"Yes, she sounds it. Most people just - haven't thought about whether someone they admire and respect and trust could really be importantly wrong, or have imagined they agree with them on everything, rather than - philosophically committing themselves to it. I do not know that my ordinary strategy would work, for Lilia. But - I think I'd let her be, if - and only if - she had a plan to - grow. To be stronger and better, eventually, to be able to surpass you if she did ultimately find you wanting..."

It occurs to her as she says this that she probably wouldn't actually like the outcome of one of her best wizards's evil daughter deciding to grow in strength and pursue her own aims. But this has surely occurred to Alfirin too and isn't what she asked for advice on.

"I think she doesn't have such a plan. And even if she did I'm not sure how to let her be, I think - part of where I'm struggling here is that I cannot see anything that seems like a neutral course of action."

“Treat her like I treat other people who are committed to obeying my orders? Which certainly introduces a lot of special duties, including teaching them which ones they ought to disobey, but which doesn’t generally come with a lot of interrogation of whether their reasons for enlisting were stupid - half the men enlisted for stupid reasons -”

"Stupid reasons are not exactly the ones I'm worried about - I don't know how to get her unstuck enough to think of a plan to - surpass me - but I guess that's more of an idea of what to do than I had before. Thank you. This has been helpful."

Iomedae smiles weakly at her. “Any reasonable time. I - hope you find a way to unstick her.”

Iomedae alerts Marit to the situation. He is pleasantly surprised that Alfirin seems upset to have mind controlled child slaves. Unless she’s pretending to feel that way.

“She cares a lot about people being - not subjects even of those who’ll steer them wisely. It’s much of her dislike of the gods.”

“She’s an enchantment specialist, Knight-Commander.”

“You’re pretty good at Dominate Person yourself.”

“And I think it is a reasonable inference that I don’t care a particularly notable amount about people not being subjects! I like Alfirin. I trust her, in some capacities. But I wouldn’t have strongly expected her to be distressed about this.”

“Would you be distressed about it, if you learned you’d done it in the future?”

" - well, it seems to foreclose having most Good allies, or create a lot of discoverable vulnerabilities for said Good allies. I’d want to be sure there was a plan for her to recover eventually if things went well. But - if you’re telling me Aroden’s dead, Arazni’s an Evil lich, the Empire is ruled by Hell - and this is the best way to infiltrate their spy apparatus -

- Heaven can repay her.”

“I’m not sure that’s true. That Heaven can repay her, I mean. I worry there are things you can do to a person which specifically impede their ability to identify and arrange for fair payment for it, and this really seems like one of them. Heaven can shower rewards on her, which is not the same thing.”

“Maybe I’ll agree if I talk to her. I don’t plan to, though.” Then she’d know he is among the people who knows about her.

“I think you should mostly talk to Alfirin. She could use some people who know what’s going on.”

Then she’ll know he’s among the people who know -

Iomedae laughs at him. “She knows I intended to tell you. You and Casata. If I have told anyone else on the staff I did not mention that.”
