Edie was perusing the latest correspondence from her fork. She still should have been paying enough attention to realize that the door didn't go where it ought before it swung shut and she couldn't sense anyone else anymore, but she wasn't.
After opening and closing the door a couple times to make sure she hadn't just been abducted somehow, she looks around.
"And I will ask if they'd have to come through the main bar for shift change," snorts Cam.
Off he goes.
...He comes back. "So, the person in there is competent to heal at least small injuries, but I could only find out by self-inflicting one, she wouldn't talk to me besides, like, stock phrases?"
"Huh. Maybe throwing Mr. People-Psychic here at her will help."
"I look a lot better than I am by virtue of having known pretty much everyone I interact with for centuries," he says, but he gets up and heads infirmary-wards.
In the infirmary is a fiftysomething human sitting in an armchair reading what looks like a field guide to dragonflies. When he walks in she looks up, smiles, makes eye contact. "Hello. Show me where you're hurt," she says.
"There's a piece of metal in my head that I don't want there, could you take it out?"
"...corpus of responses such that you need everyone to stay on script, or just a species that has really different default interactions?"
"What other things can people be? Fighters? Scientists? Researchers? Teachers?"
"Are those the local equivalents of the things I said or just occupations? What's a tephramancer?"
"Can you give me an overview of your world and its magic system, or should I keep asking questions?"
