Indeed. If he'd like to find out where they practice, he might want to ask before it starts.

… He got some people's numbers the day before; he'll just ask them to get him Scott's number and where the cross country's going on.

Lydia strongly suspects the attractive young men will be running along the trail; running around a field isn't really good practice for long-distance running. 

She texts him as much.

He thanks her and gets changed then goes to the indicated location!

They've already started without him, so he'll have to run quickly to catch up.

Luckily, he's faster than most people.

He does indeed catch up reasonably quickly!

Would he like to hang out in the back of the pack, or try to make a good showing?

In which case, he catches up to the leaders of the pack. 

The energy up here is more competitive. 

Even the freshmen seem to be getting into the spirit of things.

He's pretty good at this, though maybe not as good as some of the other leaders of the pack.

They seem unnaturally fast, actually. 

Some observers might suspect steroids.

Their coach seems quite pleased, and not suspicious at all.

"Great going, new kid!"

Tyler is not going to comment on the steroid usage. He may, however, check them out to make sure it's actually steroids and not something more bizarre of some kind.

He smiles (ish) at the coach in response.

And eventually, they come to a stop. 

Some of them gather with their friends. 

Scott waves at Tyler.

But it looks like the coach wants to talk to him first.

"Impressive work out there, Ayers. You thinking about joining?"

"Yeah!" he responds. "I asked around if there was a track club and people suggested cross country."

"Who needs track? If you can't run longer than that, you shouldn't be on the field."

He shrugs. "I didn't realize there was a cross-country club."
