"Well, you see, I'm so used to being ripped off that I need to be weaned onto fairness like I'm being taken off a drug," says Yvette, wryly.

She doesn't seem to be acting like she's been ripped off, though. Because she really feels she hasn't been! Distilled water, at last!! Finally, she can be done with her complicated and clunky setup to distill the damn water manually! Unlike, say, cleaning, manually distilling water just to have a decent alchemical base to work from doesn't even earn her all that much mana, it's just not worth the trouble if you have any other option. Just pay up the damn mana for the cheap as dirt spell and do a couple sudokus or yoga poses or something, and you'll have more mana and have spent less time overall on the whole thing. Why yes, she does keep track of what is and isn't an efficient use of her time and mana, why wouldn't she do that.

Honestly, she'll probably be all bright and chipper for the rest of the day.

Nkoyo is happy to have lunch with Yvette afterwards and force Yvette's presence on Cora and Jowani and have various friends of hers over, including a Zanzibar enclaver she's been courting for a while.

Alexei has lunch with other artificers but once they're done and have some time before class he waits for Yvette so they can go to her room and grab whatever she has to trade.

Yvette has the good sense to behave well in front of the enclaver Nkoyo is courting. This mostly involves being quiet, but it counts!

She notices Alexei waiting for her and excuses herself politely, and then they can go.

…. On the way there she’s reminded that he could have sat with London at breakfast and. Feels things about this. What things, you might ask? What a good question, she doesn’t know.

He doesn't say anything on the way there and seems oblivious to whatever she may or may not be feeling.

She does, actually, manage to put words to it as she's sifting through the various scattered materials she doesn't personally need.

"... Do you have something against the English?" she asks in Russian that is more heavily accented than his English, when he isn't playing it up. She uses the term 'the English' to avoid obviously poking at any specific enclave where someone might hear, which they might, around the dormitories.

He turns around to look at the junior hallway, and he's apparently satisfied with what he sees because he walks back into her room, closes her door, and leans against it. "...no," he says, slowly, also in Russian.

"Then... do you have another you're aiming for, or...?"

He shakes his head again. "Russia doesn't have any enclaves. Our wizard population is very small."

She knows that. She also knows that there was an attempt to get an enclave in Russia, and it fell through somehow.

"Right, I just." God, this is difficult, especially in Russian. Russian isn't her worst language (that would be Sanskrit), but it's very definitely not her best, either. "... it's fine to leave me if," and she needs to pause to put the words together properly, "... someone that could get you out of here calls? I won't hold it against you." Because of course, she'd rather he live.

He shakes his head. "That's not what I'm saying."

"Then... I don't understand."

He looks away and folds his arms. "This is hard to talk about.

"I had a twin brother."

"Oh. I'm so sorry," she murmurs, quietly. It does not take a genius to figure out what happened to his twin.

"I also had an older brother. They didn't... die together. It was two separate occasions. I almost...

"My parents tried very hard to protect them. And they couldn't. And so my mother decided she was going to make a Russian enclave happen."

She nods, somber. "I heard about that. And that it... fell through?"

He nods. "A single person can't make an enclave, but it... was going to happen. What she did was take over the... many groups..." He makes a frustrated noise to himself. "Herding cats. She said once. She did it, she herded them, all the separate ones, they got all the stored mana, the artifices, she worked very hard and...

"They got the spells. They could've made it. The enclave. And they didn't, and my mother never told me why. It was really important to her... to all of them... and they didn't. They decided not to. They had the spells. Still do.

"So she must have had a good reason. Even though my brothers died, and my sisters might also die before they ever get here... making an enclave was not worth it. To her. And I don't know why, and she didn't ask me not to join any enclaves, but she must have had a good reason."

".... My mother also... there was no making, but she could have joined one. And didn't. I never understood. She said it was because of my father. So... whatever terrible thing is happening, you'll. Risk your life to have nothing to do with it?"

He nods, without looking up at her. "She must have had a good reason. She lost two children. She might lose me. She might lose my sisters. And if wasn't worth it. I miss my twin every day, and he was her son, and it wasn't worth it. So I will."

She kind of wants to hug him. Instead she just nods, but then again, he's not looking at her, is he.

"Okay. Well, if you want an ally, regardless of..." and she waves her hand vaguely, unable to manage her typical sarcasm in such a heavy conversation in Russian, "Things, then... you have one. If you want."

Which is a stupid, suicidal thing to offer, to anyone, but also she's a weapon of mass destruction and death in human form, so. She does get certain privileges. Or maybe she's a self absorbed arrogant dumbass who will die horribly as a straggler, left behind on graduation as everyone smarter actually uses the chance they've been given. One of those. She'll find out which.

He does look at her, then, eyes widening a bit.

Then he nods. "You... you too."

That earns a little smile from her.

"Thanks. I won't forget. Though we should probably wrap this up soon, for class."

He nods curtly and then yeah back to business and onto their next class.

Yep! Back to business.

She does kind of wish she'd hugged him, though.

Regardless, the next day at breakfast, she drops in on Scorpius regardless of where he is or who he's talking to.

"Hello~!" she says, in the bright voice she usually reserves for tormenting people with her presence, "I've got second period free, if you still want company for mal hunting."
