Somewhere that isn't on Golarion, a lot of people are having a heated discussion near a field of sunflowers.
"I take it you'd describe the - expressed preferences - of the gods here in some other way."
"Golarion gods have those, but they're - narrower - I do what Iomedae commands of her followers because I'm Hers but there is plenty that could be adopted piecemeal as advice, on top of or instead of those, and I think that's a normal layperson approach."
"Well. There might be something. I'm not the most charitable toward gods. But I haven't heard of anything like that."
"Like, I'm not allowed to lie - unless the rules are different for paladins and clerics, but I'm presuming they're the same to be safe until I get a chance to ask, which I suppose now might be never - and someone who wasn't representing themselves as an empowered Iomedaean could still gather that She recommends honesty, but they're not - in Her chain of command, is I guess the analogy in our case, other churches would probably put it differently - like I'd imagine an Abadaran would say that you can take Abadar's advice but if you aren't in His employ it's not binding on you."
"Yes, what you have sounds terrible. Golarion is only terrible in some places."
"Do the gods here ever have clerics who work like me, or do they do some other kind of claim-staking on their people?"
"They do magic favors for their favorites but not exactly the same set as Iomedae does for you."
"On Golarion clerics do a lot of healing but - the Good gods' people are much better at it than the Evil ones."
"Two ways. I can heal everyone around me in a thirty foot radius. An Evil cleric or one of an Evil god can't do that; they do the opposite, killing in the same area. - there are Neutral gods, which is why that's an 'or', technically a Neutral cleric of a Neutral god can decide which they want for themselves but it's almost always acknowledged that you want to channel the positive, healing energy if you can. And I can prepare spells every morning, and I don't have to prepare any healing spells - single target infusions of positive energy - because I can decide in the moment if I want to convert a different spell for something else like summoning an extraplanar creature or halting an enemy in their tracks or compelling the truth in a chosen area, into healing instead. Anyone who channels negative energy can do the same thing with their spells but with negative energy. If they want to heal their allies or themselves they have to plan for that in advance."
"I wouldn't know for sure if it worked that way here but they never do that first thing. That I know of, anyway."
"I suppose that's true. Is there... anywhere at all, that doesn't have a god right now but isn't implacably hostile to the concept in principle."
"...The middle of the ocean? I still think there's a chance Acarthen will be fine. I don't actually know of anything awful their goddess has done."
