I don't mind if you want to confide in me, much as you seem to, but it oughtn't be just me and Marit. If you don't want to bare your soul to a bunch of Taldans or paladins, I can't really blame you, but you've got other options."

"Even assuming I wanted to I doubt They'd grant a personal audience."

"Iomedae said you didn't like the gods which - sounded kind of mad to me. But maybe things like this don't happen to people who aren't at least a bit mad.

...Anyways, you can definitely get an audience with a god, you just - like this -" he clasps his hands together and closes his eyes - "Oh, Shelyn, Hopeful One, grant me your wisdom. Someone I love has been twisted into evil and I do not know what to do - and so on."

"I would not expect an answer."

"If you want wise words around here you're stuck with Taldans or Arazni."

"Or you could teleport around the world and find a talking mushroom! Nobody could stop you and every talking mushroom I've met was very wise."

The most efficient route to Lawful Neutral is probably preventing famines. Famines are usually caused by weather, so nearby areas are also affected unlike by monsters; famines are usually temporary so if you address them the people affected have good odds of living on to die of something nobler like childbirth or fighting monsters. Or, hey, the Shining Crusade. 

She shows up to starving villages, dumps sacks of grain on them, and tells them to serve the Good gods. It's not even that expensive. But after five weeks of it she still hasn't hit Neutral and she finds herself wishing that her mother - who clearly cares a great deal whether Lilia goes to Hell or not - would call her in and demand that she account for how she's been saving lives for five whole weeks and hasn't made Lawful Neutral yet.

She knows that her mother won't do this, but she goes to visit her anyway. "They're selling the improved Rope Trick in Sothis." 

"Thank you. What were you doing in Sothis?"

"Buying Osirians." This is not true. She was not reliably able to lie to her mother, back before.

This Alfirin has not known Lilia since she was a baby. To the extent that the statement rings false it's because it doesn't fit with their last conversation, not because of any detectable mannerism of Lilia's.

"If you're still trying to not be evil it may help to free them."

Which is what, with this version of her mother, passes for a reprimand, right. Lilia doesn't even mind the style, she just wishes her mother's standards were higher. "It seems like an expensive way to do Good. I suppose if you just let them buy their own freedom it's less expensive but probably correspondingly less Good. I do try to be mindful in all I do that you are more or less a paladin and will be grieved by all the things that grieve paladins."

"What I meant is that keeping slaves often seems to turn people evil and might be an impediment to the opposite change... Do I really resemble a paladin that much? It must be a matter of perspective, I suppose."

"In every respect. ...I suppose there are some I haven't checked. Suppose I determined the best way to power in Oppara was to seduce some very important minister, would that bother you?"

"Not if it doesn't bother you." She'd be very concerned if Lilia wound up with child but there's little danger of that.

"Say I encountered a marvelous way to make a lot of money by editing a bunch of peoples' memories of a contract, would that one bother you?"

"I expect you'd lose Law but there are worse fates."

"Oh, I think I could do it without losing Law. Geryon's Lawful. You can't break contracts, that's not to say you can't give everyone else an entirely mistaken recollection of them."

"Oh, is he really? That always seemed to me like the sort of thing he'd try to have known even - especially - if it was false."

"He empowers Lawful Neutral priests, sometimes, who pass as Abadarans. Think they're Abadarans, sometimes. They are almost all damned in the end but I know for a fact they aren't all damned starting out."
