Marin intends to enter the bridge. It's a procedure she's implemented thousands of times before; leaving Nymet requires using the bridge, and Marin Pathfinder of Nymet could not have survived cooped up in a single innangarð for her entire life. It's not an exaggeration to say that she has spent more of her life in the bridges than in any innangarð. She knows how to operate them: entry, traversal, and exit. It should take a moment's thought to conclude her journey. Instead, as her staff strikes the earth, the bridge opens...somewhere else. She's standing on a bridge- an ordinary bridge, one made from materials and not the raw power of the gods- in an unfamiliar innangarð, with no sign of the bridge she just exited behind her.
Sure, they can check out the 'gravity' plating. That concept translates interestingly; if she ever gets home, she'll need to share all this with the philosophers.
Marin waits to cast any magic, here, just looks for more writing. Two heads are better than one.
They follow the grav plating and get off when they reach the next deck. There's a diagram on the wall.
"I wonder what those symbols mean."
"Let's keep moving. There's only one way to find out."
Her magic helps them move more quickly, but the clock is still ticking. About half of their time has probably passed, although she hasn't measured exactly how long their loop is. Not more than thirty minutes.
"Sounds good."
The next area has a lot more to look at. There's a floating ring, two pairs of plinths (in each pair one has a receptacle and the other has a circle with wavy lines inside it), a floating ring, another hurricane shelter, and a tablet thing which looks like it might fit in those receptacles. It has the same symbol as one of the labels on the diagram they just passed.
If this is all just a very large puzzle- well. It could be the Nomai's idea of encryption, she supposes. They know very little about them.
Marin goes to see if she can lift the tablet- stone? Likely to be heavy. She still hasn't sensed a change in her spirit. That could mean- any number of things, most of them bad, but not worse then the fact that she couldn't construct a Bridge back.
The tablet is actually fairly light though it seems briefly sticky a bit like lifting a magnet if she's encountered those.
Which receptacle does she place it in?
If the two receptacles don't look dissimilar, she'd rather not waste time. She places it in the one next to the wall.
In the meantime Syl checks out the ring. "The ring here says it's been 10 and a half minutes since the orbital probe cannon fired."
The two plinths twist together forming one larger plinth and text appears.
"Oh more text." Syl hurries over and begins to read aloud.
"CASSAVA: I have bad news, Avens. Yarrow says there was a problem with the proposed power source, so the Orbital Probe Cannon won’t be asked to fire.
AVENS: I hope you’re pulling my locomotive limb here, Cassava.
CASSAVA: I wish I were, my friend, but no. They aren’t certain they can fix the problem, so the Orbital Probe Cannon is on indefinite hiatus.
CASSAVA: Tell Privet and Mallow they should return from the cannon. My spouse and I will remain at the Construction Yard, for now.
AVENS: An update: Mallow and I will join you and Daz. Privet left to visit her brother. She fears Idaea may feel responsible."
There are a lot of personal details here that she should be tracking. Marin tries to pick out the important threads there in the back of her mind.
"If this is the Construction Yard, we may be looking for what's left of these people."
And if that's the case- she doesn't have any special advantages for finding skeletons, but she does have one in gleaning knowledge from the dead. She looks around, trying to identify where someone might choose to hide. This floorplan is too open to be very secure, but perhaps...she'll need to look for that in a moment. Before she tries anything else, Marin removes the tablet and places it in the other receptacle, staff prepared in case this has any unexpected consequences.
"Given the storms on this planet I expect the skeletons are in the water now if they were ever here at all."
When she puts the tablet in the second receptacle the dust or maybe fluid at the bottom of the recessed area flows rapidly up over her body covering her and she appears to be elsewhere.
That's certainly something. Marin should not find this exciting, not with an immediate threat approaching. She's curious, though. She looks around for anything similar to that symbol she saw on the floor (and on the diagram).
Where she previously saw the wavy circle pattern in blue the symbol is now in blue while the tablet is now obscured. There's also another plinth pair next to a nearby wall with the symbol in blue. There's another two tablets on nearby benches one has the wavy circle symbol and the other has the two hexagon symbol from the diagram both are colored yellow.
Marin places the tablet with the two hexagons in the receptacle near the wall.
When she takes a step past the edge of the well whatever it was flows off of her and she is back where she was.
"Whoa, what happened there? I tried to talk to you but you couldn't hear me."
"It looked like I had gone somewhere else, where I saw a tablet with two hexagon symbols. Did you see anything here change? To me, it looked like this sand here blew all around me."
"Something flowed up and covered your body and suit. And as I said you couldn't hear me. I was going to try taking out the tablet if it went on much longer."
"It must have been the next section of this puzzle. Why don't you try using the tablet to experience it for yourself while I look for it?"
"Will do." Syl walks into the well and then when nothing happens takes the tablet out before putting it back in. When they do an odd brown film of something flows up and covers their body.
They're at the end of the platform on this side. The obvious place to go is to take the grav-plate ring over to the other side. She can either go via the top of the ring hanging upside down in the air or via underwater.
...underwater. So far, Marin has triggered more things by going lower- that rule might only hold if it indicates something about Nomai architecture, which is a spurious connection, but it's what she thinks of in the two seconds it takes to decide.
Things look a bit distorted from underwater but nothing particularly new reveals itself
Sylvite finishes her look around and starts to follow.
The other side is pretty bare but there is a bench with another tablet this one has an icon she hasn't seen before.
Huh. No corresponding plinths? Marin picks up the tablet and walks further, looking for any receptacles.
There are no plinths or anything else of note on this deck. "Did you find anything?"
"It was awesome, it was almost like I was there. I'm pretty sure wherever it was was inside the station like the diagram suggested. After we check out this tablet maybe we can go there next."
