"I was right, though."

(Idarai smothers a laugh.)

"Presumably a different berry would at least taste different, so you wouldn't have too many, but that does sound dicey."

"I was really hungry, and I knew wild blueberry grew in the area!"

"And it was at the point at which Edie got hungry enough to try suspicious berries I got over my remaining squeamishness about killing helpless cute animals real fast."

"Everything I hear about someone's backstory is either bizarre or tragic."

"Yeah, well, who comes to MCU without a backstory like that." She stabs something on her plate viciously with a fork, her fingers tightly laced. "Without also being evil, I mean."

"Someone who got lied to about what it was like here?"

"Granted."

"I don't think most people would be impressed with the tragedy of my backstory. My mother is dead and my stepmother is a terrible person, but my father is a wealthy nobleman who hasn't tried to marry my sister off to someone old and odious."

"I think having a dead mother is bad enough! I'd brave worse risks than this place to bring my mother back, if I had to."

"My backstory isn't terribly tragic up until the recent alien invasion. I had a bad few weeks when I was eight, but apart from the specific and unusual way in which they were bad, I don't think they were exceptional."

"Your backstory so far falls entirely into the bizarre," he assures her. "Not as bizarre as Lucy's, but from my point of view, still bizarre."

"Even given the premise of 'interdimensional university dedicated to the exotic powers'?"

"That fact contextualizes the bizarreness; it does not eliminate it."

"You're going to think the future is batshit crazy when you learn more about it."

"In what way?"

"I should probably have a good answer to that question, since I directly prompted it, but I know less about 1187 than I probably would if we hadn't been on the lam since I was a little kid. But we had total freedom of religion in my country before the robots destroyed it!"

"That is surprising, but less so than any of the things Lucy has said."

She casts Erek a mild beseeching look.

"Literacy rates approach a hundred percent in adults. They've landed on the moon. Smallpox has been eradicated from the face of the globe."

"Smallpox has been eradicated?" he breathes, delighted. "That's amazing. --The other things are amazing too, but fuck smallpox."

"Fuck smallpox! Admittedly it's not as bad in the Neath, where even the darkest corners feel the touch of Mountain-light, but diseases in general can suck it."

"Fuck smallpox!" he agrees heartily.

"I don't think we have that one! I will have to make sure I'm not carrying anything home and neither are my townies."
