"The best-case scenario isn't bad but we got lucky." 

"Okay but what's the mainline scenario there."

"Uncontrolled awakening, something unpleasant happens to you--how unpleasant varies--and you awaken all at once as your soul throws resources into fixing the problem; you have more than zero ability to steer what happens but it really isn't a lot, it goes by too fast to make detailed choices. Controlled awakening under unfavorable circumstances, you can make your choices at every available level of detail but the person doing your awakening might deliberately deceive you about what your options are or straight-up coerce you into making the choices they want."

"Okay, so it's like - suboptimal species or specialty or whatever selection? Which can still be very bad but doesn't like kill you or whatever."

"Right. The thing that's most likely to kill you, if you're an unawakened witch on the wrong side of the veil with no idea that magic exists, is not awakening at all and dying of old age."

"Well, I'd still like to find a me but I guess it's not as urgent as it could have been."

"I look familiar?" inquires Nia.

"Nnnno, but Bella didn't recognize Eliza and Johann so that doesn't prove anything."

"I have been told I sound most distinctive, but maybe do not look it."

"You do have a charming accent."

"Swahili at home, Spanish at school, and lived in England to hear and see English about me! But possibly if we were not wizards we would not live in England or go to Spanish school."

"That makes sense considering that wizard me is from Georgia!"

I THINK he is mostly using this as a frame with which to convey feelings of unreality and dissociation but if it's really wacky it might not be ideal to chance it. Why?

That does sound good. If it's not an emergency I'd give Sean a few days, I'm dragging him and Nia both to a spa retreat in Lime Wood and that might set him right.
