“Ah, yes. Conditional calories. A Scholomance special,” she scoffs. She doesn’t say anything further, instead electing to finish off her coffee. If Scorpius wants to talk about it, he can, but she’s not going to drag it out of him.

Not with so many people around, no.

...well since that's well and done they can resume talking about their trade?

Yes, of course, Yvette even apologizes for ‘her brooding break,’ as she puts it.

And when they're almost done: "... you've got Language right now, right? Do you want to compare Latin spell lists? You have it, right?" Lots of people have it, it's got a huge backlog and many popular spells, so it's a safe enough bet.

“… I do, yes. And certainly, I’d be delighted. I’ve got a really good one for fire, actually, associated with the Sack of Rome in 410? If you don’t have it already, I’d be happy to offer it up.”

It’s also the same spell she used to conjure mortal flame in the workroom, but it is the sort of spell that depends on how much power you put in it. Put a little, get a lit candle. Put a lot? Mortal flame.

"...associated with the..."

"Why do you always get horrifying shit?"

"Last I heard no one chooses what the school sends them."

"...yeah we do, we ask the void for stuff—"

"And you've never had the school send you a spell that didn't help at all but which was vaguely related to what you asked for just because it was more in affinity."

"...well, yes."

"We choose what we ask for, the school chooses what we get."

“The horrifying shit is also very memorable,” says Yvette, mildly. But Alexei clearly had the right idea, time to ignore Sofia. Back to talking with Nkoyo, who seems to have decided that if she kills maleficers, she’s all right by her, even if all of her spells are absolutely psycho.

Yeah pretty much. She's a bit... shell shocked for a couple of minutes, but the spell does sound really useful.

Grump. Sofia decides to talk to Cora about something unrelated instead since everyone seems out to get her today.

And soon enough it's time to go to class. Everyone has track-specific double periods now so the incanters go to either language or creative writing together while the artificers have shop (which to most of them is a free period since they have almost all finished their final assignment) and alchemists have lab (same). That's great for having large groups of juniors all going to the same place, although Scorpius is one of the alchemists who's not going to lab.

"How are you feeling, by the way?" he asks Yvette in a quiet tone as they're getting up to bus their trays.

“Better. Bought a proper healing potion and everything.”

"Good.

"...do you, ah, want to go mal hunting again sometime, then?"

“Sure. Not today, though. I seem to be making friends and I want to capitalize on it.”

"Absolutely. I'm happy for you."

“Thanks. And all it took was an attempted murder!”

And then yes, back to her day. Wheeeeee she gets to actually trade spells eeeeheehee!

When Nkoyo sees the spell her eyes pop nearly out of their sockets. She hadn't wanted to believe it was as good as Yvette's description implied but it really, really is. For something this good she offers Yvette's pick of a major arcanum or two minor. The distinction isn't anything baked into reality, it's just a fuzzy classification scheme that people like to use and quibble the edges of, but Yvette's spell is undoubtedly major and very good even accounting for that.

Oh, that’s easy. She wants the two minor arcana, please, preferably ruthlessly practical ones! Water distillation if Nkoyo at all has it, actually. She’s been trying for ages to get the void to give her something that’ll purify water, and the school has not been cooperating.

...really? Okay, Nkoyo feels like she's ripping Yvette off but if she insists.
