He's been at the last fort on the Mendevian side of the border for a day and a half when one of the local soldiers finds him. "Ser, um, Aemine?" He salutes a bit tentatively. "That, uh, Chelish patrol with the cleric is on its way in, did you want to-" His expression makes it clear he's not sure why he'd want to do anything with the Chelish troops if he wasn't ordered to.
"Not each time," Khalida points out. (She's taken her gloves off to warm her hands on her porridge bowl and there's a tattoo visible on the back of her left hand, a single line curving around to form most of the outline of a mask.) "Sometimes one notices he intends to say something and kicks him first."
"It'd be pretty cruel to disallow me laughing at things! ...I suppose nothing technically says I shouldn't tell them, either, but I have the vague feeling I should take a class about it first."
"At what point should a hypothetical become an incitement to unchastity in others," Khalida intones, mock-seriously, "and in what proportion should the incitement be considered..."
He laughs at Khalida's demonstration. "Exactly so. I don't mean to say there is a class, just-- I feel like there can be various things wrong with them but there aren't always, and-- I don't feel like I-- have the experience to know where the lines are?" He's not actually either squirming or blushing, but still gives the impression of this being a near occasion of both.
"Ohhh, and were it sufficiently cutting, or one intended to hurt the person's feelings or their reputation, that may be an evil act..."
"Yes, I think that's the one I'd worry most about – not even a specific person, necessarily, though you're entirely right about that, but something that speaks of, say, all women badly, or makes some sort of ill-treatment sound acceptable... But on the other hand it's not as if it's Evil to say something someone might be wrongly inclined by, if you didn't mean it and most people wouldn't take it so, or else we'd barely be able to hold a normal conversation, and those are part of a Good life."
Khalida stifles another yawn and shakes her head. "Were I a paladin, I don't think I should talk at all."
He smiles at her. "And were I a wizard, I think my head would ache all the time. We're all of us naturally suited to different things."
She returns his smile and fidgets with her porridge, but if she was going to say anything it's preempted by yet another yawn.
"I am sorry for keeping you up." Really he should do his counseling in random storage rooms next time, rather than locking everyone out of their bunks. "But do either finish your breakfast or have another go later at that too, mm?"
"Yes, yes, 'm eating," she grumbles quietly, but Prestidigitates her porridge sweeter and takes another bite, offering him the caught spell as she chews. "It's not solely your cause, I was accustomed to reading late and rising later before this."
"Always harder to keep to a schedule when you're traveling and every place is different," he nods.
And at the spell gesture, "Whatever you're having, thank you."
Then she releases and catches it again, and now his porridge tastes like date syrup. "And that it's a schedule so much earlier- we were keeping tavern hours back in Sothis, but dawn doesn't argue."
"Ah, that's true. And it'll just keep moving earlier, so it's not as if you can even get used to it. I never thought before how tricky a combination wizard and cleric is, sleep-wise."
He makes an appreciative noise at the flavor. "Mm, dates? I like this one."
"Mmhmm- I found it more canny to use a flavor that shouldn't ordinarily change the feel."
"Right, I can see how that works better. And there's more sweet things like that than savoury ones. Marzipan, or rosewater and sugar, or honey and cream, or the sort of orange preserves that're boiled smooth..." It turns out Marcus has eaten rather a lot of fancy desserts in his life. "Did you know you can put cinnamon in food?... Though I've only heard about that one."
"I guess you have to have tasted a thing to Prestidigitate it, you can't just find out?"
