"...I don't know.  It can't quite be, because it works from people's specific memories; it can't have all of that in there.  But it's got to be easier when there's something right there because artefacts made that way are so much less expensive."  Hm...  "It's been in the paper a few times, interviewing a seamster about the creation of a specific kind of item."

"My archive doesn't have anything specific to your timeline with magic in it so I can't look that up."

"Yeah, it's just why I know that."  Shrug.  "I guess the first thing I should sew is a set of clothes for myself, in case the fabric I'm wearing can help me target home later."

"Is that how anything works?"

"I think so.  At least for me.  Seamsters keep talking about how a lot of getting magic to work is - believing it will.  Or convincing yourself it will.  And to me it seems like using fabric from home should make it easier to get there."

"Do you believe this is fabric specific or should I store biological samples?"

"It can't hurt, I guess."

"That really depends on the biological samples."

"Ha.  I don't think they'll hurt our chances of being able to get somewhere useful, I mean.  Even if I don't really expect them to help."

"You would have to be the one to figure out if there was a way they could help. If you are very sure with the information you have right now that this will not help then any idea to that effect you have later could be confabulated."

"I'm not very sure of that.  What are you seeing as the difference between confabulating an idea and convincing myself that something should work?"

"I think that depends on what leveling up in fabric magic is like."

"Just in that, there are presumably things that no one will ever be able to do?  Or do you mean something else."

"I mean does it impart information in the process, such that if you do not know specifically that biological samples are known not to help, you might discover that they do legitimately through magical improvement, or does it not, such if you do not know that biological samples are known to help, later coming to the conclusion that they may will be just a rearrangement of facts you already have."

"....I think I don't know that.  I might learn once I level up for the first time."

"So probably I should take some, just in case, since you will have substantial material turnover the more time passes."

"Sure.  You want me to spit in something?"

"Yes. Is that all you want to do? I admit I cannot claim to be very good at blood draws but you probably do not need all of your fingernails. By mass, not numerically. And a few strands of hair, and I can store whatever next goes in the toilet."

"Spit hair and fingernails seem like plenty."  He doesn't even think this is going to work; it's not very fantasy for biological samples to be the key, here.  Or if they are, he suspects he can collect them later.  If anything it seems possible that he should start growing out his hair, to use as... thread?  Does hair make good thread?  Hm.

Here comes another one of Rubelite with a vial and a little tool that is more like a V-tip cuticle trimmer than like nail clippers but suffices to get a clean crescent of nail off a finger.

Okay.

She walks off with the samples without saying anything once they are collected.

That's reasonable.  He didn't say anything either and also has already been talking to... him?  Her?  Her-but-the-way-a-ship-is-a-her.

"Maybe I should start sewing soon."

"Okay. It will probably not come up because the Radch does not exist here but I am abstractly curious if you can make gloves that do not have problems. They wear gloves at all times in public in the Radch and I have been unsure how I should construe this to apply to these."
