Atlantis falls out of hyperspace window over a planet. Not in orbit, rather, rapidly falling down.

"McKay! We're falling, no way I can get orbit. Get me a landing site!"

The planet has an Earth-like distribution of landmasses, with five main continents and vast oceans between them. It has ice at the poles and deserts near the equator, showing a wide range of climates.

The unlit part doesn't seem to have any artificial light visible.

They continent they're currently descending towards has deciduous forests and high mountain ranges. At the center of it there is a vast lake, relatively shallow for its surface area.

To the north of it it's possible to see more forests and plains and, in the distance, the shimmering of some kind of barrier covering miles and miles of territory.

"We're missing the oceans, but there's a lake we can land on!"

"Okay, aiming for the lake, can't be harder than the bay, right?"

As Atlantis plummets through the atmosphere, anyone on the planet can observe a large fireball streaking across the sky, passing over the ocean and heading towards the middle of the continent.
