in which we coerce a bell into learning mind control

"Welp. Let's hope she isn't too escalatory, I guess."

"Yeah."

"I wonder if she could be satisfied with something from my home...I wouldn't trust her with most of it right now, but if I could figure something out that let her ethically get her fix, and I was careful enough that it couldn't be disassembled and repurposed...I don't know, even if it was theoretically possible it would take some work, and I don't know enough about her deal to even speculate if it's theoretically possible."

"...what do you have that could let someone get a fix of being loved by everyone?"

"The first thought that comes to mind is red honey, which lets you experience part of someone else's life. It's, uh, not the most ethical thing out there, I don't know all the details but it's supposed to be harmful to the 'donor.' My second thought is finding a creature from Parabola, the realm of dreams, that longs for nothing more than to find a target it can affectionately obsess over that feels love so intensely it could sate her by itself. I don't know that there is such a creature, mind, but it wouldn't surprise me. But I don't expect that, if anything worked, it would be my first or second thoughts. The Neath is full of bizarre curiosities; and it seems like the resources here could render safe some that aren't ordinarily safe for human beings."

"Huh. Your world sounds so - curious is a good word for it, I guess. Anyway. Shall we travel as a pack to the library till we need to go to bed?"

"My world is extremely curious. That sounds like a good plan."

To the library they go.

The group disperses to research various topics. Emily starts looking into hypnotism since it's a group weak point and she doesn't have any mind control capabilities yet, unless you count knowing how to build a Cerebro. Conveniently there are clearly labeled sections for all six major disciplines taught.

Kiri heads for the tech section. She's going to need to have a general idea what any of the tech stuff is to deal with advanced aliens and get enough out of the class in the subject to make it stick.

Erek approaches the librarian to ask about e-books.

The librarian is very helpful! Ebooks exist. Not all of the books in the library exist in ebook format but there are a lot of ebooks nonetheless. She has universal ethernet cables or they can be downloaded wirelessly like so.

Lucy starts looking into biology and cosmology, because she knows a comparative advantage when she sees one. ("Biology" ends up cashing out to a pile of books each from the chemistry and chi sections.)

Edie approaches the librarian once Erek has finished with them and is scooping up ebooks with a bandwidth spoon.

"What is there on the worlds our classmates come from?"

"The library is guaranteed to have comprehensive texts regarding the universes of each of the students attending MCU in any given class; however, I am not allowed to identify a given student's universe to you. Once you've been out and about in the neighborhoods you can ask for books matching up to specific neighborhoods, and I can give you books about the universe that doesn't have a neighborhood, but I'm not allowed to specifically identify a given universe as being attached to a given student."

"...Okay...can you direct me to books about magic systems that include wands, possibly filtered against the word 'Imperio,' and can you give me anything related to, uh, birds and ragged black clothing?"

"That I can do."

Anfael gets Edie set up with books about witches and witches and wizards.

It would be more comfortable to just look through books on his own. But it would be more effective to also ask the librarian for help.

"Can you direct me to--books that can help me find more ethical power sources for my magic? And maybe ways to use magic to defend against non-magical mind control?"

"Hm! This'll take me a moment--there isn't an ethics filter in the library filing system--okay, yes, this way."

Kiri has a rather intimidating stack of books on technological uplift at this point and looks for helpful signage on the checkout policy and if there's any way to get books copied.

"You can check out up to ten books at a time and there aren't copying facilities provided by the library, I'm sorry."

"I have a copier along," Erek tells her.

"Oh, cool, thanks." She starts skimming early parts of her stack to sort them into "copy for reference" and "read for background".

Lucy gets to a good stopping spot in one of her books and approaches Erek. "Something I forgot to ask earlier--can you eat things? I know Idarai said you don't have to."
