Edie was perusing the latest correspondence from her fork. She still should have been paying enough attention to realize that the door didn't go where it ought before it swung shut and she couldn't sense anyone else anymore, but she wasn't.
After opening and closing the door a couple times to make sure she hadn't just been abducted somehow, she looks around.
"...oh, by manifested several months along you mean manifested the powers, I was imagining they just showed up-"
"No, I meant manifested the powers, the one who was carrying Emily ended up with a ton of washers and steel pennies stuck to their stomach, it was apparently adorable."
"Were you there when she said she had two dads because of weird mutant biology, I forget."
"They didn't have time to do a lot of population statistics before everything went to hell, but they knew at least one other person besides their parents with that feature."
"I mentioned it to the other Emily and she said she had been an accident too and now I'm wondering if my parents would have considered it worth mentioning if we were."
"And assuming thirty thousand years don't pass there in the next six months."
"Yeah. It'd be - interesting - if that's what happened - suggest that worlds are running at random, rather than just 'some faster than others' -"
"Yeah. I should probably actually check to see if I can open a door there."
"If you can we could probably go in and build hospitals and so forth right now."
