"Yes, true, one allows for mortal fallibility, but I meant the Mendevians."

"Most of us can do what we like, thank the stars. And y'could ask your paladin about the celibacy thing, if he ain't too uptight to talk about it. ...Or even if he is, that can be pretty funny."

They both snicker, nearly simultaneously.

She grins. "If it's really funny you gotta come back an' tell me what he said."

"You still- ah.  Miss."  Ferrer's stuck his head around the doorframe, and gives Marta a cautious nod.

"Oh hello."

All right, time to pick up her bucket and get going. This conversation clearly isn't going to benefit from her standing right here, but maybe she can pick some of it up from the hallway if she goes slow. "Thanks for the water."

"You're welcome!"

Then as Marta leaves, she can hear the man with the big ugly pentagram brand saying, "not starting any fights, then?"

And Cambra arrives back at the room a few minutes later.  "Hey.  Guess it's my turn now?"

"Mhm. I'm trying to do things right this time โ€“ uh, please tell me if I end up doing something else alarming anyway...  But here's the temporary confidentiality oath written down, look it over and see if it seems like a reasonable thing to be doing and if you'd like any changes."

Cambra takes a bit longer to read it over than Ferrer did, but he manages.

"...what, literally anything?"

"Literally anything," a definitive nod.  "You tell me you mean to cut my throat tomorrow night, and I will put down my sword and take off my armor and do my best to fall asleep, though the 'to the best of my ability' is there in case I fail at it."  There's a shadow of a sharp grin on his face, as if part of him is looking forward to having his word tested that thoroughly.

"...are all Good people like this or are you just insane."

He laughs, and there's a thread of pleased fondness in it.  "Good people are perfectly fine, paladins are probably all at least a little insane, and I'll grant you that I'm worse than most."

Cambra huffs out a sigh and flops back on the opposite bunk.  "And if I, I, spent the whole hour insulting your mother wi'every vile word I know in three languages, you'd smile like that across th'breakfast table next morning an' every day for the rest of the trip.  Because it's that important to you nobody ever be able to guess what we talked about."

"Yes."

"How's that not lying, then, just- with your face?  Is there a secret 'confidential information excepted' on everything you do?"

"The proper way to do it is to, hmm, convince my heart to treat the conversation like a dream, so that I would still truthfully like you. And I find it easy to like people in any case. I might have more trouble in the other direction, if anything..."

"But in the end, yes, you could say there is. I'd guess it's not even formally considered possible to lie with your face? Because... there's already any number of reasons why my face might not perfectly match how I feel about whoever I'm looking at, right, maybe I'm just smiling because I'm in a good mood or not smiling because my head aches โ€“ so it doesn't seem quite the same thing as lying, to add one more possible reason. Though," a pause to think through the implications of that sentence, but no, it's fine, "maybe it would feel like I was lying, if I were ever in a situation where it was a big difference... I'm not sure what I'd do with that. It is a very good question, and I should really talk to my order about it before it comes up. If you're all right with that."

"Sure.  Don't use my name, I guess."

"Obviously not."  He's not Chelish but he has some concept of not unnecessarily risking getting people in trouble.

"So, did that make sense?  ...Or do you want my oath before talking more about it, which would be very reasonable to want, unless you have more questions about it instead."

"Don't... think I particularly have questions."  Aside from 'are you insane', which he already answered.

"Anything you say to me for the next hour or until both of us agree we're done, I will not tell anyone about, nor to the best of my ability act on in any way, without your uncoerced permission, except for any parts of it I find out about from another source in a way that would have still happened without this conversation. I so swear on my Law and in Iomedae's name."

And now all he can think of is stupid harmless facts to tell the paladin and see if it trips him up later, great.
