Giggle.

Well obviously she'd disguise herself... Just go as Bella's lovely arm candy. No Dark Lady in sight.

Unfortunately, dear Bella, she is unable to do that. Part of the price for claiming oneself is that one can be nobody else.

Fair. (Kiss.) Bella will go alone, then, and simply report back after.

Perhaps after the world has changed they can go together.

She'd love that.

Kiss!

Bellatrix heads to the Potter family's Yule celebration in good cheer, presents in her expandable bag, a nice mulled mead and a mulled cider tucked away for the Potters themselves. She's greeted warmly by the family and her young cousins - and even her sisters' wariness toward her is fading. Andy's in a tizzy about her NEWTs, mostly, and Bellatrix has been working on wiggling her towards recruitment a bit... Whereas Cissy is steadily plowing through every course Hogwarts offers.

She laughs with the family a good bit - gets to meet Sirius's friends the Marauders, since James insisted on inviting Remus and Peter, too (and apparently some girl he crushes on from Sirius's teasing, who didn't show). Hands out presents - including to Sirius's friends, though she's mostly operating on secondhand information for what they like. A book documenting cursed tombs to Sirius, a set of recordings of foreign Quidditch games for James, a stack of books (both on rare magic and on muggle science) for Remus, some Potions supplies for experimenting with to Peter... Books on extremely foreign magic for Cissy, a paid reservation for a date with Ted Tonks at a nice restaurant for Andy (which gets her shoulder punched) and a book on self Transfiguration as the 'apology' for that.

The party after's nice, especially with the boys showing off their Animagus forms. The wine flows freely among the adults, and Bella can tell the four Marauders are planning on stealing some for themselves. (Cissy seems to think the entire concept of alcohol is ridiculous.) The Potters have a nice bonfire as the sun sets, to burn through the night - an old tradition, that, and the kids are gathering around to tell stories and sing until they fall asleep under James' parents' gazes -

It's the perfect time for Bellatrix to slip away.

...And discover that the Invisibility Cloak is nowhere in James or Sirius' luggage, rooms, common hangout spaces. Nowhere she can reach while searching, even as a cat.

She goes out to watch the bonfire until dawn while everyone else goes to sleep, thinking, until the sun returns...

She accepts the offer to stay the day, of course, and does her best to slowly draw the Marauders into a discussion of their pranks, suggests she has for more, teachers whose weaknesses she knows... (She cheerfully suggests they prank Fay - "We dated for a bit," she says with a smirk, which gets an answering laugh from Sirius and a "Oh, she's going down.") She lets the Invisibility Cloak come up, expresses mild curiosity about it -

James starts pouting. Sirius snickers, and - "James's girlfriend" ("She's not my girlfriend!") "Anyways, this girl who James is totally head over heels for - though I agree she's got better taste than that, she's clearly been checking me out - she figured out we had the cloak near start of term. Asked to borrow it, like, end of November? A bit after my birthday, anyways. She hasn't returned it. No clue why, though also James was dumb and didn't set a return date."

Remus rolls his eyes. "She's flirting with James. Duh. He's actually talking to her now, not just pulling her pigtails." (James makes a wounded noise with a mutter that sounds a lot like 'Traitors.')

"James is very pretty when he's moping at you," Sirius agrees, despite James kicking him under the table - though James' follow up shove turns into a wrestling match.

Bellatrix nods, smiling. She probably even mostly looks sincere. "Who's the lucky girl?" she asks, voice teasing. (Peter's the only one who looks even vaguely unsure, but he's been quiet basically the entire time, and he doesn't eye her much.)

"No one!" James yelps.

And Sirius, who is apparently definitely getting marked on the future Marauder's role call as The Worst Traitor, chirps, "Lily Evans! She's in our year. Gryffindor. Too good for James."

There's a bit more shoving, then Bellatrix gets them to calm down a bit, laughing over James' misfortune (and teasing out more information about the Cloak's current holder, of course).

She returns to her Lady that afternoon, frowning.

"No Cloak?"

"Not there. Some friend of theirs borrowed it and didn't give it back yet - Lily Evans, a Gryffindor, I'm guessing in their year."

"Tsk. Boy should be more careful of his possessions."

"Seriously."

"Still, 'sneak in as a cat' is still an open option. I can pay her a visit after the school reopens."

"That would be best. I do not care for the idea of leaving it loose longer than necessary."

"I'll start scouting some, then... Plan my approach."

"Be cautious of Fay. She knows your Animagus form now."

"I'll avoid her, though I bet worst that happens if I get caught to me is I get tied up in her room for a while... Still, we don't want her knowing there's something in Hogwarts we're after."

"Try to sell her on Dumbledore, if that does happen."

"She hasn't been going after him much at all... It'd be nice to redirect some of her energy."

"She may be maneuvering in his little group where we cannot see, but yes."

"Perhaps provoking her would get some of that out in the light."

"Possibly. But do not be too reckless; breaking the Hogwarts wards simply to rescue you would be a little more escalation than I wish."

She giggles. "I'll try not to get caught, then. I can save the provocation for later."

"That would be appreciated."

Kiss.

Does her Lady want her to complete any other tasks, as long as she's infiltrating Hogwarts?

Not at the moment.

Okay.

Bella will be back before she knows it.
