When Hyacinth comes home to her new apartment for the first time after a long day at university, it's to the sight of moving bots just finishing dropping off the last of her stuff and moving furniture into place. The full-immersion VR pod her parents gave her is safely hooked up in the pod room, her bed is in her bedroom, she has chairs and a desk and some bookshelves. Clothes are mostly still in boxes, waiting to be hung up in the closet. Holovid and a cozy chair occupy the living room. She doesn't have any food in the small kitchen yet.
She lifts Sable's hand to her lips and kisses it lightly, then continues on her way downstairs.
But she recovers and they make it downstairs.
"Good morning, Jorem! We'd both love breakfast, if you don't mind. Although... do you know anywhere in town that we could get pancakes?"
"Nay, lass. Nowhere in town. Your best bet would be a bigger city. Can ye console yourself with fresh bread and jam, for today?"
Nnnnnnnot the best breakfast she's ever had but she'll take it.
"Thank you," she says softly, but she looks over at Sable when she says it.
She thanks Jorem as well, but then she's turning to Hyacinth with an utterly sappy smile on her face. "Gladly," she murmurs.
After a long moment she remembers she's supposed to find them a table, and does so.
She takes a seat and eats her jammy bread. It's not even toast. She supposes they don't have toasters.
"I..."
How to put this. How to even open the conversation.
"... need to get my abilities generated this morning and figure out how they work. Some target practice would probably be a good idea. And I have to allocate my stat points and node points and everything..."
She takes another bite of her bread.
She nods. "We can definitely manage that. I think we should lock the build in over breakfast and on our way out of town, and then stop somewhere convenient for target practice before we reach the herd of corrupted goats."
She brings up her interface again. "So I was going to take Splash Spell, Held Spell, Extinguish, and... a mana efficiency node? I'm not certain about the mana efficiency node."
"I'm thinking seriously about bouncing or turning shots..."
She frowns.
"No, I think that's style over substance at this point. I need basic reliability before I start going for fancy tricks."
"Okay."
She squeezes back, then locks in Extinguish, Held Spell, Splash Spell, and a Mana Efficiency node from Persist.
Annnnnd locked.
Any new ability slots for her, or is she still stuck with her starting four?
Since she's still comparatively low Anamnesis, she can have a new slot. As a treat.
(Actually the acquisition rate is just curved, but eh.)
Just what she's always wanted!
"New slot," she reports to Sable. "I'm up to five now."
She flicks through her list of abilities.
Five slots. One should be her enhanced fire resistance.
She arranges [Splash Spell + Held Spell + Bolt + Fire + Mana Efficiency] into one monstrous ability.
C'mon, Intricacy, you can do this...
It takes a bit of tweaking, but with her high-for-her-level Intricacy giving her access to a better node graph in the ability builder she can manage it. The ability gets marked as valid. Would she like to lock it and name it?
She would love to lock and name it.
Hmmm, what name to choose...
It can be Flare. That seems to cover all its uses. And it'll replace her standard firebolt.
