"Lotsa physical activity, not just magical activity."

"Yup, running around and carrying gear and hauling people."

"Guns 'n ammo since I don't have a direct combat power. And first aid and comms and lights and so forth depending on the situation."

"Oh, huh, that makes sense. Magical girls of the hunt and/or turn into witches variety get a personal magic weapon that they can make for really cheap. They aren't all actually maximally weapony but most of them are."

"You don't still have that, right?"

"Anyway, I'll come escort you to TGH."

"Thanks!"

Are they going to have to do paperwork at the hospital, that's pretty reasonable but also Lucy is bouncing up onto the balls of her feet occasionally with impatience.

May produces her esper ID and says Lucy's with her, then meets up with the messageboard poster and they are shown to the awakening teenager's room.

He's in restraints, and he's got a mouth guard, which somewhat muffles the screaming.

Oh no the poor kid--

--it isn't hard. He has GUNK on him and the gunk is to be PURIFIED; this is in fact one of the foundational aspects of her power, alongside healing.

There's a lot of gunk, so it takes more mana than she had guessed it would.

But not more than she has.

Poof.

The kid - well, he's actually more like nineteen - goes limp with the sudden relief. His aunt starts crying and goes to take the mouth guard out so he can talk.

"What was his backlash?" Lucy murmurs to May.

"Don't actually know, a lot of people like to keep it secret." She goes and offers the guy a hand, and he extends his fingers to brush her hand, and then they both flinch back a little and May steps away.

"Fair enough. Not compatible?"

"Not a bit."

"So we can narrow his secret backlash down as far as 'almost certainly not psychologically harrowing introversion,' and then not any farther on account of not being jerks."

"That's about the size of it." The aunt is pretty distracted catching up with her nephew and trying to flag down a nurse to let him out of the restraints. "Can you be confident that he's not going to - relapse -"

"I...would be surprised if that happened, but don't know enough about espers to say absolutely that it won't? But the backlash is gone, not, like, still there but suppressed."

"I wonder if he... has his powers now, early, or not..."

"I'm not going to check!" snarls the guy in the hospital bed.

"No, no, totally valid, that looked nasty, but I could like, whisper from over here and we can see if you can hear me, that's free."

"...fine."

May whispers, "Pineapple smoothie."

"Pineapple smoothie?" reports the guy incredulously.

"Congrats, looks like esper hearing."

Why is the guy incredulous, is he weirded out that it would be just pineapple and not coconut--no probably he's surprised by the esper senses.

The guy is checked over and discharged from the hospital and leaves with his aunt.

"Congrats," May tells Lucy. "How expensive is it?"

"Kiiind of expensive, but like, not that expensive per unit backlash, it was just a lot of backlash."

"Inconveniently that's going to be... the amount, for awakening espers, and that's going to be one of the higher-value options."

"Yeah. On the other hand I have only been accumulating mana for a couple hours total, and it didn't completely wipe me out, so..."
