimpeded by not being able to breathe; he spins to face her, transfers the momentum from the turn into a roundhouse gut punch.

Permalink Mark Unread

That clips her as she jumps back again, dropping to try to trip him -

Permalink Mark Unread

As Gaara flings a solid ball of sand at the back of his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

He trips, falls, but turns his fall into a forward roll, and as he’s springing to his feet -

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns into enough sand to bury him.

She has to plan this - she can't change her mind while being sand - but once she's calculated he'd be down she turns back into human-shaped, crouched on his back.

Permalink Mark Unread

He manages to lurch to one side as he's bowled over - he doesn't land as gracefully, but he's not properly underneath Gaara either.  He shoves himself away from her and lashes at her leg with one arm at the same time, throws her off balance -

Permalink Mark Unread

She tumbles, falling and hitting the floor hard enough to bruise - and she's not particularly graceful getting back up -

Permalink Mark Unread

He scrambles over her - he's still holding his knife -

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa punches him in the back, before grabbing for his arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

As she grabs him, he slams the back of his head into her nose.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck ow - that's enough to crack her nose - but she keeps her grip.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll try, awkwardly and without leverage, to stab his knife into her hip - but she'll be able to keep him off Gaara.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gives her a shallow cut.

She grabs his wrist and tries to break it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crunch.

Wrist: broken.

Permalink Mark Unread

Presumably he drops the knife and is now easier to grapple into submission!

Permalink Mark Unread

He is.  He doesn’t bother calling for more backup, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ties and gags him, then checks out her cut - it's shallow she thinks - and Gaara's injuries - not too bad...

Is there anyone else coming?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not so it's obvious in the next few seconds.  No sign of Vanessa herself yet either.

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Gaara will keep moving then. Carefully. And - she guesses they need to check on the human captives? Maybe set them free if they can?

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

In fact, the next room is the sitting room, with comfy and ornate couches arranged around a glass coffee table, and three locked, heavy-looking iron doors on one wall.  A ring of keys hangs innocently from a small hook set into the wall, between two of the doors; there’s something uncomfortably domestic about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shudders, grabs the keys, and starts unlocking the door closest to the rest of the lair while Gaara keeps watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a couple people in raggedy, filthy clothes sitting on the floor inside, and a bucket.  One shrinks back when the door opens; the other doesn't bother moving, just whimpers quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is a rescue," she says. "Come on, let's get out of here - "

Permalink Mark Unread

They hesitate.

One of them, the woman who shrunk back from her, whispers: “Did you kill them?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ones here are tied up, but I'm getting you guys out before I go deeper."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Do you know - ” she says, and she breaks off and gestures weakly at her face, her forehead.  “They’re not - normal - I think they’re stronger than normal people - ”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know about them. What I'm using could hold a Grizzly."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Who are you?” she says, voice wondering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Part of a group that goes after jerks like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a weak, vaguely hysterical little giggle, but then nods and says “Okay” and gets to her feet, and helps the other prisoner to his feet as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My friend's gonna check the way's clear first, okay? Then you guys need to get away from here - there's a car," and she gives the make and model and location, "that a friend of mine's driving. Old white guy. He'll wait for everyone to get out then get you guys to a safe house."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  “Are we still in Sunnydale?  They knocked me out when they got me - ”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, still here. Come on, let's get everyone moving."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

The way's clear, but getting everyone out - not every prisoner is as talkative as the woman. One of them starts screaming and crying when Nausicaa tries to coax him to leave. One of them sits there staring at the wall, catatonic. One stares at her but keeps freezing as she inches out.

Nausicaa is getting very, very worried what the vampires are up to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gradually, gradually, prisoners are herded out of the mausoleum.

There's only one left, eventually; he's nervous, his eyes are darting and he keeps looking over his shoulder, but he's happy to follow Nausicaa's instructions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara's outside checking the path again; she's getting him to the ladder out, and her back's to the door - she's double checked her captives, she's not worried about them -

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone is leaping down the ladder towards them, someone with a vampire's snarl - the prisoner screams -

Permalink Mark Unread

She yanks him out of the way -

There's a stake at her belt and her hand's on it without her really noticing -

Nausicaa has terrifyingly good aim even when panicked and not thinking through what she's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just like that, he's dust.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not scream.

She checks the mausoleum, shouts for Gaara to come clear the area.

(The dust gets in her hair on her face on her clothes - that was a person - )

Permalink Mark Unread

If anyone else showed up, they're not in the mausoleum proper, or by this entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll lock the still tied up vampires into the cells, and keeps the keys on her, and then get last guy to the car - going with him - and make sure everyone's settled.

"Giles, you might want to leave, get them out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods once, smartly, and guns the engines.

Permalink Mark Unread

And back into the mausoleum.

...Is the other entrance clear?

(They might be expecting Nausicaa and Gaara to re-enter through the cells...)

There's no one at the other entrance, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they'll start sneaking in that way.

Permalink Mark Unread

The empty entrance hall leads to an empty library.  The door to the next room, to Vanessa's throne room, is closed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara tries the sensory trick again.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one's moving around very much, but diffusing enough sand through the next room will allow her to discern two roughly person-shaped figures, one next to each door, poised to strike around the corner as soon as someone opens it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara turns into sand, blasts through, her course set to intersect with the nearest vampire's probable position at that point, and to not return her to human form until she's at an edge away from both vampires.

Permalink Mark Unread

The vampire she hits staggers backward against the wall.  Vanessa, on the other side of the room, draws a knife and flings it toward the door, then rushes for where it looks like Gaara's going.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa avoids the knife then goes to intercept Vanessa.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vanessa changes course, draws her second knife, and brings it up in an upward stab, hoping to use Nausicaa's momentum against her.

The other vampire scrambles to his feet and rushes Gaara with a hatchet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's not got so much momentum she can't twist, grabbing at Vanessa's hand at the same time she tries to punch her in the face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara turns into sand again and slams past - hopefully through - him and into the library.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vanessa's face has shifted by the time Nausicaa's fist falls; unfazed by a broken nose, she goes for Nausicaa's throat.

The other vampire braces himself this time, and manages to keep his feet; he whirls around and - surprise! his hatchet is also weighted for throwing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's hand is fortunately close to Vanessa's throat; she tries to grab the vampire around the neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara flickers into sand, shifting to the side, out of sight of the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vanessa drives her fist hard into Nausicaa's solar plexus; the other vampire starts advancing cautiously toward their brawl, keeping one eye on the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa's too close, still holding Vanessa's dominant hand, and at too awkward an angle for that to have been an extremely hard blow; still, it hurts. She spins, throwing Vanessa towards the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

She rolls, moves to spring to her feet -

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa kicks her in the chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gasps and flinches - but seems to recover in a split second, and manages to spring to her feet anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crap.

Nausicaa tries to grab Vanessa again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara, meanwhile, engages the other vampire in a very strange game of keep-away as they each dodge or withstand each other's main attacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vanessa's fast, and she's got her eyes open this time - her hands move to knock Nausicaa's aside and then smoothly transition to grabbing her by the throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa makes a choked sound, and tries to kick or hit Vanessa, but her angle's not good -

Permalink Mark Unread

Vanessa drives her against the wall and bares her fangs -

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa can't dislodge her -

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites -

it hurts -

Permalink Mark Unread

And she's dust.

(Gaara turns her back on her opponent long enough to throw the stake, with a tendril of sand to keep it from hitting Nausicaa - )

Permalink Mark Unread

 - long enough for the last vampire to slash his knife wildly toward Gaara, across her back -

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls forward, stumbling -

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nausicaa throws a stake through his heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then falls to her knees crying -

Permalink Mark Unread

Gaara's flickering into sand, dissolving even as it absorbs her own blood, staunching the flow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nausicaa stumbles to her feet. Over to her friend.

"Let's - let's get out of here."

"Let's get you safe."
