His current emotional state is not a complete mystery up until he sees fit to drop in on me and I have some chance to nip things in the bud if it's a counterproductive one and he feels rewarded for doing the right thing.

He joins him. "What do you want?"

"Uh, something sufficiently within-normal-parameters that I stop feeling terrified, which that question is not."

His boyfriend snuggles him. "Are you going to let us go?"

"You're already gone."
