"Do you all want to hunt once Taylor's been picked up, or call it done for the night?"

"I'm up for a hunt."

"Well, see you guys!" Taylor says, and calls her mom.

Lianne and the others agree that they're up for a hunt, so once they've straightened up and seen Taylor off, they load up into Mallory's car to go dowsing.

Soon enough a witch presents itself: a brightly-lit caricature of a medieval castle built out of enormous children's blocks lettered and numbered in bright colors.  Jack-in-the-boxes (jacks-in-the-box perhaps) crawl through the corridors, dragging their boxes behind them.

"These things keep getting creepier and creepier..."

"I think the basement one is still spookiest, personally..." Kaylee glances over at her.  " - you okay?"

"Yeah. Come on, let's beat this thing."

"That's the spirit!"

Jack-in-the-box familiars go down as easy as ever, but there's enough of them that Kaylee's happy to have backup, from time to time.

Corridors and secret passageways wind around each other in geometrically-impossible tangles, connecting armories full of giant clown dolls and banquet halls complete with plastic feasts.

"I'd really like to find out one of these days what influences witches into their shapes," she mutters after another bizarre find.

" - hmm, yeah.  It's one thing for different girls to get different weapons and magical girl outfits, that could at least be drawing on something about us..."

"Maybe they feed on the nightmares of the people they eat..."

"Wouldn't each one look like a bunch of different things, then, though?"

"Dunno. It is weird that it's all stuff recognizable to us, though..."

"Yeah.  It's all been - artificial stuff.  It's gotta be drawing from - human minds or human-made things, somehow, it wouldn't come up with all this stuff by coincidence, would it?"

"No, I don't think it would..."

"Maybe it has something to do with the first person they eat... Mal, do you know if familiars that grow into witches look like the witches they came from?"

"They do. It's not too common to see them grouped, though, because naturally they'll disperse, or eat each other..."

"...do witches ever come from anywhere other than growing out of familiars?  Like - show up in spooky places on their own, out of nowhere?  Kyubey said they were 'born from curses' or something but he was really vague about what that means..."

"To my knowledge, some do naturally occur."

"That could have something to do with it."

Something seems a bit weird about the way Mallory's talking about this, but she can't quite put her finger on what.  - maybe she's imagining it.

"So on with the hunt?"

"Right, yes."

Onward.  As they move deeper into the barrier, the halls become bigger and grander, still made out of children's blocks all the while.

The witch is an enormous doll with a scepter and a crown and a mouth full of human teeth and gums that glisten wetly.

" - that's pretty creepy," Kaylee says.

"Yeah." She tightens her grip on her sword.

The witch's jaw opens and closes with a sound a bit like a bear trap, but it makes no other sound as it lumbers forward.

Its attacks are heavy and graceless, great slow swings of its scepter or its wooden fists, trying to catch multiple foes in one swing.  Kaylee is in her element; she can dance deftly out of the way of its attacks and strike back with precision at its mouth.
