"Okay."

"Let's run you by Bar, see what she can tell us... I'll tell Maitimo to shoo." Hey you, he writes, go upstairs, he needs to talk to Bar. Also I realize this is not necessarily a fair question to ask you but why are your alts all so screwed up.

Going upstairs, and sorry, what?

"He's going upstairs," says Cam, motioning to Findekáno. Tell you when I've got him situated-for-now.

"Is he going to be upset with you -"

"Doubt it very much. Yo Bar. Can you tell if Findekáno can take a chiplocker install okay?"

There is no reason I am aware of to suspect that he will tolerate it differently from the other Elves.

"Okay, cool. Also, can you get him a room without enabling even demons to figure out what the room number is."

Yes. Turn around, please.

Cam turns.

And a square of salt appears on the surface of the bar beside the napkins, and bits of it subtract and reappear, spelling out a room number, and then the salt vanishes.

"Thank you," he murmurs, and says to Cam, "I think you can turn back around now, she sent a number - I appreciate the thought but I will tell you if you want -"

"I have absolutely no legitimate reason to want your room number! You're generically telepathic! If I require your involvement in something I will ask!" Cam says, turning around. "Me and Edie will still be able to make you room keys, but it's a maze up there and we will not be able to find you as long as you don't tell anybody where you are and that means we will not casually drop the information if Maitimo or somebody connected thereto wants it. You'd probably find it prettier outside but Maitimo's been living in the woods, and anyway it'll be a nice big room you can decorate however you want - you will however have to carry things upstairs yourself to avoid showing us the place."

"...okay. Thank you."

"You're welcome. Let's go do your chip install in the security office and introduce you as long as we're there. Thank you Bar." And around the corner Cam leads him.

And he follows. And here is the Security office.

"Hi Nechar, this is Findekáno. I'm gonna install a chip in his head, it should be fine but can you spot me?"

"Sure," says the security guy.

"There," Cam says presently. "You come out and loom when people tell Bar they'd like Security presence, right, not just if someone's actually mid-rulebreaking?"

"Yeah, sure," Nechar says. "Why?"

"Complicated reasons Findekáno should not be around Maitimo."

"No outside business conflict is a rule."

"It's more complicated than that. Anyway, if Findekáno calls you - he's telepathic, do not be alarmed if he doesn't do that through Bar - can you make sure that Maitimo doesn't, like, leave the main bar area and therefore your watchful eye with him?"

"Sure dude," says Nechar.

"...thank you," he says.

"No problem," says Nechar.

"And can you let me and Findekáno know if you're about to shift change?" Cam asks.

"I guess. Might forget."

"Okay - Bar, can you let us know?"

When I see you, napkins the Bar extension in the back of the office.

"Okay, thanks."

Certainly.

If Maitimo offers to trade some kinder multiverse policy for the room number he is not going to call Security. But he smiles appreciatively at Cam anyway, it's a very practical approach to the problem.

And Cam leads him out of the security office - "That's the infirmary in there, the lady in it is very sweet but she's got some kind of magical mental impairment and can't hold a normal conversation -" - and here is the main bar again. Cam hands him a computer. "And now you can teach it to be controlled by your will, takes a few minutes."

He starts doing that.

And then Cam can send him empire-ing notes.

Which he'll read, quietly, relaxing as he does. He was right to think Cam was good, Cam is good. This'll be okay, at least insofar as Maitimo has to stick to his stated objectives.

"...so yeah," says Cam, when he's had a chance to skim the whole thing. "I think this one is not like your one but for that reason he's not going to kick up a fuss about being avoided."
