And - as the darkness wears on their minds, long after Inej has started seriously questioning herself - before any of them break (she'll never break) -

The darkness parts, wisps of smoke in the blinding light, wind catching their hair and rustling tall grasses.

Oh thank fuck.

"Inej," Kaz says. Her voice comes out croaky. "Tell the horse to stop."

She - tries.

It's probably not even her efforts that get the horse to stop. He seems more curious about the grass than anything.

Good enough. Kaz is getting off the horse now.

A move possibly a little complicated by how Jesper starts sliding, boneless, once she's no longer supporting his weight even in part. (Once the terror has lifted.)

Ah shit. She tries to catch him as best she can, hissing when the weight hits her bad knee.

Inej twists, helps catch him - taps the horse, which kneels grumpily.

They can get everyone off without too many more injuries, at least.

There's that.

Kaz gets the water out of the bag and takes a drink.

She settles Jesper to the ground, snaps her fingers in front of his face. "Hey, we're out," she says. "We're safe."

He starts shaking more.

"Inej. He needs grounding. Touch."

"Yes boss," she says, quietly, and wraps her arms around him tightly.

That gets him to move a little - he uncurls, clings to Inej.

She shifts them, moves into his lap so she's touching more of him.

(She's shaking, too.)

(Kaz doing more here would hurt more than help.)

He calms down eventually - starts making little noises first. Then -

"...Sorry, boss."

"You survived, so I'll forgive you."

Pained chuckle.

"We're only halfway done, Jes. No time to die yet."

"No mourners."

Squeeze. "No funerals."

And stand?

He's still a bit shaky, but - yeah, stand.

"Let's get away from here."

"Good plan."

Did they go in a straight enough line that they can identify some landmarks?

There's not a lot of landmarks out here, unfortunately - there's a smudge of mountains to the south, close enough they're probably in the southern half Ravka, though.

Great.

"North. Hopefully we'll hit Kribirsk before too long."
