"Yes..." He does nothing observable for a few moments, then shakes his head. "And it didn't work." 

"The things you get power from are 'elementals', right? I have elemental powers..."

"Elementals is the word for them, but 'nature spirits' might be more accurate, honestly. They can be connected to just about any part of the ecosystem that isn't directly caused by humans." 

"Okay, but does fire qualify?"

"Yes, but fire isn't particularly associated with the mind under my system...I can try, but I'm not optimistic." 

"It's worth the quick test."

He checks, and then shakes his head. 

"Oh well. And I have no idea if I can counter things, for aforementioned reasons..."

"Do you want to check in a low-stakes situation."

"...it would probably be a good idea, uh, at least if the first magic class comes and goes without me having a major breakthrough on that."

"I'm a good test subject because Edie can almost certainly put me back if you mess up."

"Okay. To be clear I have never in fact made a mistake when trying to do things to, like, cure addictions and stuff, it's just I have no idea if that's a coincidence or if my finesse is in fact just naturally great."

"Well, I certainly won't complain if you don't mess up." 

"Do you have a test in mind?"

"Someone who isn't you or Edie does something to my brain and you see if you can revert it? I don't know much about what people here other than Edie can do." 

"I'm in possession of a number of concerning substances but I don't have them on me."

"I don't have much right now either."

He makes a face. "As long as the only thing we're trying to accomplish is testing whether things can be reversed externally, I can probably come up with a reversible spell that should suit our purposes, but it will take me a few minutes."

"Is it something we can help with or nah?"

"I think it would take longer to explain than to create the spell."

Nod.

"Alright, I have it," he says a few minutes later. 

Emily checks in with Edie, externally imperceptibly, then says, "I'm ready whenever. Kiri, do you want me to step within range first?"

"It makes it a slightly less good experiment and a slightly better chance I'll be able to do it cleanly, your call."

Emily doesn't step into Kiri's range. "Hit me," she tells Idarai.
