Who's going to notice, indeed [x2]. Although Natalya is not as good as Scorpius at not letting it show, she's mostly thinking about it from a different perspective. She is, also, very sure that Yvette is wrong, but she has a lot more specific reason to.

Alexei himself doesn't notice, though, and Alfie's enthusiasm is enough to get him talking. "You could do that, yes," he agrees. "You could also use this to overlay multiple shields of different kinds on top of each other... or maybe use an amplifier to help."

"So, Yvette!" Magnus says, a bit too loudly. "What was your shop assignment?"

Alfie doesn't give a shit about Magnus right now.

"Well, sort of. My affinity's defensive magic. Some shields don't always like each other, layering them can sometimes get them to clash and waste power. I think for it to properly work out you'd need to make sure to only have shields that can sit down with each other and make nice..."

"Heavier than I would have liked," says Yvette, in a perfect deadpan. Really, Tebow? You're so irritated that someone else has the spotlight that you have to ask a question you don't even really care about? Who cares what the shop project of a damned incanter is, c'mon.

He waits a couple of seconds until it becomes clear that Yvette isn't going to answer his question and then he, he...

...he's really not sure? He doesn't know what happens next, he hasn't been so thoroughly stonewalled before.

"Magnus, if you and Yvette would like to have a conversation it would be better for you to just go sit next to her rather than cross talk over the boys," says Sarah sweetly, the first words she's spoken since she and Alfie sat down.

"No, I think I've said about all I'd like to."

"No conversation works well enough, too," she agrees.

Alexei managed to not get distracted despite Magnus's most valiant attempts and is still discussing his artifice with Alfie thank you so much.

...okay. Uh.

As far as this part of the table's concerned, the only thing that matters is talk about shields and shield sharers. (Testing with different types of shields, and seeing which ones make nice together, maybe actually taking a look at what Alexei has made, if that would be okay...)

It's honestly not even the worst meal she's had. Conversation wise, anyway. The meals themselves are about all the same level of vaguely horrible, with occasional outliers of literally deadly poisonous.

But yes, Tebow has absolutely made what sort of person he is clear, and so what he will be getting from Yvette is yet more stonewalling. If he tries. Which he might not be brave enough to, many aren't.

No, he takes the hint, or perhaps his ego is too bruised for him to want to put it on the line again. Either way he mostly gets reduced to sullen silence.

And since Alfie and Alexei are hitting it off so well Scorpius turns some attention to the Russian girls, Ibrahim, and Yaakov.

Oh, good. Then Yvette will just... resume being a ghost, then. She guesses. A weirdly sad ghost. Still! Not the most unpleasant meal she's ever had, so. Yay for that.

Alexei sort of confusedly agrees to meet up with Alfie later at some point to show him the sharer but demurs when invited to do so right now and instead is going to go back to his room. He's honestly feeling a little bit oversocialised, which he doesn't exactly say but Alfie seems to pick up on anyway.

The enclavers seem to all be going to the library and Ibrahim sort of hopefully trails after Scorpius just in case but chooses to go back to his room too instead once Scorpius clarifies that he'll be going on a night patrol for mals before curfew.

Yvette will also be going back to her room. She's got some gardening to do, and some herbs to collect. Now that it's the weekend, it'll be prime time to start finding someone to buy a proper damned healing potion off of. The library's nice and safe and good for learning and all, but it's not good for clawing the resources one needs to survive another day. Working through a compost heap made partially out of your own excrement to get quality alchemy ingredients for an alchemy track kid that can churn out healing potions by the gallon? Much, much more worth her time right now.

".... congratulations," she offers Alexei softly, on the way there.

He blinks in undiluted bewilderment at her.

".... Yahontov," she says, a little chidingly. "If your sharer is even half as good as London thinks it is..." She raises her eyebrows. "So. Congratulations."

Oh...kay? "Thank you," he says, quietly.

Sofia and Natalya exchange Looks and sigh to each other in unison but don't say anything.

And Ibrahim and Yaakov have mostly just been quietly talking to each other, walking close enough that they're still relevantly a group but not really very integrated.

God, but Alexei can be dense sometimes. Maybe that's what helps him be a good artificer. Just bang the metal off of the denser-than-an-anvil head and it'd ping into whatever magical shape he wanted it. No, no, that's far too silly to be true.

Anyway, she's quiet the rest of the way back. When she gets to her room, she politely says good night to everyone, and does her usual checks for safety of her room. Then she gets to doing her scut work (well, really it was a worse word than that), with lots of singing to her little alchemical plants about how they should grow big and strong, trickling the faint wisps of mana it's worth sacrificing for a damned healing potion. When she's done, she cleans herself up (and checks for mals) and then gets out her old dagger and sits with it on the bed for a little while. There's sort of another reason why people don't make weapons this late in school. They tend to already have one. And they can get really mad if they get replaced.

"I would love to keep you, if you'd like to stay," she says softly to it, in French. "But I understand if you don't, too. You've treated me beautifully, and been loyal and sharp and wonderfully weighted this entire time I've been in this damned place. And then I went and made another dagger, like the bitch we both know I am." She pats the sheath of the blade, affectionately. Apologetically. It is definitely staying sheathed right now. "But I didn't make you, and I wasn't the first to use you, and. ... It'd be nice if you could find a home somewhere, if you wanted one, with someone else. You could be the disappearing dagger, showing up to help lost freshmen or, or. Something. Or you could stay with me, and I will keep you, and. ... I might pass you on." To a child. Like this one had been passed to her, by her mother. If she ever, ever decided to make that same horrible decision, to bring another child into this horrible, horrible world filled with monsters that were far too real. But she might not. How could she? The best place any child of hers could ever end up would be here. "Um. I'm making a hash of this. Just... you are special and beautiful and deadly and deserve all the best. Wherever that is. And you get to decide."

And then she very carefully places her old dagger under her bed, still sheathed, and takes a little while to coo over her athame and her fixed door, and ward her room, and then she goes to bed.

Her old dagger is gone by the morning. She wishes it well.
