:That's fascinating!: He's going to have to tell Yfandes all about it later. :And what's the way to work around it?:

:Not moving through normal space at all. There's a lot of complicated math involved and I only know some of it, but there's a sort of more-complicated parallel universe that it's possible to get to with the right kind of technology, where the limitations are different.:

:Oh! That's sort of how Gates are? Except without math. At least, you don't have to know any to cast the spell, maybe the person who invented it did. But they go through the Void, which is another plane where distance behaves differently:

:Sounds similar, yeah. You can't be in hyperspace this close to a planet, though, because of how gravity works there. If you go far enough away from any planets or suns there's no gravity to speak of and then it's safe.:

:Oh, huh: Vanyel has even more questions, now, but he's also catching himself yawning.

:Probably a good time to call it a night: Savil suggests. :Thank you for coming over, both of you:

:It's been fun.:

    "Yes, thank you, ma'am."

Savil escorts them to the door, smiling warmly. :I hope you’ll come by again:

Vanyel waves to both of them; he’s sort of tempted to hug them both, which is odd because the only people he really hugs outside of k’Treva Vale are Savil and occasionally Shavri (Yfandes doesn’t count.) He’s too embarrassed to actually initiate it, though.

:I think we will.: She gives Van a companionable hug around the shoulders and they go.

Savil talks with Vanyel for a bit, then shoos him off to bed. When Sandra gets home, very late, she prods her student about the list she's supposed to be writing out. Sandra confesses to having started it and gotten distracted but promises she'll go back.

Deskyl still isn't leaving the room much - she's sleeping less, but not recovered to the point where she's ready to pick up shielding yet - but DZ comes out after lunch to check out the library again.

There's a Herald sitting at a table, reading. "Oh! You're Van's friend, right? From another world? I'm sorry, I forgot your name. I'm Herald Tantras but everyone calls me Tran."

She stops moving when he speaks, and turns to face him.

"I'm DZ-twelve-Q, sir."

He repeats it slowly and carefully. "Well, it's nice to meet you! Did you come here to read? I'm impressed you can read Valdemaran already."

"Yes sir. My line is designed to learn languages very quickly."

"Huh, neat. Any topic in particular you're looking to read about? I could show you around a bit."

"I don't know what kinds of things you have, sir."

"Oh, right." Tran gets up. "Well, there's the history section over there, law and ethics here, studies on magic and the various Gifts here, poetry and ballads are here..."

She follows him politely, taking a few books from various sections as they go - it seems to be more intentional than random, she's not just grabbing whatever happens to be in her apparent line of sight, but she's not taking the time to examine the shelves, either.

Tran looks a bit incredulously at her when she's done. "You're going to read all of those?"

"Yes sir. Thank you for your help."

"You're very welcome. Er, want to take the other desk and read in here? You're welcome to."

"Yes sir, thank you."

She's even faster reading when she already knows the language; she's turning the pages slowly enough to not risk damaging them, but not much more slowly than that.

Tran watches for a while in awed silence before he says anything. "...Can all droids read that fast?"
