He casts the spell. It won't have any perceptible effect now, but if she were to encounter a wild goose, it would produce an uncontrollable panic. "Done."

Emily steps within Kiri's range. 

"..." Kiri gives Idarai an amused look and starts picking the spell away from the texture of Emily's mind.

"I thought it would be harmless, under the circumstances." 

"It's a good choice, just very... specific." Pick pick.

"That's actually safer, when dealing with mental things. It's not that I doubt your or Edie's ability to clean up, but..."

"Yeah, makes sense. - I think I'm done."

"Looks good," Edie says approvingly. 

"Okay. Which doesn't guarantee I'll be equally effective against other random shit people can pull, but between me and Edie and Lucy we're maybe hopefully covered?"

"I think it would be arrogant to assume we were completely covered, but that would be true no matter how many precautions we took."

"I think there are additional precautions we should take, but probably not until we've had any classes--we should make sure to cover everyone's weaknesses. I'm an incredibly powerful psychic, but even in my own universe there are ways of hedging me out. If I have any advantage against magic it's my reflexes, not any kind of innate resistance. I don't think anyone here knows anything about hypnosis."

"Should we be recruiting more? Any decent hypnotists on the roll so we don't get snagged on the way to the first day of hypnosis class?"

"I didn't sense anything explicit in the way of hypnotism from anyone in the auditorium. Which doesn't prove anything, since I've never seen it to know it, but it does mean I don't have a good idea of who to put out feelers to. And is why I want to wait until we've had a hypnotism class before we go hard on trying to build hypnotism defences." 

"We might want to spend the rest of those who need to sleep's time in the library. I can read very fast and process it while I'm working on the communicators."

"Excellent plan! We can see if we can find anything out about the other students' worlds, too, I want to know what else that guy can do with that wand, and what's up with 'Lady Clara,' and also the woman who pulled a knife on you, since those are the ones who've demonstrated active hostility, but anything else about anyone else is also good."

"I don't think we know enough about 'Lady Clara' to start looking, we don't have any words about what's up with her, really, and I don't think you can search in the library by telepathic signature."

"I sort of want to know more about what's up with Addy, although that's more personal curiosity than any kind of principled triage."

"She ended up rooming with creepy ambient affection lady, so that's not nothing."

"Creepy Ambient Affection Lady?"

"The blonde who asked about non-enslaving forms of mind control. She has a pathological need to be loved by everyone around her." 

"Yep, that's creepy." 

"Preliminary guess on how we'll do against that?"

"Her thing is legible to me, I can block it, but at some point she's going to notice I'm blocking her unless I get a lot more invasive about it." 

"Invasive?" 

"I could fuck with her sensory perceptions bigtime. Not thrilled with the idea but. If it came to the point where it was the least of practical evils."
