"The spell itself. It's... as far as I understand what you mean by 'soul', which isn't very far, you might say that my world doesn't appear to have souls as a thing by default but I built myself one."

"Just--the whole premise! That somehow there's a plane of soulless humans and my boyfriend has built himself a prosthetic self-resurrecting soul..."

He giggles.

"...Not sure I'm a hundred percent convinced you don't have a normal soul, though. I mean, how would you know?"

"I don't know, how would I?"

"It mostly doesn't come up until you die!"

"I'd expect to have noticed souls existing if they did. Especially with all the work I've done on immortality. I wouldn't have had to build myself a soul if there'd been one there already."

"You haven't noticed mine, yet, but I've been here a bit less than a month..."

"I also haven't tried to make you immortal!"

"It would be a bit redundant," she agrees.

"Just a little, yes."

"Well, we'll see what happens when you try to make my daughter immortal."

"Yeah."

Snuggle. "If I were a cleric I could try resurrecting someone..."

"I have only the vaguest notion of what a cleric is but I got the impression they needed gods for things?"

"Yeah?"

"So wouldn't you need a god too, or...?"

"...Yes? Clerics don't lose their powers on other planes, the god wouldn't need to be here."

"...but is that because once you have the powers you just have them and the god doesn't enter into it anymore, or is it because the other planes are still in range - like, if you expect clerical powers to work here, is that because clerical powers are that portable, or because the attention of gods is, because if it's the second thing I am concerned."
