The Valar announce that they've done as much as they can in Singularity (they can't bring back peoples' babies in that critical period either, but they can get them earlier versions) and are setting up portals between there and Sanity as soon as they are confident they've cleaned up the plague. A bunch of Elf architects have this wild idea for a fivedimensional city where alternating intersections are interdimensional portals between various Valinors and they get eagerly to setting it up.
"The people who work here are a little worried that your cousin is distracted and not remembering to make sure you're getting enough food and sleep. You've been here for a long time and it's not really a great place for kids. Can you tell me where your parents work?"
Shrug. "I want be here - to be here? I want to be here. I'm helping. I'm getting enough food or sleep."
"...Do you not speak English as your first language? What do you speak?"
"Would you rather talk to someone who speaks Greek?" the lady asks Mingling.
"It would take a few hours for me to go get someone who speaks Greek but I can if you want me to, all right? When was the last time you had a whole meal all at once, not just snacks?"
I don't know the words for breakfast or morning. "Not long. Meal soon. Want eat - want to eat - with us?"
"I wouldn't want to take your food from you. The people who work here have been keeping an eye on you and they haven't seen you eat much."
"He means you can't take his food because it's not like we're short of it," he says. "We eat together, he's just one of those kids who eats like a bird."
"You're right, I'm terribly sorry. What would be a better animal?"
"Me neither! But it's still really important for your health that you sleep, every day. Most kids your age need naps, too."
