Kaylee spends Friday night and Saturday morning thinking and thinking and thinking in circles.

Kyubey doesn't seem so bad...

Should she go through with it?

Is "to be braver" a safe wish?

He didn't think it would go wrong...

Is he trustworthy?

He doesn't seem so bad...

She doesn't get very far.  After Saturday lunch she retreats to her room, heart thumping, fingers drumming nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon, Kyubey appears at her window.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets him in.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hi Kaylee!  Are you ready to become a magical girl?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm... not totally sure.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I know it's scary, but the world needs more magical girls.  Plus, what if Lianne got hurt while hunting witches?  If you were just a normal girl you wouldn't be able to save her like she saved you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think you'd make a better magical girl than you think you will, Kaylee,' Kyubey says.  'You just have to wish to be a good person for the job, like we talked about doing.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...okay.'

She takes a seat on her bed, cross-legged.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey assumes a position opposite her, looking strangely formal for a weird alien cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Do I have to say it out loud?'

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head.  'You have to say it, but it can be over telepathy.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay.'

She takes a deep breath, closes her eyes.

'I wish to be the sort of person who would make a good magical girl - someone who can face down witches without being afraid, and who can take fighting monsters in stride without panicking or - being constantly stressed out.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Light, and wind, and something that is not quite pain.  White light emanating from Kyubey, and blue light emanating from her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Her outfit has changed.

She looks down at herself, sees stockings and long silk gloves, a frilly light blue skirt - twisting her neck around she thinks she can spot a blue bow on her back.  She's the perfect archetypal image of a magical girl.  She's wearing a silver tiara, with a cerulean gem set into the front that she's aware of like it's a part of her body.

She climbs off the bed, stands up.  She's lighter on her feat, every movement effortless.  She feels like she could hop from the driveway to the roof if she needed to.  Hesitantly she reaches out and unsheathes a narrow throwing dagger from thin air.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're a real magical girl now, Kaylee,' Kyubey says.  'Congratulations!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I feel different.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Magical girls are stronger and faster than ordinary humans,' Kyubey says.  'You need to be, in order to fight witches.  For now you should transform back, though, so you don't draw any attention.  Change your soul gem into its ring form - that's the jewel in your tiara.'

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as Kyubey tells her to do it, it's obvious that she can, and how.  She does: the magical girl outfit recedes and is replaced with normal clothes, the dagger disappears.  The gem becomes a tiny jewel set in an unobtrusive ring on her right hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Ordinary people won't notice the ring if you don't want them to,' Kyubey says.  'But you shouldn't take it off.  Always keep your soul gem on your person.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

'So... what now?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, you don't have to hunt right away,' Kyubey says.  'Your soul gem was just created, so it's still really fresh, and if Lianne will lend you any of her grief seeds you can use those to heal.  But you shouldn't put it off for too long.  I can help you on your first hunt, to find a witch that's not too strong for you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think I'd like that,' Kaylee says.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay!  Let me know when you're ready to go on your first hunt.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I will.  I think for now I need to just - sit around and... process, I guess.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's fine with me,' Kyubey says.  'Would you like company?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sits back down on her bed.  'Sure, if you don't mind sticking around.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey hops into her lap, curls up, and purrs.  'Not at all!'

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwww.

Scritch scritch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, though, Kyubey has to leave.

Kaylee paces, and sits, and lies down on her bed, and sits up, and paces, and thinks.

She's a magical girl now!  She doesn't have to worry about getting attacked by a witch and not being able to defend herself.  She doesn't have to feel like she'll never be able to repay Lianne for saving her.

...She hadn't really realized how much she'd been worrying about that, until she didn't have to any more.  That wasn't the only reason she went through with it, was it?  No, of course not, it's like Kyubey said, the world needs her to save it.  She'd thought that before she even knew about magical girls.

Mallory became a magical girl without totally trusting Kyubey.  That wasn't a bad call, was it?

Besides, she does trust Kyueby now, doesn't she?

...Mallory said to think hard about her wish.  She said she regretted just wishing for improved memory.  ...But Kaylee's not necessarily gonna feel exactly the same way just because she also wished for - mind-augmentation.  It's different.  She probably wouldn't have been able to fight witches at all without her wish.  It's good.  This is a good thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She spends Sunday catching up on her homework, trying not to think in any more circles.  It's no fun and it doesn't seem to be helping her.  She made her decision.  She's a magical girl now.

She doesn't try to get in touch with Lianne telepathically.  She wants to make the announcement face to face.

Monday arrives, and shortly thereafter, the school bus.  Kaylee gets on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne is there, reading a different book this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Lianne!  May I?"  She gestures toward the seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course!" She shuffles over a bit. "How was your weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty good!  Yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly same old, same old, though I had fun with the scouting group. The other girls are all great." 'We ended up hunting a witch none of us would've been able to handle on our own, except maybe Mallory, she's an amazing fighter. It was - intense.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh jeez, I hope everyone's okay!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We're all fine! We got a bit low on magic towards the end, but luckily the witch had a huge grief seed, and Mallory and another girl had brought spares to heal up mid-fight, which is a really smart idea. We all work well as a team, too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's good.'

'I, uh, kinda have some news on that front too actually.'

Permalink Mark Unread

 'Really?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Kyubey came over.  We talked.  I... I honestly think he just doesn't understand humans very well, and that's why he comes across weird.  Like - he asked me to help figure out why you didn't trust him, and it honestly seemed like he just didn't get it at first.  And then when I explained it to him he - it seemed like he felt bad.  So.  I think, like you and Mallory said, he just has trouble talking to us.  And when we talked, I said I'd - help him out with that.'

'And - we talked some more, and we talked about what my wish would be, and he said the vaccine wish probably wouldn't work.  And we - I picked another one.   And then on Saturday - '

She displays the ring on her finger.

'I decided to go through with it.  I'm a magical girl now.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'What did you wish for, then?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'd - it's kind of personal, I'd rather not say.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay, I understand, the other girls didn't really want to discuss theirs, either. Just - I hope your wish makes you happy.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks, Lianne.'

'So, next weekend I think I'd like to come with you to the magical girl meeting, maybe try going for a hunt.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that'd be great!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh good!  So what kinds of things did you do there, other than hunting witches?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'There were three other girls there - two magical girls, Alex and Sophie, and a potential, Taylor. We mostly chatted, though before hunting Mallory had us practice fighting together. We talked about potential wishes for Taylor - some of them got pretty silly. We also decided that since we're apparently superheroes now, we should have superhero names. We haven't named the team yet, though.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  'You're a superhero team?  That's awesome.  What's your superhero name?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Glimmer! I couldn't really think of anything better.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Aww, I think Glimmer's great.'  Kaylee pats her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks!' And the bus starts pulling up to the school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Students disperse.

*

At the start of lunch period, before either of them has made it to the cafeteria, Kaylee pings Lianne again.

'So, um.  If you don't mind me asking.  What's fighting witches like?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Exhilarating and terrifying, I guess. I've only fought two of them so far, but - there's... This commonality to them.' And she recounts the fight against the pottery-witch.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Wow, yeah, that sounds scary.  I'm glad you're okay.'

'I'm sort of... anxious to get my first hunt over with.  Like, scared, but also... impatient, I guess.  Did you get that after you became a magical girl?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, kinda, though I'd already had the one fight. I was more nervous about a witch attacking people near me.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh gosh, I didn't even think about that.  Now I'm really glad I became a magical girl.'

'Do you just go hunting on Saturdays with the group?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I've been dowsing a lot, there don't seem to be any anywhere in my range around here. I don't think they like the suburbs much. And, yeah, so far I'm planning on just hunting on Saturdays, though in a bit I'll probably start on Fridays, too. Probably try for weaker witches or even familiars then.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's a good idea.  Would it be okay if I went with you on Fridays?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, of course! We can be a superhero duo!'

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  'Glimmer and... um, I don't know... Bluejay?  Because my costume's blue.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That sounds like a fine name! Hey, what's your weapon?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I got throwing daggers.  You've got that really big sword, right?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah! Turns out it makes a pretty good shield, or I can throw it sort of like a discus.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh wow, that sounds cool, I'd like to see it.  What does Mallory have?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Guns - apparently originally just pistols, but now she can do all sorts of ridiculous things. Like machine guns. And canons. And long guns that fire exploding shells. Alex's got a bow and arrow, while Sophie's got, like, spears and stuff.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Guns?  Pff, that's cheating.'

'I think if I got to pick I would have picked a bow and arrow.  What about you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's weird, but they don't do as much comparative damage as you'd expect? Like, Alex was blowing holes in the witch with her arrows, though she was also being kinda reckless with her magic. I think the weapons are just - manifestations of magic. And I really like my sword, I think it - fits me, somehow. This might sound a bit silly, but it's like I was meant to wield it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's not silly.  It's kinda cool, actually.  And yeah, that makes sense, I was mainly joking.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Do you think they match to our personalities somehow? Though, yeah, in any normal fight Mallory's guns would be totally cheating.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Mm, I'm not sure.  I think I would have expected a bow and arrow in that case, the knives were a surprise.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Maybe they fit wishes somehow? Or like, what you're feeling when you wish. A sword-shield-thing definitely fits mine.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that could be.  I'm not sure how you'd get particular weapons out of - most possible wishes, though.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Kind of hard to tell without more data, really. Guns don't really match Mallory's wish, either.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, I guess not.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I wonder if Kyubey knows? Though that seems like a kinda silly question to bother asking.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I don't think he'd mind if you asked him.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay, I'll ask, then.'

'Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hi!  What is it?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Do you know what determines our magic weapons? And for that matter our costumes. Like, why do I have a sword, why does Kaylee have throwing knives... Why are they all different?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'No one's really sure, as far as I know.  A lot of magical girls see their own or other girls' costumes and weapons as appropriate to their personality - sometimes right away, and sometimes after coming to know themselves better.  But some magical girls never say anything like that at all.  It's hard to know.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That was kinda my guess. Thanks for answering!' And she relays Kyubey's answer to Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're welcome!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that kinda makes sense.  ...Maybe whatever process makes us magical girls just figures out the weapon we'd be best at using, somehow.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That might be it! Wielding the sword is super intuitive, for me. I don't think I'd click with a ranged weapon or something nearly as well.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  I don't know how I'll do with throwing knives - guess I'll find out whenever I go on my first hunt.  I think I would be more comfortable using a ranged weapon than getting up close and personal with a witch, though.'

(Maybe less so after the wish I made, she does not add out loud.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that seems safest. And the witch we fought together was really too big to use anything other than ranged weapons on. I don't think closing with them's going to be a smart idea, if they're the stronger kind.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, maybe not.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Though who knows how things will develop as we get stronger and more experienced. Having to throw my sword was definitely frustrating... Mallory showed me a way to sort of - powered jump - that's kinda like flying, and Kyubey said that proper flying's possible. Maybe if I master that I can close better even on large witches.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, it's probably easier to fight big huge things if you can fly at them,' Kaylee says.

Lunch winds down; food is disposed of.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Definitely!'

Lianne says bye to Kaylee and her other friends, then heads to class. The rest of the day's fairly unremarkable, and she greets Kaylee happily when gym rolls around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lianne!  How were your afternoon classes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More of the same, really. Though we're going to be starting on another play in English soon. How were yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Orchestra was fun!  I think I'm finally caught up with all the songs everyone else has been playing since the beginning of the school year."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  It was tough, especially since I haven't been practicing as much as I should be because of - stuff."  'Magic stuff.'  "But I got there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, starting at a new school can be rough, I guess." 'I still haven't told my mom I'm dropping track. I'll discuss it with the coach today, though.' "It's good that you're catching up, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."  'I forgot you mentioned you were gonna drop track.  That's... well, depending on how enthusiastic about it you were it might be a shame, I guess.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I mostly enjoy the exercise, which I can do in the morning. It's just - if I'm planning on spending my weekends hunting, I'm going to need the extra time to study and de-stress and all. I might join another club or two, though, that won't cut into the extra time too badly, and I can study during them sometimes. And - Mallory said social life tends to get sacrificed. I'd rather sacrifice track than spending time with my friends, all things considered.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That makes sense.  Maybe I should cut down on clubs too, I wouldn't want to miss out on socializing either.  Especially not with you.'  She flashes her a grin across the gym.  'Though if we're both magical girls I guess we've got an advantage there.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins back. 'Clubs are the main way I socialize, actually. And I was thinking of joining one of yours - you're doing creative writing and GSA, right?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yep!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll probably want the extra time Friday to get my weekend homework done - my mom's a lot more likely to agree to let me go out that way - but creative writing sounds fun! Though I'm not a big writer type... What're they both like?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, I've only been to each one once, but... GSA is sort of like a social club but not really?  Like, everyone sits in a circle and talks about - experiences with being queer, like if someone's been getting bullied it's a place to get support, and if someone just wants a place to talk about it with people they know won't react badly people will just chat.  I guess sometimes they talk to the administration if a teacher's being a jerk or not punishing bullies enough, and sometimes they organize stuff for things like the Day of Silence, but there's nothing like that coming up now.'

'Creative writing club has a period at the beginning where people talk about the sorts of stories they're writing right then, and then there's some free time at the end where you can work on what you're writing, or chat with other people.  Technically it only goes for an hour but the teacher who runs it will let you stick around until the after-school bus comes, if you want.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hm... I think I'll do just creative writing for now, then, see if I enjoy it, though I might swing by the GSA meetings every now and then, especially when there's activism stuff to do.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Cool!  Creative writing club meets on Wednesdays.  I'll let you know when GSA starts organizing their next event.'

Eventually, gym too must end.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay, thanks!'

Lianne heads to track once gym's done, and explains to her coach that she's falling behind in classes and needs more time to focus on homework and studying. He nods, says something commiserating about the modern homework load, and assures her there'll be a place on the team if she wants to rejoin later.

She thanks him, and heads for the school library until the activity buses arrive (might as well get started on that whole 'responsibly focusing on classwork' thing).

Her mom doesn't seem to know how to react to Lianne dropping track. Eventually she settles on asking Lianne's sister to make sure she spends at least two hours studying after getting home each day she would've had track. (Which, ugh, but her mom doesn't threaten to make her drop the 'scouting' group, so better than the worst-case scenario.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee doesn't have any extracurriculars on Monday, so she goes straight home.  She goes up to her room to work on homework; while she works, she transforms, as quietly as she can, and then conjures a throwing knife, examining it idly, turning it over in her hands, weighing it in her fingers.  Even with no practice, it's easy-but-not-trivial to balance the butt of the knife on her finger.

After a few hours, Kaylee pings Lianne.  'Hey.  How'd your mom take it?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'She's making me spend extra time on studying and homework, minimum two hours a day until my grades improve. Got my sister on enforcement, who's not going to let slacking off slide. So ugh. But kinda to be expected, given my excuse.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Jeez, that sucks.  Sorry.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. At least I'll still be able to do clubs, and I'll have time to hunt Friday, though it looks like I won't be able to do GSA, because time crunch. And, hey, my weekends are still free.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that's something.'

Time passes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tuesday goes much the same, though Lianne's a little bit distracted. She really likes chatting with Kaylee; they never seem to run out of topics. She feels... more and more distant from her other friends - they don't know, and maybe this is what Mallory meant by social life suffering.

Anime club rolls around. They're watching the first episode of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - apparently it codified part of a modern sub-genre, the club president informs them at slight length (if anyone's going to pioneer the field of Anime Studies, it's going to be their club president) - in a departure from their usual trend of watching mostly older, classic anime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sits next to Lianne, naturally.

'...it's kinda weird watching this now.  - Jeez, it's only been a week.  So much has happened, it feels like a lot longer.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I know! I'm just - a lot less excited about action sequences and stuff, now that I've seen how scary the real thing gets. Also, I kinda wanna throw popcorn at the screen for getting things wrong. Though I'd need popcorn for that.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles, covering her mouth with one hand.  'Is that a thing?  Throwing popcorn at the screen?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'My cousin does it for sports calls she disagrees with, so it's a her thing, at least.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles again.

'...Um.  Just to make sure... are you okay?  Watching this?  I mean, you seem fine, but...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's... definitely weird and kinda surreal, but it's not traumatic or anything? Though I'm a bit sad I don't enjoy it like I used to. Who knows, maybe that'll come back as I get used to this whole magical girl thing.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay, good.'

The episode winds down; Kaylee makes casual conversation with other club members, glancing over at Lianne and smiling frequently even when they're not talking telepathically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah Lianne's smiling back and occasionally glancing over, too, even as she chats with her various friends and doodles a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually anime club is over, and yet more eventually the bus arrives.

As they're sitting down, Kaylee says, "Hey Lianne - you mentioned having me over for dinner sometime?  Wanna do that tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to ask my mom, but tentatively yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'll have to check with my parents too.  I think they'll be okay with it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I can't really imagine my mom saying no, but stranger things have happened! Do you want to just come straight over after clubs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She chuckles.  "Yeah, that sounds good to me.  I'd like hanging out some before dinner, and maybe after too if your mom doesn't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have my obligatory two hours of studying in by then, so I don't think she would. I'll let you know for sure tomorrow morning, though!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!"

The bus trundles homeward, and eventually reaches Kaylee's stop.

"See you tomorrow, Lianne!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

And home, where once her mom arrives she confirms that, yep, Kaylee can come over, as long as Lianne gets her studying done first.

Permalink Mark Unread

She talks to her dad and her dad okays it, so the next day, after creative writing club, Kaylee gets off the bus at Lianne's stop.

She rings the doorbell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne meets her at the door.

"Hi Kaylee! Come on in - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lianne!"  She enters.  "How long do we have until dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"About two hours, after my mom gets home. What do you want to do until then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm," Kaylee says.  "We didn't get around to trying DDR last time I was over, did we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! I'll have to find the mat - feel free to set your stuff anywhere and get a snack or something while I look - "

And the mat can be dug out of the closet and the coffee table pushed back a bit to make extra room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sets her bag on the couch and examines the fridge for snacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's, like, cheese sticks, pudding cups, or various dips. Plus some fruit on the counter, or a silly variety of granola bars, chips, crackers, and such in the pantry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pudding cup get!  She returns to the living room.  "Need any help setting it up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I got it! Thanks for offering, though."

The mats are set up in short order, and they can play (does Kaylee have any opinion on which DDR game? Lianne's somehow collected multiple).

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee doesn't even know what all the DDRs are.  Lianne's choice.

Permalink Mark Unread

The newest one, then.

"So which difficulty setting should we start at?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's start on easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Easy it is!

Lianne hasn't played in a while, but she's still pretty good at the game. (Though she notes that she's apparently gotten even more coordinated since becoming a magical girl).

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is somehow both a surprisingly good DDR player and an extremely bad dancer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne might be giggling a bit. Might.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, what are you laughing at?"

She knows what Lianne is laughing at.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "You're just so cute, I can't help it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Kaylee's giggling.  And blushing.  The only reply she can muster is "No you're cute!" which just makes her blush brighter after she says it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne laughs, enough that she ends up missing a bunch of arrows in a row. "Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooooo it's an insult!  You cutie!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm dastardly adorable, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes exactly!  How dare you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne almost falls over giggling. She's definitely losing the game; playing DDR while laughing is surprisingly hard.

"Well, if I'm dastardly, then you're a supervillan of cuteness!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dare!  How dare you!  You take that back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"All fall before your adorableness!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could sue you for slander!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I plead truth!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pshh, it'll never work.  You're gonna go to jail.  For slander.  And also being cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No jury would convict me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see about that!  I'm taking you to court!  Do you know how to take somebody to court?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zero clue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Possibly. Just a small one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very minor problem.  Hey, weren't we playing a video game or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or something! I think we've both lost by now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna start it up again?  Kick up the difficulty?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!" And a new song can be selected.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee will happily keep this up until Lianne's mom gets home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne mostly will, though she needs to break off around five-thirty to go help her sister make dinner. "We're being fancy today. No pizza or delivery when friends are over. My mom gets home too late to cook, though... I forgot to ask earlier, any dietary restrictions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope!  Not picky, either.  Do you need any help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, we're good! You're the guest, you should relax."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you're sure.  Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Then dinner can be prepared, finishing shortly after their mom gets home. Dinner's a pasta dish, the sort of thing that looks kinda fancy but isn't actually that hard to make.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks good!" she says, when dinner is served.  "Smells good too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, and takes a bite.  "It's delicious!  Thanks for making it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for coming over!"

Lianne's mom then asks how everyone's day's been; Lianne responds generically, while her sister briefly gripes about a teacher but says her day was otherwise good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's day was good too!  Biology was interesting as always, Orchestra was fun.  She talks a bit about the story she's writing for creative writing club, involving talking animals.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, you're way more creative than me! I'd really like to read that story at some point, if you don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd like that," Kaylee says.  "Just Lianne, though," she adds, grinning.  "Special best friend privileges.  I'm nervous enough about showing the folks in the club."

Permalink Mark Unread

That might be a bit of a blush. Definitely a delighted smile. "So you're enjoying creative writing, then? And it's okay to be nervous, though I'm sure your story's great! I can proof-read it some though if you'd like? If you think it'd help with the nerves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thanks!  I think I'll be just as nervous either way, but I'd still appreciate it.  Creative writing's fun!  I don't think I could be an author but I like writing stories sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hobbies are pretty important, too! I could maybe join you - "

"Once your grades are up," her mom interjects.

"- Once my grades are better. I'm not the writing type - that's seriously a great skill to have - but I could, like, do illustrations or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee blushes.  "That'd be cool!  I can't draw at all, I think that's more impressive.  We could make a comic together!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be fun! Though I'm really not much past doing just, like, sketches..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs one shoulder, and smiles.  "I haven't been writing that long, either.  We can figure it out together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess so!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

Dinner proceeds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's family's not all that talkative - most conversation stays extremely shallow. Her sister's a bit gruff, but her mom's unfailingly polite (even if she seems somewhat distracted), and neither really tries to get to know Kaylee all that well.

Eventually dinner's over, and Lianne's mom starts clearing the table, waving off any offers of help. "I didn't cook, so it's fair that I clean. You all go enjoy yourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!" Kaylee says to Lianne's mom.  Then, to Lianne: "So, you up for more DDR?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure! Or we could go up to my room; I think my sister might want a turn on the TV soon?" She half-turns to said sister as she says this.

Her sister shrugs. "You two can do whatever, I can watch something on my computer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I don't mind hanging out in your room.  Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's!"

Lianne's room is decent-sized, with walls that are probably white, though it's hard to tell under all the posters, bookshelves (with books, knickknacks [mostly anime themed], and assorted sports trophies), and pegboards full of drawings. The desk is big, with a dedicated space for drawing next to the computer. For seating, there's pretty much just the bed or the desk chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee smiles when she sees Lianne's room.  She examines the pegboards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly finished sketches, some pen drawings, some colored pencil drawings; Lianne's style has very obviously been strongly influenced by manga. They're almost all single-subject, in a simple perspective with little or no background. Still, her drawing has a fluidity to it, and what're probably the more recent drawings (on a half-finished board) suggest the beginnings of a more distinct style, with attempts at more complicated perspectives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I really like your drawings," Kaylee says.  She looks around for a place to sit, and then gestures to the bed: "May I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks! And sure, feel free." She plops down in the desk chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."  She sits.

"So, uh," she says, lowering her voice, "have you heard from Kyubey lately?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really, though he's not big on the whole reaching-out thing, and I haven't contacted him. I was kinda surprised he didn't ask to go witch-hunting with me, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that does sound like the sort of thing he'd want to do."  She fidgets with the ring that has her soul gem on it.  "To be honest, I kind of imagined it would take up more of our lives than this.  Maybe it'll feel like more once I've gone on my first hunt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, we're not really using magic a lot, or trying to maintain a territory. Being out here seems to have put us away from the bulk of the action, I guess. ...Maybe once we're able to move around better it'll take up more, it's not like either of us has a car. Girls in big cities are probably busier. And, yeah, it does feel like a lot to me after the fights - it's a good bit of my conscious attention, y'know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that makes sense."  She lies back and exhales heavily.  "It feels good to talk about it out loud, not just over telepathy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. The telepathy's - useful, but kinda weird-feeling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  And... I don't know, there's something about actually saying the words.  I am a magical girl, and I have to fight witches, because a talking cat granted a wish for me.  I have a transformation sequence, and I can conjure throwing knives."

I wished to be braver.  I would have been too scared to go in after you the way you went in after me.

She sits up.

"I... don't like keeping secrets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know what you mean, though I'm more - okay - with the secrecy. It's... It's just all so absurd. In a horrifying way."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I wonder if... if everybody knew, someone could figure out a better way to fight them.  I know Mallory said nonmagical weapons don't work great against them, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. They have to work some. Though most people being - just potential victims - would complicate matters. A lot. And you'd probably run into child labor problems or something, and have a crackdown on letting girls under eighteen fight, and there might be resistance to letting girls wish. Some people might also freak out more about the telepathic aliens than about the witches. But we need to do something, and - I'm optimistic about the magical girl group, and how much it improves our effectiveness, but sometimes I worry it's not enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could... scale it up, somehow?  Gradually?  Like everyone who's in it now can go on to start their own groups as they have more experience, and we can just... iterate.  And - I don't know how Kyubey finds potential magical girls, but it might be easier if we can go public.  ...You're right about the kids thing, though, I don't know what to do about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We can also ask Mallory what her plan is, long-term. And, like, I definitely agree with some kind of age limit on wishing? But - not the one people would probably set. Not when - all of this - is so important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"...Do you think we were too young?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I don't feel like it, but - maybe that'll change once I'm older. And I'm sixteen, that's - almost old enough to join the military. Not too long ago, it would've been old enough. Is old enough, some places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're sixteen?  I'm fifteen," she says vaguely.  "Yeah, maybe you don't know you weren't old enough to become a magical girl until you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I - think you're right. And - I had to make the contract. I wouldn't trade saving you for anything, and if Kyubey cared about 'old enough' we'd both be dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and looks down at "wouldn't trade saving you for anything."

"Thank you," Kaylee says.  "I feel like - I'll never be able to thank you enough, for saving me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight smile. "I know you feel the need to thank me, but - I don't need thanks. It was... The right thing to do, and - I'd never wanted anything like I wanted you safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try to stop saying it so much if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She really wants to hug Kaylee right now. She's not sure if that'd be welcome.

"No, it's - not a burden to me, and you should be able to express your feelings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay.  Thank you for saving my life, Lianne."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles slightly. "Thank you for being my friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome.  And thank you for that, too.  Being my friend, I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome! It's really no trouble at all. Happy to be your friend at any time."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "Same goes for me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. Broad smile, then embarrassed chuckle. "Well, that got deep fast." Softer smile. "It's really nice, having you to talk to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that happens with me sometimes."  She laughs.

"It's nice talking to you too.  You're a really good friend, Lianne."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. You're - the best friend I could have asked for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...would it be all right if I hugged you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I - a hug sounds nice." She gets up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee stands too; then, hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into the hug for a bit, resting her chin on Kaylee's shoulder (she smells nice, which strikes Lianne as somehow oddly unfair, though she's not sure why), then reluctantly disentangles herself and sits on the bed, next to where Kaylee was earlier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sits down next to her.  She's grinning.

Her phone buzzes.  She checks it.

"My mom's asking when I'm gonna be home.  - Jeez, it is getting pretty late.  I - should probably head home soon."  She has the sudden urge to apologize, but - would that be a weird thing to say?

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at the clock. "Oh, wow, yeah, it is late. My mom should be able to give you a ride again, if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me.  ...I had a really good time tonight.  Thanks for having me over."  (Gosh, why is sitting next to Lianne making her heart flutter so much?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for coming over! I really like hanging out with you."

(Lianne is completely oblivious to any heart-fluttering, though only partially oblivious to the warm, fuzzy feeling she gets when around Kaylee.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me too.  We should do this again.  Maybe I can show you my place?  I don't have any drawings but there's a couple stories on my laptop I've been working on," and then on a wild impulse she adds, "or I could play cello for you."  The image of playing some slow and beautiful cello solo for Lianne is suddenly a very attractive one, for some reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds great! I'll have to get permission from my mom, of course, but she might allow me over on a Friday, since I'd be able to get my homework done over the weekend. Probably not this one, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we'll see each other this weekend during the hunt, right?  So that's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! So, should we head downstairs? I can go get my mom if you're about ready to go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's."  She texts her mom - "be home soon!" - and they can head down.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Lianne can fetch her mom.

Lianne walks with Kaylee to the door and says, "So, see you in class tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then!"

She hesitates, then holds out her arms in a hug-me gesture.  "One for the road?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"Bye, Lianne!"

And then, to the car, and home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's mom isn't as chatty as she was the last time; she mostly just asks if Kaylee had fun, and if she has any plans to visit again (they'd be glad to have her).

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a great time, thanks for having me!  I'd love to come over again some time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as Lianne's grades stay up, that sounds wonderful. Maybe the two of you could have a study session?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, just let me know when."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do!" Kaylee says, as they pull up to her house.  "Thank you again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime!"

She lets Kaylee out at the curb, then wishes her well and drives off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodbye!"

*

Thursday passes.  Classes remain straightforward and people remain friendly.  She doesn't have anything after school on Thursdays, so she goes straight home, hiding up in her room and practicing her weapon-conjuring.  It turns out she can create ordinary combat knives as well as throwing daggers, though they're a shade trickier.

She tells her parents about "the scouting group that her friend Lianne joined" and that she's interested in joining up as well; if it's all right with them she'll be heading into the city on Saturday.  It is all right with them.

"Have fun!" her dad tells her.  "Say hello to Lianne for me!"

"Dad, you haven't even met her," she says affectionately.

"Doesn't mean I can't be friendly!"

Friday comes.  She's getting jittery, waiting for her first hunt, but it's not exactly nerves.  She's not as afraid as she expected; could be the wish is doing her some good.  Classes pass.  GSA passes; she's quiet.

Finally, Saturday comes around.  She pings Lianne.  'Meet you at the community center?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah! I need to finish up here, then I'll be on my way.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'See you there!'

Kaylee gets there first, and spends a few minutes waiting outside the community center.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne arrives soon enough. She smiles when she sees Kaylee, hurrying up to her a bit. "How was your day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lianne!  It was pretty good!  My dad says hello, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's nice of him. Tell him I said hi back." She heads into the community center, complaining lightly about her homework load as she leads the way to the group's meeting room.

Taylor's not there, nor is Alex, but Sophie and Mal are sitting and chatting quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello!" Kaylee says as they enter.  "Are we early?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not really. Alex can't make it today, and Taylor's running a bit late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha.  I'm Kaylee, hello!  I've met Mallory already but no one else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Sophie! Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too!"  She sits down.  "So, how does this usually work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usually we talk for a while, sometimes about witches we've fought, or techniques we've figured out, or often just about our lives, since I've noticed it helps to have someone to vent to who's in on the secret. After a while, we head out to hunt. This time, since you're new, I'll want a short training session before the hunt, to familiarize ourselves with each others' techniques."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!  Do we want to wait for - um, Taylor, was it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can introduce ourselves some, at least. Taylor should be here soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!  I'm Kaylee, I found out about magic stuff about a week and a half ago when I was attacked by a witch and Lianne saved me - " she smiles sappily at Lianne as she says this " - and I only decided to become a magical girl this Monday.  I figured, so few people seem to know anything's going on, we probably need all the help we can get."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's great! I've been a magical girl for about two years now. And, yeah, it's a bit of an uphill battle. I hunt pretty often, and the numbers never seem to actually go down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, wow, that's a while.  What's it like, doing this for so long?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mallory's been at it even longer, I'm pretty sure. But, yeah, it gets - tiring after a while, though the witches start seeming pretty much normal fairly quickly. This group's a super nice change of pace, especially compared to the usual territory disputes. Those fights are never fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've been in fights with other magical girls?  That sounds awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not exactly uncommon, especially in cities. A lot of girls try and establish territories, and even if you're not trying to shake their hold, they object to competition. Most of why Mallory's thing is so revolutionary."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "Well, let's hope we can get lots of girls on board."

"So, what's your weapon?  I've got knives, I know Lianne has that big sword..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spears! All sorts. And Alex has a bow and arrow, and Taylor doesn't have anything yet since she's a potential. Mallory's got guns."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!  Do you have any guesses how different weapons get chosen for different people?  Lianne and I were talking about it the other day, and it seems like Kyubey doesn't even know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea. Guns seem to suit me, but I've seen what looked like some pretty poor matches before, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Personality match is the best I can figure, but that doesn't seem to be it entirely. Spears just seem - thematic? For me at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, for me I would have guessed bow and arrow.  ...Have either of you ever seen two people with the same weapon?  Like, just by coincidence?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sophie shakes her head, while Mallory looks pensive. "I've seen category repeats - there's only so many possible weapons after all - but always the - base weapon - is different, and I've never seen two people with the same weapon-category in the same room. I've also never met another person with guns as their weapon, even though I've heard them mentioned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm.  So, like, someone else might be able to make different kinds of spears, but the default - the way it comes out if they're not trying for something specific - would be different from Sophie's.  You think guns are rarer, for some reason?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not that rare. Bows and arrows are extremely rare from what I've seen, but guns - I've heard plenty about others with some kind of gun. Bladed weapons of various types seem to be most common, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would have expected it to be the other way around, personally.  Uh, stop me any time if you want to talk about anything less frivolous," she laughs lightly, "but what's the most out-there weapon you've ever seen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"LasersHonest-to-God lasers. That was a rather interesting one-off."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.  "Like - like futuristic laser guns, or little laser pointers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like futuristic laser guns, though shot from her hands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's awesome!  I kinda wish I could meet her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That - won't really be an option. I think she would've liked to meet you all, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh.  - I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. I didn't really know her that well, only heard about her death a while after she dropped off the map. It was about eight years ago, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.

"...I guess it's gotta be pretty dangerous, especially with everyone working against each other.  I'm glad you're trying to fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do what I can, but - thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much do you think we'll be able to... expand, over time?  Like, if we all..."

...if we all survive

"...if we all grow up and start our own branches, say, and still manage to coordinate between ourselves..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, assuming Taylor becomes a magical girl, and Alex continues attending, and each of you goes on to mentor others - I'd say we'd probably get to three to five girls each at a minimum, maybe more as word spreads. Unfortunately, the low density of girls would end up acting against us, at least until we've been active for a while. I should also be able to at least impact if not outright recruit more girls than just this - but even if not, the six of us should manage to reach at least another eighteen to thirty girls, probably sometime in the next decade at the most.

"Change will be slow, but that's more than what anyone else has managed so far. I'm hoping that our success will also inspire copy-cats, and the impact of that's harder to estimate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if there's a way to get non magical girls to help.  People who are too old to make contracts, or boys.  Like, they can't fight, but... if there's ever enough of us that we can go public, maybe they can raise awareness or help fund full-time fighters... do you know if there's anything ordinary people can do to make themselves or other people safer from witches?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good idea, but - no. I don't know anything. Being very aware of the symptoms of a witch's kiss and knowing to call a magical girl when you see someone afflicted would be the only thing I can think of, but that'd rely on bystanders intervening, which they usually don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely if we could work with the police... but we'd have to be public by then..."

She thinks back to what it felt like to be affected.  No, there's no way she could have fought back, even if she knew what was going on.

"I think... even if people can't do anything, it would be better for them to know, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I agree. It's - I can see why secrecy could be important, but it's right that people know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same, though I think I get where you're coming from on the secrecy, too. A lot'd be impeded with everyone knowing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You all have a point. Still, I really don't think we're in a position right now to come forward, and there's a lot of risks to it, since it's never been done."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I may be getting ahead of myself a bit, yeah.  For now... fight witches, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taylor chooses that moment to arrive, knocking on the door briefly before letting herself in. "Hey everyone! Sorry I'm late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello!  I'm Kaylee, I'm new.  I'm guessing you're Taylor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I'm a potential; I haven't really decided what to wish on yet - and Mallory says I should wait until I'm sixteen, though Kyubey says my wish will be stronger if I'm younger. Lianne mentioned you last week. What'd you wish for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather not say, it's kind of personal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, sorry! I wasn't really thinking, most people don't want to talk wishes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay.  Can I ask how old you are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I turned fourteen a few months ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Happy it-was-your-birthday-a-few-months-ago!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. Thanks, I guess. How old are you both?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sixteen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fifteen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So not too much older than me, then! Have you been to any witch-fights yet, Kaylee?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope, this'll be my first.  I'm a little nervous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fighting witches kinda worries me, too. I've never seen one but I've heard about them. It does sound kinda cool, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah, I could see that.  ...I might feel differently once I actually do it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

When it doesn't look like Taylor has anything else to say, Mallory speaks up. "Anyways, I think we should discuss the last hunt some, now that we've had time to think it over."

She summarizes the hunt in pretty fine detail, mostly for Taylor and Kaylee's sakes but also to refresh Sophie and Lianne. "So what mistakes do you think we made?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shouldn't have waited to see what that whirlwind thing was doing, and should've just gone straight for the witch. Also we probably shouldn't have tried to engage all four of those familiars at once; we didn't want them coming up on us from behind, but thinking back they were ignoring us until we opened the doors, so that probably wouldn't have been an issue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We also weren't being careful enough with our magic. We used too much on healing and against the familiars, especially me and Alex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, those were my conclusions, too. Can anybody think of anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne, Sophie, and Taylor all shake their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee does too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has anyone figured out any new techniques? Kaylee, what can you do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I haven't tried too much yet - I can make knives, they come out as throwing knives by default but I can also make, like, melee knives - I looked up knife blades on wikipedia, and there's a few different, like, shapes I can do, like for slashing or stabbing.  I haven't tried flying or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's great! You've already worked out more than most do this soon. We can work together on more."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.  "Thanks.  So, what sort of - acrobatics - can we learn to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's the long jump we talked about for the last hunt, and proper flying is possible, though magic-intensive. It's more feasible to just use it to change directions on a jump. Increasing your strength, flexibility, and speed beyond the standard boost you already have is a very common trick. Long jumps are useful for maneuverability, especially with you using a ranged weapon. Different aspects come more easily to different people, depending on various factors. Your wish can also impact your powers. Anything related to your weapon will come intuitively, though figuring out new shapes for it can be harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "So I'll know how to do stuff with my knives, not just be able to do it easily.  Kyubey also mentioned telekinesis - has anybody managed that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some. Nothing that'd be useful for a fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can, and fairly well, but it's draining and my magical capacity isn't particularly high."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.  "I'll focus on learning the physical enhancements.  What else can you guys do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can make ordinary weapons into something that can damage a familiar - not well, and it isn't an efficient use of magic, but it's better than a plain weapon - heal myself and others, create barriers, summon restraints, cancel others' magic, shut off pain - wouldn't recommend doing that, it slows your reaction times - I can also do a few niche things, like affect the rate something's decomposing at. There's a host of other abilities, as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't do even half that, though I don't have a lot of spare time for just playing around. I mostly focus on combat stuff. I've gotten pretty good at summoning and using different spears and at healing myself. I'm trying to work on a barrier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh wow, that's a lot. I wouldn't even know how to begin trying to do any of that stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can walk you through things some, though everyone has their own methods and specialties. I mostly focus on low effort, high impact - I can't do anything too draining, like summoning clones of myself - I once fought a girl who could do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'd appreciate that, thanks.  Summoning clones sounds useful - I'd feel weird about it if they were all different people, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think they are from how they fought, just extensions of the original. It seems like a high-magic move, though. Is there anything in particular you want to work on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm... healing other people sounds like it could be useful even outside of fighting witches, if something mundane bad ever happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a great thing to work on. I'd suggest studying anatomy and conventional medicine some, too, to make it take less magic. It's also easier to heal others after you've healed yourself a few times, which is pretty intuitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that - it'll be a head start on studying to become a doctor, too, if I decide to try to do both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does anybody have other questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Kaylee hasn't picked a superhero name yet!" She turns towards Kaylee. "Last time we decided we're basically a superhero team. Lianne's Glimmer, I'm Moon Dragon, Alex is Ace of Hearts, and Taylor's waiting until she wishes. You should pick a code name, too. And maybe suggest a team name? We haven't picked one properly yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.  "I think Bluejay - my costume's blue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's cool! Mine has some small moon designs on it. So Moon Dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works!  I don't know what our team name should be, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, no one had any good ideas either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excuse you, my idea was hilarious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was horrible, is what it was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was your idea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magical Task Force Five! Or six now, though Magical Task Force Six doesn't sound as catchy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd have to keep changing!  Magical Task Force f(x) where x is time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magical Task Force Function is actually pretty catchy, if nonsensical. Like most super sentai team names, to be honest."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "If you put enough cool sounding words together it'll all work out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sophie groans. "We're not naming the team magical task force anything. It's silly, is what it is. Anybody have a better idea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, though since this is going to get pretty big someday I feel like we should have 'League' in there somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magical League of Supreme Justice!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Helpless, helpless giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about just 'Magic League'? Or 'League of Magic'? We could do a stylized 'M' as our symbol."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But that's just boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry Lianne but I think I'm going to betray you.  Magical League sounds good.  Or League of Magical Girls?  That has a nice three-letter abbreviation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Noooo! Kaylee how could you, I thought we were best friends! Join me, and resist the boring side!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry, Lianne, but where you're going I can't follow."  She reaches out an entreating hand.  "Come back to me, Lianne!"  The effect is slightly marred by barely-suppressed laughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne can't help it - she collapses into giggles. "Fine. For the sake of our friendship, I shall follow you - even into staid names!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sophie rolls her eyes, while Taylor giggles a bit, but they both agree to 'League of Magical Girls,' pending input from Alex. (Mallory just says she'll go along with whatever the girls decide on.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, I'm glad we worked that out.  So - what's next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's getting a bit late, so we should probably head out to practice, to get used to having a new team member."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got to go, then. It was great meeting you, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too, Taylor!  Goodbye!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can use the same field as last week, if that's okay with everyone," Mallory says after Taylor finishes her goodbyes and leaves. "I'll drive us there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory leads the way to her car, mostly not participating in Lianne and Sophie's light chatter.

And to the training field they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Time to transform?" she asks, once they're all out of the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would say so." Mallory's costume changes with a glimmer of light, followed by Sophie and Lianne. "Show us what you've got?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins, and then transforms in a shower of cerulean light.  Frilly skirt, blue bow, silver tiara.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your costume's pretty! It suits you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thanks!  I really like yours too.  It's sort of... dashing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! It's not very much standard magical girl aesthetic, is it? More like something out of a fantasy game."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you're like a knight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here to rescue lovely damsels from vile dragons!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee laughs and blushes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a bit. "Anyways, you said your weapon was daggers? We should probably get to practicing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!"  She plucks a pair of throwing knives from the air, one in each hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!" She then points out the targets they rigged up last time, in case Kaylee wants to work on getting a feel for aim. "I need to practice shaping my sword, but we can also try and practice coordinating attacks?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's.  So, how does this usually work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Last time we all showed off some, then fought each other a bit, and talked about strategies. I think I'd like to practice teaming up some, though - we didn't really have a super good feel for that last hunt."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "So like, two on two, or all of us versus Mallory?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to do two-on-two. How about we do one ranged, one melee per team? With Lianne and me as melee, you and Mallory as ranged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me.  How do we pick teams?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'd prefer to team up with you, Kaylee. Is that fine with everyone?"

Both Mallory and Sophie nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'd like that."

"So, um.  Is it... live fire, I guess?  I don't think I can make practice knives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd recommend practicing against an inanimate target first, for that reason. We can also try to avoid injuring each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha.  We each just pick a target?"  She eyes one of them, tossing and catching one of her knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what I'd recommend, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, steps into line with one of the bullseyes, and throws.

The knife thunks into place near the edge.  "Ha!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good shot! Once you've gotten your aim down, you can try imbuing your knives with more power, though be cautious of how much magic you use for that. Anbd, Sophie, you said you were working on a barrier - " She steps to the side and starts walking Sophie through making her own barriers (Sophie's current angle is a lattice of spears, which she thinks should be less costly than a barrier of pure energy).

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne grins at Kaylee. "You've got better aim than I would."

She then backs away from the others some and appears her sword with a twirl, then starts focusing on it to try and get it to lengthen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee tries a few more throws.  The second lands a bit closer to the center, but the third goes wide, and blinks out of existence before it hits the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you get it to vanish like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure.  I didn't want it to fly off and hit something else - I guess there's not really anything to hit - " she laughs sheepishly.

She frowns at the other knives, and they spark out of existence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a good safety precaution. I suppose it's probably similar to how I vanish my sword, though I have some trouble doing that if I'm not holding it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe it's easier for me since these are supposed to be thrown.  Do you know if Alex can vanish her arrows like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Hey, Sophie, can you vanish your spears easily when they're a distance from you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sophie looks up from her barrier practice. "Yeah, though it takes a bit of focus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Maybe I'm just having visualization problems. Something to work on."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee shrugs.  "Different people are good at different things, I guess."

She conjures another few knives, gets two more hits, and then tries a throw with her left hand.  It goes wide, but she thinks it's still easier to throw with her off hand than it would have been before she became a magical girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's having some success with changing her sword's size! It's easier to make it shorter than to make it longer, but not by much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee shoots her a glance.  (A couple glances, really.)  "That's really cool, Lianne!  I've never gotten a good look at your sword before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! Your daggers are pretty awesome, too. It's cool how many shapes you can already do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Thunk, thunk, thunk; her aim is already getting better, with both hands.  She tries throwing two at once, and - thunkthunk.  She hops triumphantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's gotten to where she can change the length mid-swing. "Congrats on the hit! Do you feel comfortable sparring some now? Or it's getting kinda late, maybe we should just hunt and save the sparring for when we're all more used to each other..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind sparring now!  So, how does it work exactly, if we're using real weapons?  Do we just - mime hitting each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll probably be easiest for Sophie and Lianne to spar directly, since they can focus on blocking each other's attacks. It'd probably be safest for the two of us to work on using bindings and barriers in a support role, or we can try to spar with melee versions of our weapons. We could also instead of using weapons just try to bind the other team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How would I make a barrier out of knives, though?  Or conjure bindings, for that matter - or is that just... its own thing, like conjuring knives is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Its own thing. Though most do have a theme for the bindings - let me demonstrate." She conjures shimmery ribbons of energy in front of her. "I can summon these around someone, too." She describes the sensation of summoning and controlling them, "Though it's a bit different for everyone, from what I know. For the barriers, mine is the same energy as the bindings, but others do form barriers from their weapons, or in yet another way."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods along, then frowns, concentrates -

And after a moment, she's able to trace her hand through the air and unroll a blue ribbon, the same color and apparent substance as the bow on her back.  It floats in the air in front of her as though it's under water.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! Let me try - " It takes her longer than it took Kaylee, but she's able to make a shining gold thread that spools between her hands. "How about you, Sophie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She creates a loop of purple ribbon with a flourish. "Though that's already a skill I had - it's useful if you get into a fight with another magical girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, time to spar?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to decide on rules first. How do we decide who wins? - Managing to bind the others seems to be a good stopping point for that at least, though that'll give Sophie and Mallory an advantage. Or first to pin the other or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure my - magical girl instincts - extend to hand-to-hand combat without knives, I don't think I'd be able to pin anybody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So binding, then? Or some other rule? If we were going to do binding, I'd almost rather pair by experience... So me against you, Sophie against Mallory, for instance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you guys have done this more than me, if you think binding would work I'm up for it.  And yeah, you and I could spar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works for me. Sophie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, same. Let's separate a bit, so we don't get in each other's way."

Mallory agrees, and they walk off to the other end of the field.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So just you and me, huh? Start on the count of three?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing.  I've got combat knives as well as throwing knives, so don't be afraid to get close."  She flicks her wrist and conjures a Bowie knife.  "One - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne twirls her sword in her grasp, though mentally she's focusing on visualizing the ribbons of light. "Two - "

Permalink Mark Unread

" - three!"

She rushes forward, trailing her fingers through the air and calling up a new blue ribbon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne lazily swings her sword one-handed - ready to stop it if Kaylee doesn't dodge - and summons her gold ribbon with her other hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks, sliding along the ground like a baseball player, and whips the ribbon toward Lianne's legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jumps, drops her sword, and snaps the ribbon towards Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sort of spins around up onto her feet, under and around the ribbon, putting her even closer to where Lianne lands; then she conjures up two new ribbons and aims to whip them around Lianne's torso.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne jumps back, then, focusing, creates a loop from both her hands that passes behind Kaylee and yanks it forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

It catches her; she yelps and laughs as she's pulled forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have caught you, my pretty!" Lianne says in a fake-evil voice as she tries to make the ribbon loop and properly snare Kaylee (who'll probably have time to get herself free, Lianne's not exactly fast at this).

Permalink Mark Unread

She does: she conjures a knife in each hand and slashes apart Lianne's ribbon, laughing all the while.  She tosses aside her knives and manages to send one ribbon flying toward Lianne to wrap around her, bursting forward from her hand like a net from an air cannon, then conjures another two, one in each hand, and whips them in her direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne successfully dodges the first, but is caught by the second two.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aha!  Now I have captured you!"  She tugs on the ribbons, pulling Lianne towards her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Laughing, Lianne stumbles along, though she twists her hands and gets them free enough to create spools of ribbon aiming to bind Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets go of the ribbons and jumps backward, soaring up and away -

 - and then realizes she's given no consideration to how to land, and falls on her back, skidding backward and giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne pounces, trying to catch Kaylee with her ribbons before she can recover.

Permalink Mark Unread

She succeeds!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mwahaha! I have captured the fair damsel!" Lianne quickly conjures more ribbon, aiming to stop Kaylee from cutting through it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooooo the knight was the evil witch all along!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My true nature is revealed! No one can save you now, my pretty!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mercy, please!  We were best friends once!  Unless we were not in the premise of this joke!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Through her giggles: "It was all a lie to lure the fairest damsel in the land into my trap!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lianne I don't know if I'll ever recover from this betrayal."

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't help it - she collapses into helpless laughter. After a few gasps she recovers herself then dismisses the ribbons and walks over to offer Kaylee a hand up. "It appears my evil plan is foiled by the true magic: friendship!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The greatest magic of all, second only to big gold swords."  She gets up.  "So, point Lianne!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You nearly got me! You're also better with the ribbons; I suspect I would've lost if you'd managed to keep your footing. I have a really good idea of what I need to work on now, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I didn't really think that jump through.  Wanna go again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think timing wise it'd be best to start preparing for the hunt, so we're not getting home too late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!"  She gets ready to reconvene, trying to catch Mallory or Sophie's eye.

Permalink Mark Unread

They've finished up their spar - Mallory won - and head over when they notice that Kaylee and Lianne are done.

"Ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!  Lead the way!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's all clear our soul gems first, then we can head out." She passes around one of her spares. "None of you should've used much magic, but it's always good to stay topped off when you can."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee clears her soul gem - it's surprisingly refreshing - hands back the spare, and takes a steadying breath.

Time to hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about Kaylee and Lianne lead on dowsing, while I drive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."  Tiara becomes egg-shaped bauble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory drives somewhat slowly around the city, favoring the sorts of areas that witches frequent - bridges, abandoned buildings, hospitals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's one, down a back alley.

Permalink Mark Unread

She parks once one of the girls identifies it, then leads the way. "I'll go in first."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.

Inside: the sky is a distant, garish, yellow and blue circus tent.  Smaller tents cluster together like fungus.  The barrier is lit by a sourceless orange-tinted glow.  In the distance, hollow calliope music.

Something is wrong with their sense of perspective and distance, or with the actual distances within the maze; tents seem to balloon up to greater and greater sizes the closer they approach.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kaylee, do you want to practice navigating?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I think... the tents lead us deeper into the barrier."  She walks forward, slowly, toward a red and yellow circus tent, and it swells as though she's approaching it much faster than she is.  "This one takes us nearest, I think."  She parts the curtain.  From the inside, the walls of the tent seem as distant as the horizon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's my read, too," Mallory says, leading the others after Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She walks, slowly, from tent to tent.  For a time, it is quiet: no familiars are in evidence yet.

"Do all witches have this... messed-up space thing?  It's really weird to navigate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most that I've run into do. It's part of why they're so dangerous to non-magical girls. I think it's part of the nature of the barrier."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

They move deeper, tent after garishly-colored tent.  The music grows steadily louder.

Clown-shaped things on stilts approach, slowly.

"Are those, uh, familiars?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like it. Get ready, but after what happened last time, let's be careful not to damage the maze itself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee conjures a pair of throwing knives.

The clown-shapes, three of them, get closer, and expand just like the tents did - it's hard to tell if they're a few feet away or a few storeys tall.  They're laughing exaggerated, cartoonish laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have the one in the middle," Mallory calls out. "Sophie, take the one on the left. Kaylee and Lianne, the one on the right." She punctuates her statement with a few clustered shots at her target's center.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne steps over to position herself to guard Kaylee while Sophie chucks a spear at her target. Lianne then takes an experimental swipe with her sword, mostly aiming to see if the familiar's in cutting range.

Permalink Mark Unread

It sways backward to avoid the strike, then pendulums forward, looming over her and grinning with sharp, hooked teeth.  Its eyes are darting around independently, like a chameleon's.

Kaylee leaps into the air and pitches one of her daggers at it; it sticks in its chest, and it snaps up its head to look at her, stepping forward slowly.

(For an instant, as it steps over Lianne, it seems tall enough to hold up the sky, but then as one of its stilts jabs down at her it's not much bigger than an ordinary person.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne dodges the stilt and swings at it as it comes down.

Permalink Mark Unread

The stilt snaps, like ordinary wood; the clown falls, lands on the shorter stilt, and then sticks out its other leg and starts spinning like a top, heading toward Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She swipes at the remaining stilt, lengthening her sword if she has to.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hits, but the familiar keeps going.

Kaylee conjures two more daggers and pitches them at the clown-shape.  They make contact, and it bursts like a balloon.  She smirks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Mallory and Sophie have been fighting their two.

Permalink Mark Unread

By now they'll probably have taken them down.  They're intimidating but not all that tough, apparently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good job, girls," Mallory says, standing over the popped familiar. "Let's keep going."

Permalink Mark Unread

And onward.

A few more clown-shapes accost them along the way, but with four magical girls against one familiar they're easily dispatched.

The tents get smaller and smaller as they move deeper into the barrier.  On the inside, they're as small as actual circus tents, and on the outside they look barely large enough to fit all four of them.

"I think... we're getting close?"  She inflects it like a question, and glances at Mallory.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feels like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads them into another tent, this one all red.  There is only one smaller tent nested inside.

"Feels like... a straightaway.  Like, maybe all the tents from here on out will only have the one smaller tent inside them."

A few jugglers emerge from the tent in the center, moving like cartoons or bobbleheads.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory, Lianne, and Sophie all pick their targets. Lianne mostly stays back to keep the familiars off the ranged fighters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee flicks a new pair of knives into existence, blades swept back for slashing, and runs toward her target.  (It feels so amazing to move this fast.)  She cuts two gashes into the juggler's stomach, in opposite directions, then flips the knives around in her palms and stabs them into its heart.  It explodes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's familiar pitches a few of its juggling-clubs at her.  Mallory's and Sophie's march forward steadily, guffawing all the while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne blocks the clubs with the flat of her blade then charges forward and swings, while both Mallory and Sophie stick to ranged.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's familiar is sliced cleanly in half, its upper body pinwheeling through the air for a split second, almost comically, before both halves burst.  Mallory's and Sophie's go down just as easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's still grinning.  "This way," she says, gesturing toward the remaining tent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne grins back at her and follows, Mallory and then Sophie taking up the rear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tent.  Tent.  Tent.

Ah, this seems to be the main event.

Not just circus tents but an actual circus: acrobats and clowns, juggling and diving and swinging, elephants braying and tigers snarling, all moving in counter-rotating circles around the vast thing in the center:

A floating shape like a person's upper body, dressed in an old and filthy but immaculately tailored suit and hat; four stick-thin arms with enormous hands, each holding a jeweled cane; a face that's all eyes and mouth.  It's babbling nonsense in a ringmaster's overdramatic bellow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ringmaster's the main threat, but don't drop your guard around the familiars," Mallory says, lining up her first shots.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne nods and says, "I can take care of the familiars," remembering how she got bitten on her first fight, and positions herself to intercept anything coming at the ranged fighters, while Sophie starts chucking spears at the witch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm with Lianne," Kaylee says.  She twirls two new knives into existence, these ones thin and pointed for stabbing, held in reverse grip.

The witch gestures and gives some sort of command, and tigers start rushing toward the four of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins briefly at Kaylee, then goes to attack the tigers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tigers go down even more easily than clowns!  A single strike with a sword, or a stab in the neck, is enough to make them pop.

After Kaylee's taken down two of them and left the knives where they fall, a third pounces her; she ducks and slides like she did against Lianne's threads, conjures another slashing-knife, and cuts open the tiger's belly as it soars over her.

(This is so easy, this is what she was supposed to be doing all along, how could she ever have been afraid of this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's having fun fighting, but she's still keeping an eye on their surroundings - mostly watching that nothing attacks Sophie and Mallory, and in case the witch sends anything else after them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two more throws, slash this one's neck and then split that one's skull in half -

She's getting caught up in it.  If one of the tigers goes for Mallory, she may not notice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily Lianne's focusing more on defense, and moves to take down anything that slips past Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's laughing, now.  It's not quite like her usual laugh.

Mallory and Sophie have been wearing down the witch pretty successfully.  It tosses one of its canes at them.

Just like the tents and the clowns, it balloons in size as it approaches them, until it's the size of a torpedo when it hits.  The wooden bleachers beneath them crumble as it crashes into them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne, Sophie, and Mallory all jump clear, though they wind up in different areas. Sophie and Lianne immediately move to fall back to Mallory's position, going ahead and taking down any familiars that get in their way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee lands on the opposite side of a newly-formed chasm from the others.  She sprints for it, jumps, springs off of the enormous cane lodged in the ruins, and tumbles to a stop on the other end.

"How are we doing?" she mutters to Lianne, even as she calls up more throwing knives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I think. It looks - ragged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not sure how much damage I can do with these..."

She does a sort of pirouette, releasing her daggers mid-spin to send them shooting toward the witch.  It reels back a bit when its hit.  She chuckles.

She calls up more knives and turns her attention back to the familiars.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having fun?" Lianne asks, focusing entirely on the familiars. (She doesn't trust their distance enough to throw her sword, and she isn't that good at lengthening it yet).

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were right, this is exhilarating."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd say more satisfying than exhilarating - and this is a pretty easy witch, compared to the last one - but, yeah. Still, let's focus on the fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Familiars keep coming, and Kaylee keeps splitting them open in various creative ways.  Tigers give way to elephants, big enough to crush them underfoot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne does well against larger targets - more surface area to hit - and starts trying to take out multiple targets with each swing, dodging when she has to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's worse here - more mass means more daggers to take it down.  She springs backward a few times, trying to stay distant.

The witch's incoherent shouts sound less confident, more frantic and desperate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne starts keeping an eye on Kaylee as well, ready to intervene if something gets past her daggers. Experimentally, she also starts using ribbons - focusing briefly to give them a cutting edge - to attack more distant familiars.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee calls up a storm of ribbons to wrap around an elephant's leg, then, on a whim, tries to conjure three daggers between her fingers, like claws.

She succeeds, and does another pirouette to cast them toward the elephant she entangled.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you've got these handled for a bit, I can switch to helping take down the witch," Lianne says between familiars.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne spins away from the familiars and, on something of a whim, tries to make her sword sharper, then throws it at the witch, followed by swirls of shining ribbon.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sword sticks in the witch's chest, but it manages to bat the ribbons aside with one of its three remaining canes.

It pulls the sword out of its chest and throws it back toward Lianne.  By the time it gets there it's much bigger than it was when she threw it - the size of a canoe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crap.

It's her sword it should be vanishing right about now. (She jumps to the side and draws another sword, concentrating on imagining the flying sword disappearing and reappearing in her hand.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She manages to disappear it, but not until it's already crashed into the bleachers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne, Sophie, and Mallory all jump clear again, this time taking more care about where they land. Sophie manages to land near Mallory, but Lianne ended up on the other side of the crash and has to jump over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee springs out of the way and skids across the bleachers on the balls of her feet, landing next to Sophie and Mallory.

"You okay?" she asks, when Lianne rejoins them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Just annoyed at myself that I didn't vanish the sword quickly enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

The witch starts reeling up to throw another cane, but this time they can see it coming -

Permalink Mark Unread

They dodge, this time making a point of actually keeping together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now the whole witch is rushing toward them, screeching and howling.  The calliope music swells and distorts to something harsh, dissonant, like a scream.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne throws her sword at it, while Sophie chucks a particularly large spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal's gun increases in size, and she fires a quick cluster of shots.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee - gets out of the way.  There's not much she can do here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sword and spear lodge in the witch's chest, and the force of Mallory's shots cause it to jerk back.  It howls inarticulate rage.  It is, they suspect, on the verge of destruction.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can repeat the sequence until it dies or attacks them.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's close, but -

 - the witch dies before it reaches them.  The barrier shimmers away; the alley reappears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory dismisses her costume, followed after a few beats by Sophie and Lianne. "Good job girls. Kaylee, do you think you can find the grief seed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shifts out of magical girl form and casts her eyes around.  After a moment -

"Is this it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like it to me. Okay, who here is lowest on magic? I barely used any - Lianne, Sophie, are you two good?"

They both nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

An arc of blue light travels from her tiara to her hand, and her soul gem appears there, egg-shaped.  She examines it.

"I think I could use some.  How do I...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory can walk her through clearing her soul gem!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  We done for the night, or do you want to try to find another one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's up to all of you. I would recommend everyone go ahead and clear their gems, assuming the grief seed has enough capacity, and then if there's any left over you and Lianne can take it back with the two of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We probably should be getting home before too long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you're right."  She sounds almost disappointed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, my mom will worry if I'm out much longer. Mallory, can I get a ride home again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Lianne, Kaylee, would you two also like a ride back to your houses?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd appreciate that, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then homeward they can all go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Homeward!

Up in her room, Kaylee stashes her grief seed on a high shelf in her closet, above her or her parents' sight line.  Then she collapses into bed.

It worked.  It worked!  Her wish worked!  She thinks back to the way she felt after being attacked by the basement-witch - she never could have fought the way she did today without making her wish, she'd have been paralyzed with terror.  And now - it's easy, it comes naturally, it's almost effortless.  She doesn't have to worry about not being able to save Lianne ever again.  Everything will be all right now.  Maybe she can finally tell Lianne about how scared she was before the witch - there's no risk of Kaylee being too frightened to protect her now, she fixed the problem herself, she doesn't have to worry.

Everything is wonderful and everything is going to be wonderful.

Monday on the bus, Lianne greets Kaylee with a cheery, "Hey! How've you been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, Lianne!  I've been good!  How about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been great! I had a lot of fun Saturday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me too."  'Is it... supposed to be that much fun?  The actual hunting part?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I mean, I find it more satisfying in a job-well-done kind of way than actually fun. The sparring's fun, though, and I could see the adrenaline being exciting. Though I actually find hunting a bit scary still...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'The sparring was really fun.  I might like to just - do that again sometime.  With you.  Like, for fun.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah! That'd be great.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

"So, how is everything?"  'On the non-magical-girl front, I mean.'  "Your mom's not riding you too hard, is she?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, I've been getting my homework done pretty promptly, so she's calming down a bit. Still being fairly restrictive, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

On impulse, she puts an arm around Lianne's shoulder and squeezes a little.  "Sounds rough.  Maybe not as bad as it could be, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne leans in a bit. "Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sort of rubs her shoulder.  Is that a thing?  For someone so bubbly she's not always the best at physical affection.  Lianne seems happy, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne is in fact perfectly fine with this!

"Thanks," she says after a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any time," she says.  "Well, any time I'm sitting right next to you, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles too.

She'll happily keep sort-of-quasi-cuddling Lianne until the bus arrives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne doesn't have any objections to sort-of-cuddling.

When they get to school, Lianne waves bye and shouts, "See you in Bio!" over the students' racket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you later!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They won't get much time to chat in Bio, but eventually lunch rolls around.

'So,' Lianne says once they're not busy with other stuff, 'I was thinking we should plan, like, patrols and stuff. To keep an eye out for witches around our area. I've been dowsing on our runs and sometimes in class, but it doesn't feel - thorough enough.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That makes sense.  Do you know how to determine if a witch is weak enough for us to take down on our own?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We could ask Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That could work.  Right now, you think, or after school?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I more meant when we find the witch - he said he can tell - but you're right, we could also ask him how to tell. Maybe ask during gym? So we're not having to try and talk to him and people at the same time.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that's a good call.  So, patrols - how often were you thinking?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I don't know. Beyond what I'm already doing - once a week? I feel like this would be easier if either of us could drive, but we can take the bus around and then walk a bit.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'If we transform we could probably get around town faster - but, hmm, I don't know how fast that would use up magic...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'The long-jump thing felt like - middling magic use. Fairly low, all things considered, so probably a decent way to get about. Proper flying is apparently expensive, though. But there's a few shopping centers and the area around the main mall we can check, the higher density of people during the day might draw witches.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  And if we patrol enough we might find places they congregate.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Good point!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks!  So, once a week, focused on the shopping centers, at least to start.  The scouting group is on Saturdays... would Fridays work for you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. Not every Friday, at least not yet, but ones where I can get my homework done early, at least.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sure.  We could pick a different day, or...?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Nah, Fridays are best. Every other available day would run into the school night objection. And I'd rather not hunt mid-day Sunday, too much risk of someone seeing something suspicious.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That makes sense.  Friday it is.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Might be able to manage this Friday, even. Depends on my mom.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Fingers crossed!'  She grins.  '...Should we come up with a different name for the thing than 'witch hunt?'  It's kinda, uh, unfortunate phrasing.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Yeah, good point. I have no idea.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I mean, I don't think it's a huge deal, it just kinda throws me for a second whenever I notice myself thinking that phrase...  maybe we should ask Kyubey if there's another term for witches.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That makes sense. 'Witch' also seems a silly thing to call something so - that.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, it seems like something you'd call - an evil magical girl, or something, not a monster.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Seriously.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee shrugs - well, she gets halfway through a shrug before she remembers no one knows they've been having this conversation.  Luckily no one seems to have noticed; everybody's distracted by the lunch period wrapping up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you in gym!" 'That'd be a decent time to talk to Kyubey, too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, sounds good to me.'  "Bye!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And the day proceeds, and gym rolls around.

"Hey!" Lianne says once they're at the 'walking around in the name of Exercise' phase. "So how's your day been?" 'And let's iron out which questions we have for Kyubey.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!  It's been pretty good!"  'Right.  So, we were gonna ask how to tell weak witches from strong ones, and maybe ask him to come along and help with that if we can't do it ourselves, right?  And if witches are called anything else.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. You want me to ask?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sure!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hey, Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hello!  How can I help you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We were thinking of hunting together some Friday, just the two of us, and were wondering how to tell weak witches from strong ones?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'When you're dowsing for a witch, the intensity of the sensation is affected by the witch's proximity and its power.  You can use that plus other cues to estimate the strength of the witch - for example, if you travel perpendicular to the direction the witch is in, a stronger but more distant witch will appear to change direction more quickly than a weaker but nearer-by one.  It's an acquired, mundane skill based on your magical sense.'

'I can do the same thing, and I have more experience dowsing than you do; I usually travel with my magical girls on at least their first few hunts and help them with this sort of thing.  I can come with you, if you'd like!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That was going to be my second question! We'd like that. Also, are there any other words for witches? 'Witch hunt' just has - unfortunate connotations in English.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think there have been other words in other languages historically, but 'witch' is the only term I've personally heard any magical girls use.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay! Yeah, that makes some sense.'

She relays his answers to Kaylee, and asks her, 'Anything else we want to know?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Mmm, I don't think so!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay!'

And back to Kyubey: 'Thanks for answering our questions! Do Friday afternoons work for you? Not every Friday, but, like, some of them.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I can do Fridays!  I can drop by other days too, if you want to hunt or just talk to someone who's in on the secret.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I won't really be hunting outside of the weekends, but thank you for the offer.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're welcome!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Talk to you later!'

Then to Kaylee: "So I'll talk to my mom in a few days, see about getting permission for the mall."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great!  I'll talk to my folks too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne turns the conversation then to more innocuous things, and is fine just chatting until gym ends.

Permalink Mark Unread

As is Kaylee!

Permalink Mark Unread

The school day ends, and Lianne heads home.

-

Thursday at dinner, she brings up the mall with her mom, and, to her mild shock, receives permission - assuming she gets all her weekend homework done first, of course.

Friday, when Kaylee sits down next to her on the bus, she excitedly says, "Hey Kaylee! My mom gave me permission for the mall, if I get my homework done first, which shouldn't be too hard. We can meet at the entrance to the food court around six? Then maybe catch a movie or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that sounds fun!  What's playing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not really sure, we'll have to check online or when we get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you like?  There's been lotsa superhero movies coming out lately, those are fun..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like action movies, so, yeah, a superhero movie sounds nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!"  'And then hunt afterward, I guess?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Or before, depending on movie timing. But that's the general idea. We can tell our parents we're just hanging out at the mall or shopping or something.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that sounds good.  I'm looking forward to it already!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Same!'

The bus slowly trundles up to the school building.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "See you later!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

At lunch Kaylee retrieves her phone, and she and Lianne huddle over it to pick out a movie to see.  The day proceeds: eventually Kaylee goes home, catches her parents up about her and Lianne's plans, and, at six o'clock, arrives at the mall food court.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne luckily manages to finish her homework in time, and her sister drops her off, just after six.

"Hey Kaylee! Sorry I'm running a bit late, we got unlucky with the lights," she says, walking up to her friend. "So, dinner then the movie?" 'With the way timing and the mall's hours work out, we can hunt in the local area before the movie, then do a broader hunt right afterwards if we don't find anything.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lianne!  It's okay!  That sounds good to me; what are you in the mood for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, the sub place and Chinese place are decent, and the pizza place is actually surprisingly good for mall food... I think I'll go for pizza, but feel free to get something else. Where do you want to sit?" There's a bunch of tables in the middle of the food court, between the two rows of food stalls. Some of them are in less crowded areas than others.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmmm, I think I'll get pizza too."  She points out a table away from the more crowded sections of the food court.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they can eat (the pizza really is pretty good, with a decent array of choices), and chat for a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is good pizza, and Kaylee says as much.

They chat!  About school and friends and the superhero franchise they're about to dive into halfway through.  Kaylee's even more smiley than usual.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's seen a few of the movies, but, yeah, she'll probably be a bit lost. Hopefully the filmmakers will take into account people unfamiliar with the other movies and the source material.

Afterward dinner they can 'shop' for a bit, while actually discretely dowsing for witches.

Permalink Mark Unread

No witches are in evidence, at least not yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they don't find anything in time, they'll go into the movie, though Lianne gets an uneasy feeling.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You okay?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. Just feel like something should've happened by now is all. It'll pass.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Tentatively, she takes Lianne's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne squeezes her hand. 'Thanks.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze.  'No problem.'

"So, wanna grab some popcorn, or are you still full from dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Popcorn sounds good. Maybe some candy, too, I'm in the mood for dessert."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, yeah, that sounds good."  She beelines for the concession stand.

Permalink Mark Unread

And candy and popcorn can be gotten. Then, on to the movie. The theater's a bit crowded, but the movie's been out for a bit, so good seats are still findable - which is lucky, because Lianne's kinda picky about where she sits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee isn't as picky, she'll sit where Lianne sits.  She has a good time!

Permalink Mark Unread

So does Lianne! There are enough fight scenes and explosions to entertain her, and the plot's actually pretty solid.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was fun," Kaylee says, as the credits roll.  "Did you like it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Definitely my type of movie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you had a good time!  I did too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should definitely do this again sometime!"

'Wanna hunt again for a bit before calling for a ride?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'd like that."

'We probably should, yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's explore outside the mall some." 'Since we already checked the inside.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sounds good.  Do you want to try to get in touch with Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.' Then: 'Kyubey? We're ready to hunt.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're at the mall, right?  I'll meet you there.'

He does, just outside the entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks for the help!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're welcome!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'So, are we all ready to go? Kaylee, do you want to dowse or should I?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I might prefer if you did?  You've been doing this a bit longer than me.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay! That makes sense.'

Lianne baubles her soul gem, and starts looking for witches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they come into range of one.

'I can try to determine how strong this one is, or show you how.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Why don't you show me how, then confirm whether I'm right or not?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, it's hard to convey how strong a signal at how great a distance corresponds to how strong a witch; to some extent it just takes practice and intuition.  But the thing to do is figure out what direction the signal is in, which you can usually feel through your magic sense and confirm by moving around, and then move perpendicular to that direction to see how quickly the direction changes - just like discerning distance visually using parallax.  Once you're good at it, you can tell just by moving around normally as you approach it, without having to do it deliberately.  I think you'd need to be closer to this witch to tell much about it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay! Thanks.'

She starts to follow Kyubey's advice, first trying to identify the witch's direction then moving a bit closer to try and get a better feel for it, before walking perpendicular to her previous path.

Permalink Mark Unread

'See how at this distance you can feel the direction changing?  This strength, at this distance, doesn't indicate a terribly powerful witch.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, now that you mention it, this feels - less - than the one I fought with the group. A lot less.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We should start heading toward it.  I can accompany you into the barrier as well, if you want.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think I'd like that.  Lianne?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'd like that too. C'mon, let's go.'

Permalink Mark Unread

It's only a short way to the witch, from where they were.  The barrier shimmers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee spends a moment transforming, and then flicks a pair of Bowie knives into existence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne transforms as well, before drawing her sword and then nodding to Kaylee. "Since I'm a short range fighter, want me to go in first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne takes a deep breath and steps through the barrier.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's like stepping out onto the windowsill of a skyscraper: a sudden gust of wind nearly blows her off the narrow wooden ledge to which the portal led.  Behind her, an oversized clock face; in the distance, a skyline made of enormous grandfather clocks.  The air is filled with polyrhythmic ticking.  The ground, if there is ground, is shrouded in thick fog; the distant sky is made of clockwork.

There are more clock towers, nearer-by than the skyline, but sparser.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any sign of familiars?

Permalink Mark Unread

There seems to be something moving around on the nearest clock tower.  Quite a number of somethings actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

And which direction to the witch's center?

Permalink Mark Unread

Towards the skyline, it looks like.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like we'll have to jump... Ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey hops onto Kaylee's shoulder.  'Ready!'

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne leads the way, jumping to the nearest tower.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows; she flails just a little as she's flying through the air, but lands gracefully enough, laughing a little.

A faceless angel-shape with a wind-up key in its back crawls toward them on all fours.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne swings at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It goes down easy, wisping away into smoke.

More angel-shapes emerge, over the ledge from the walls of the tower, crawling along the walls effortlessly like spiders.  Kaylee flicks throwing knives at two of them, which vanish as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's not waste to much time here," Lianne says, eyeing the next jump. "They don't look like they can fly; we can probably get to that next tower easily even with them trying to attack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne makes sure they're clear, then jumps to the next tower.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows.

As they land, they notice that a few of the familiars launched themselves into the air after them.  They can't fly, but at least a few of them are impressive jumpers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne prepares to fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee hops backward to a position behind Lianne, and conjures a pair of throwing knives.

As they land, she takes a shot at one of them, and it puffs into smoke; the other two land flanking Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne spins, trying to get both of them with one cut.

Permalink Mark Unread

She succeeds.  "Nice one!"

More familiars swarm over the edge.  "Next tower?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. And yeah, let's keep going."

Permalink Mark Unread

They proceed, jumping from tower to tower.  Not many familiars bother trying to follow them, and the ones that do are easily dispatched.

As the towers get more densely packed, the roofs get more and more crowded even before they land on them.

"Next one looks pretty packed," Kaylee says.  "Want me to go first and try to clear a space to land?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds a bit risky. I should be able to throw my sword from here, maybe carve out a bit of a path..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne flings her sword so it spins horizontally, trying to clear as many of the familiars as possible, and immediately draws a second sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few familiars jump ship, or fling themselves toward their tower; most of them are taken out by her sword.  Kaylee flicks a knife toward one of the jumpers, taking it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne braces herself to take out any that get past Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Several do.  One lands nearer Kaylee, and she knifes it; the others crawl towards Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne takes them out as they come.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like the next tower's clear; shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

She jumps, lands, skids a little.

The towers are getting higher, their roofs overflowing with familiars.

"Didn't you mention you and the other girls jumping from wall to wall when you fought the pottery-witch?  That might be easier from here on out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, good idea. We can get some momentum going that way. Especially since these towers are so close together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"After you!  Unless you'd rather I go first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll lead. Cover my back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne takes off, keeping to clear parts of the tower walls as she leaps between the buildings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows.

A few familiars throw themselves off of the buildings, trying to catch them; Kaylee calls out to Lianne to dodge, or occasionally gets off tricky mid-air shots.  She laughs triumphantly whenever she pulls it off.

The center nears, palpably.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good shot!" Lianne calls out when she notices one of Kaylee's successes.

She tightens her grip as they near the center. "Do you feel that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so.  Are we getting close to the witch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'We're getting close to the center, at least,' says Kyubey, who's been showing a prodigious ability to cling to Kaylee's back.  'It's usually where you can find the witch, but not always.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mon, let's keep going. Keep an eye out though, I think familiars get more powerful the closer to the center you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

The clock towers get closer and closer together, until they're as tightly packed as skyscrapers in an actual city.  The clock faces are all pointed toward the center, and unlike before they're all ticking in unison.  More and more familiars are jumping off the tops of the towers, and some of them manage to start gliding after them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne cuts down any who get too close.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's still not that hard, especially with Kaylee watching her back.

And then:

The center of the maze is an enormous circular platform, an upward-facing clock face, pearlescent and glowing with ornate hands, surrounded by a circle of vast clock faces, all pointed inward, all the same height.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it obvious what's the actual thing to attack?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at first.  Nothing in particular is pinging her magic senses as definitely the witch.

She gets the impression that it's nearby, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne cautiously steps forward, sword at the ready. Can she tell where the witch is?

Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhere up above.  Possibly in one of the towers.

"Do you... sense anything?  I can't tell what to look for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's above us. We'll have to look in the towers."

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's moving.  It might come to us.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wanna wait, or take a look around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's wait, then. We'll be at an advantage out in the open here." She steps further into the circle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee follows, and waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few moments -

There is a deafening sound, like a gong, or a church bell, from somewhere far above them.

Something leaps through the air - a vast human shape of tarnished brass, fifteen feet tall and slender.  It falls acrobatically through the air and lands, one one foot and one knee.  Instead of a head, it has an ornate clock face; it carries a staff with a chain on one end, like a long-handled flail, except that the other end of the chain is attached to an enormous church bell instead of a spiked ball.

It stands, assumes a combat stance, and levels the flail toward them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne dodges, darting forward to swing her sword at its leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee conjures knives between her fingers and leaps upward into the air, flinging all six knives toward the witch's chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

The flail smashes into the spot where Lianne was standing.  When she darts forward and attacks, her sword clangs off of the witch's leg, barely leaving a scratch.  Kaylee's knives don't do much more against it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She focuses her magic on her sword, trying to make it significantly sharper and harder, then moves to attack the witch again.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't help much.

The witch takes a step back, raises its flail into the air, then brings the butt of the staff downward toward where Lianne's standing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She throws herself backwards, gets some distance on the witch, then pushes even more magic in her sword and lengthens it, aiming to stab the witch in the chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't even bother to try blocking the stab.  The second hand on its face twitches back and forth erratically.

It lumbers forward, swinging the flail around its head, readying another strike.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne dodges again, then - "The face! Kaylee, attack the face!" She summons her ribbons, trying to bind the witch's limbs and slow it down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee jumps upward again and fires off another storm of daggers, this one aimed at the clock face.  It shatters, revealing intricate, delicate clockwork.  Some of Kaylee's daggers lodge inside it, and the sudden grinding shriek of metal against metal sounds like a scream.

Between this and the ribbons around its legs, it stumbles forward and lands on its hands and knees.  It swipes at Lianne with one hand, heavily, clumsily.

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves out of the way, then stabs upwards, thrusting her sword into its gears.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can feel the gears buzzing and clicking through it, resonating through the sword; its hands thrash for a moment, but then it falls still, slumps forward, and shimmers out of existence along with the rest of the barrier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she see the grief seed?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's easy to find, among the gravel.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good fight," she says, picking up the seed and clearing her gem, even though it's only slightly dingy. "Though I feel like it was harder than it should've been... I definitely need more experience with identifying witches and their weak points." She offers the gem to Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."  She takes the grief seed, and shrugs one shoulder.  "You noticed before I did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah... We should probably go ahead and call our folks. It's getting pretty late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh wow, you're right, it is," she says.  "I didn't realize how long that took."

She transforms back, pulls out and flips open her phone, calls her dad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne drops her transformation and calls her mom, apologizing for the late hour.

"She'll be here in twenty minutes," Lianne says once she hangs up. "If your dad will take longer, I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind sitting with you until he gets here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'll probably be here about then too, but thanks!"  She sits down on a nearby bench and pats the seat beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne smiles and sits with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a good time today," Kaylee says. "I'm really glad we did this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same. I'd like to do this again sometime - just hang out at the mall, catch a movie... Doesn't necessarily need to be about hunting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me too.  One of the Fridays you don't go hunting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not really planning to hunt alone at all - having the backup is too valuable - unless it's an emergency. Or if I find just a familiar or something. When next will depend on my mom, though, and if I can get my grades up..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee puts an arm around Lianne's shoulder.  "Well, we'll find a day somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely! And there's always clubs and our Saturday group for hanging out. Though it's not really the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

She gives a contented little sigh, and leans on Lianne a bit, unconsciously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne leans into her a bit, too, in response. "I'm glad we're friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me too.  You're - really great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks! You are too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!  "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, looking forward to group tomorrow? I hope Alex can make it this time - you haven't met her yet, she's the bow user and the one who came up with the superhero thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!  Last time was fun.  I'm looking forward to meeting her too.  What was her superhero name again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ace of hearts. I guess because she's got something of a heart theme going with her outfit."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.  "Makes as much sense as anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll see it! Kinda like Sophie, she has a very classical look going on."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "And you're a knight-in-shining-armor and I'm a really stereotypical magical girl."

Kaylee's dad's car pulls up in the parking lot in front of him.

"That's my ride," she says, pointing and un-leaning.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. I think I see my mom's car, too. See you tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then!  Bye!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye!" Quick goodbye hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Goodbye hug!  Maybe even a slightly longer-than-quick goodbye hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's mom pulls up, so she disentangles herself, feeling oddly reluctant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's a bit reluctant too.

"See you tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, see you then."

Her mom calls out, so she waves and then heads to the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee waves goodbye and gets into her dad's car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Saturday rolls around, and with it the group meeting. Alex - the one Kaylee hasn't met yet - is there this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi everyone!" Kaylee says as she arrives.  "Hello, I'm Kaylee - I bet you're Alex, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! You're Kaylee, right? Lianne talked about you some, it's great to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you too!"  She sits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How were everyone's weeks?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine was good!  Me and Lianne actually went on a hunt together the other day, took down a clock tower witch by the mall."

Permalink Mark Unread

This earns them congratulations! "Hunting together is a good strategy," Mallory comments. "You two are well-paired weapon-wise, and it's good to have someone there to watch your back."

Sophie, Alex, and Taylor also go into their weeks - Alex has taken down five small-ish witches and a handful of familiars in the two weeks she's been gone, Sophie hasn't had time to hunt because of school, Taylor's mostly been busy with friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee beams at the praise.

"Oh wow, five witches?  That's impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know people who manage more! I'm trying to maintain a territory, though a smallish friendly one, and some girls with territories end up taking out a witch every night or so. Especially if they're also trying to keep other girls out - I'm not doing that, I'm just trying to keep the area as clear of witches as I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, it's better than I've been doing.  Nice work!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not really a competition, but thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

"So, I've been thinking.  Kyubey - or the Kyubeys, I guess there's more than one - it seems like they could probably help us with," she gestures broadly around herself, "this whole project.  They'd probably have an easier time patrolling for witches than us, since no one can see them and they don't have to have secret identities.  And they could help us keep track of new magical girls nearby and try to bring them into the fold.  Has anybody tried to get them on board?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've worked with them some. They do inform girls who get curious about me sometimes, but they're - difficult to work with. I'm not sure they'd want to spend their time patrolling, too, but you can suggest it to one."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "It's worth a try, at least.  I guess I kinda can't help thinking big, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good that you are! We need to think big to get this succeeding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good point.  Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try networking with some of the girls I run into, see if I can't get them on board."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be really helpful! Feel free to give them my number if they have more questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good idea, Alex!  I think I am gonna talk to Kyubey, I'm pretty friendly with the one who granted my wish.  He was willing to come along with Lianne and me on our hunt, I might be able to get him to patrol some, and get some other Kyubeys on board with it too.  I don't meet many other magical girls out in the suburbs, but if I do I'll definitely tell them about you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be a great help, thank you Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The meeting goes fairly similar to the previous ones from there - they talk more in depth about their lives, about various random topics, and eventually Taylor heads home and then the remaining girls head out for their hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hunt is easy: they find a barrier full of children's finger paintings, familiars that look like disembodied fingers, the witch an enormous hand covered in blotches of red, blue, and yellow paint.  Against five allied magical girls it goes down easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

High fives all around! "This is so much easier as you add people, wow. I'm almost worried we'll run out of powerful witches to take down together."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles.  "Tragedy of tragedies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might have to start fighting beneath our skill level!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could probably just split up if we get that far - Sophie and me on one team, Mallory and Kaylee and Lianne on the other, so we have experience levels more balanced. Take out twice as many witches. And who knows, we'll probably have more girls by then, make splitting up more of a solution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll depend on how things develop, of course, but that might be something to do someday, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  In the meantime - we should probably head home, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's pretty late."

And homeward they can all go, Mallory dropping them off as appropriate.

Permalink Mark Unread

On Sunday, after Kaylee wraps up her homework and eats dinner:

'Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'How can I help you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Do you have some time to chat?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sure!  I'll be over in a minute.'

Soon he's pawing at her window.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets him in and sits down on her bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gambols down through the window and up onto her lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  'Hi!'  Scritch scritch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Purr purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Aww, you really like getting petted, don't you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I dooooo.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet.

'So, I've been thinking.'

Permalink Mark Unread

He uncurls, and climbs out of her lap to face her.  'About what?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well, I think you're better at getting around than us.  Kyubeys are better at it than magical girls, I mean.  Normal people can't see you, and you're agile like a normal cat.  It seems like you'd be better than us at patrolling for witches.  If you moved around cities and kept an eye out, and alerted your magical girls when you noticed one, it might make it easier to keep the witch population down.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's not a bad idea,' Kyubey says.  'But we're also supposed to keep an eye on magical girls - make sure they're not causing trouble with their magic, keep an eye on whether they're feeling okay or being ground down emotionally by their duties, that kind of thing.  Going on our own patrols would disrupt that.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That makes sense, but... well, I've only been doing this for a couple weeks, but Mallory's group seems to be working really well so far.  That seems like the sort of thing that a group like hers could pick up the slack on, if you guys switched to patrolling.  Plus, if you let us know about new magical girls, we could let them know about us right away.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey looks almost sad, now.  'Kaylee... magical girl alliances really rarely work out well for the magical girls.  They can start off well, but - they tend to wind up at odds, or not trusting each other.  That's what creatures like me are for.  I think you'd make a better magical girl if you stopped relying so much on Mallory's group, and even on Lianne.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Lianne's - my best friend.  She's the best friend I've ever had.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Lots of girls feel that way at first.  Being a magical girl is hard, and having to share grief seeds is hard, and it can... create tension.  Friendships that seem strong in normal life don't always hold up.  I've seen it happen.  You're not the first magical girl I've worked with.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We've - we've been magical girls together for longer than we've been normal friends.  It's made us closer, if anything.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's still early in your career.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

'I know it's hard to hear,' Kyubey says apologetically.  'For what it's worth, I can promise I'll always be here to do my job.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I... thanks,' she says quietly.  'But - I still think we should try it.  Mallory isn't some naive kid, she knows what she's doing.  I think she can help me the same way you would.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Maybe so,' Kyubey says noncommitally.  'I'll certainly let you know if I see any witches.  But another problem is that you're a lot more able to defend yourself against witches than I am.  If I was tracking a witch and got caught in its barrier, I could get hurt.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh, I'm - I didn't mean to say you should put yourself in danger.  I'm sorry.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's okay,' Kyubey says warmly.  'I know you're just trying to fight witches, as best you can.  Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I - no, I don't think so,' Kaylee says.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Okay.  I'll see you later!'

Permalink Mark Unread

' - okay, bye.'

Permalink Mark Unread

He hops lightly up to and out of her window.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne, meanwhile, thinks.

She's uneasy about Kaylee's suggestion to have Kyubey help patrol. It comes down to this: she still doesn't trust him in the slightest. Sure, she doesn't think he'll outright betray them, but - she doesn't think he won't.

And more - when Kaylee brought up having Kyubey help, Mallory looked weird. It was barely a second, just a microexpression that flitted across her face. The other girls probably missed it.

The thing is, while Lianne knows she can be oblivious about some things (she's still always blindsided when someone has a crush on her) she knows people.

And all her instincts are telling her that Mallory's hiding something. Something related to Kyubey.

-

She boards the bus Monday morning, and when they pull up to Kaylee's stop, she greets her with a cheery, "Morning! How was your weekend?" and a silent 'Did you get a chance to talk to Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee lights up the way she always does whenever she sees Lianne.  "Good morning!  Mine was good, how about yours?"

'I did.  He - didn't like the idea.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty good."

'I'm - not that surprised. If he was going to, I think he would've by now.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, that makes sense, I guess.  ...He's... really cynical about magical girls teaming up, too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'How so? It's going really well so far.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'He just seems to think they always fall apart sooner or later.  He kept talking about - how hard it is to have to share grief seeds, and how stressful this kind of life is, and how that can drive people apart.  I don't know.  I think - Mallory really seems to know what she's doing, more than Kyubey thinks she does.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...I also still really don't trust him, so I'm wondering what his motives are in saying all that. I mean, I do think Mallory's hiding something, but I think it's something about Kyubey - she had a funny look on her face when you mentioned recruiting him. And she's - really dedicated to helping us, I think. Maybe it'll fall apart as it gets bigger, I don't know, but maybe it won't. I can't see any of the other three girls - or either of us - being the one to start things unraveling, too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, I don't... really see what could happen between us to make us turn on each other.  But - why would Kyubey want to lie about that?  I remember Mallory talking about him being - too dedicated to fighting witches, at the expense of magical girls, but even them it'd help him for us to stick together, wouldn't it?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I don't know. His actions don't make sense, and I can't read him like I can read a human.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee gives a sort of plausibly-deniable sigh.  'Yeah.  I don't... I don't think I'm very good at this conspiracy mind-game who-knows-what-about-who stuff.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, not my strong suit either. I just have an instinct for people.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Lianne's hand.

'...I hate not knowing who to trust.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Same. But - I know I can trust you. I'm fairly sure I can trust the other girls, at least assuming nothing changes. So - there's that.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  I'm glad I have you.  - I mean, that we're friends.  That - we're going through this together.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I feel the same. This all would be so much harder to deal with without you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.  We'll figure it out.'

The bus pulls into the school parking lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you in Bio!"

'Not much that can stand against us together. This won't be any different.'

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes Kaylee positively beam.

"See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And so the school day proceeds.

Lunch remains a terrible time to carry on a serious telepathic conversation, so Lianne waits until gym to ask, 'So what are you thinking we should do to figure out what's up with Kyubey?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm - not sure, really.  You said Mallory might know something, but then we have to figure out how to get her to talk to us... I suppose other magical girls might know more than us, if we could find them.  Beyond that... I don't know.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I could try talking to Kyubey, see if I can't get a better read on him. And talking to Mallory might help, even if she keeps hiding whatever. Alex and Sophie might also know something, they've both been magical girls a while. Beyond that - we'll have to wait until we run into someone else, I guess.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Think there's a way to go looking for more magical girls?  Is there some... plausible pretext for a couple of teenagers to spend a few days or weeks away from everyone else?  Winter break starts this week, right, we could do something then...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...We could go hunting in other cities and see if we run into anyone? And I don't know... Maybe go to an anime convention, tell our parents we want to go just us? That'd give us a few days at least. Or I think my mom could be talked into letting me go on some kind of educational summer trip without her or my sister. That'd be easier to swing as a graduation present, though, and I don't want to let this wait two years... If either of us had a car, I'd say 'summer road trip,' but it's even less likely my mom would buy me a car.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think anime convention's our best bet.  Do you want to try to find an actual one sometime during break, for, like, cover, or just make one up?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Depends? My mom wouldn't look into it, but my sister might. And who knows, there might be a convenient one coming soon.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We can look into it.  But - I don't think I want to wait too long, you know?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Makes sense. I can talk to Kyubey sometime this week, and we can start trying to figure out Mallory Saturday? For the convention, we could claim it's at the start of January? Winter break starts tomorrow, we have a half day... That'll give us plenty of time off. Though it's short notice for going somewhere.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Wow, tomorrow, I really lost track of time.  All this magic stuff...  But that sounds good.  I think I can get my parents to go for it.  ...Do you want to tell Mallory what we're really doing?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Kind of? She might have some ideas, especially about what to do if or when we run into other girls.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, but - I don't know if she'd be - thrilled - about letting us go looking for magical girl strangers in another city, you know?  Plus - if she's hiding something about Kyubey from us, wouldn't she try to stop us from finding it out?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We don't have to tell her why we're looking for other girls. We can just say we want to expand our hunting range, or recruit, or just get to know people. And - there's not much she can do other than disapprove, if she does. Other than tell our parents we're not going to a con after all, I guess.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's a good point.  And - yeah, I don't see her breaking the masquerade to dissuade us.  So - we tell her we're looking for other girls who might be interested in joining the League, and while we're away we also look for leads about Kyubey.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sounds like a plan to me.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Time passes.

The next day, winter break begins.  Everyone is sent home early.

Christmas eve, and Christmas day, the ground is lightly dusted with snow.  As gifts are exchanged, Kaylee is quiet; she can't stop thinking about all the things she isn't telling her parents.

On the 26th, she meets with Lianne, and hunts.  On the 27th, they meet again at the rec center.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's mom and sister, as usual, get her gift cards; it's better than useless generic things she'll never use, but not by much. (Lianne should probably feel worse about her double life. She usually dislikes lying, but it's hard to lie to someone you never talk to in the first place.)

Saturday, she shows up with a small present for Kaylee and a box of homemade cookies for the group to share.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, Lianne!  Oh, thank you - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome! It was no trouble at all, really."

The small packet contains two bracelets, made out of woven threads. One's in shades of blue like Kaylee's costume, the other in golds like Lianne's.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh my gosh I love them!  Thank you!"  She slips them on.  "I actually got you something too - "

She digs around in her backpack and retrieves a rectangular package roughly the size and shape of a notebook or journal, inexpertly wrapped in wrapping paper decorated with Santa hats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

She somewhat carefully peels back the paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a sketchbook!  A pretty nice one, with high-quality paper and a coat-of-arms sort of design on the front.  The first page has a little heart in one corner, with

To: Lianne

From: Kaylee

written inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, wow! Thanks Kaylee, this is perfect!" She hugs it to her chest a bit, then, impulsively, hugs Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!  "I'm glad you like it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't imagine not!" Reluctant unhug. She then puts the sketchbook in her backpack. "Wanna go see who else is here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a bit.  "Yeah, let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory and Alex are both in attendance, though Taylor and Sophie aren't; Mallory says that Sophie texted her to let her know she wasn't coming because of family, but she isn't sure about Taylor.

Lianne opens up the cookies; there's a small variety - gingerbread and snickerdoodle and plain with sprinkles or with red and green candies, all in different Christmas-themed shapes. "Made these myself," she says. "Feel free to have as many as you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee takes a snickerdoodle.  "These are good!" she says.  "Thanks for bringing them!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The cookies are greatly appreciated all around.

"Oh, you're welcome. I was making a bunch of batches, figured I'd bring some for everyone," Lianne says, taking a ginger cookie for herself. "It's a pity Sophie and Taylor couldn't make it. Not too surprising what with Christmas and all, though. How're everyone's holidays going, by the way?"

(Alex says her Christmas was great - she chats briefly about presents - and they're heading to visit family over New Years tomorrow. Mallory just laughs and says she went to a nice party Friday night, but otherwise had a quiet time.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine was nice too!"  Kaylee's happy to chat about presents.  "My dad got me some anatomy textbooks, they look really interesting - I'm gonna start reading them over break, to get better at healing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good idea! Can I take a look, once you're done with them? I might get some medical books myself, my mom got me a gift card that should cover it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing!  We can study together too, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd help a lot, I'm betting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Happy to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyways, Mallory, Kaylee and I were thinking about seeing if our parents wouldn't let us travel - next weekend? That's the last weekend of break - on our own. We could claim to be going to an anime con or something, and while we're there look for other girls to talk to about recruiting. What do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a good idea, but I'd be careful about approaching other girls. If they're unfriendly, they're much more likely to just warn you off rather than outright attack, but a fight isn't out of the realm of possibility. Try to approach them together, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I've run into a girl who didn't give any warning before attacking me. Of course, she was trying to claim my territory, rather than defending her own, but still... Didn't even listen when I explained I was willing to share."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep that in mind," Kaylee says.  "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She backed off when she realized I was more powerful - most girls won't keep fighting past that point, it's usually more measuring each other that seriously fighting - but not everyone will. Can't imagine many girls would try and attack a team, though, unless they're really confident in themselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing we're sticking together, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. Though the team's such a help, I can't imagine anyone being opposed to it just out of hand..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd be surprised. A lot of girls aren't very... teamwork-oriented."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne doesn't look particularly convinced, but also doesn't dispute it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee doesn't either.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck, though! It'll be very nice if we can expand some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!  Yeah, I'm really hoping at least some of them will go for it, it'd be good to cover more ground."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll also be good practice for trying to recruit for your own groups, once you have more experience and freedom of movement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good point.  ...did a lot of girls - need a lot of convincing?  When you were starting off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far I've mostly been relying on Kyubey to direct interested girls my way - haven't been at this for long, so far. Sophie took a bit of convincing, but mostly that logistics would work out. Otherwise, I've been very lucky. I suspect that some girls will be more - leery - of following someone closer to their own age, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's a good point."

Permalink Mark Unread

The conversation drifts off to other topics - mostly people's plans for New Years (Lianne's resigned to getting dragged to a boring party, Alex is going to watch fireworks with her family, Mallory has a non boring party lined up) - then they head out to hunt, a bit earlier than usual.

Permalink Mark Unread

They find, and tidily slay, a sewing-kit witch full of stuffed animal familiars.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne isn't quite sure whether the familiars are creepy or cute. She's leaning towards creepy, though (she decides to sketch a few in her brand new sketchbook).

As usual, Alex takes off in her own car after wishing them luck with their expedition, and Mallory drives Kaylee and Lianne home.

"I'll call you after I've talked to my mom about the trip," Lianne says when it's her stop. "How's that sound?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!" Kaylee says.  "Fingers crossed!  See you soon!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

-

Lianne's conversation with her mom goes well, mostly because she catches her mom at a busy time. Her mom offers to pay for the hotel for them both, as well as Lianne's registration and transportation (Lianne claims she's taking a bus, and that it's in a nearby city), and distractedly tells her to have fun.

Lianne calls Kaylee with the news, then starts preparing for the trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's dad goes for it pretty easily too.  After Lianne calls they manage to get it straightened out between them who's paying for what, and then Kaylee packs.

Soon, it's time to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne meets her at the intercity bus station.

"Hey Kaylee!" she greets, then sends a silent, 'I'm a bit nervous, but it's nice to be finally doing something.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lianne!"  'Yeah, I know what you mean.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'So what's our plan for when we get there? Like, obviously get a hotel and tell our parents we got there safe, but as far as finding other girls goes.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hmm... well, if we hunt in another girl's territory enough we're bound to run into her eventually.  It could take a while, but if we don't have any better ideas... I wonder if there's something conspicuous we could do that could draw a magical girl's attention but that no one else would look twice at.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'No clue. Hunting might work, though, especially if there aren't a lot of witches.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

'So, do you know anything about the city we're heading to?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I've been here a few times, so I can maybe recommend somewhere to eat? Never came here on my own, though, this is just where the airport is so we were driving through. I looked up some decent hotels in the price range my mom gave me, though, so we'll have a choice of where to stay.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'That's something.'

Soon, the inter-city bus pulls up, and they embark.

Permalink Mark Unread

The city's a bit over an hour and a half away by bus, of a reasonable size to host a fictitious con (and probably plenty of witches).

Lianne lists the options she found for hotels; they're mostly similar, though she's favoring the one with the most convenient access to downtown and public transportation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's go with that one."  'Wanna check in now or do some hunting first?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It'd probably be best to have somewhere to put our luggage away,' she points out wryly. "Let's check in then get something to eat; there's supposed to be some good restaurants within a block."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh, good point.'  She blushes a little.  "Yeah, sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes the booking online, then leads the way to the hotel - though admittedly it's more of a large motel - which luckily just requires the credit card rather than a photo ID to check their ages (most places won't rent to a sixteen-year-old, annoyingly enough).

The room's small, and somewhat nice for how cheaply the room came. They each have their own double bed; Lianne claims the one closest to the door, if Kaylee doesn't mind. There's a tiny bathroom, and wifi for an extra charge. No fridge or microwave, but they were planning on eating out anyways.

"So what were you thinking for food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's fine with the window bed.

"Whatever's good around here.  I trust you."  She shoots Lianne a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't exactly been anywhere right around here, but, hmm... Pizza? There's a place that does custom small pizzas, they have a pretty wide variety of ingredients."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

So pizzawards they can go!

(It really is a very nice pizzeria. Lianne gets something complex and slightly bizarre.)

'So hunt after this? Are we thinking just stay in the area at first, take the city bus somewhere else if nothing shows up?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sounds good to me.  Think we'll be able to stay out of sight okay?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, should. It's also almost dark, people will be less likely to notice a couple of girls ducking down an alley. We can also wait to transform until after we're in the barrier, it's not like we've ever been attacked right off the bat.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sounds good to me.'  "This place is really good, by the way.  Thanks for taking me out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you're welcome! Thanks for coming, and for having the idea to come out here - I would've just waited until the summer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, don't mention it."  She sips her soda, smilingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne finishes up her meal over light chatter.

Once they're both done, they can go hunting.

'You want to dowse, or should I?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You can.  You know the city very slightly better than I do.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Only very!'

Lianne discretely baubles her soul gem and starts searching for witches. She's kinda getting a feel for power levels; she'll leave alone any that feel huge. A mid-range witch sounds good for their purposes - likely to draw another girl, unlikely to smear them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's led through alleys and back streets, and eventually a mid-range witch is located.  Potted plants and pruning shears, the witch a a swarm of thick yellow gardening gloves; winning isn't trivial, but it's easy enough.

No other magical girls are in evidence at any time during the fight - nor during their second fight, or third, or fourth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is exhausting," Kaylee says as another barrier vanishes.  "You wanna head back to the hotel soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's go on back." 'At least we'll have plenty of spare grief seeds; we'll have to check with Kyubey how long these last, use up the most dangerous ones first.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

It's quicker going back, naturally.  Once they're up in their room, Kaylee detransforms and flumphs into bed without bothering to change.  "Didn't realize how much more exhausting fighting four witches in one day would be than fighting one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne detransformed as soon as they left the barrier. She ducks into the bathroom to change into nightclothes, then comes out and flops on her own bed.

"Tell me about it. And, ugh, you'd think we'd have run into someone by now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I don't know what's taking so long."  She rolls onto her side to face Lianne's bed.  "I mean, I have no idea how long this sort of thing usually takes, but."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good point. And, who knows, resident magic girl might have decided to take yesterday off. Maybe we'll have more luck tomorrow, it being a weekend and farther from New Years and all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, maybe."  She yawns.  "Think I'm gonna go to sleep now.  G'night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Morning comes.  Kaylee wakes up before Lianne, and tiptoes into the bathroom to change and brush her teeth.  Then she sits back down in her bed, waiting for Lianne to wake up.  (Lianne looks so cute and peaceful when she's asleep.  Awww.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne wakes up fairly promptly, with a sleepy yawn. She's initially a bit confused about the hotel room, then blearily remembers where she is.

"Morning," she mutters, and goes to investigate food options. (There's not much, unless you count granola bars.) "What do you think about getting breakfast out?" she asks as she gets ready for the day. "I can keep an eye out for places on my run."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning!" Kaylee says.  "That sounds good to me.  Want some company on your run?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure! That'd be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

They set out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And running is accomplished, and breakfast is done.

"So," Lianne says over breakfast, "I was thinking that in addition to everything, we should do some sight-seeing. Visit a museum or something. So at the very least we can say we did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be fun!  Do you know of anything good around here?  I like science museums, personally."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm... I think there's a planetarium? Let me look it up." And yup, there's a natural history museum with a planetarium, and a music museum (which includes the science of music), which are about it for stuff on or near public transportation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those look cool!  Especially the planetarium."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna hit the natural history museum first, then? We can do the music museum tomorrow, if we're still feeling like museums."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

To the museum, then!

It almost entirely covers just local natural history, with exhibits on fossils and specimens of Weird Cool Things found nearby. The planetarium has a schedule for shows, rotating through a couple of different ones, most of them only medium length.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee peers at all the fossils and the Weird Cool Things with evident fascination.

"Which of these shows do you want to see?  I'd be up for any of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on how much time we want to spend? The sun one sounds cool, that's right after the stargazing one. We could watch both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm up for both if you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, yeah."

So stargazing it is. It feels nice to be sitting next to Kaylee under the stars in a warm kinda way. The program about the sun is just as cool as Lianne predicted, too.

Afterwards, she's thinking about saying something about lunch, and idly making her regular check for witches, when she feels a vague malevolence. 'Do you feel that?' she sends at Kaylee. 'I think it's at the edge of my range - wait, it's getting closer.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.'  She fiddles with her soul gem's ring, glances around for an exit.  'I think it's in that direction, we should check it out...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, let's.' The museum only has the one non-emergency exit, so she heads for it at a brisk walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

It keeps moving, while they do; wherever it usually lurks, it's moving away.  It isn't long before they find it, a shimmer in the air down a back alley.  She steps forward, brushing her hand through it like a curtain, and vanishes into the barrier.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go," Lianne says, glancing at Kaylee for confirmation before stepping through. She activates her costume once she's inside, drawing her sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

A white hallway, fluorescently lit, with a metal double door at the end.  A hospital.  Shadowy figures in white coats and surgeon's masks wander slowly up and down the hall, vanishing like mirages as they get close.

Kaylee transforms, unsheathing throwing knives from the air.  "You wanna go first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. You got my back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

And onward into the barrier, keeping an eye out for familiars but mostly heading straight for the witch.

Permalink Mark Unread

It becomes clear that it's not just a hospital, but a pediatric ward; the rooms that bloom into deeper hallways are colored in garish pastels and decorated with cartoon animals, eyes a bit too wide, grins a bit too toothy.  Every so often a familiar approaches - wobbly cartoon-mascot caricatures of defibrilators or biohazard symbols.  Some ignore them, some go for the throat; Kaylee easily dispatches any that come up from behind.

After a time, the familiars recede, even as they move deeper into the barrier.  The cartoons on the wall dance and stare, like a fever dream.

"It's been a while since anything came at us, huh?"  Kaylee said.  "Are they usually this bare, this deep in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think we're going the right way?  It felt like it to me, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so... The center feels very strongly like it's this way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what I thought, too.  ...Could someone have been through here already?  Another magical girl?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well," she shrugs, "if someone did, we'll only catch them if we keep moving, and if not we've got a clear path to the witch.  Wanna keep moving?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deeper and deeper.  Hallways twist and branch and double back, and expand into rows and rows of child-sized hospital beds.  Shadowy doctor-figures crowd and cluster.  In the distance, whimpers and screams and less pleasant sounds.

No familiars are in evidence.

Permalink Mark Unread

But soon, someone else is.

As they round a corner, a girl in a steel-grey costume spins to face them.  She has a weapon in each hand, something like an oversized pistol, or perhaps a miniature harpoon; she levels one at Lianne.  From the barrel protrudes something sharp, three prongs curled back like fishing hooks.

"Who the hell are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne sticks her sword in the ground. "Lianne and Kaylee. We're visiting the area, and wanted to see about meeting local girls. Figured hunting's a good way to do that. We're not looking to take your territory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not interested in talking to nomads," she says.  She doesn't lower her grappling hook.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're part of a network of girls not too far from here. Share advice, transportation, some resources, take down particularly big witches together, act as backup for each other in case of an emergency. It's safer, and we're doing better than we would on our own. We were wondering if you'd be interested in joining up, or if you know anyone who is."

Permalink Mark Unread

She clicks her tongue contemptuously.  "You expect me to share my grief seeds?  Tell your club to farm its own witches."

Permalink Mark Unread

Exasperated: "No one's asking you to share grief seeds. But if you're not interested, you're not interested. Do you know anyone in the area who might be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No.  Now get out of my barrier unless you want a fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, alright, we're going. No need to be unfriendly."

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches them go.  It's easy enough to backtrack; soon they're back in the alley.

"Yeesh," Kaylee says.  "I didn't expect it to be that tough a pitch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And something about the way she talked about farming witches just - was wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think she meant - familiars grow into new witches but I thought they had to kill people - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't know. I hope not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should probably keep hunting, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, just far away from her. I don't think she'll react well to a second run-in."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

They manage to find a few more witches, and steer clear of grappling-hook girl.  No other magical girls show up that night.

Permalink Mark Unread

When they return to the hotel room, Lianne collapses into bed with a groan. "Well, that was a long day. At least we'll have plenty of extra grief seeds to share with the group. And we're getting pretty good at hunting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  - you did a really good job handling the girl with the grappling hook, I think she would have attacked us if you weren't so good at - de-escalating."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. That felt more nerve-wracking than most witches! I wonder why she was being so - aggressive, even after we explained ourselves? Like, suspicion I can understand, not the - hair-trigger she was on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah... maybe Kyubey was right, and outside of Mallory's group that kind of meeting just - always-always-always ends in a fight.  Or she - started off alone, and he convinced her, because she didn't have somebody she trusted more than him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. Just, background human personalities, I'd guess there's a lot more girls willing to cooperate than just our group, and Mallory's been around longer and seems pretty optimistic, but - maybe the strong emotions thing selects for girls who're more likely to be volatile?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that could be."  She exhales.  "Well, one down.  She wasn't interested, but we've got more time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. With any luck, next one will go better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's hoping.  ...I can take point with the next one we meet, if you want me to.  Since you said it was scary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not scary, more - felt high-stakes. Like, I really don't want to get into a fight with another girl. But if you want to take point, you can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense.  And, I mean, I certainly wouldn't mind if you did."  She smiles over at Lianne.  "I just wouldn't mind if I did either, if you wanted - a break."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd rather feel - in control of the situation some, so I'll take point. Thanks for the offer, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."  Streeeetch.  "Bedtime, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yawn. "Yeah. Night!" And she hauls herself out of the bed to get ready for sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does Kaylee.  "G'night!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, Lianne gets up bright and early as usual. "Morning!" she greets when Kaylee wakes up. "Want to get breakfast out again, then maybe go to the music museum?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning!  Yeah, that sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then off they can go! Lianne skips her morning run - she'll get plenty of exercise later - and sets off for the same breakfast place, unless Kaylee feels like trying somewhere else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Same place is fine.  Breakfast: acquired!

Permalink Mark Unread

Om nom nom.

Afterwards, Lianne leads the way to the music museum. It's mostly geared towards kids of various ages, but it's still lots of fun for teens. There's plenty of interactive, hands-on exhibits, and a bunch about the history and science of music.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee enjoys herself, it is clear, especially the sciencey exhibits; standing waves are great fun.  As is wandering around looking at cool things with Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne really likes seeing how much Kaylee enjoys the museum, just about as much as she enjoys the exhibits themselves.

Afterwards, she sighs and telepaths, 'So to hunting?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, we should.'

Museum is exited, soul gems are prepared for dowsing.

After a bit of searching, they encounter a string of suspiciously similar playground-witches.

"They don't usually - come in herds, do they?  Do you think this is somebody's - farm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't seen herds before. Maybe, though what kind of asshole would intentionally let witches grow... Maybe this area just doesn't have many girls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Before Kaylee can reply, something shoots downward through the air - bounces off the wall behind them, whizzes between them, and - explodes, throwing them backward into the wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne immediately switches into her costume, jumping to her feet and drawing her sword. She looks around for the attacker, while calling, "Kaylee! You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, just winded - what happened - "

Permalink Mark Unread

A magical girl adorned in gunmetal and forest green alights on the ground in front of them.  She's holding a grenade in each hand.

"Ha!"  She's smirking.  "Incredible trick shot, right?"  She flicks the pins out of her grenades with her thumbs and lobs one toward each of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee dives out of the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne dodges too, then shouts, "What the hell, why are you attacking? If you don't want us here, say so!" She keeps her sword at the ready, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"New at this, huh?" she says.  "You're in my territory."  She calls up a couple more grenades and pitches them both toward Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee powerjumps toward Lianne, aiming to intercept the grenades, and manages to backhand them out of the air.  She lands and skids on the balls of her feet, panting a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, guess what, not like we saw any no trespassing signs! Stop attacking and we'll leave!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you start doing this yesterday?  If you're in someone else's territory you don't negotiate, you fucking run."

She tosses four grenades into the air in a cluster, then pirouettes in place and manages to hit all four with a roundhouse kick as they come back down; they splay out and sail through the air toward Lianne and Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would if you'd stop it with the bombs," Lianne growls, changing her sword's size so she can swat the grenades away, roughly towards the girl. "I'm not running because I can't know if you'll shoot me in the back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She snaps her fingers, and all four grenades explode before they can get close to her.

"That," she says, "is not my problem."  She whips her hand through the air as though she's throwing something, but Lianne can't tell what it is until a moment later, when her chest is peppered with needles - grenade pins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily Lianne heals pretty fast, and the front of her costume is thick enough that the needles barely penetrate. "We're leaving, asshole," she calls, concentrating and summoning a barrier of swords around the enemy girl; golden light arcs between them. They should be proof against an explosion several times the magnitude of what she's seen so far. She then jumps to the roof, thinks better of it, and raises to hover in the air. Proper flying's expensive, but she has a high capacity and more grief seeds than she knows what to do with, and this way she can run backwards. "C'mon, Kaylee, let's get going."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope," she says, "too late."  She conjures another grenade, this one suspended in midair, and it goes off a second later, sending out a flash of green light instead of an ordinary explosion; the arcs of light between Lianne's weapons vanish.  "You had your chance to run.  Now I think I'm going to take you down and take all your grief seeds."

She lobs a couple of black balls their way, which explode into netting halfway through their arc.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee manages to conjure a pair of Bowie knives and shred her netting before it entangles her.

Permalink Mark Unread

The swords themselves are tougher than that, and will at least restrict her movement. Luanne conjures a spiral of ribbon lashing out from each handle, aiming to bind the girl.

Lianne flies back a bit then lands back on the roof - no sense in wasting magic - and increases the number of swords in the barrier, adding thinner swords to fill in the gaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

She manages to evade the bindings just long enough to slip a grenade just outside the barrier, where it explodes and pulverizes the concrete that the swords are embedded in.  She kicks the swords aside, leaps away from the barrier and the ribbons, and ricochets off of the alleyway's wall, soaring up through the air toward Lianne.

Kaylee shifts her Bowie knives into throwing knives and whips them both toward grenade-girl as she's flying toward Lianne; one embeds itself in her side, and she growls and shoots off-course, landing on the roof next to Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who reflexively swipes at her, lightning fast, preparing to keep close of the girl tries to retreat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jerks backward, but still winds up with a gash in her stomach.  She flings a few more pins toward Lianne, these ones aimed at her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who ducks, and, pursuing, shoots a ribbon out of the hand not occupied by her sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jumps into the air to avoid the ribbon and flings two more grenades in Lianne's direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne bats them away, before summoning a wide array of swords to hem her in while she's still mid-air - this time covering the bottom, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl opts to levitate.

Permalink Mark Unread

By this time, Kaylee has alighted on the roof of the opposite building, throwing knives ready if the girl manages to escape somehow.

The girl flicks a grenade pin in Kaylee's direction.  Reflexively she brings her hand up to block, and the pin lodges in her palm.

Already it hurts more than it should.  Kaylee yelps as she yanks it out of her hand, and the pinprick-wound starts to close itself.

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl tosses another grenade toward Lianne, and it explodes into a blinding flash of light and an explosion of sound that leaves her ears ringing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne drops concentration on the sword-cage for a crucial second - next time she's not leaving enough of a gap to so much as breathe through - and blinks, her healing kicking in for her ears. She jumps back and to the side instinctively, in case the grenade girl follows up with an attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

As the swords fall, the girl manages to slip out of their radius, and readies another grenade to throw at Lianne -

Permalink Mark Unread

But the toss is interrupted by a whirling knife from Kaylee's direction - she's in the air, now, and headed toward the other roof.

Grenades-girl lurches back to avoid being tackled, and Kaylee manages to land on her feet, drawing two more knives and whipping them both in Grenades' direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

With all her attention on Kaylee, Grenades ducks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be swatted aside like a fly if she's not careful (Lianne's using the flat of her blade, because she's not murderous levels of angry-afraid quite yet.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is so swatted, but she manages to lean into the hit just so as to turn being swatted away into being swatted upward.  She spins around in midair like a gymnast, flings another volley of pins towards Lianne, and lands on her feet.  Then, for Kaylee, another grenade.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pins and grenade each get blocked by a sword-shield. Lianne retaliates by leaping at her, trying to grab her with her ribbons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grenades dodges the ribbons.  Kaylee manages to throw another knife at the place Grenades is dodging towards; it hits.

"Not as easy as you thought it'd be?" Kaylee asks lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lands, grimacing, favoring the arm with the knife lodged in it.

She tosses off three more flashbangs, which go off in sequence; by the time they can see again, she's distant, fleeing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee lets out a breath, visibly relaxing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs and dismisses the swords still scattered about. "That was. Something. C'mon, let's get out of here before she decides to come back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, lets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't figure we'll have time for much more searching today. Wanna just head back to the hotel room?" She hates admitting defeat, but...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably a good idea."  She hops from the roof back into the alleyway, and detransforms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne follows suit, and heads back to the hotel, where she clears her soul gem before offering the grief seed to Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."  She clears her gem too, and sets the grief seed down on the bedside table.  She heads to the bathroom to change, and then flops down in bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Change. Flop. "Ugh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  God.  How does someone - end up like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know. By being a horrible person. Probably kicks puppies in her spare time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think we just - had really bad luck this weekend, or - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, of the magical girls we've met, three are nice - four if you count Taylor, I don't think people get much nicer than her, and six if you count us - one's probably just paranoid and a loner, and only one's been that bad. Twice is still a coincidence, especially with six counter-examples. And the first girl we met might've been a jerk because she was familiar with the second girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good point.  I guess having someone like that in your neighborhood is a decent reason to be paranoid.  And - you're right, two isn't a lot.  And this was our first time... maybe we can eventually figure out a way to get magical girls to come to us, so it doesn't seem like we're - horning in on their territory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It'd be nicer if Kyubey was more enthusiastic about helping, I feel like he only introduced us to Mallory in case she'd be able to convince you. Maybe we can prove to him that it's a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe.  Hopefully."

She sighs heavily.  "Think I'm gonna try to get some sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhmm. Night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Night."

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning Lianne wakes up with a groan. She greets Kaylee when she wakes up, then says, "We should probably head out after breakfast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  You all packed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got a few things left to pack up, then I'm good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods, rolls out of bed and goes to change.

When she gets back: "...you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Nice long hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs!

Eventually: "...I probably should go get ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"...We'll figure it out.  We can't all be that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight smile. "Yeah. Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."  With mock-sternness: "Now go get dressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes ma'am!" And she gets ready for the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Breakfast is tasty, if subdued.  Kaylee doesn't have much packing to do either, so soon they're on the bus back home.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm kinda dreading telling everyone at club what happened,' she telepaths once they're on the bus. 'Though I don't think Mallory will be too surprised.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh jeez, yeah, that's gonna be tough.  I can't imagine what Taylor's gonna say.'

She puts an arm around Lianne's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. She's just so - optimistic about everything. I really hope she never runs into a magical girl like that last one, she'll have no idea what to do.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.  'I almost - don't want her to wish at all.  I know it's gotta be her call, but.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. She's just - young, in a lot of ways other than just age.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Maybe - maybe one of the things we should do once the League is bigger is some kind of - training period.  If you're more powerful when you wish younger, you can still do that, but you don't have to go out fighting witches right away, you can just practice and spar and live off the grief seed pool.  It's still not - great - to make a decision like that so young, but.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. And then we can try getting to potentials and younger girls, before they get defensive or mean.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Oh, yeah, that's a good idea too - I was imagining after we go public and more people know it's an option.  But if we can convince Kyubey to introduce us to potentials too, that'd help a lot.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I suspect 'all the coolness of being a magical girl but none of the danger until you're ready' will help pull in a lot of edge cases, yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'For some people the coolness might be the danger.  But, yeah, I think you're right.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks. So, get our stories straight for the folks?' She has a few suggestions about what they supposedly did at the 'con', in addition to their trips to the museums. 'Not that my mom will care, but you never know... Wow I'm in a bad mood, I'm usually not this negative.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Fighting that girl was - tough.  Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.'  She rubs her shoulder.

Kaylee helps straighten out their stories.  'Working in the museum visits is a good idea.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks. I think I just need time to get my equilibrium back.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Any time.'

The bus trundles along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon enough they're back to the junction to their usual bus route, then to home. "See you in class!" Lianne says when it's her next stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne returns home, fakes a smile for her family, gives a cursory overview of her trip, then heads upstairs.

The next day, she's feeling better, and she greets Kaylee cheerily when she arrives on the bus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!  How are you feeling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better!" 'That was a setback, but I think we can do better going forwards, now that we have a slightly more realistic picture.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad."  'And yeah, I think you're right.  - we never did get a chance to figure out anything about Kyubey, though.  We might have to take a different tack there.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. Though we'll have to be careful he doesn't get annoyed at us for investigating him then refuse to help.'

Permalink Mark Unread

' - should we be talking about it over telepathy?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Good point. Head to my house after anime club? Or yours. We can talk in one of our rooms.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah, lets.  You can come over to my place, I can't imagine my parents would mind.  I'll text them.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thanks! I'll let my sister know after school.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Cool!'

Kaylee sends off a text to her dad as the bus pulls into the parking lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

The school day proceeds as normal.

After anime club, Lianne calls her sister to let her know she's going over to Kaylee's, then waits with Kaylee for the bus home.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, by the way!  Dad offered to make homemade pizza for everyone, you included," Kaylee says.  "I don't think I ever mentioned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds delicious!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's really good at it, I bet you'll like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhmm!"

After a while, the bus arrives, and they can head to Kaylee's house.

Permalink Mark Unread

With no secret telepathic discussion of spying on Kyubey, it's a pretty regulation bus ride!

They arrive, and Kaylee shows Lianne inside, and yells hello to her dad, who emerges from the kitchen.

"Welcome home, Kaylee.  And you must be Lianne!"  He sticks out a hand to shake.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! You must be Kaylee's dad! Nice to meet you!" She shakes his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh gosh, I never told you my parents' names, did I?"

"You can call me Rob," her dad says.  "Nice to meet you too.  Did Kaylee tell you I'm making pizza?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Homemade pizza sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad," Rob says.  "Help yourself to anything in the fridge, but be sure to save room.  What do you like on your pizza?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just about anything! I don't like onions, but other than that, I can have what other people are having."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Traditionally we do one with pepperoni and one with olives and everybody mixes and matches," Kaylee says.

"I'll let Kaylee show you around," Rob says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds fine to me!" Then, to Kaylee, "So, tour of the house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!"

It's a nice house, roomy, with a cozy living room and a nice dining room and a couple bedrooms upstairs.

She shows Lianne to her room.  It's tidy, especially for a teenager's bedroom.  The walls are painted robin's egg blue, and the ceiling is spangled with those glow-in-the-dark decorative stars.  Her desk is stacked with notebooks.  There's a music stand and a wooden chair in one corner, and a beanbag chair and a blanket next to the small bookshelf in the other.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cozy! What sort of music do you play?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, mostly whatever we have to play for orchestra."  She laughs.  "I'm not sure whether I'm gonna keep it up after high school or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. I don't think I'll take up competitive running after high school, either. What're you playing right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of, like, classical stuff - we're playing part of Mozart's Symphony number 25, that's the one the movie Amadeus opens with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! That must be fun. Do you guys put on a performance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do a couple!  One in February and one at the end of the year.  At my last school we did a Christmas recital but I guess we skipped that this year for some reason, I don't remember exactly why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to come, if you don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know that I've ever been to an orchestra. It'll be fun! And I'll get to see you in action."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "They're nice, if you like classical music."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like the epic kind that gets into movies and video games! Not so much the slow kind though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of it's epic!  At least somewhat epic.  I think for the end-of-year recital we're gonna learn a string-orchestra arrangement of the Star Wars theme, but that's not till May."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.  "I'm looking forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am too!" Stretch. "I'm kinda thirsty, so I'm gonna go get something to drink. You want anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm okay.  Thank you though!"

Permalink Mark Unread

So Lianne goes and supplies herself with something to drink, then heads back to Kaylee for chatting.

"You want to discuss Kyubey now?" she asks when she gets back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We probably should."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, avenues for investigating him... We might be able to ask other magical girls still, especially as the League gets bigger, but the ones joining will probably mostly be young..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plus that could take a while.  I think you mentioned you thought Mallory knew things she wasn't letting on?  We could try to talk to her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, definitely. The other girls might have also noticed something, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.  "We might be able to get something out of him by talking to him, but that's probably - riskier.  ...He knows you don't trust him, because he talked to me about it, so it might be better for me to do that part, if we decide to at all."

"What do we already know?  He's pushing really hard for us not to rely on each other, or on Mallory's group, and he was weirdly reluctant to help scout for witches..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wasn't super forthcoming with me about dying if we run out of magic, that's a big one I think. Also he never told us that we're always using some magic. It's probably negligence and just his personality, but it's - a glaring example of how his viewpoint's different than ours, if so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did he ever tell you that you should always keep your soul gem on your person?  He told me that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No, I don't think so. Did he say why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't think to ask.  It was right after I wished, I was kinda - distracted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Maybe he'll be willing to tell you if you ask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He might.  I can try him now...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I don't see why not..."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hey, Kyubey?'

She waits a few moments.

"He's not answering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Is that normal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't tried to get in touch with him that many times but I don't remember him ever not answering..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could he be busy? Or maybe out of range?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be.  I don't know if this telepathy has a range limit, do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Haven't really been testing it. We probably should though, in case there's an emergency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, good call."

"So... we know Kyubey's been acting kind of sketchy, and we know Mal possibly also suspects something.  But - he does seem to want to help us against witches.  He came along with us on that hunt, and it didn't seem like he steered us wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I think that's what's bothering me the most, he's just - extremely inconsistent."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - do you think he just - actually is really really bad at his job?  Didn't he say he was only a few years old?  Maybe we're just - his first magical girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be it. We can ask Mal and the others what the ones who contracted them are like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.  "The more I think about it... maybe he keeps pushing the 'teamwork doesn't work' line because he's - not confident enough to go off-script?  But that just kinda passes the buck..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know. I still don't really trust him, even if the reason's just incompetence..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fair.  But it probably has - implications for how we deal with it."

A voice from downstairs:  "Kaylee!  Lianne!  Dinner!"

Kaylee stands up.  "We should head down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, lets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Coming!"

Down to dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne enjoys the pizza, and makes sure to say so.

Afterwards, she turns to Kaylee and says, "This's been really fun! We should do it again sometime. Unfortunately I think I should be getting home, though. See you tomorrow?" 'And we can test the telepathy range at least some once I'm back home.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to do this again, I had a lot of fun too.  See you tomorrow!"  'Good idea.'

Permalink Mark Unread

So Lianne solicits a ride home, lets her mom know she's back, then heads up to her room.

'Testing, testing, one two three,' she sends, for lack of any better ideas.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hi Lianne,' Kaylee says.  'It reaches at least this far.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. How're you doing?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Pretty well,' she says.  'How about you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Missing you already. It's boring here, and now I have to do homework. Ugh.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Awww!  I miss you too.  And yeah, homework sucks.  We'll see each other tomorrow though.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

And indeed they do.  Days pass; they hunt together on Friday, and it's as exhilarating as ever.  Saturday comes, and it's time for another meeting of the League of Magical Girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd meeting with the other magical girls go?" Alex asks when they get there. It's just her, Sophie, and Mal so far; Taylor's running late.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very well," Kaylee says.  "We only found two, and they were both - unfriendly.  We got into a fight with one of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, that sucks. You two okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am.  Thanks."  She glances at Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Wasn't very pleasant, but we won without too many injuries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to hear you're both alright. It's good you were able to get out of the fight, though of course bad to have gotten into one. What happened, do you mind me asking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We showed up in what turned out to be her territory, hunting witches and looking for other magical girls, and she just - attacked.  And told us we should be running, and then decided to - "take us down," I don't know if she wanted to kill us or what - and steal all the grief seeds we had on us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry that happened to you. Girls like that aren't too common, but they exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  The other one - wasn't as bad, but I think that could've turned into a fight too if Lianne wasn't as good as de-escalating."  She smiles at Lianne.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. I was kinda panicked the whole time, but I think she was mostly just being paranoid about us. Makes sense, living next to that other girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess we'll try a different city next time.  How are things on the home front?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things have been fairly boring around here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Taylor arrives, then, running and out of breath. "Sorry I'm late guys!" Then, after greeting everyone, "Guess what! I wished, I'm a magical girl now!"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - you are?"  She doesn't sound like this is wholly good news.  (Suddenly she remembers telling Lianne the same thing, and the look on Lianne's face.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Kyubey said you have higher potential when you're younger, and I was reading about this horrible disease and got really sad about it, so I used your idea and wished someone would discover a formula for a vaccine that's super cheap and stores easily! The wish went through, but Kyubey says that's only because I have a lot of potential."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory is silent for a few moments, then, "Well, you can train with us, but I'd rather you not be going on hunts until you're older. Sixteen, maybe. I can give you grief seeds until then, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mom won't let me stay out that late yet anyways..."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I think that was a really good use of your wish, though, personally," Kaylee says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since Kaylee and Lianne are planning on doing more scouting for other girls to join, do we want to practice fighting other girls more, since it is a risk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, there's a small handful of unfriendly types in my area."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds good to me.  One on one, or split up into teams?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both would probably be good for practice. You all can also try teaming up against me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, good point - if we're the only big magical girl alliance around and we scout in groups, we're probably gonna run up against more powerful solo girls more often than anything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And unfortunately unethical girls tend to accumulate a lot of personal power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than - ethical ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Farming familiars is a good way of getting a lot of grief seeds quickly, and the increased density of powerful witches allows more practice, is the main thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the girls we met talked about farming, I wasn't sure if it meant - the obvious thing, or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does. Intentionally allowing familiars to escape and live and to eat people, so they grow into larger witches."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and sighs.  "That's.  Another problem, then.  For us to work on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We need to find some way of arresting girls like that," Lianne mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once - if - we eventually go public, I'm sure laws will be passed, but in the meantime - could an ordinary prison even hold us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not if we were highly determined to escape, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't suppose - " she begins, and hesitates.  "I have a vague ethical-injunction sorta sense that it would probably end up being a bad idea to just - try to - run our own private magical girl prison.  Even if we had the resources."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs, heavily.  "Maybe - at least some of them could be persuaded to stop, if they had an alternative option like the League.  But."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think our best bet's going to be making it an unattractive option. Most of them are selfish, not outright evil."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just breaking up the farms wherever we find them could do that," Kaylee says.  She leans back.  "We - probably can't do much on that front yet, though.  There's still only six of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, unfortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway.  We mentioned practicing more girl versus girl.  We should probably get to that soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Everyone good to head out?" The others nod; Taylor says she can join them, since it's so early, which Mallory reluctantly agrees to. (She'll need practice in case she runs into a hostile nomad, after all.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And they head out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off to practice.

Mallory tells them to sort themselves into pairs to practice fighting each other. She'll pair with Taylor initially, to get her caught up on training.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee will pair with Lianne again, if she's up for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is as enthusiastic about sparring as ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne makes a special point of practicing her barriers and bindings, trying to improve her speed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll likely ensnare Kaylee a couple of times, then!

Kaylee mostly practices dodging attacks and doing things with ribbons - she still hasn't come up with a barrier technique she likes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne also needs to practice dodging or countering the ribbons, so that works out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much fun is had.

Eventually it's time for them to reorganize, in order to practice fighting in groups against a single, stronger enemy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mal acts as the stronger enemy.

She's not all that powerful, but she's good, and hard to beat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, this is fun.  Other magical girls are less predictable than witches and familiars, she's gotta think more on the fly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mallory has a lot of tricks up her sleeve, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's blindsided by a few of them!  But she keeps up with the others okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a while Mal calls a halt to the fight. "I'm running low on energy. Good job, girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," says Kaylee.  Grief seeds are passed around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Over time you'll develop a sense for how much raw power your opponent has. Someone like me will be aiming to end a fight as soon as possible, using very little energy - best strategy would be trying to tire me out. Someone like Taylor has capacity to spare for large attacks. Depending on the person, this might make a war of attrition easier or harder - if she uses a lot of high powered attacks she might drop faster than me, but if she conserves her magic she'll be able to outlast you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.  "And if we're being outlasted, that's when to focus on stuff like bindings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, generally."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a few more pointers about specific tactics she's seen and how to combat them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That reminds me - I've been thinking of ways to get magical girls' attention without hunting in their territory, since that seems to make them angry.  You can make all kinds of different guns - do you think you could make a flare gun that only magical girls can see?  Since a lot of magical things are invisible to non-magical-girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good idea. It's theoretically possible. You might still get some hostilities that way, but they'll be reduced, and you'll be able to pick the grounds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks.  I'm not sure how well it'd translate to other weapons, though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could maybe do something with ribbons? You'd have to rely on the other girls being in a position to see it though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something big and flashy on top of a skyscraper, maybe?  And then wait around a while.  I don't actually know if the ribbons are invisible to non-magic people, though.  - We need a better word for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For non-magical people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno." She looks at the other girls, who mostly shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex looks thoughtful. "Hm... Mundanes. Muggles. Nulls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mundanes could work.  Magic versus mundane, that's a thing.  Or we could just shorten non-magical-girls to - nonmages or something?  ...Or unwished, it sounds a bit fantasy-novel but it makes sense..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why don't we have a vote? Between mundanes and unwished."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne puts her vote in for unwished, Taylor for mundanes ("That way we can also distinguish potentials," she argues), Alex for unwished, Sophie for mundanes, and Mallory abstains.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee votes for her own idea, a little sheepishly.  "Although Taylor makes a good point.  We could call them unwishers instead, or use them interchangeably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unwishers sounds kinda awkward in a way unwished doesn't? Maybe just restrict how we use unwished, it won't be the first time a word's had a meaning that doesn't match the etymology."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you're right... nonwishers sounds a bit better to me, maybe?  If we wanna be really specific."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, I don't think it matters that much. Unwished is more. Smooth or something," Alex says. "I don't think specificity matters all that much, context should make who you're talking about clear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's true.  Unwished it is!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, what're we thinking next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to head out soon-ish, so if y'all are done, I can go on home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we've had a pretty good training session for today, what about you guys?"

Permalink Mark Unread

There's general agreement with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you all want to hunt once Taylor's been picked up, or call it done for the night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm up for a hunt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, see you guys!" Taylor says, and calls her mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne and the others agree that they're up for a hunt, so once they've straightened up and seen Taylor off, they load up into Mallory's car to go dowsing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon enough a witch presents itself: a brightly-lit caricature of a medieval castle built out of enormous children's blocks lettered and numbered in bright colors.  Jack-in-the-boxes (jacks-in-the-box perhaps) crawl through the corridors, dragging their boxes behind them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"These things keep getting creepier and creepier..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the basement one is still spookiest, personally..." Kaylee glances over at her.  " - you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Come on, let's beat this thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the spirit!"

Jack-in-the-box familiars go down as easy as ever, but there's enough of them that Kaylee's happy to have backup, from time to time.

Corridors and secret passageways wind around each other in geometrically-impossible tangles, connecting armories full of giant clown dolls and banquet halls complete with plastic feasts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd really like to find out one of these days what influences witches into their shapes," she mutters after another bizarre find.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - hmm, yeah.  It's one thing for different girls to get different weapons and magical girl outfits, that could at least be drawing on something about us..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe they feed on the nightmares of the people they eat..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't each one look like a bunch of different things, then, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. It is weird that it's all stuff recognizable to us, though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  It's all been - artificial stuff.  It's gotta be drawing from - human minds or human-made things, somehow, it wouldn't come up with all this stuff by coincidence, would it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I don't think it would..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe it has something to do with the first person they eat... Mal, do you know if familiars that grow into witches look like the witches they came from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do. It's not too common to see them grouped, though, because naturally they'll disperse, or eat each other..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...do witches ever come from anywhere other than growing out of familiars?  Like - show up in spooky places on their own, out of nowhere?  Kyubey said they were 'born from curses' or something but he was really vague about what that means..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To my knowledge, some do naturally occur."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could have something to do with it."

Something seems a bit weird about the way Mallory's talking about this, but she can't quite put her finger on what.  - maybe she's imagining it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So on with the hunt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yes."

Onward.  As they move deeper into the barrier, the halls become bigger and grander, still made out of children's blocks all the while.

The witch is an enormous doll with a scepter and a crown and a mouth full of human teeth and gums that glisten wetly.

" - that's pretty creepy," Kaylee says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." She tightens her grip on her sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

The witch's jaw opens and closes with a sound a bit like a bear trap, but it makes no other sound as it lumbers forward.

Its attacks are heavy and graceless, great slow swings of its scepter or its wooden fists, trying to catch multiple foes in one swing.  Kaylee is in her element; she can dance deftly out of the way of its attacks and strike back with precision at its mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the team's doing well, too. Lianne's been working on her speed, to great effect.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't put up much of a fight.

Kaylee alights on the ground and picks up the grief seed as the barrier shimmers out of existence.  "Anyone need...?"  She gestures indicatively with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm getting low."

The others all shake their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tosses the seed to Sophie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who taps her soul gem to it.

"Are we done for the night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm pretty tired."  She looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others all agree with this assessment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess we're heading home, then.  Mal, can I get a ride with you again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

So she climbs into Mal's car, and - homeward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne also gets a ride home with Mal.

"See you on Monday?" she says to Kaylee when they split up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep, see you then!  Bye!"  She gives a little wave as she gets out of the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next Saturday, Lianne's partnered with Alex for their training. It's interesting, since Alex is extremely heavy on ranged attacks, and Lianne's heavy on up-close-and-personal with her sword. She ends up getting a lot of practice dodging or blocking trick arrows.

Permalink Mark Unread

During a lull in the fight, Alex (who's been chattering on and off) says, "So, you and Kaylee, are you two, y'know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Know what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you two dating."

Permalink Mark Unread

That brings her up short, and she nearly fails to block Alex's follow up attack. "...That honestly never occurred to me. I don't think we are..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Looked to me like you guys were."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Do you think she likes me like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am almost one hundred percent positive she likes you like that. You're a bit harder to get a read on, since you're so friendly with everyone, but my read was you do, too. Have you guys seriously never talked about this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm selectively oblivious, okay! Wow, I'm going to really have to think over that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two'd be cute together. I can approach her if you want to double check?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I think I'm good. Thanks for the offer - and the clue-by-four over the head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime."

And back to training.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Kaylee is sparring with Taylor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who is not very skilled but very, very enthusiastic. And who has a ridiculously high capacity, and isn't particularly careful about conserving energy.

"This is fun, but I can't wait to be able to actually help against the witches," she says during a lull in the sparring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sparring is helping," Kaylee says.  "It's nice to get in some practice without having to fear for my life.  - but I know what you mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was fighting that other magical girl like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scary.  Really scary.  ...But also - kind of exciting.  The adrenalin rush is really..."

She trails off, making a vague gesture.  Now that she says it out loud it sounds like kind of an ominous sentiment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think having to fight another girl would be the worst thing ever... People should get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee smiles kind of sadly.  "Hopefully we'll be able to - fix it.  Or at least make it happen less often."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I'm sure we will. That's the whole point of this team, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys are really awesome. I'm glad I found this group, I'd have been - lost - without it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thanks.  ...Was Kyubey - hounding you, before you found out about us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like - really pressuring you to become a magical girl?  I figured that was what you meant by being lost without the group."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really? I knew I wanted to be a magical girl, but I could never decide what to wish on - he did encourage me to stop overthinking things and go ahead and wish, but he was very friendly about it, and I really was being way too wishy-washy..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, it's a pretty big decision.  I don't think there's any shame in wanting to mull it over."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like what I settled on, though!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee shrugs.  "I'm not saying it was a bad call, sorry if that came out wrong.  I think you used your wish really well.  I just - I don't know if that means you were being too wishy washy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, I have trouble deciding stuff in general, it's a problem with me... But thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem!  - oh, we should probably get back to sparring, huh."  She laughs sheepishly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah! Wow, I got totally distracted..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I do that a lot."  She traces a ribbon into existence through the air.  "Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a staff. "Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Training continues; Kaylee's getting pretty good at using her ribbons to make thrown nets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taylor's mostly focusing on making ribbons at all, without taking forever at it. She gets caught by the nets a few times, and always starts laughing when she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee giggles along.

Eventually, sparring is over, and it's time to hunt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taylor heads home before the hunt, and then everyone else sets out.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a quiet evening: they run across a stray familiar lurking around a back alley, but no witches, or none active enough to draw attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wonder if we're actually clearing them out some?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have been hunting them pretty regularly. It'd be nice if we are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think, Mal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A single night without anything isn't too unusual, but we have been taking down more large witches than I used to alone, so it's possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee smiles warmly.

" - oh, it's getting late," she says.  "Should we head back soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works for me."

The other girls all nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

No more escaped familiars are in evidence as they head back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone splits off as usual, and Lianne wishes Kaylee a good night when Mal arrives at her house. She seems a bit off, like she's fighting with herself over saying something, but keeps quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee is only halfway sure she actually notices anything.  "Good night!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That night, Kyubey comes to visit her again.  She lets him in.  He curls up on her bed, and she sits next to him.  She doesn't reach to pet him.

"Hi, Kyubey," she says.  "I haven't seen you in a while.  Is everything okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everything's fine," he says.  "How are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm doing pretty good," she says cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

He cocks his head to one side, for all the world like a curious puppy.  "Are you sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts on a smile.  "Yeah.  Witch hunting is hard, you know, but I'm holding up okay.  - actually, there's something I wanted to ask you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I made the contract with you you mentioned that I should always keep my soul gem on my person," she says.  "What happens if I dont?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can inhibit your ability to use your magic," Kyubey says.  "You might pass out too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee nods.

She hesitates - but if Kyubey really is just not very good at this -

"...that's another one of the things you should probably tell people right away."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at the floor.  "I guess I'm still not very good at this," he says sadly.  Then he looks up at her, almost tremulously.  "I didn't scare you, did I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

If Kyubey is actually - a bad guy, or something - she doesn't want to appear mistrustful - but I was worried isn't exactly I don't trust you -

(He looks so scared.  Is he faking it?)

"I was a little worried," Kaylee says.  "...If people don't know why something is dangerous, it can make them anxious about it.  And if they don't know how dangerous it is, they don't know how to weigh that danger against other dangers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Humans are so complicated," says Kyubey, sounding sorrowful.  "I didn't mean to worry you.  Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm fine now that I know," Kaylee says.  "I guess - if you know something is dangerous, tell us as much as you can about why it's dangerous, even if we don't think to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey nods.  "Thank you, Kaylee.  ...I do want to protect you from Witches, you know.  I don't always understand everything about humans, but - I want you to feel like you can trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates minutely -

Permalink Mark Unread

"...has somebody been telling you not to trust me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - no," Kaylee says.  "Nothing like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," Kyubey says.  "I was worried..."

He trails off.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she did trust him, she'd probably ask...

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well - it's possible that - if Lianne were planning to eventually betray you - she'd want to turn you against me.  So you'd be less likely to turn to me for help when she did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Planning to betray me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told you magical girls don't often work well together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't - Lianne wouldn't do that," Kaylee says firmly.  "We're friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were friends," Kyubey says.  "Becoming a magical girl can change a person, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's mind suddenly flashes back to the fight on the roof, and the way it felt to be fighting another magical girl, the exhilaration...

She shakes her head.  "I trust Lianne."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you do," Kyubey says.  "Just... be careful, okay, Kaylee?  I do want to keep you safe, like I said."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you do," she lies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyubey looks at her sadly.

"I'd better go," Kyubey says.  "I'll see you soon, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hops out her window and disappears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee sits, and thinks.

She thinks about Lianne saving her life, and she thinks about Kyubey helping her do it, and she thinks about how scared and sad Kyubey always seems whenever he realizes he's said something to make them scared of him (is he that good an actor?) and she thinks about just how much she's been enjoying fighting witches and even the battle on the roof with the other magical girl - but Lianne didn't enjoy it, or it didn't seem like she did, if becoming a magical girl changed anyone it changed Kaylee, not Lianne...

She thinks and she thinks and she thinks and she knows, by now, that this means she isn't going to get anywhere without talking it over.

She - doesn't think she should tell Lianne about this over telepathy.  All things considered.

(She wishes she could talk to her dad.  But he doesn't know, and Kyubey told her to keep it a secret, and now she's wondering if even that's some kind of trick, and and and and and.  Circles again.)

She sleeps, fitfully, and passes Sunday cloistered away in her room, trying to get started reading her anatomy textbooks but not getting very far.

And then Monday arrives, and shortly thereafter the school bus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Kaylee - you alright?" Lianne asks softly when she sees her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got a visit from Kyubey yesterday," she says, under her breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." She glances around the bus. It's noisy, and people probably aren't listening... "Did everything - go okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He thinks - or he says he thinks - he tried to convince me that you're trying to turn me against him," Kaylee says.  "I don't know if - he actually believes it, or if he's trying to get me not to trust you, or... or what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd never betray you, Kaylee. I - don't know why he's doing that. He's so strange, I can't really model him at all..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you wouldn't," Kaylee says.  She smiles at her, for a moment.  "I just..."

She massages her forehead.  "I don't know how to tell whether he's being sincere when he's talking to me.  If he's not he's a really good actor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I - can see how girls would be pulled into his lies, and stop trusting everyone other than him... It's strange, though, that he doesn't seem to be trying as hard with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

“ - Yeah, that is weird.  You think that’s what he’s trying?  To be the only person that magical girls trust... Maybe we just got stuck with the really sketchy one.  I don’t know why he wouldn’t be going after you, though.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe because I haven't trusted him from the start, and quite frankly at this point I don't think there's anything he can do to change that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“That could be, yeah.  Maybe we should try to find another one and see if he’s less... like that.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Maybe the one Mal works with? She seems to trust hers well enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

“That’s a good idea.”

The bus arrives.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talk to you later? I have - something to talk to you about, too, nothing major though."

Permalink Mark Unread

“ - Sure.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Class! Lianne's quiet all day, worrying - both over Kaylee's talk with Kyubey, and over what she plans to say to her friend.

When gym rolls around, she falls into step beside Kaylee, and says, "So... Um. I'm not sure how to say this..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's mind has been churning all day and somehow this sends it into overdrive.  She has a sudden horrible premonition that Lianne is about to confront her about how much she loves to fight witches, that she somehow guessed Kaylee's wish and how unwise it was...

" - what is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - really like you. Like, a lot. You're just - such a good person, and I love spending time around you, even when times are tough. I'd - do you want to go on a date with me? Like, a proper date, not a friendship outing - though I'm fine just being friends if that's what you want! Um, I'm messing this up aren't I..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh!  I - "

This is pretty clearly not what she had been expecting.

"I don't know - I guess I never really thought about - that?  With, us?  I'm not even - I don't know if I - like?  Girls?  But, I mean, I don't - know that I don't... and, I mean, I really like you too!  You're really nice and you're smart and you have such a drive to help people and protect people and - you saved my life, and - you're really pretty too - "

She blushes bright red and looks at the floor.

"I think - if I were gonna go out with a girl - I'd want it to be you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy smile. "We can try and see how things go, maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah.  Let's - Friday?  I mean - " she blushes and laughs.  "Does going out to dinner on Friday work for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! It works great for me! Um. So. Like, dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - I know a good Italian place, or, if you have suggestions...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Italian's good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great!  I can probably meet you at your house around five, and then we can take the bus into town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I'll let my mom know the plan, then confirm tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good!"  They walk on.  "...what do people do after they've asked each other out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea! I've never done this before."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.  "Me either.  I guess on TV the conversation always kinda ends here."

She hesitates a moment, reaches out to take Lianne's hand, hesitates again, and then sort of brushes against her fingers questioningly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hand-holding! And blushing!

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy blushing and hand-holding!  And a new spring in Kaylee's step.

Permalink Mark Unread

Skipping would be Weird but she totally feels like skipping.

(They're getting slightly odd looks from a boy in their class.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee ignores him, or possibly just doesn't notice.  (She's holding Lianne's hand and they're gonna go out on a date on Friday!  And Lianne keeps grinning and it is Extremely Cute!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne would maintain that Kaylee's the cutest!

She's on cloud nine enough to carry her through the rest of gym class.

Permalink Mark Unread

But alas, eventually they must go their separate ways.

"See you tomorrow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

And she heads home. She gets permission from her mom - she does not mention it's a date, just implies it's a friendship thing - then goes to bed, still grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's parents are on board as well.  She can't stop grinning all evening.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets Kaylee know that her mom approved, then spends the rest of the week with a bounce in her step. She rather shyly holds Kaylee's hands during gym class; their classmates have yet to say anything, though one or two have been whispering.

Friday, she asks, "So, how're we doing this? Take the bus to your house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, that works for me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great!"

And the end of school rolls around. Lianne texts her sister that she's taking the bus to Kaylee's, then gets off at her stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So - you wanna just hang out here until our date?"

A little involuntary grin flickers across her face when she says the words "our date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me. ...Do your parents know that we're going on a date? Like, can I talk about it in front of them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's fine.  - did you have to keep it secret from your parents?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"From my mom and sister, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Jeez, that’s gotta be tough.”  She squeezes her hand.  “...Is it - because I’m a girl, or - ?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"That - it's hardly respectable - " she spits - "And she's, just, in general picky about who I date? And doesn't think I should be dating at all, really, especially with my grades..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"God, that sounds awful, I can't even imagine... do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"Sorry I can't do - more than this," she says.  "If you ever want to - hang out here, get your mom off your back, let me know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. And she isn't on my back much at all - I just know how she'd react."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."  She gestures toward the house.  "Shall we go inside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight smile. "Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inside.

"Hi Dad!" Kaylee calls as they enter.

He emerges from the upstairs a moment later.  "Hey kiddo.  And Lianne!  Nice to see you again."  Wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to see you too! Thanks for having me over."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any time!  I know you're saving room for your dinner date, but feel free to help yourselves to anything in the fridge."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne blushes at 'dinner date', but just says, "Thanks!" and goes to get herself a soda.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll leave you two alone," he says, grinning, and retreats upstairs.

Kaylee sits down on the couch and motions for Lianne to join her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

She sits next to Kaylee, grinning despite her embarrassment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.  Kaylee puts an arm around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee!

She reciprocates, leaning into Kaylee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean.  Happy sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such happy!

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeee.  Kaylee will happily just cuddle on the couch for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has zero objection to cuddling until it's time to leave!

Permalink Mark Unread

" - oh, wow, we need to get going soon," Kaylee says after a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, yeah. Time sure flies, huh..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."  She reluctantly disentangles herself and gets up - then, on impulse, extends her hand to Lianne in as princely a manner as she can muster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. Lianne takes her hand, gets up, and sketches a curtsy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee grins broadly and kisses the back of her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My good sir - or is it madam?" she asks between giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Madam, please," she grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My good madam! Our carriage awaits!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We must away," she says solemnly.  "With me, darling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the ball! But I must be back before the clock strikes midnight!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee dissolves into giggles as she leads Lianne out the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's giggling pretty intensely, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.  Kaylee leads her to the nearest bus stop.  "It's a pretty short ride," she says, "just a few stops."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright! Lead the way." She gladly holds Kaylee's hand on the walk there, and sits pressed next to her on the ride.

Permalink Mark Unread

As promised, the ride is pretty short.  Once they're off the bus, Kaylee leads her to a quiet and atmospheric Italian restaurant.

"Do you like tables or booths?" she asks while they're waiting to be seated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... How about a booth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me!"

A waiter approaches soon after, and seats them at a booth with a little decorative candle in the middle of the table.

"I love this place," she says.  "My parents and I come here sometimes, on special occasions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm liking it so far! I'll definitely have to keep it in mind, I love the atmosphere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad!"  She examines her menu.  "Do you want to get appetizers?  They have really good bruschetta."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooo, sounds yummy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is!  Their pizza's really good too, if you want to split one, or they've got a lot of different pasta dishes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... I'll have to give that some thought... I think I'm in the mood for something a bit fancy, so maybe a pasta dish?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wanna split it or each get our own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. How big are their meals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I usually finish a plate of pasta on my own, but they'll let you order a double-sized one if you want to share."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's share one, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!"

When the waiter comes around, Kaylee orders them a plate of bruschetta and a double portion of a nice fancy pasta dish, plus a soda for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne just goes with iced tea.

"This is really good!" she says of the bruschetta. "Much better than anything I've tried to make."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, do you cook?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some! Mostly easy stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to try something of yours sometime.  I bet it's delicious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks! I can cook next time you come over."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that!  If you don't mind, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all! I love cooking for people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make something special, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Their main course arrives shortly thereafter, an enormous helping of spaghetti and tomato sauce with a decorative sprig of basil and a little side of parmesan cheese next to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Om nom nom!

"This is good! Thank you for recommending this place!" Lianne says between bites.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom!

"You're welcome!  I'm glad you like it so much.  And thank you for coming out to dinner with me!"  Grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee!

(Lianne is so glad Alex talked her into this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon there's no dinner left to nom.

Kaylee leans back in her chair and dabs at her mouth with her napkin.  "That was good," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" Smile. "I really enjoyed this, Kaylee. Thank you for agreeing to go out with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a really good time too," Kaylee says.  "Thanks for asking me out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, do this again sometime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suppose it's time to head back. Think your dad will give me a ride to my place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think he'd mind," Kaylee says.  "Want me to come with, when he does?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you'd like to, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's smile!!!  Is so cute!!!

"I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's is cuter!

"Then let's head out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Kaylee leaves the money and a tip, and takes Lianne's hand as they head out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee! Lianne miiiggghhht be smiling a bit goofily in Kaylee's direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww!

"You're adorable," Kaylee says.  Or mumbles might be a better word.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Thanks. You're just - amazing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, thank you!" Kaylee says, blushing.  "...I kinda want to hug you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!  Nice cuddly hug outside the restaurant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee!

Lianne is very reluctant about disentangling herself when the time comes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee smiles at the ground as they pull apart.  "I like how much you like hugging me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very huggable!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and blushes.  "I do my best!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And cute and lovely and kind and empathetic and just a wonderful person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."  Blush.  "You're pretty spectacular too, you know.  Brave, and determined to help people, and - pretty - " she still can't talk about how pretty Lianne is without turning bright red.  "And cuddly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks. I try to be brave and all, it matters a lot to me that you think I am..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are!  You - " she glances around to see if anyone's listening in, then murmurs, "you stormed into the basement witch to save me, before we even had - any magic, or anything.  I'm - just constantly really impressed by how brave you are, Lianne."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh. Thanks. Just - didn't feel like I had a choice at the time. Never really does, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee squeezes her hand and smiles.  "See, that's the sort of thing I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're pretty brave, too, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only now that I've got - " she waggles the finger with her soul gem ring on it.  "...but thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bravery's about a lot more than that, but - you're welcome."

So, bus?

Permalink Mark Unread

Bus!  Kaylee puts an arm around Lianne as they ride home.

Once they get to Kaylee's house (because in a minute they're gonna get her dad to drive Lianne home and it'd be weird in her dad's car and she can't do it outside Lianne's house because it's a secret from her parents and she's not gonna get another chance tonight dammit) she says, "Um.  Lianne?"

She's smiling shyly at the ground and blushing furiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd like to kiss you.  If.  That would be okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" Blush. "I mean - I'd really like that, Kaylee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never, um.  Kissed anyone before.  In, like, an end-of-a-date way.  So.  I don't totally.  Know what I'm doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough!"

She takes a deep breath, and takes a step toward Lianne, and... kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! Lianne is enthusiastic but very clearly has Zero idea what she's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's in pretty much the same boat!  She hopes grinning doesn't ruin a kiss or anything because she's grinning like a maniac!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lianne's nose bumps into Kaylee's, and she starts giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.  "Oops," she says between giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clearly," giggle, "We need to practice more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm up for that!"

Kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Kiss!!!

Eventually they break apart, though.  "We probably can't do this all night, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do probably need to sleep at some point," she says. "...And I should get home. Sometime-ish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee gives a heavy, exaggerated sigh.  "Yes, probably.  We can go ask my dad for a ride now if you want."  She gestures toward the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Eh, I'd rather stick around, but sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee laughs, and takes Lianne's hand as they head inside.  It turns out Kaylee's parents are just finishing up dinner.

"Hi Dad!  Hi Mom!  I don't think you've ever met my mom," Kaylee adds to Lianne.  "Mom, this is Lianne."

"Nice to meet you," Kaylee's mother says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're just finishing up here," Kaylee's dad says.  "I'll be able to give you a ride home in a minute, if you want."

"So you're my daughter's dinner date, huh?" her mom says, grinning.  "Stick around, Kaylee's gonna be rich one day."

Kaylee rolls her eyes affectionately.

Permalink Mark Unread

To Kaylee's dad: "Okay!" And to her mom: "Oh, um, alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kaylee's mom chuckles heartily.  "Don't worry, I don't bite.  My name's Helena, by the way, I'm happy to be on a first-name basis with all my daughter's friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Hi Helena, I'm Lianne!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Helena laughs.  "Hello, Lianne."

"Shall we get going," Kaylee's dad asks, "or did you want to stick around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As much as I'd love to stick around, my mom's kinda expecting me back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, I can give you a ride back now."

"See you in a bit, Mom," Kaylee says, and then: to the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

To the car, and then home.

Lianne keeps up a light chatter about school during the ride, then wishes Kaylee a goodnight when they arrive at her house.

"I had a ton of fun. Do this again sometime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that.  See you tomorrow at the scouting club?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye!"  She waves, and resists the temptation to blow a kiss as Lianne walks away from the car, in case her mother sees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye!"

And she heads inside.
