"I got here somehow, didn't I?"

"So did I and my world of origin doesn't have this."

"Yeah.   ...Technically neither does mine, but the Raverians portaled there somehow."

"I did not detect any people or fabric or beads or anything like that before I was here."

"Did everything go all black and white for you?"

"...in a manner of speaking."

"Same for me," he notes unnecessarily.  Ugh.  "But the first few levels go a lot quicker than the higher ones, let alone the last, so it's still probably our best shot."

"What do you need to do that, and should I be flying anywhere while you're at it?"

"....Do you have a way to make needles and stuff?  I have some in my backpack, but - how careful do I have to be with them?"

"I think I can figure out something that would be a usable needle but it might not have all the virtues of a needle that you expect."

"Like what?"

"I don't know what is important about needles, so if I fabricate them, they might not have all the important qualities. If I knew specifically what might be wrong with them I could guess if I would be able to solve it, but I don't."

"Normal Earth needles work fine.  It's who's using them that makes the difference."

"I am not sure what properties of normal Earth needles are important. I don't sew things and this has not been a priority research area."

He nods.  "Maybe the fabricator can do them.  The magic fabricator, I mean; I'm not used to there being technological ones in real life.  I think they mostly do, you know, fabric, but I didn't hear anything about the magical revolution being held up by needing to go mining or anything, just that it happened as soon as there were fabricators."  This one is currently printing him a bedsheet (white, cotton) so he can't check just yet.

"Will it do beads, and thread that is not made into fabric?"

He tries.  Needles go, yes, here they are.  They seem to be made of very dense, hard fabric rather than made of metal, and they come arranged pin-like in a small rectangle of muslin.  Beau taps at one with his fingernail.

"Huh, I think it's fabric that's been dipped in plastic or something."  He pulls one partially back out of the fabric and then tries something like a running stitch, poking it through and out of the cloth.  "Seems sharp enough, though."  He tries for thread and gets it a moment later, though the spool is the same material as the needles.

"That seems good then?"

"Yeah."  Beads?

Beads!  They're woven into a very loose, floppy fabric - almost more of a net made of thread than proper cloth - but yes, here are the pony beads he was imagining.

"This magic system is very specific."

"Yeah.  - But if you mean the fabricator... it makes fabric.  Somebody made it that way, same as somebody made the cornucopia to make food.  It isn't inherent to the magic."

"What other things can be made?"

"I think almost anything.  Especially if there's something to copy from.  The thing that's special about these artefacts is that they can do a bunch of different stuff, but even me and Charlie - my dad - could afford something that creates three different kinds of sandwich whenever you want.  But I think it's harder if you don't have an example to point the magic at."

"So someone made all these foods and all these fabrics to show it?"
