He pinches the bridge of his nose.  "I suppose it's a better choice than telling another student.  But, Miss Whitlock, you understand that to keep a secret, you must refrain from telling even the vast majority of trustworthy people, because the more people you tell, the more chances there are for something to go wrong, or for you to be incorrect about who is trustworthy; and that only needs to happen once.  Conspiracies have to be small, and - it seems to be becoming my responsibility to restrict the size of this one."

"This may be terribly unfair of me, but... I think that right now I can countenance telling one set of parents.  It may well be wiser than remaining, myself, the only adult in the group.  You three will have to decide for yourselves which set you tell."

She glances between the other two.

Tag sighs.  "Honestly I'm gonna move out as soon as I can anyway.  My folks don't need to know right now, if it's really a bad idea."

"Uh I have literally known my parents for like three days, foster people are hard to read because they're almost all nice at first basically? But I think they're not the ultra committed ride-or-die for a kid they just met type? Like, would not tell them unless it's a 'hey this is why you need to pack up and go' thing."

She nods.  "Okay.  I'll... make up some excuse to get my parents to stop by the library after school."

"...Thanks, guys."

"No problem."

"It's what friends are for."

Aww.  Grin.

Friendly shoulder nudge!

"So. Practice session? Or should we head?"

"I won't ask you to stay much longer today, but we should at least schedule our next visit.  Do you have a particular two days that work best for you?  It would be better for them to be spread out, rather than two days in a row, for instance."

"I haven't super figured out clubs yet but I probably won't be doing too many - Fridays and uh Tuesdays?"

"Perfect."

She'll ask assorted scheduling questions - what should she bring, when should she expect to be done... Then head out with her friends.

"That went pretty well, I think."

"Yeah! There's a reasonable person under all those rules."

She giggles.  "He's a lot better at meaning well than Principal Flutie."

"Maybe I can make a reasonable person out of Flutie, too."

"That'll be the fuckin' day," Tag says amicably.  (That's his amicable face, can't you tell.)

"Hey, don't underestimate my charm."

"Well, good luck."

"Thanks! You two."

And after some light conversation, she'll head home. (Running, instead of taking the bus. She has enough time, and could use the exercise.)

Kaylee takes the bus home, composing her lie. Maybe some kind of... special parent-teacher conference. Mr. Giles heard that she wants to be a doctor and wants to get her and her parents all in a room together to discuss career trajectory? Is that a thing? That might be a thing. She's pretty sure Mr. Giles liked her anyway, before all this; she studies in the library a lot, it's not that much of a stretch.

She's home soon enough.

And at dinner:

"So, you know Mr. Giles the librarian, right?"

"Yes," her father says.
