Well, not every mutation is an unambiguous advantage. See also incontinent eye lasers. Not everyone would have had the resources to make him goggles that would make him safe to be around.

but maybe if there were more of us...
Maybe it wouldn't have taken so many resources. Maybe there would be accommodations. Maybe the world would break and heal to fit them rather than the other way around.
