"No. It's different." She seems withdrawn at the question.

"You okay?"

"I am not supposed to have been different like I am."

Um.

"We, uh, don't have to talk about this if we don't want to, but.  I think whoever told you that was wrong.  About some stuff."

"...Maybe."

"If people hate you or reject you or reject you because of - the way you look when you transform, or anything like that - that's their problem, not yours, and you're allowed to just find better people to be around.  That's not always possible or easy, but if you get the opportunity, you can just take it and not look back."

She seems a bit taken aback and wistful all at once, but - "I see why you're Nausicaa's friend."

"I try."

"Will you be my friend too?"

"Sure."

"That's good. What do friends do?"

"Well, hang out and talk about stuff," she says.  "Go to parties or clubs or cool places together.  Sometimes spend time at each others' houses.  And if one friend is in trouble the others help out however they can."

"That sounds nice."

"Is there anywhere you'd like to go that you couldn't get into when you didn't know any humans?  The zoo's pretty fun, me and Nausicaa were going to take a trip there some time."

"I haven't been to a zoo before."

“They’re fun, you get to see a lot of cute and interesting animals.  We've got room for one more on our zoo trip, right, Nausicaa?”

...Nausicaa had intended this to be a date but she can't exactly come out and say that if Kaylee hasn't noticed, she'd thought Kaylee was queer like her but maybe not - or maybe just so deep in the closet she hasn't noticed - 

"Sure!" Nausicaa says out loud.

Kaylee is oblivious!

"Great!  Sounds like fun.  Want to set a date?"

She checks with Gaara that the demon's free, then - "Sure. How about this weekend?"

"Works for me!"

"So... do you want to go talk to Mr. Giles again sometime sooner, now that you've confirmed most of the stuff?"

"Yeah. After school today maybe?"

"Yeah, that sounds good.  - Gaara, did Nausicaa tell you about any of the - Mr. Giles stuff?"

"A little? He doesn't like vampires, and doesn't trust demons, and wants her to focus on fighting."

Something occurs to her.  "Have you met any vampires?"

She nods, slowly. "Nausicaa asked me about some, but they don't talk to me much."
