"Without knowing why I can't say for sure if Memorize would fix it. You could wait until later and use an Augury to check if you'd regret spending the points."

"Sounds like a plan. My shoes survived graduation so it is not an emergency. Levitation sounds great, wizard flight is too expensive to do all the time."

"Some species of witch get it for free." She flexes her wings.

"Tragically I am a human. So I only get one thing up to rank 4 and one up to rank 5 and everything else caps at - three? Anything else besides Divination and its associated boost that has an important inflection point at the high end?"

"Witchery, inconveniently. Familiarity. Alchemy but Lucy already has that one and you're specializing. Portals. Necromancy technically."

"What's the Familiarity one?"

"There's a variable-power-cost thing that you can use to upgrade a rank five familiar...oh! One of the abilities you can give it is to make it able to throw off any mind control on you. Downside is that the two of you can no longer go more than about a kilometer away from each other."

"...oof. Choices, choices... what else is good for throwing off mind control, anything? I can probably finesse it on the wizard end with enough mana."

"Psychometry--that's the elemental magic associated with the Mind aspect--is the standard go-to. As a non-sorceress, you can only take one elemental magic that isn't in-affinity for you, and there isn't one that's been developed for body or soul. I'm not aware of any currently existing relics for it but people do invent new relics--it's tricky, but not impossible."

"And the portal inflection point?"

"Rank four is when portals go interdimensional."

"...seems important, considering, I don't want to drag around Lisao's mom for all eternity.

Okay, I do have anti mind control wizard spells, I will sleep myself a ton of mana and bother Aadhya and make a magic earring or something incorporating those anytime paranoia about mind control rises to the top of my triage list and if I wind up with a familiar concerned about my mental integrity I will encourage them to try, like, prayer, and pay you back if you send me a warlock to break me out of it, I guess?"

"Well, I do respond to prayers about Outsiders, and those are one of the biggest sources of nonconsensual mental alteration, but it usually happens slowly enough that the witch themself has time to pray about it. We'll see if involving wizards results in more third-party prayers about mind control."

"It's not overwhelmingly common, it just disproportionately freaks me out. Tentatively four ranks in portals."

"Alright, four ranks in portals costs ten points...should I assume you'd like to put the rank five in Divination, then?"

"Probably? Is rank five portals better?"

"For your purposes, I think the biggest benefit to rank five portals is the ability to portal to places you haven't been, but rank five Divination gives you the ability to mask locations from scrying. Which is good for privacy."

"Mm. Tentative five in divination. I think I don't want to lock in an elementalism this early in the game... hexes look good, three of that. One rank consortation is net positive, right?"

"Yep."

"So one 'a those. Runes also looks awesome, I think I want three of that..."

"Oh, yeah, very useful, even non-Academics generally take at least one of Runes and Alchemy."

"Yeah, I'll pick up an Alchemy and investigate for synergy but, again, specialization. Hm, how much have I got left to play with."

"Sixteen."

"Are there more expensive wild magics you didn't mention?"

"Yeah, I was starting on the really bargain end...there's Technopath, for ten points, which approximately lets you be the internet, there's--hm, I wouldn't normally recommend Aspicio Mori--and I do think I don't recommend it for you--but what it does is show you the most efficient way to kill things, and that could be very useful for maw-mouths. There's an obscure fate twist for fifteen points that would put you in touch with these odd brothers who make fantastically magical mobile homes."
