I really do wish it hadn't been necessary but giving Findekano things he has the leeway to ask for that his Maitimo wouldn't like is really important.

Yeah I had that entire conversation and I could put it in slightly more context but I'm not sure contextualizing it for Findekáno and by extension Midnight is a great idea.

Maitimo likes people by default. Midnight'd notice - and react badly - if he were an exception and it wouldn't be productive. Maitimo can partition liking people and pretty much all the normal consequences of liking people as necessary. And our information on what Midnight's actual governance looks like isn't actually that unfavorable - this is a society where the tech level is 'swords' that routinely generously pensions off human war vets with a not-too-bad casualty rate at age 24, etc. - and we don't currently strongly expect to be able to sail in with a better idea and hold a clean coup.
