"Mm." Alexei smiles a bit to himself, despite this. "It was no harm," he says, Russian accent as thick as it always is whenever he speaks English with everyone other than Yvette. "We will see each other tonight."

"Looking forward to it. Oh, mind the porridge, I saw it bubbling strangely."

And that seems to be that.

Except, of course, for how Yvette is staring at Alexei like he's grown a second head when he returns. The cafeteria isn't very crowded this early in the morning (on a Monday no less). So she actually did manage to overhear what she thought was Alexei... Turning down a seat at an enclaver table?? To come sit with her???? What?

He does sit with her, yes, not looking like he's aware he's done anything strange. He just wordlessly offers her his food offering as usual.

Sofia and Natalya don't look surprised, either.

Also, Sofia has decent food offerings for her this morning, too, which is kind of novel; typically she skimps, doing the bare minimum to not be seen as horribly breaching Scholomance etiquette rules.

??????????

She will accept the food offerings because she is a teenager and these are calories, and coffee, but.

"Thank you," she says, "but it's fine if you want to go talk shop with Alfie?? I'll, you know, sort myself out."

"No."

Wait, that's his stone cold no argument broached no. Not a confused 'I don't understand why you are asking this' no, that's just. There's just no getting past that one, ever. But?? But he could absolutely score an alliance with a major enclave for graduation???

"......... okay," she agrees, stupidly, instead of one of her usual clever retorts.

Liu comes out of the queue soon afterwards, with the South African trio immediately after her; they probably came upstairs together.

Honestly, Yvette is still too surprised to really properly try to call anyone over, but there is in fact space at this table. It is a strange bright side of her being the one to hold it. Something something she's strange and scary and without Scorpius right next to her to attract people over, they will generally stay away. Nkoyo might be able to find herself and her friends better, but Liu probably can't.

It doesn't seem like they're particularly looking for somewhere else, though; as soon as they spot Yvette and the Russians they make a beeline for her table.

"Are these seats taken?" Nkoyo asks.

(And there's Scorpius at the food line fighting something that came out of the porridge.)

"Wh, uh, no, go ahead," says Yvette, breaking out of the loop of 'no really, why would you do that' that she'd been a bit stuck in. Uh. Food, yes, she should eat food. And coffee, she should have coffee, no matter how much its caffeinating effects are probably psychosomatic.

"I heard Yaakov talking about the shrike beak you got," Liu says to Yvette quietly. Not too quiet for others to hear, just the quiet that she usually is.

Oh, good, something to actually react to. Yes, excellent, thank you Liu.

“He did seem very happy with it! It might have been just what he needed for an end of term project. I’ve got some extra leather from the shrike too, if you need it for anything.”

"I don't think I need it for anything, but thank you."

"I do," Nkoyo pipes up. "How much do you have and how much do you want for it?"

This is a surprise, but a welcome one! She can totally work with this.

“A lot of its in strangely shaped pieces, but…”

And then she can absolutely get to working out a deal with Nkoyo, happily explaining what she’d used to cure the hide as well.

Scorpius walks up to their table while they're discussing the details of their trade, remains of porridge and mal entrails splattered on his clothes and tray much emptier than the other juniors' as a consequence of splash damage from the fight to other food items making them inedible.

"Taken?"

"—no, not at all," Nkoyo interrupts herself to say.

"Thank you," he says, sitting down with a slightly heavy whoof and a wince.

She eyes him and his tray, then sighs heavily, rolls her eyes, and forks over a bit of toast to Scorpius.

“You realize that with what you give them, New York should at the very least make sure you’re fed,” she grumbles, irritated.

"I'm sure if I sat with them they would," he grumbles right back. "But thank you."

Nkoyo looks between them and ventures, "Trouble in paradise?"

Scorpius barks out a humorless laugh. "You could say that."
