When Journey opens the door again three seconds later, he's in a different suit and his hair isn't quite parted how it was. "Hello again! Your planetoid's ready."
"I'm not sure how you might go about learning it now, unfortunately. Did you mean it, when you said please and thank you? That might help."
"............Zane-la said it was a 'speech act' for politeness, which means that if I say it, I am being polite. He taught me about lies but I don't think a speech act can be a lie because you do the politeness when you say it."
"'Thank you' is not a statement, so I guess it can't be a lie, but you can still mean it or not."
"People do say thank you without meaning it, it just might be a shortcut to sounding polite if you were saying it sincerely."
She puzzles about this for a moment.
"But then I might not get what I want."
"I don't know how exactly things are set up around here. But in normal situations people will choose not to give you things specifically because you demand them instead of asking nicely, if you do. Even though asking nicely also doesn't always work."
"It has to be, or I wouldn't have said it. I didn't have a language before this."
"I didn't say it made me smarter. It means I don't use words wrong."
