When Hyacinth comes home to her new apartment for the first time after a long day at university, it's to the sight of moving bots just finishing dropping off the last of her stuff and moving furniture into place. The full-immersion VR pod her parents gave her is safely hooked up in the pod room, her bed is in her bedroom, she has chairs and a desk and some bookshelves. Clothes are mostly still in boxes, waiting to be hung up in the closet. Holovid and a cozy chair occupy the living room. She doesn't have any food in the small kitchen yet.
"Interesting. We might be ready for that as soon as we've finished the goats, assuming we pause to spend our points after."
"Reasonable enough. We'll check if the bounty's still here after we finish the goats. You ready to head out?"
She double checks that all her new abilities are firmly in their places, then nods. "Ready."
Sable nods and leads the way out of town, opposite side from where they came in. On the way out, she takes a moment to explain, "So two useful things you should try out. One, we have a 'party sense'. If you think about where I am, you should get an instinctual sense of which direction and how far away. Give it a try?"
"Great. Two, there's a similar sense for quest objectives. If the objective is an explicit target and the search and investigation isn't an important part of the quest, you'll get a sense for where the target is."
"Seems like it'll be a bit of a hike to the evil goats. They're like three miles away."
She nods. "A good hour's hike, a little bit more maybe. Probably we stop half an hour outside of town for initial target practice, hit some rocks or trees or something."
"Makes sense. I'd rather not test the fire on something inherently flammable and close to a village if I can help it."
She giggles and nods. "Reasonable. I figure we'll keep an eye out for a rocky area. That should get more frequent as we turn northeast."
"Smart plan!"
She smiles and steps forward, using her staff as a walking-stick. "Let's go then!"
And they keep walking out of town. The terrain is hillier on the east side of town, but still quite wooded. Birds chirp as they walk, and the air is crisp and clear.
She's always loved a good hike. In real life she's hiked the Rockies, and in Realms of Dragons she's hiked the Needles. It's a familiar rhythm of one foot ahead of the next. Fortunately her starter gear comes with some decent boots.
So does Sable. Honestly, all five Pirates love a good hike, to varying degrees. Speaking of which...
"So, apropos of nothing, have you ever heard of plurality?"
"Now that's a topic I wasn't expecting. Yeah, I've heard of it, there was a site I saw when I was in high school called... what was it... 'Crow's House' or something. By someone who was multiple. They had written up a contract to be signed by all their selves to take care of their shared body and had a bunch of other notes on it... I don't remember a lot more about it except that I thought it was kind of cool."
"Well that's convenient. Chalk another point up to meddling, perhaps. As you may now have guessed, the pretty girl who fucked you last night is secretly five girls in a trenchcoat, and we think that's why randomization offered us the option of an Infiltrator variant of Darkling."
She blinks. "Sorry, run that by me again? Did I... manage to fuck five people by accident?"
She giggles. "Sorry. We get a bit co-conscious during daily life, but we're solo during sex. The others have lurked a bit today and yesterday, but it was primarily me, Sable, all day, and exclusively from when we went up to bed. So no, you were only fucking one girl last night, though yes, there are five in total now who want to get to know you. And the reason we got this particular randomizer-only race, we think, is because we strongly prefer to have different appearances. This look is always me. Everyone else looks distinctively different, and we finally got enough ability points last night to build everyone's separate forms."
