All right! They will start doing chemistry with seaweed, then.

Tanidio stirs one container with his Unseen Servant, while stirring another container with his hands, and heating two different things with Prestidigitation.

This is at least complicated enough that he couldn't be straightforwardly replaced with a recent Academy graduate on their first Worldwound tour.

It is actually kind of impressive, and he doesn't even have the full context for how hard it is to do.

Making agar with alchemical equipment for science, instead of culinary purposes, feels a bit strange.

It's very impressive. You'd need two entire Academy graduates to replace him.

Levrolurment carries on chattering about alchemical treatments that exist.

He knows how to make bloodblock (which makes blood clot faster), smelling salts, and soothe syrup (prevents nausea, causes euphoria). He knows about a handful of general tonics, stillgut (a nausea preventer that doesn't cause euphoria), soul stimulant (helps if an undead has fucked you up), unguent of revivification (preserves dead flesh), and woundweal (prevents recovery from injuries). None of these have ingredients Bun recognizes.

Levrolurment also knows about or has heard of various things that Bun does recognize: willow bark and poppies for pain, ginger and mint for nausea, licorice for coughs, cinchona bark for malaria, a variety of poisons to bring on a menstrual period that are clearly abortifacents.

...his time would probably be best spent on making medicines from Earth here, but experimenting with bloodblock and stillgut and soul stimulant (what does it even mean to be messed up by the undead???) is so, so tempting.

"Don't think of it as 'I can't experiment with stillgut,' think of it as 'I'm going to have to experiment with stillgut later.' --Although it won't be that valuable, alchemists make you agree not to tell anyone how to make the things they know how to make before they'll train you."

"Why would that make experimentation less valuable?"

"Well, I wouldn't be able to tell people what I found out."

Watching Bun be excited about alchemical remedies makes the warm thing flare in his heart again and he doesn't understand why or what it is. It is like he is walking around with a Charm Person cast on him, except that Bun can't even cast spells.

He wants to teach people medicine, so more people can help other people! He is very enthusiastic about it.

What is happening to him.

"That seems kind of rude. You're spoiling them on medicine so they don't get a chance to figure it out for themselves."

"But then they can use what they already know to make something new and better, and then their students can do it again--"

"You have plenty of time to invent all of medicine individually in Hell."

"I don't imagine there are many people to treat in Hell."

"Good point. You know, sensible species are immortal."

"I don't see why we decided to do this 'mortality' thing. It's very inconvenient."

"We clearly established that it was so you could do medicine!"

"Can't I want the best of both worlds?"

"Only the best for you."

Okay, that's fair.

"Is there anything you've noticed it would be medically useful to have?"

Levrolurment can answer this question in great detail.
