"We may have different standards there. Or I may be misjudging."

"I don't think you particularly enjoyed hurting me. I think you did it when you had reasons.

I loved - love you. I obey you out of my love for you. - it is possible to hurt a child enough they don't love their mother, though it's very difficult."

"I would have liked to imagine that I'd be the kind of mother who would avoid having reasons to torture her children, who would not need sorcery to make her children love her, who -

- well, about whom we would not be having this sort of discussion."

"I don't think you needed sorcery, to make me love you. It's just - sensible to have redundancies, right? If something is really important, then you want the person who is doing it to be loyal to you, and to be magically assured loyal to you, and to love you, and you want to own their soul -

…I respect competence. I don’t wish my mother had pursued her goals less competently just because it might’ve worked out fine. If she’d done that with respect to me that might’ve been nice for me but if she’d done that with respect to anything else I’d have been in vastly more danger. And - I don’t think there was a way around selling my soul, and that’s the only cost I wouldn’t have paid for any reason other than obedience.”

"That seems like a thing which is particularly bad to compel you to do, to whatever extent you were compelled."

Slight flash of contempt. “Of course sending people to Hell is never in their interests, and it is obviously frequently done with deliberate intent by everyone trying to do anything interesting in the world, paladins included.”

"I think there are distinctions that can be drawn between different kinds of sending people to Hell and compelling a person to sell their soul is one of the worse kinds… but maybe that seems to you like naïveté."

"Maledicting and executing someone plainly seems worse for them than obliging them to sell their soul, as if they’ve sold their soul they get to live their life first. And they could get their soul trapped, if they really wanted. I’m sure you’d have agreed to do that for me when the work was done, if I’d asked. You’d plausibly have ordered it to protect your secrets, if it didn’t look likely I’d stay alive.”

"I…am glad you got out of it."

That really seems to be all there is to say on the subject.
